Polaris [An Original Animatic Series] - Pilot

Polaris [An Original Animatic Series] - Pilot

Project Overview

OVERVIEW

At around the age that a child enters high school, they may or may not develop a unique ability. These kids are called Specials. However, it is far too dangerous to leave a Special untrained and unsupervised in the real world. The Polaris Act was set in place to require that all new Specials attend a faraway institution away from main civilization in order to gain better control of their powers, and prevent them from being used in harmful ways.

Jane Canosa is a 14-year-old high school freshman who never believed she was special - until one day, she witnesses a tragic school bus accident on the side of the road. In order to help some of the kids escape, she discovers that she has the ability to conduct rays of light, breaking the glass and freeing trapped children. Jane is sent to Polaris, where she and her new friends Rory, Zander, Brielle, and Atticus begin to uncover the mystery of a strange phenomena occurring around the valley.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Polaris is an episodic animatic series that is currently in development. The project will be 13+ (no explicit content, but light cursing and violence). We are currently casting for Episode 1, but keep an eye out for future casting calls! Some important roles will not yet be filled, as they will appear later in the series. Keep in mind that for the time being, this is project is zero budget and nonprofit; everyone involved is in it for fun! This is an opportunity for all of us to hone our creative skills, and hopefully allow some aspiring voice actors to demonstrate their abilities. However, if we manage to monetize this project in the future, everyone involved will be compensated.

THE TEAM

The project is mainly managed by myself (Lee, aka Langle), with script revisions and additional art from Anthony (aka Windighost). If you are an artist, music producer or audio engineer/mixer and you are interested in participating, feel free to shoot me a DM on Discord (langle #8869). Once Episode 1 reaches post production, I will open up specific roles when we find out exactly what we need.

AUDITION RULES

- If you would like to record more than one take, please use the AABBCC format. Try your best to make each take sound different!
- Plug-in USB/XLR microphones are preferred, but very minimal background noise is required. Also, please try to limit your reverb (echo) by recording in a quiet, treated area! This tutorial is very helpful for room treatment on a budget.
- We ask for minimal editing on your audition. Basic touch-up is fine, but please do not apply any filters, music or dramatically alter your pitch. We would like to hear your raw take--if we prefer to apply any editing to your voice afterwards, we will do so!
- Please include your Discord tag in your audition. Discord will be our main form of communication, and all cast members will be asked to join our cast server.
- This is just a preference - please try to avoid overly exaggerated and cartoony voices, unless stated otherwise. Despite our story involving magic and superpowers, we would like our characters to remain as grounded and human as possible.

DEADLINES

The deadline to submit your audition is September 9th for all roles except Male and Female ExtrasCasting for extras will be ongoing until the roles are officially closed. No roles will be cast before the official deadline.

Latest Updates

  • Polaris [Update #4]

Casting for Episode 1 has officially wrapped! This was an incredibly difficult decision, but I would just like to thank each and every one of you for your submission! If you did not get a role, no worries--keep an eye out for our casting call for Episode 2. I will post another update here when that's out! There is SO much talent that I would love to get to work with, but unfortunately had to narrow it down to only a few this time around. Hope to see some of you there, and HUGE congrats to those who were cast! - Lee
  • Polaris [Update #3]

The deadline for VA auditions has officially passed! A HUGE thank you to everyone who has submitted an audition! We have received SO many amazing submissions. I was truly impressed by your performances and it was so fun to hear all of your individual takes on the characters! We will begin reviewing all of your auditions today, so keep an eye out on your CCC inbox in case you have been cast for a role. I will be reaching out to each cast member individually via CCC by the end of Saturday, September 10th. You will have until Wednesday, September 14th to let me know that you accept your role, and I will invite you to our cast server! Otherwise, I will be reaching out to another voice actor on our official shortlist. Let me know if you need additional time to make your decision. Male/Female Extras will remain open for the time being! Casting for extras will be ongoing, but the roles will close when all extras have been cast. Also, if you have not been cast for a role, don't worry! There will be another opportunity to audition for roles in Episode 2, so keep an eye out for a second casting call! It might take a little longer than anticipated, but I'll be sure to keep you all updated. Hope you all have an amazing day, and a big congrats to those who have been cast! - Lee
  • Polaris [Update #2]

Hi everyone! Friendly reminder that the final deadline for ALL ROLES except Male/Female Extras is this upcoming Friday, September 9th! We have been receiving a flood of submissions and I am super excited to go through each and every one! If you miss this casting call, don't worry -- there will be a 2nd CASTING CALL for voice actors for Episode 2 and a new casting call for crew members likely sometime within the next two weeks! There is still one lead role and a few supporting/recurring roles that will be casting for Episode 2, and Extras will be free to audition as well. Also, I would just like to clarify one thing that has been asked a few times. This project is 13+, so you do not have to be 18 to audition. There will be some light cursing and violence, but no explicit content otherwise! I am also always willing to work with actors if there is something in the script you are uncomfortable with. Hope you all have a wonderful rest of your week! - Lee
  • Polaris [Update #1]

