Tales Of Kenshi: Sakumo

Project Overview

Tales Of Kenshi is a series of stories taking place within the world of Kenshi, all roughly happening at the same time. While not all characters in the different episodes will interact, their actions will have an affect on the world greater as a whole.

This series requires those with an understanding of the serious world which this takes place, a world as harsh and dry as the desert winds which engulf much of the land.

I want to thank all the people who have submitted their auditions thus so far. I have been surprised that people have taken an interest in a project like this and I hope I can keep you all engaged with the project.

I am updating you all to say I am still writing more of this story and making more characters for people to voice.

Also I updated one line from Sakumo, the line "return like a fish to water" felt very dry so I updated it to "returned like a koi to a pond" to play on the fact that Sakumo (SA-KU-MO) is a Samurai.

Another note, it is SA-KU-MO for Sakumo, and OCK-RAN like cock but without the c, for Okran.

    And again, thank you.

Sakumo within this story is a slave of the Holy Empire, taken away as a prisoner of war during the crushing of Bast. He lost an arm during the conflict but due to his unwavering will and ability to defeat many opponents in unarmed combat, he was instead beaten to exhaustion to then be taken away to the work prison “Rebirth” (shown top right) to undergo a loss of willpower and indoctrination to convert him into a holy warrior or into fertilizer. As a result from the combat he endured before being imprisoned, he has lost use of an arm, however it has hindered his abilities very little and only made him focus his strength much more into his existing arm.

Past Life

He is a farmer from the region of Bast, a former United Cities citizen. Sakumo’s former life as a samurai for the United Cities has left him with experience in martial arts and heavy weapons. He has served with a company of samurai to defend several trading capitals within The Great Desert and has been a part of a personal guard for the Emperor during a celebration of the Slave Festival. After spending over a decade within the service of nobles and rich merchants, Sakumo traveled through the world for a time to work as a for hire swordsman and escort, he typically would guide many into harsh environments such as the Deadlands due to the settlement Black Desert City, a place renowned for its weapon and armor smiths, as well as its rich archives of information. Due to his extensive time spent traveling from there and back, he has many acid burns and scars from the time spent in the toxic rain, bleaching his hair to a point of no return.

  • “The mines of the Holy Empire are harsh, constricting and inescapable. In these mines the Shadow of Death is the only true freedom any prisoner hopes to achieve.” “But these iron dogs are smart, they keep us alive. Barely. With each lashing and beating we are stopped from escaping and kept in their jaws until our teeth rot and the meat is tender and weak and our minds become like clay and hearts like sand.” “In here Man, Shek, Hive and Tins are all brothers in hell. May Okran forgive us.” “I am Sakumo.” “This is my tale.”

  • “When I was a boy, I lived in Bark with my father. He was a fisherman by trade which meant we never went hungry, even if the fish tasted like copper. On my 10th nameday my father gave me a fishing pole and then I fed the family. At fifteen, my father was conscripted, he was too old to be a footman, but able enough to wield a crossbow. After some years he returned from service, in that time he’d lost three fingers and gained a limp, yet fishing returned to him like koi to a pond. I remember asking him on a quiet night how he became injured and he told me this…”

Katsu

Katsu (Victory in Japanese) was a Skeleton from the days of the Old Empire.

She was a ruthless Shinobi within Cat-Lon’s Empire, known for her skills in martial arts and assassinations, she was a scourge on those few human rebellions that tried to make a foothold during the Empire’s reign. However, due to her ruthless nature she was regarded as a monster by some of her allies within the Empire, most notably, Masamune who disapproved of her methods of extermination and control. Her pride did not let Masamune make such comments and so forth a duel took place between the two Skeletons. However, Masamune was a much more skilled and merciful warrior and when he decided to spare her life, she took his mercy as weakness and in doing so tried to attack him once he was walked away, but her hate was her downfall as Masamune sunk a blade into her chest and pulled his sword upwards, cutting her in two.

She fell to the ground, trying to move but she felt her final moments making its way, too much damage was done to make a recovery, so she put her intellect and power all into hibernation. Burn, Katsu’s mentor and partner, found her after the battle and took her to a repair bed to try and mend what was left of her, but nothing could be done as protocols within her systems prevent any tampering. Burn kept her top piece with him for many years, leaving the life of the Empire to protect her and tend to her, as he believed she would recover one day.

However in time, her body too was rusting away and drastic measures had to be made, the only useable and mendable parts of her left not bound by rust or age was her left arm. With no options, he bound her machine spirit and mind within that area and kept her attached to a generator. Within these times he would hear faint jitters and groans of gears within that arm, her soul still alive. At times Burn considered mutilating himself just so he could have her back but he knew her rage would infect his machine spirit and he would not be the kind man he once was, but a mutant of machine spirits and their minds would leave to degradation of intense decline.

