The 12 Rules: Audio Play
Project Overview
The 12 Rules is a horror story from r/nosleep that I got permission to dub about a year ago, and haven't had time to put a proper casting call out until now. I'd heavily suggest reading the original story (which you can find here), mostly because it's great, but also because it will give you a better understanding of the characters and the world that they live in.
To give a brief synopsis, Rook (the main character, and our narrator) joins the technician team for a top-secret military base, where things aren't exactly as they seem. Paranormal entities, aliens, and a strange man called The Suit roam free to cause havoc and anomalies as they please. Rook is taught 12 rules to help him survive, but doesn't quite believe it at first until he manages to stumble across scenarios that attain to each and every one.
Now, obviously, because of the subject matter and for my own personal comfort, anyone under the age of 16 is not allowed to audition. Some other rules I'd like to lay down are:
- Have a good quality mic! No laptop/phone mics please. And make sure to have no background noise (you can use noise reduction in audacity to help with this), or peaking (use the compressor in audacity) in your audition.
- Be punctual with your deadlines!
- Again, 16+ only please.
- And please be respectful!

Thank you to everyone who auditioned, we've finalised the roles and will be casting pretty soon!! Look out for messages regarding some of the other roles such as the misc soldiers (which we can't cast to just one person).
Rook, aka Rookie (he doesn’t get a proper name other than the ones his colleagues give him) is the newest technician in the military base. At first he doesn’t believe the others when they warn him not to break the rules, but quickly learns to abide by them through his experiences.
Rook is the narrator of this story, and therefore the voice actor will be too. The workload for this character is certainly the bulkiest, so make sure you’re prepared for that.
Age: Adult (mid 20’s is my best guess)
Accent: North American
Role: Lead
As I neared I could see clearly that it was an old jeep stuck in the sand. It seemed like the kind of Jeep that probably hadn’t been used by line units since the early 80’s at the latest. What the hell was it doing out here?
“…Is this another one of those ‘mess with the new guy’ things or are you being serious?” I pressed, incredulous.
“..no..” I whispered. “No, no, no. Come on, there has to be another way. Please tell me you didn’t…what…why would you…we were supposed to walk out of here together!”
Lee is Rook’s supervisor at the facility. He’s kind of an asshole, and uses his subordinates as bartering chips to win back his son in an eternal wager he has going on with these weird alien dudes. His strongest motivation is to get his son back, and doesn’t give much of a crap about anything else.
Age: Adult (30’s-40’s)
Accent: North American
Role: Secondary
Well, based on how fucked up your truck was and the fact you were able to get to the second job site in under two minutes from your check-in, I’d say you broke the rules.
[Slightly desperate] We have to let it happen. Get me? We have to let it happen to them. It’s the only way. The next step is the wager, and we are going to win this wager, you hear?
He is creating things. Fucking monstrous things. Most of them are one-off’s but not all. Why else is this such an epicenter for shit that doesn’t make sense?
The Suit is the main antagonist of the series. He’s an ancient, powerful deity that’s able to bend time to his will. He’s also set on causing the destruction of humanity to spite his siblings, who locked him away in the aperture. The suit is cruel, vindictive, and manipulative. He believes himself to be an all-powerful god, though that’s not necessarily the case.
Age: Ageless (But he's definitely an adult)
Accent: English
Role: Secondary
Ok, I guess you’re right. You went through the Aperture and kept quiet, so that’s good enough for me. But..don’t. [The Suit chuckles] Don’t get the impression this was what escaped from the Aperture.
Wonderful. I had a…falling out, shall we say, with our plant manager. He tried to kill the power in the facility…and, well, his position was vacated. The job's yours!
[Scared, angry] How…how could I not have seen this plan in Mikey? They…they must have contaminated The Mimic with the affliction. That will be bad. Very bad. It will imbue The Mimic with powers it shouldn’t have.
Gabriel is a lab technician working for The Suit. He is described as blank faced, and is (probably) brainwashed to be loyal to his boss, to the point of dying for him.
Age: Adult (anywhere from 20’s - 40’s)
Accent: North American
Role: Minor
Yes and no. You flee, he will find you but he doesn’t see any of us as a threat, no matter what we know. We try to speak out and he appears and…well…obviously no one has been able to speak out. He knows nobody can do anything to stop him.
[Annoyed] I knew you’d be a problem. I told The Suit, I told him you’d try something slick. You think you can eavesdrop and not get noticed? We have cameras everywhere.
[Smug] Oh come on Rook, I’m not even breathing hard. A perk of following the one, true god. You’re done. It’s over. A new dominion is upon us.
Chris is described to be a tough, older man - probably a vietnam veteran. He’s standoffish and gruff, but unfortunately we don’t get to see much of him since The Mimic ends up eating, and assimilating him.
Age: Older Adult (40’s-60’s)
Accent: North American
Role: Minor
[Annoyed] Yea. You know I have. We all have. You have. Cut the small talk.
Hey, Lee, we are heading in.
Go to hell.
When Rook breaks the 1st rule, he comes across two undead corpses of old soldiers trying to get their truck out from underneath the sand. They ask him for help, and when he runs, they chase him. However, they make a surprising comeback towards the end. Their tongues are bloated, and fill their mouths so they have a slight lisp.
I'm putting both of them in one role, because it's such a small part that there's no point splitting it up.
Age: Adult (anywhere from 20’s - 40’s)
Accent: North American
Role: Minor
Hey, can you give us a hand? We’re stuck here.
Yesth, we’d apprethiate it.
Samantha was the guardian of the rift between reality, and the aperture, but got twisted and tricked by The Suit to letting him free. She now resides in the training facility, to consume anyone foolish enough to turn their radio off the assigned channels.
Samantha doesn’t say much, just moans and the occasional morse code message, but I’d still like for her to have some kind of voice.
Age: Ageless
Accent: Any
Role: Minor
[Ghostly] Yes.
[Do some spooky, ghostly moans that a tortured soul might make. Have fun with it]
The training facility the characters work at is pretty much constantly full of different soldiers. Unfortunately they usually fall victim to the various beings and ghouls that haunt the place, thanks to not following the rules.
I'd need a few people doing this, so the likelihood is if you audition for this you'll probably be cast.
Age: Adult (anywhere from 20’s - 40’s)
Accent: Any
Role: Minor
[Scared] Hey…Sergeant Mora…this isn’t cool. Okay, funny joke, ha ha, fuck with the private..good times right? My relief didn’t show up. No one else is answering the calls. This is pretty messed up.
[Monotone, under someone else’s control] Well, you won the wager again but you’ll only get these soldiers back for now. Maybe next time, Lee.
[Dazed] I…we missed the…
Yea….Yea..
