The Last Gladiator (paid project)

The Last Gladiator (paid project)

Project Overview

This is the story of Penny Hooper. Penny is a 17 year old high school senior in Central Illinois. She plays saxophone in the marching band. A very bright but introverted girl, she has secretly made big plans for herself. Ever since her older brother Alex died, her family has basically gone crazy. Her kid brother Tony has become totally obsessed with aliens. Mom just drifts around in a dream world and makes cookies all the time. And Dad has decided to build a bomb shelter in the back yard, just in case the Italians attack. Seriously. It's all too much for Penny. She will lose her mind if she doesn't get away from the lunacy, not to mention the suffocating limits of life in Springfield. So she's got an escape plan, get into Juilliard music school in New York, join an orchestra, and become a wealthy but very private cat lady, where she can finally have the peace and quiet of being totally alone.

But all her plans are put on hold one late September evening, when she rescues a stranger drowning in the lake, a stranger who seemingly came from out of nowhere, and who speaks only Latin. Her kid brother is convinced he's an alien. Her mom thinks he's an actual angel. Her dad thinks he might be a spy sent by the new dictator in Italy. But she's sure she's seen his face before, and she's determined to figure out who he is, and expose his scam, so she can get him out of her life before he messes things up even worse than they already are. But it's not that simple, because there are also villains, and secret chambers, and ancient books, and things that border on magic.

So, that's the concept. The script is basically written. I'm just cleaning it up right now. It's a five-episode limited series, about 44 minutes per episode, with a complete story arc, and a potential for sequels. Eventually I will try to sell the concept to one of the streaming services. But for now I'm focused on putting together a proof of concept, an animatic storyboard, fully acted out with voice actors, a musical score, etc. A complete audio movie.

So I'm putting together a team. I need the voice actors to do a full table read of the entire series. This means more than just doing voices. This will require real acting ability, like you're doing it for Netflix (or whoever). I need this to be a rich and convincing story, full of adventure and engaging characters people can really connect with emotionally.

I am also interested in finding someone who can do the animatics. It's not necessarily limited to any one visual style, so I'm not going to insist on anime etc. It really just needs to be good, consistent artwork that creatively expresses the story. It doesn't need to be a full animation. More like a high-end storyboard that flows with the audio.

Additionally, if there are any directors or producers out there who would be interested in helping out with this project, I would be happy to have those conversations as well.

    Hi, All!

    ..

I realize it's been a while since I've posted anything. But I know there is a lot of interest in this project, and I wanted to provide a brief snapshot of where we are.

    ..

First, what an amazing team! We've had a chance to meet in discord and get to know each other, discuss our backgrounds & interests, and my socks have just been totally knocked off by all these incredibly cool, intelligent, creative, talented people.

    ..

The script is getting show-ready. Episode 1 is ready for recording, and a clean version of Episode 2 is about to drop. So far the cast really seems to like it, so that's incredibly good news (yes, I have imposter syndrome). I expect to start actual recording sessions within the next week or so, depending on cast & crew availability. Still tweaking some things in pre-production.

    ..

So thank you to everyone who has been interested in our progress so far. It's always so interesting to watch what was just the faint whisper of an idea turn into something real, and I'm so glad to be a part of it.

    ..

    Until next time,

    ..

    Joe Bell

  • Progress Report

Hi everyone. I'm thrilled to have so many still interested in this project. As you know, we've put together an amazing cast. Every one of them is uniquely gifted and extremely talented. I feel like I'm at the beginning of one of those movies where they've gathered all the superheroes into one place and there's this slow motion scene with them all walking together, ready to take on the big bad. Cue the 'we are awesome' music. So yeah, if you haven't noticed, I'm really excited to see this finally happening.

    ..

I did want to follow through on an earlier promise. I said I would provide some feedback for people who auditioned but didn't get cast. But it's hard. You were all great in your own way. For everyone who was a finalist, seriously, you were all really great, and you all could have played the role. In every case, I ended up going with the one person I thought most sounded and felt like the Penny or Petrus or Tony etc that lives in my imagination.

    ..

For those of you who weren't finalists, a few encouraging words also. Many of you very nearly were finalists. I listened to many, many auditions, over and over and over, trying to get the list narrowed down to just the top three. So it was really hard.

    ..

For some though, just being honest, there were problems. Let's talk about audio quality. I had so many really good, high quality auditions to choose from and so many auditions to get through, I found it easier to just take a pass on the auditions where there were obvious and serious problems with the mic or the gear or the room environment. Also, in some cases there were obvious errors in the recording, mysterious gaps, strange pops, unexpected dropouts. So here's a hot tip: Give your recording one final listen before you upload it, and pretend you're the decision-maker whose already getting lots of really, really good auditions.

    ..

The only other thing I'll comment on is emotional investment. It's just a fact that some of the auditions didn't show any real interest in my characters. Some didn't even bother reading the sides I provided. So those were easy to set aside. But there was this middle range. They were good voice actors, and they obviously cared enough to come up with a decent reading. But something was lacking. Energy. Timing. I don't know. It sounded mechanical somehow. Like they were just reading the lines. When you're emotionally invested in a character, it really shows. Maybe the director didn't give you enough information, so your interpretation went off in a different direction. Honestly, that didn't matter to me, at all. I even loved some of your off-point ad libs. What I did care about is whether you tried to get inside the mind and heart of this person. It's like making music with a saxophone. You can play the notes, or you can play the song. I wanted players who could feel the song, and I found them.