As the story reach present, Burn has come to accept the loss of Katsu, still protecting her arm as he promised himself he would, but a human Samurai warrior, Sakumo, would meet the old retired bounty hunter who had nothing left but time to spend and the two would speak in friendly terms. Burn would see that Sakumo might have been someone he needed to meet as Sakumo was missing his left arm. Seeing the soul of youth, rage and desperation, he gifted the arm of Katsu to Sakumo, in hopes that both Sakumo and Katsu would find peace and justice in this new world, one trying to avenge what was taken and another to accept what has come.

This is an excerpt from the Kenshi Wiki regarding the Holy Nation.

The Holy Nation is a theocratic human state that controls a notable portion of the northwest lands of Kenshi. They are ruled by a "Phoenix" whom they believe to be a reincarnation of their first ruler.[1] Their religion, Okranism, is based around the dualism of the Okran, Lord Of Light, and Narko, Demoness of Darkness.[2] Holy Nation citizens are often interchangeably referred to as Okranites[3].

They are a xenophobic, zealous, and luddite society that rejects high-tech science and technology, oppresses women, non-human races, and anyone who does not agree with their religious beliefs.[2] Male Humans sit atop their societal hierarchy, with no distinction made between Greenlanders or Scorchlanders. Passing patrols may heal injured human player characters or provide food if starving. Take care if knocked out nearby a slave camp however, as they have no problem with enslaving unconscious characters. Some activities within the Holy Nation are limited to male humans, such as turning in bounties, or interacting with certain NPCs.

  • “Okran’s Beard… there’s no wind today.” “Speaking of slaves… have you seen that new one we just brought in? One armed guy, he scares the hell outta me. He breaks stones better than any slave we’ve had.” “They said he was a farmer, somewhere close to the Dark Ones lands. He’s got the acid scars, he’s lying about his age.” “Hey, that talking dog story was pretty funny! That old bastard nearly made me choke on my cube, he’s lucky I didn’t thrash him.”

  • “Hmph, tell me about it. It’s so hot I can barely beat these slaves without feeling like I’m on fire…” “He’s just a heretic, I’m sure he has fire in his heart but eventually it’ll be snuffed out. I doubt his arm can last that long.” “You believe every story these slaves tell, don’t you? One day it’s about a slave who spoke to a talking dog, the nexts’ a bounty hunter sayin’ a Dark One rose from his grave and killed that Bugmaster.” “You’re too soft. You should get your ass back out there and get back to work instead of wasting your breath here.”

You are the role of Sakumo's Father, an older man who has experience war and is humbly retired due to injuries sustained in battle. An earthly accent would be fitting, something that would fit a retired fishermen, however don't over do the accent, it shouldn't define the character, only be an accent.

  • “We were crossing the Great Desert from Stoat to Brink before we were to be sent to the Southern Region for reinforcement. As we entered those hills we got word from our Scouts about Tech Hunters in the area… it didn’t sound right, Tech Hunters letting themselves get spotted… I felt like we were walking into an ambush… As night fell the sounds of whistles pierced the air, stabbing our ears like needles… then I watched as a Squadron of men fell without noise… the sound of their last breaths and the crushing of their armor put dread into all of us. Before we could position ourselves, a roaring tide of steel came at us, Tinnies and Shek hit us like a wave and we were lost into the tides of battle.

  • I found a rock to hide behind for a time and fired my crossbow, our squadron did their best to support our spearmen but, it slowly became futile, we lost more and more… and before we had a chance to retreat a cleaver came down upon me, cutting deep into my bone and costing me three fingers… Mako, our squad leader, plunged a sword into the bastard’s heart that wounded me and picked me up… Me, him and two others from our squad survived the ambush and we made our retreat back into the Great Desert and rounded up with a few other survivors. I was too injured to go back out so they shipped me back home and gave me severance pay for my service, but as I returned home I got word the next battalion that entered those same hills suffered the same fate, Mako wasn’t so lucky that time… I pray for them and hope Okran helps their souls…”

This section is taken from the Kenshi Wiki

"The Armour King is a Skeleton merchant who sells Armour gear in Armour King's Shop. He is a masterful armoursmith who produces high-end armor to give travelers superior protection.

Worth noting, he is extremely skilled in combat and is also protected by his Security Spider II sentries, and his personal thralls, who are also extremely skilled. He is one of a few traders who actively follows player's character around the shop and some way outside it as well.