Hello everyone! I'm blown away by all the submissions we've received already, and I just want to thank to everyone who has auditioned! As a quick reminder, the deadline is still September 9th, so you have a little less than 2 weeks left to get your auditions in. However, we may decide to extend the deadline a bit for EXTRA roles. If you have already auditioned for a role, I HIGHLY recommend auditioning for a male or female extra! There are way more talented voice actors than roles available, and we still have a ton of speaking roles for background and minor/recurring characters. Also, I have been combing through auditions and checking for audio quality. If your audition was rejected, it was likely due to quality, not performance. You are welcome to check background noise/reverb and audition again if you feel that the quality of your audio can be improved. In terms of project updates, I am currently storyboarding for Episode 1 and have been working on a short teaser! The Youtube channel that will be housing the project is still being worked on, and I'll be sure to let you all know when it's all been finalized. - Lee

Role assigned to: Vanetia

Jane is the 14 year old protagonist of this series, and the story centers around her personal journey after she discovers her new abilities. Jane, after witnessing a major school bus collision, manages to break the glass to free a few of the trapped children. After confiding in her best friend Oliver, she realizes that she has suddenly gained the ability to conduct light and heat. From there, Jane is sent to Polaris, where she and her new friends Rory, Zander, Brielle, and Atticus begin to uncover the mystery of a strange phenomena occurring around the valley.

Jane is known for being quite a talker--she's not necessarily outgoing and doesn't have many friends, but when engaged in conversations she has a lot to say. As an ambivert, she loves to socialize, but some alone time doesn't bother her. She has a bit of a quirky, awkward energy about her, and tends blurt things out or lose focus. [Line Count: 96]

We are looking for someone who can convey a youthful energy in their voice, but not too high-pitched or childlike. Medium to medium-high is the target vocal range. As the lead, Jane has the highest involvement in the series, and many lines will consist of long strings of dialogue.

  • [Rambling, speaking fairly quickly] Oh. Right. So we got out of the car, and there was this HUGE school bus just... on its side. And there was smoke everywhere, and I didn't know what to do, but I saw my dad run over and I figured I should probably help too. But I was so scared cause I thought, y'know, I've never really seen a dead body before. Well, except my grandma, but that was like six years ago and it was sort of an open casket thing, so it wasn't really that gruesome or anything...

  • [After using her powers for the second time] I don't know why I thought to do that. But it just felt right.

  • [Panicked, trying to put out a fire] I don't think my powers work in reverse, Oliver!

Adalyn Mayer

Role assigned to: Rachel Schumacher Kat Quinton

Adalyn is a 15 year old with lunar empowerment abilities. Adalyn is the most integral character in the overall story behind Jane, despite having less screen time than the leads (thus why she is listed as Supporting). She will have much more involvement later in the series.

Adalyn is extremely resourceful and self-sufficient, choosing to solve problems on her own instead of asking for help from others. She is very opinionated and can take it personally when somebody doesn't agree with her. She tends to be very revenge-driven; she wants to see harm come to the people who did her harm. Having very recently lost her younger sister and subsequently imprisoned for using her powers illegally, she is fairly withdrawn and distrustful of those around her. However, she certainly has a soft side, and is especially sympathetic to those who are younger, less experienced, or generally more wholesome. [Line Count: 10]

Adalyn is a complex character--we are looking for someone who can convey a wide range of emotions, from confrontational and aggressive to soft and emotional. The target vocal range would be medium to medium-low, though be sure to keep her age in mind!

  • [After being told about the harm she caused to two high schoolers who had been bullying her] They deserved it. And they're not kids, they're those Senior pricks who've been pissing me off all year.

  • [Confrontational] So you're taking me away from this prison, only to put me in another one. And you expect me to be cooperative?

  • [Apologetic] Look, I don't mean to be so standoffish. Just... rough week, you know?

Role assigned to: Amber Deandra

Colette is the 24 year old sole recruiter for Polaris and has the ability of performing deep psychic connections with other specials. She has a very professional demeanor, and rarely shows or says what she's truly thinking. She is very good at de-escalating situations and making the people around her feel comfortable and safe. However, deep down, she's deeply unsatisfied and craves to escape from the life they've given her. [Line Count: 29]

Colette keeps her tone very professional and diplomatic, rarely breaking character. There is no particular vocal range in mind; however, you may try a slight French accent if you are comfortable with doing so. If you decide to try out an accent that is not your own, please make sure you have a separate additional take in a North American accent.

  • [Professional] I hope you understand that our job is to keep you under strict supervision, at least for the time being. I'm sure you're aware of what this is referring to?

  • [After Jane asks Colette if she feels restricted] It's alright. I'm not a prisoner. They give me my own roof over my head, and everything I need to live comfortably. You don't have to worry, okay?

  • [Politely] I'll see you then. Stay safe, and--[Much colder, there is a quick scene transition] Don't do anything stupid.

Role assigned to: Ren Alberg

Rory is one of the four secondary lead members of the cast. He has pyrokinetic powers and can summon and manipulate fire. He can summon small flames or large bursts of fire, similar to that of a flamethrower. When he is angry, his abilities come easier, and he can also unintentionally generate fire.

