The Lark at the End of the World

The Lark at the End of the World

Project Overview

"Even in Hell, life goes on..."

Two years ago, the town of Embley was ripped from the ground and dropped into the middle of a hellish otherworld. Thousands of Daemons are desperate for a chance to rip them apart, or crawl inside their skulls. Only two things protect them; their wits, and the mysterious Line in the Sand which keeps the Daemons at bay.

Despite the outward horror of their situation, the residents of Embley do their best to live, not just survive. At the heart of their community is The Lark, a humble little pub where everyone is welcome and nobody goes through hell alone.

Hello everyone! This Casting Call is here to fill the roles for the remaining episodes of The Lark! We've rehearsed up to Episode 4 and we're looking for the final few cast members to join us for our final three episodes. We're aiming to start releasing episodes at the end of this year!

As far as the auditions go:

  • All characters will be cast gender and race blind. The only exception to this is Lucia, who is locked as a female character. If you would like to audition for a character, but are hesitant because of their gender, I say go for it anyway. I would much rather rewrite them than lose out on an interesting performance.

  • We would like this production to have the highest production value possible.XLR microphones are prefferred and please ensure there is no background noise in your audition.

  • Please submit three takes for each line.

  • This project does not endorse the use of AI, and it will not be used at any level of production. Your voice is your own and it will stay that way.

On your successful audition we will be co-ordinating production over Discord, it is reccomended you have an account on there prior to submission. project does not endorse the use of AI. It will not be inlcuded at any stage of production.

Thank you for taking an interest in our show and we're excited to see what you've all got!

Marcus [Episode 3]

Marcus Carrol used to think all he wanted to be was a proper teenager; the kind that chatted up girls and snuck beer out the house. Underneath all of that bluster and boyish charm though, what he wants more than anything is to protect his family. It's just a shame that he only learned that after he screwed up, and got whisked away to Perdition before he could come back to them. He's been stuck there two years now and every time he's tried to escape, he's just ended up back where he started. His only hope now is the Daemon whispering in his ear. He knows he's a screw up, and he's tired of making things worse every time he tries to fix his mistakes. But what else can he do?

I initially imagined Marcus as an Irish lad, but I'm open to other accents as well.

  • [Sarcastic] Sure, you wanna help me. And I gotta do what? String up a goat, fetch you a virgin? Piss off.

  • [Genuine, soft] Did you say sorry before you left? ("I was gonna wait till I got back"). Don’t wait. Never wait. You can’t leave shit like that unsaid. You never know when it’s gonna be, you know... ‘the day’

  • [Defensive, breaking down] I just wanted a break! Mum died in the war, Dad fucked off. It was me, my sister and my Gran. Then some shanker knocked over her stall and I had to take care of both of 'em. Every day. It's all I ever did. So when this girl came up to me, said she was interested... it was just gonna be the one night! What's wrong with that? I'd earned it! But no, no, no - she had to live in fucking Embley! Had to drag me off to Perdition right along with all of you! So yeah, I cut a deal! It's been two years, how much longer do you want 'em to wait for me!?

The Disciple/River Grace [Reccurring]

100 years ago, River Grace was a Bounty Hunter, who made a killing from rounding up convicts who tried to escape from Easelford Gaeol. They held themselves to a high standard; always polite, always used the proper fork at dinner and always dressed proper for the occasion. These are the things that seperate good, just people from the feral dogs that roam this world. Deep down though, River knows that they have the same sickness as these creatures. They're like to hunt too. The law is just their excuse.

Since then, River has entered the service of Marwolaeth. The Crowmaker. The Cold God. The God of Justice and The God of Death. They are his favoured disciple and have been given many gifts. They cannot die without his permission, and now they have an opportunity to hunt down and judge many sinners. Oh yes, they have a charmed life indeed.

The Disciple is noticably from an older time period than the other cast members. They don't have a specific gender or accent, but I would be interested to see auditionees lean into this element.

EDIT: The name of the God in Line Three can be pronounced a few different ways but the one we're going for in this show is (MAR-WOE-LAY-ATH). My deepest respect to all of the actors who have recorded auditions before I made this edit, you have gone boldly into a strange and terrible place. I won't be factoring the pronounciation into any of my casting decisions.

  • Are we to speak with mummer's names then? In that case, I am The Disciple. I bear no title more honest than that.

  • [Recovering from a gunshot wound] It is considered a faux pas to shoot one's host through the head. Though I confess, I am fond of this jacket and thus approve of your aim. Perchance, could I borrow a hat from you? It does not do to leave an unsightly wound uncovered.

  • [Condemning a Prisoner] You profane the word of Marwolaeth. He who is author of our laws and priniciples. By his word we are made better than our forebears. By his word we are elevated beyond the beast. By his word we are just and kind and worthy of salvation. You could have been so much more. But you hate him, and thus reduce yourself. We pity you. We who hear his word. We who love and adore him. We pity you.

Lucia [Episode 6]

Lucia was once a killer, but she's trying to leave that life behind. All she wants now is to marry her fiance Ameridan and get into a more wholesome kind of trouble. However, she's hiding the fact that she's sick - probably dying. When Ameridan learns the truth, he starts crossing more and more lines in order to save her. And now she has to ask herself whether she truly loved him, or only thought she did.

I'm open to a range of accents for Lucia, but core to her character is that she is working class and takes absolutely no shit from anyone.

  • [Threatening] Sorry poppett, I don't think I heard you right? I'm meant to be getting married in a week and it sounded like you said I can't use the chapel, cause you pricks got a poker game going? Was that right? No don't tell me. Tell my wedding planner, Mr Flintlock.

  • [Confessing] The surgeon gave me a year. Two if I sit back and rest - so yeah. A year. (*Ameridan starts crying) No, don't. Don't cry. It's okay. Look at me. I'm still here, aren't I? Don't you start crying 'till I'm actually gone, my love. It's a waste of bloody time.

  • Eventually, everyone’s gotta choose a rule to live by. If you don’t, everything just passes you by. I know mine. I’ve always known mine. As a killer, as a tailor, as a wife. ‘No loose ends.’ I’m gonna help these people. I’m gonna tell Meri the truth and whatever he says after that, I’m gonna stand with him. That’s me. That’s my rule. And if I can stay true to that, then maybe it won’t feel like dying. It’ll feel like… like an ending. One of the good ones.

As the story progresses, more and more is taken away from Danya, until he is little more than a shell of his former self. He is trying to come back, but he knows there is not saving what has been lost.

  • Of course! Robert! How could I forget what you've done for me? Please, please sit! Try the wine! It's good isn't it? I hope so, it was a lot of work to find a tasteless poison. (Beat of silence). Ahhhhhh got you! It was your son I poisoned. More beef?

  • Can you save her? My daughter? ...then do it. Whatever you have to do. Do it.

  • [Broken, pleading, grieving] ...please. Don't die. The dead won't thank you. And we still need you.
