Star Fox Event Horizon

Project Overview

--- What is Star Fox Event Horizon? ---

Star Fox Event Horizon is a free fan made game. The project's goal was to create the most official feeling Star Fox game possible after years of franchise neglect and increasingly unpopular sequels that deviated wildly from the series' roots as a Space Combat Shooter. In terms of gameplay, Star Fox Event Horizon seeks to build off of the original Star Fox and Star Fox 64, with a very heavy emphasis on fighter craft, tank, and submarine combat in real time fully 3d environments. Despite this, the game pools characters, events, and lore from across the entire series and attempts to make a single large game that spans the entire timeline of the series. This game will be fully voiced, and in fact some of the original voice actors of the series, (such as Estelle Ellis, the voice of Krystal) have become involved in the project and are reprising their roles. There are still many other characters that needs voices, and that is where this casting call begins.

---Current Priority---

Star Fox Event Horizon takes place across many years and is divided into several different eras. These eras roughly correspond to the existing Star Fox games, such as the Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64), Saurian Crisis (Star Fox Adventures), etc. I am tackling the game in order, working on each era chronologically. Currently I have finished all of the levels for the Lylat Wars era, and most of the characters and details in this casting call will focus primarily on that set of missions. As more progress is made I will add and update additional roles on Casting Call Club.

Do note that there will be spoilers that will have to be discussed with some of these characters.

---General Rules---

More so Pet Peeves than Rules these are by no means absolute and I am always willing to break them and make exceptions. They are just something to keep in mind with how I think and pick Voice Actors.

- Please try not to fake accents. If I specify a character has a particular accent, I would prefer a voice actor that naturally has that accent. I will and already have made exceptions to this, but it’s very easy to detect fake accents even with decent voice actors.

- Please attempt to play characters that are close to your actual age. If you are relatively young, please do not try to play an elderly character like Peppy or Randorn. It’s generally very hard for a youthful person, even those that are good actors, to pull off a convincing voice that sounds much older than they actually are. I have received countless voice acting attempts from very young actors trying to sound older than their age and it never works.

- Please have actual voice acting experience. I don’t want to shun newcomers and potential new talent, but in the interest of saving time (since this is a massive project that is very time consuming) I will probably pass on people who lack experience unless something about them very clearly stands out to me.

- Please have an actual decent mic. You could have the most perfect Peppy perfomance ever but it will mean nothing if you sound like you are recording in tin can with hurricane wind in the background. I have received countless voice acting attempts on very bad quality mics and will likely immediately dismiss any samples that are not recorded on something decent.

- Please note that I will be extremely picky and it is nothing personal if I do not accept your voice acting submissions. More than anything I want this project to sound like a professionally made video game with actual adults and not a fan project that was thrown together online with inexperienced teenagers trying to voice characters. I fully accept that this goal might be a bit egomaniacal and unreasonable of me.

  • First Casting Call Warp Up

Hello there everyone! A few days ago this Casting Call for Event Horizon closed up, but that does not mean it's the end! We had just shy of 600 submissions, and there was quite an insane amount of competition, especially for Slippy. Even Jock Blaney, the original voice of both Wolf and Bill in Starfox 64 showed up! If you've not seen the trailer yet, he's returned to reprise his role as both characters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkEoeUEqL9c&ab_channel=IceCreamMan

While most of the characters in the first casting call have been picked, several have not... in particular Oda Fang and Admiral Pala. I do not want to discourage any of the voice actors that tried for these two parts, your submissions were good and will be considered for other characters! I just feel that Oda and Pala have a very specific sound in my mind and I have not heard what I am hoping to go for with these two characters yet.

In a few months there will be an additional casting call for the next batch of levels, which will have many new characters. These levels will take place entirely on Sauria and are heavily based on Star Fox Adventures, so expect plenty of dinosaur and reptilian characters to pop up during that casting call.

  • VA's are Being Selected

Hello there everyone! These last several weeks have been crazy (in a good way), with well over 500 submissions. I am extremely thankful so many people have taken interest in this project and want to provide their voice!