Rory is outgoing and very charismatic. He has a tendency to get startled by small things and is often very jumpy. At his worst, he has difficulty communicating his feelings and will often choose to express negative emotions through bursts of anger. However, he is typically pretty cheery and gets along with people very easily. He can make friends with anyone, regardless of who they are. [Line Count: 22]

Rory should have a fairly expressive and youthful voice. Though I'd like to hear a good amount of expression, try to avoid sounding too cartoony or anime-like! The dialogue should flow naturally.

NOTE: Rory is canonically trans, so non-binary and trans actors are encouraged to audition!

  • Ah, there they are! We were wondering where you've been all this time. I'm Rory, and that's Zander. And you're... wait--no, let me guess.

  • [Lighthearted, he tries to intimidate Zander by conducting a small flame] You wanna say that one more time, bro?

  • Whoa, definitely not pyrokinesis, but whatever it is, it's cool as hell.

Role assigned to: SullivanRGordon

Zander is one of the four secondary lead members of the cast. He has shapeshifting abilities, though he is only able to shapeshift into a living creature. He can shapeshift into an animal of any size, but if the creature is particularly large it drains him of his energy.

Zander is is very outgoing, dazzling and confident. Despite being made fun of his entire life, he has never cared about what other people think of him. He has a great sense of humor and always has a new story to tell. However, he also has a tendency to be a bit vain, and often soaks up much of the spotlight. Despite this, he gets along with Rory very well, and they eventually become best friends. [Line Count: 14]

Zander's voice should lean on the feminine side, though try not to lean too much into stereotypes!  He should be very expressive (more so than Rory). Zander is the only role where cartoony and exaggerated voices will be considered.

  • [Playful, not an ounce of seriousness] Nope. We literally just met like an hour ago. But I already know that I'm gonna hate this loser.

  • Hah. You guys and your lame ass powers. Take a look at this! [He poofs, and suddenly becomes... a small rat. After a moment, he returns to normal.] Okay, that's not really what I was going with.

  • [Agreeing with something Jane said] That's what I'm saying, girl!

cast offsite

Brielle is one of the four secondary lead members of the cast. She has invisibility powers and enhanced senses, which are easier to activate when under highly emotional situations or when she has undesired attention placed on her.

Brielle is known for being a very quiet and reserved person by nature and by choice. Before being recruited to Polaris, Brie had very few friends in high school and kept to herself. Because of this, not many people know much about her, and she can only open up to those who she trusts dearly. Brielle is also very socially anxious, and fears being the center of attention. While her general reserved nature prevents her from reaching out to others, so does her social anxiety. [Line Count: 12]

We picture Brielle with an English accent (or subtle English accent), but take this more as a suggestion, not a guideline! Feel free to use any accent you feel comfortable with. While any vocal range is acceptable, Brie should have a soft, shy tone. POC actors are encouraged to audition!

  • [Greeting Jane after meeting her] I'm Brielle. Nice to meet you, too.

  • [After being asked to show her powers] Oh, uh... I don't really know if I can do it on the spot.

  • [Soft, a bit concerned] The boys are looking for you. Is everything okay? You seem... quieter than usual.

Role assigned to: Jordan Joshua

Oliver is Jane's best friend and confidant at Fairburn High School. He's a bit shy, but he always knows exactly what to say in any given situation. He only wants the best for Jane, and fully supports her when she discovers her powers. He also has jealous side, and this shows when Jane leaves for Polaris. However, his top concern is making sure she is safe and protected. [Line Count: 36]

Oliver should have a very lighthearted and friendly tone. His voice should be higher pitch, and sound fairly youthful.

  • [He sees Jane's powers in action for the first time] That was so... insanely... cool! Your eyes totally turned red for a minute there.

  • [Softly, comforting] Hey. I wouldn't either... [Lighthearted] But I know you're going to do great things! And every superhero needs a sidekick, right?

  • [Serious, under his breath] Are you okay? What happened? I missed you in first period.

Terran (pronounced TEH ruhn) is the Founder and Leader of Polaris. Terran is very skilled at manipulating Earth's gravitational forces through telekinesis, as well as causing mild earthquakes and moving/shifting terrain. Being the most powerful person in Polaris, he takes his duties very seriously. Terran has a very strong and confident presence, though he is also fairly relaxed. He rarely gets angry or upset, and has good control over his emotions. However, he is also fairly strict, and does not hesitate to enforce rules.

Terran should have a deep, booming and confident voice. His age is approximately around 50-60. His dialogue in Episode 1 consists of a page-long speech.

  • [Giving an announcement to an auditorium] Good evening, everyone. I am Terran, the Founder and Leader of the Polaris Summer Training Program. It is my honor to welcome the new generation of Specials into our home.

  • [Giving an announcement to an auditorium] We expect you to be on your absolute best behavior when you are here with us, and even more so when you return home. If you disobey the rules, there will be some... unwanted repercussions.