    ..

Anyway, I have a great team, and we should be getting down to production very soon. I'm fine-tuning the script over the next week or two, so It'll be pretty quiet during that time. But then it's show time, and I will start posting updates here again. Thanks again for your interest and support!

  • Finalists for Leads and Composer

As I promised, I have now reached out via DM to the finalists for Penny, Petrus, and the Score Composer. I can't tell you how much I appreciate everyone who auditioned. It was so difficult to choose. There were so many great auditions. In the coming days, I will provide feedback about what I learned from your auditions. I also plan to continue using these updates to keep everyone aware of our progress. I really appreciate all of your support, and most of all, your belief in this story.

  • Casting Decisions In Progress

So many of you have submitted outstanding auditions. But it's crunch time now, and as you know, I can only choose a handful. I have sent out DMs to the finalists for all positions except the two main leads, Penny and Petrus, and the Score Composer. Hopefully I will have all three of those figured out by tomorrow night. I will send out another update as soon as I have answers.

  • Deadline

Wow. So many amazing auditions. But the deadline has passed, and I can only pick a small handful of you. This is hard for me. At one level, it was great. I loved listening to you. I could really feel the passion in your performances. But now I have to decide. So I will be narrowing it down to the finalists over the next few days. When I get down to 3 finalists for each role, I will send you a DM and we can talk a bit. Sort of like an interview, but if you're a finalist, you've already knocked my socks off, so hopefully more just a way to get to know you a bit. It's one thing to have 'a particular set of skills.' (Liam Neeson, I'm lookin at you). It's another thing to have good team chemistry. I will keep everyone up to date via these project updates.

  • (desperate, trying to convince him not to fight) I don’t care about Butoli. He’s not a threat to us anymore. We have the ship. We can go anywhere. (takes his hands) Maybe we could even go back in time. It’s a time machine, right? You could go back to your family. You could do anything you wanted. We can do anything we want. We aren’t stuck here. Don’t you get that?

  • (talking to her controlling mom on the phone) Hi. It’s under control. I ... Yes, I know but ... But that’s ... He probably just ... But Mom ... (deep sigh) Ok. Ok. Whatever. We’ll be home in a few minutes.

  • (why she's sketching the stranger mom invited into the house) Drawing a police sketch ahead of time. In case we’re all dead in the morning. At least this way they’ll have some idea what the perp looked like.

Over time, Petrus learns English, and becomes almost a member of the family, but he still can't win Penny's trust. Eventually he realizes he must take the noble path and cause Penny no more difficulty, so he decides to leave without warning, determined to deal with the ghosts of his past on his own. But it's too late for simple solutions, and he finds he's become entangled with Penny in ways neither of them could have imagined.

  • (trying to convince Penny not to take Petrus to the ER) No way! The mother ship is probably looking for him as we speak. If we take him to the ER, the Area 51 people will swarm in here and take him to some black ops science prison and it’ll turn into an intergalactic incident and the aliens will get mad and blow up the whole planet and it will all be your fault!

  • (trying to explain his latest theory about Petrus) Ok, hear me out. What if the aliens abducted him, like I said, but it was like thousands of years ago, and they took him to their planet and kept him in a cryogenic chamber, like Walt Disney’s head, and then they just recently reanimated him and sent him back to Earth, to here and now? It would explain everything. The space bubble, him not knowing about phones, even the Latin.

Butoli has risen to power in Italian politics because all his opponents have a bad habit of disappearing without a trace. Everyone is afraid of him. But he has a grand vision for his people. he alone can make Italy great again, and restore the old empire of Rome to it's rightful place of glory. There is one who can thwart him, one who was prophesied long ago, and now his sign in the heavens has been seen ... over Springfield Illinois.

  • (Butoli's assistant worries the games are too harsh) Let them object. The path to power runs through a river of blood, and only when the people are ready for blood are they truly ready for the peace I can bring them. There will be one victor, one people, one peace. I will not be denied this time.

  • (deep in the catacombs, alone, he stands before a tiled fresco, the silent image of a beautiful woman being carried by mourners. He touches her face, and speaks to her, as to a long-lost lover) It is time, my light, my life, my love. He is here at last. He who took you from me. Time now ... for justice.

  • (Petrus has been told Penny is dead) Ah. Dominic. He loves to bend the truth a little. But I find him useful. Your friend is not dead. I am no barbarian. I have only buried her alive, according to the ritual of the vestal virgin. I can unbury her and return her to you at any time. Why would I throw away the one small coin with which I could buy your allegiance?

It is precisely his delusion that makes him weak. No. I detest narcissists as much as you do. I simply enjoy suffering, the way others enjoy music, or fine food. It’s like an aphrodisiac. It makes me feel so .. alive.

  • (Dominic traces a knife along Penny’s cheek.) We all wear masks. We all hide our true nature, even from ourselves. But I don’t hide. I’m that one truly honest person in the room. Penny's mom, Mary Hooper, has been through a lot. her oldest son Alex died overseas in some small military operation not on anyone's radar.
