Sakumo within this story is a slave of the Holy Empire, taken away as a prisoner of war during the crushing of Bast. He lost an arm during the conflict but due to his unwavering will and ability to defeat many opponents in unarmed combat, he was instead beaten to exhaustion to then be taken away to the work prison “Rebirth” (shown top right) to undergo a loss of willpower and indoctrination to convert him into a holy warrior or into fertilizer. As a result from the combat he endured before being imprisoned, he has lost use of an arm, however it has hindered his abilities very little and only made him focus his strength much more into his existing arm.

Past Life

He is a farmer from the region of Bast, a former United Cities citizen. Sakumo’s former life as a samurai for the United Cities has left him with experience in martial arts and heavy weapons. He has served with a company of samurai to defend several trading capitals within The Great Desert and has been a part of a personal guard for the Emperor during a celebration of the Slave Festival. After spending over a decade within the service of nobles and rich merchants, Sakumo traveled through the world for a time to work as a for hire swordsman and escort, he typically would guide many into harsh environments such as the Deadlands due to the settlement Black Desert City, a place renowned for its weapon and armor smiths, as well as its rich archives of information. Due to his extensive time spent traveling from there and back, he has many acid burns and scars from the time spent in the toxic rain, bleaching his hair to a point of no return.

  • “The mines of the Holy Empire are harsh, constricting and inescapable. In these mines the Shadow of Death is the only true freedom any prisoner hopes to achieve.” “But these iron dogs are smart, they keep us alive. Barely. With each lashing and beating we are stopped from escaping and kept in their jaws until our teeth rot and the meat is tender and weak and our minds become like clay and hearts like sand.” “In here Man, Shek, Hive and Tins are all brothers in hell. May Okran forgive us.” “I am Sakumo.” “This is my tale.”

  • “When I was a boy, I lived in Bark with my father. He was a fisherman by trade which meant we never went hungry, even if the fish tasted like copper. On my 10th nameday my father gave me a fishing pole and then I fed the family. At fifteen, my father was conscripted, he was too old to be a footman, but able enough to wield a crossbow. After some years he returned from service, in that time he’d lost three fingers and gained a limp, yet fishing returned to him like koi to a pond. I remember asking him on a quiet night how he became injured and he told me this…”

Two words I want to say in your take were pronounced differently are Sakumo and Okran. Sa-ku-mo is how to say his name. Ock-ran is how to say Okran. However really great take, great work and I liked the despair in his voice. Reminds me of samurai jack in terms when he's reflecting on his past.