I have made my final choice for most of the roles in this current casting call, though I'm still in debate with myself over who to pick for several of the characters. Those that have been selected should be receiving a contact from me sometime in the next several days to a week, either here on Casting Call Club or on Discord if you have provided me with that means of contact. Please be patient, there's quite a lot of people I have to reach out to and organize.

If you do not receive a message from me in the next week or so or were not selected for any of the currently listed roles, do not fret! There will be an additional Casting Call when I complete the next segment of the game, which will be centered largely around Sauria and the events of Star Fox Adventures. Also feel free to try out for any of the extra parts, I have a pdf document with details on all the extra characters as well as a text file with some sample lines: https://www.sendspace.com/filegroup/pyfl0ngbytJNlgxljoFAQQ

  • The First Wave

Hello there everyone and thank you all so much for your submissions thus far! It hasn't even been a week and there are almost 350 submissions as of this post! It's taken me quite some time to get through them, but I've listened to everything submitted thus far and there are a lot of good tryouts. I set the deadline to a year from now... as I was not expecting so many people to flood in like this. It's probably fair to say I will be making picks long before December at this rate. I still would like to give more people a chance to try out, as there are several people I know who have contacted me but have not been able to make submissions yet. Since there are so many people to go through I will likely only reach out to the people I pick out for roles. So stay tuned... sometime in the next several weeks I'll probably start reaching out.

Falco Lombardi

Role assigned to: Jeroscope

An easily irritated, generally annoyed, and hard to get-along-with personality. He likely has a sense of overblown pride in his own skills. He is likely the best pilot on the entire Star Fox team though, so at the very least he’s earned his belief in himself. Falco’s voice actor will need to be able to convincingly pull off sounding irritated and angry, as Falco frequently becomes irritated and angry. Of all the characters across multiple games Falco has been portrayed the most consistently, so looking into his performances from any of the games will probably get his character across. I see a tendency of voice actors to really overblow his Brooklyn accent, however. I would prefer that Falco does not have such a strong accent, as I really do not hear it much at all in the actual Star Fox games. I am open to being convinced otherwise, however.

An elderly and eccentric character, Peppy’s notable trait is spouting both practical advice often couched in strange but humorous phrasing. Like Falco, he has a relatively consistent portrayal in all the Star Fox games without many changes, though his humorous aspect and weird comments were toned down a lot after Star Fox 64. I will point to Star Fox 64 as my preferred depiction of the character and what I hope to go for in Event Horizon. In terms of an accent, it’s changed slightly between the games but typically is some variation of a southern drawl. I will leave it up to the voice actor to pick which particular accent they feel is best and go from there. I would definitely prefer someone more advanced in age to voice him, rather than a young man trying to emulate an elderly voice.

Of all the characters on the Star Fox team, Slippy’s portrayal in the Star Fox games has changed the greatest. He’s very different in each game, the only real common trait being that he’s considered annoying to the player. Because there are so many different portrayals of Slippy he is the character I am willing to take the most liberties with. I personally would like to tone down his “annoyance factor.” He’s a mechanic and a repair man and he should come off as educated and intelligent, perhaps in a bit of a shlubby way. This is probably a character I will need to actually discuss with a voice actor and I will be open to suggestions and a VA’s own interpretation of the character. It should also be noted that Slippy will most likely have the largest volume of lines in the game, since he very frequently discusses the pre-mission briefings to the player and is in almost every level of the game.

Fara Phoenix has never had any spoken lines in the entire series, so this gives a lot of freedom of direction to go in. In Event Horizon she’s very impulsive and a thrill seeker, constantly switching between jobs in hopes of finding something that keeps her thrilled. She’s most notable for being a test pilot for experimental and unproven craft, and has a daredevil attitude to dangerous situations. As such she comes off as brave to the point of foolish and even a bit insane. I’ll likely need a voice actress that can pull off convincing laughter after surviving nearly life ending situations. As for an accent, I personally would be interested in some kind of Australian accent for the character.

