The Shadowy Slicker - Noir Audio Drama

The Shadowy Slicker - Noir Audio Drama

Project Overview

The Shadowy Slicker is an upcoming noir audio drama that focuses on the life of Amory DeWolfe, an anti-hero and freelance criminal who is only out to make money. The audio drama is set in 1967 Cleveland, Ohio, where only the crooked survives. The tone is dark and grimy, so I need characters who embody loose morality in this post-Casablanca world. The world is unrelentless and cold, much like Ohioan winters.

In episode one, Amory DeWolfe extorts a large sum of cash from buttercream fortune-heiress Mona Carver. While the plot is simple enough, the dialogue and tone enriches the narrative, so I need people who will not just read their lines, but emotes charm into every sentence.

This is a love letter to film noir and it’s kin. Noir has always been one of my favorite genres in any media due to their loner heroes, dark and intriguing storylines, and suspense. The style of the Shadowy Slicker is full of Amory’s narration and unique descriptions.

For episode one, I need two males (one main, one supporting) and one main female voice actor. I’m letting you know now that if I don’t find a suitable voice for Amory, I will most likely play the role myself.

Please note that this is a hard-core noir story, so there will be cursing, drinking, and many adult themes. Do not audition if you are uncomfortable with it.

Writers: I am also looking for another writer who shares my love of noir. I would love to have anyone who is interested.

Requirements:

If you are decided for a character, please be committed. I will be scheduling an hour practice once a week during the summer on Skype. I expect that if you are casted, you will be punctual in getting your lines to me and making the practices. I can forgive anything and everything if you communicate with me what your problems are.

Microphone quality is essential. All audio must not have grading background noises, clipping issues, fans, etc. It must also be at least semi-professional (ie, no smartphones or gaming headset mics). Obviously, you must also have reliable recording software (Audacity, Garage Band, etc.)

This is NOT a paid position right now. You will be credited on the official website and at the end of the episode.

I want to reiterate that this project will take a very long time to finish. I may also ask for re-takes or new lines from time to time. Communication is very important to me because I want to make the best quality audio drama I possible can.

If you have a resume and/or a demo reel, please attach it as well.

The deadline for both writers and voice actors will be on May 27, 2017 at 9 p.m EST.

Amory DeWolfe is an anti-hero freelance criminal whose sole motivation is money and commanding respect. He lacks most heroic qualities, but his smooth talking and charismatic personality seeps through his trench coat and fedora. He is a hard hitter when it comes to drinking, but is more than willing to do any job that pays.

Although he is reduced to a lowlife, Amory is incredibly intelligent due to his incomplete college education. His voice is rough from years of drinking Scotches, but his tone and mannerisms are a lot more refined. Think Don Draper from Mad Men mixed with Humphrey Bogart.

  • "(Narration) Women. All they do is cause trouble. Now listen, I’m not one of those guys who reads those detective novels and has this asinine idea that every female on the planet is out to rob me of my rather feeble earnings. I’m saying they cause trouble in other areas. A good example would be your personal life. You know, tangling you up, wanting to keep you from dating other dames. They tie you down and throw away the key. Sometimes even literally. And who needs that aggravation?"

  • "Feminism is this year's nylons. It'll be out of style before too long.

  • "Well, I don't exactly look like a free-loading hippie, do I?

She is smooth talking and a no-nonsense type of dame. She is the heiress of a large company who makes buttercream. She falls victim to DeWolfe, but she is very defiant and bold. She is the exact opposite of the typical 60’s domesticated lady, as she curses, smokes, and honestly doesn't care about anyone. She is fiercely independent.

Her personality is rough. Her motivation is to reclaim what is rightfully hers. While her character is a little vague right now, I want to work with the actress in order to bring her to life.

  • "(Showing fierce independence) Well, men are just shallow idiots who can’t cook or clean. All they do is drink and complain about why they drink, mostly their wives. They overindulge in everything. Besides, like you’ve probably deduced, I’m independently wealthy. Ever heard of Miss Carver's Easy-Cream Butter? My family’s been making that for years.”

  • "(Seductive) Are you sure there’s no room for negotiation? I mean, It is quite a lot of money for a petite girl like me."

  • "(Rudely): Excuse me, but are you DeWolfe? Do you have it? Before we do anything, you will show it to me. Now."

Appears very briefly. Rough voice and cold demeanor.

  • "(Disgruntled) Hey, did you see the Indians game last night? It was such a heartbreaker. McDowell walks six nobodies and Clemente hits a two-run homer in the eighth! We should just go hang ourselves, we’re so disgraceful."

  • "(Slightly bitter) I guess not. Still, it’ll be nice to win a World Series once in a blue moon. Not that it’ll happen when I bet on them."

  • "(Melancholic) Everyone's in here for someone."