He can be found at the Drowned Ruins in the northwest of the map, in the river next to the Arm of Okran. The only way to reach him is by swimming along the river, entering either from the south side near Blister Hill or the west side near Floodlands."

Armour King has the tone of a blacksmith, rigid, proper and dangerous, yet respectful. Andre the Smith from Dark Souls is a reference you can use, a dwarven smith is another, just imagine a man who's seen most if not all walks of life, yet they come to HIM for the best.

Do not worry about adding voice effects, those will be done in post, however if you would like to apply effects, you can. Make note of the Tales Of Kenshi Skeleton voices for effects as it should be similar.

  • [Armor King is a Skeleton, but he acts more like a blacksmith, he is wearing a clearly high quality Samurai Armor and his thralls watch him and the store like hawks.] Armour King “Huh…? Ho! What’s this, a man without a shell, yer a soft and weak human without armour, so what’d’ya need, meatbag?”

  • Armour King “Now ya wouldn’t happen to be lookin’ at my armour to steal… would ya?! I recomments against it, yer skin is soft… an’ weak…”

  • Armour King “Hm… you do look poor, but not stupid! Ha Ha Ha! Well, the cheapest we have is free! But free goes in the scrap pile, broken bits of scrap an’ cloth that couldn’t protect a newborn.” “You’re one o’ those Holy Thralls, looks like they beat yer hide raw. Shame, those dimwits… Well, I don’t do arms, not since the last era, but I know a man who can get ya one. He’s up north, he’s a lonely little hermit so he might pick on you a little bit, but he’s harmless.” “Well, risk your skin, besides I don’t think cannibals like scar tissue anyway, hear it’s no good for cookin’. Ha ha ha!”

Burn The (Ex) Bounty Hunter
closed
Deferred: Agreed Amount
Role assigned to: Trent Poe

Burn is a skeleton who was an experienced scout and fighter for the Second Empire, he was a crucial step in the Skeleton's rise and fall due to his intelligence gathering, combat analysis and extended memory drives which allow him to retain more information without resulting in robot madness (In short, wise, experienced and resourceful). Burn is the only lover of Katsu and was her caretaker when she was planted into her arm. He tended to her and talked to the arm like she was still alive, technically she was, and has had time to grieve the loss of her, understanding she had to go, but not forgiving who did it.

Burn has a tone of someone who will bust your balls just to see if you're hotheaded enough to make a mistake, however he has a rather gracious nature, understanding human nature better than most due to how long he would spend in the field watching their daily life to find crucial information.

Take this character how you will, accents are fine, I want what you imagine to fit this voice.

  • “So what’s your name Meat Bag?” “Sakumo, You’re a Samurai aren’t ya. Still naming themselves like they know the damn language.” “Eh… Forget it.” [The camera looks at Sakumo’s arm] “That’s fresh isn’t it. You don’t look like a man comfortable with only one arm.”

  • “What, did you beat you, starve you and try to make you a chrome headed zealot?” “That’s what I thought, you’re nothing special kid, maybe as dangerous as a newborn Spikeback, I bet I could throw a Spikelet and do more damage than you did.”

  • Burn “So, how did you find me? I don’t know many people and those I did are dead.” Sakumo “An old smith, Armour King, told me you had an arm for me.” Burn “Armour King huh? He’s still in that valley, guess he just got back from dealing with competition. The old fart must’ve scouted me out before settling down again. But yeah, he’s right, I do have an arm for you… but… I need to know what kind of man you are first. You’re obviously not hotheaded, but I can see something in your eyes, there’s a monster in you. Have you tamed it?”

  • "Nowhere in this world is safe. People are either trying to burn us at the stake or they're trying to eat us alive... But at least the cannibals are good for one thing: Target practice."

  • "I've seen many of my sisters die in battle. Witnessing such needless end of human life never gets any easier. Many of my comrades have asked, 'is the battle pointless? Is it all for nothing?'... No, I don't believe so. The Holy Nation will eventually fall on its own, given enough time. Why? Simply because it neglects half of its own population. Some of the Flotsam rebels make up some of the best ninjas in the world, hands down. The Holy Nation are fools for not utilising the skill of these women: a society that denies half of it's potential will eventually fall. But if we can prevent the suffering of our daughters even the slightest bit by speeding up our oppressor's downfall, the battle is most definitely not pointless. It's worth everything.

I am looking for someone who can mimic the style of the art piece below or something similar, I am not looking for detail but I am looking for consistency. You will be making panels that portray Sakumo's memories and feelings, you will be using a generally earth tone palette for the colors and occasional stand out colors to emphasize a particular feeling or moment. As stated, DETAIL is not needed, but shape, tone and style are.