Role assigned to: Tostemac

He’s a machine, universally portrayed in all the Star Fox games as having no real personality. While for the most part this is true in Event Horizon, I do want him to occasionally let slip that he’s more of a thinking machine than he let’s on, with very rare sarcastic remarks. For the most part though ROB’s dialog will be utilitarian and directly related to telling the player what is going on or about to happen within a level (“Incoming enemies from behind.”) A mechanical filter will be applied to the voice. I have no particular accent preference.

General Pepper

Role assigned to: kerber.mp3

Like Slippy, General Pepper has been portrayed in several different ways that are not entirely consistent depending on which Star Fox game we are discussing. He has been everything from an actual threatening military commander (Star Fox 1) to a generic “do gooder guy” who casually gives exposition and orders (Star Fox 64), to a dopey borderline senile incompetent old man (Star Fox Assault). For Event Horizon I really do want to lean into the notion that the General is not a complete fool. In Event Horizon’s portrayal of the galaxy there are many competing and petty warlords, and Pepper is yet another one of them. I’m not going for something outright malevolent or evil, but General Pepper should come off as more interested in his military ambitions and victories than the actual well being of the people under his command. As for his voice and accent, that has also changed radically between Star Fox games. I’ll likely be open to the voice actor’s input and I would expect this character to end up more different in Event Horizon than from his official appearances. I would prefer someone more advanced in age in voice him, though he is not elderly yet.

Colonel Shears has never had any spoken lines of dialog, so there’s free reign with the sound of his voice. I’ll likely be open to voice actor input and am willing to go in any direction with the sound of his voice. As for his personality, Colonel Shears is ultimately selfish and bitter. He betrays the Cornerian Army in a bid to overthrow General Pepper, who he sees as incompetent and reckless. I would appreciate making Shears sound like an actual threat and not a joke. He is responsible for killing off one of the main Star Fox team members during the game. His voice actor will need to be able to pull off sounding a bit like he’s in a panic for a certain moment of Shears’ dialog.

Katt Monroe has only had voiced dialog in two games, Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Zero, so I will naturally point to there as a reference. In both instances she is portrayed as flirt, in particular towards Falco. This relationship between her and Falco and her playful banter with him is retained in Star Fox Event Horizon. Additionally, she seems to rarely show any kind of fear or anger, often casually approaching combat situations as if they were just a game. I am open to different accents and voice actor input.

Another character who’s voice and personality has been portrayed as radically different in between Star Fox games. Personally I am only a fan of the way he is portrayed in Star Fox 64, so I will point specifically to that game. Leon is very arrogant and narcissistic, clearly in love with himself. He has absolutely no issues with murdering or gunning down anyone as a target. He should come off as the most threatening member of the Star Wolf team. I will be open to voice actor input.

Andrew has had several appearances in multiple Star Fox games, without too many differences between them. In all of his appearances he’s usually portrayed as incompetent and in way over his head, with a generally youthful and annoying voice. He is also very fond of his uncle, Andross. Event Horizon’s version of him will probably not differ too much. He is one of the youngest characters and should come off as immature and spoiled, at least at first. As time goes on and he inherits the resources of Venom he will likely go through a bit of a character transition. I have no strong preference for his accent and will be open to voice actor input.

In Event Horizon she was a big game hunter in her past, so she has a lot of experience tracking down and killing prey. The father of Krystal, Randorn is, for lack of a better term, a literal wizard. His only appearance was in the Dinosaur Planet game that ended up being transformed into Star Fox Adventures; he was sadly cut from the game during the transition. In Dinosaur Planet he is portrayed with a Scottish accent, and seemingly drunk for most of the game. In Event Horizon he’s a much more involved character even beyond the events of the Dinosaur Planet. He is elderly, and I would request someone of more advanced age to attempt to play him. I am particularly fond of Nicol Williamson’s performance as Merlin in the film Excalibur, and often imagine Randorn being portrayed in a similar way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwcNNbxUE-wa
