Once Upon a Wasteland: Season Two

Project Overview

"Once Upon a Wasteland" is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi romance set in the world of Bethesda Studios' "Fallout 76." Although it's set specifically in that milieu, it's intended to be accessible to everyone, regardless of whether they're fans of the franchise or not. It centers on the love story of Beth Kirby and Odessa Valdez and their battle to save the growing civilization in Appalachia.

The first season of the show has earned more than 50,000 downloads and is under consideration for several podcast and audio drama awards.

  • Thank you, everyone!

I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to audition for these roles. The response was overwhelming! Vitriol (my co-producer) and I are going through the auditions now. Because the Paladin and Jessica appear in the first episode, I'll cast those first. There also may be cases where I'll reach out to ask you about a role you didn't audition for because you feel like a fit for that role instead. I always try to make it a point to reach out to folks I don't cast directly, but because of the sheer number of auditions (over 100!) that's just not going to be possible this time. Please know that I greatly appreciate that you felt strongly enough about this project and the role or roles you auditioned for to spend the time and effort required to submit. There were some truly great reads in there and I wish I could cast all of you.

Role assigned to: Addison

Age: 32

Note: This character's name is not listed to avoid major spoilers for the second season. It's not "Eric." :D

A Brotherhood of Steel Paladin from California, this character is charismatic, charming, and confident, with a steady baritone voice that is authoritative but not overbearing. In less guarded moments, he’s capable of expressing great kindness and understanding.

A natural leader, he is genuinely likable and the people under his command want to follow him. He is canny, both in terms of military tactics & strategy as well as navigating difficult political situations thanks to growing up enmeshed within the power structure of the Brotherhood of Steel. He is startlingly physically attractive, with a rugged Joe Manganiello look and a heart-melting smile.

  • [The Paladin and Amanda have found themselves embroiled in the same battle. They are hunkered down and taking heavy fire]

    Paladin: "What's your name?"

    Amanda: "Amanda."

Paladin: [Calm, reassuring] "Hi, Amanda, my name's Eric. Nice to meet you."

    Amanda: "Got a plan, Eric?"

Paladin: "No, but we can probably figure something out. What do you say?"

  • Look, Leila, I had to find out what happened. I called in a lot of favors just to get this expedition approved, and I brought in people I know I can trust. I'm not here to take you home in shackles. Maxson gave me a wide berth to decide what to do with whatever we found when we got here.
    (beat)
So, other than still furious with me, how is she?

  • I never stopped thinking about you. Not for a second. I get that you probably still hate me, and I also get that I deserve it. But I love you, and that's one thing that's not going to change.

Role assigned to: W. Keith Tims

Age: Unknown, but appears to be 40-ish.

Devon is a man out of time, having resided in a realm that exists between universes for an indeterminate amount of time. He has a wise, sagacious air about him and seems to have access to a significant amount of knowledge and information about the past and even the future, some of which he’s not quite able to process. He speaks with a bit of subtle mystery and wonder in his tone, but it shouldn’t come across as hokey. Despite his current circumstances, he’s still very much human at his core.

Voice/performance references:

  • Devon: I was Devon McKnight.

    Odessa: Was?

Devon: I'm something different now. I'm still trying to figure out what.

  • [upon meeting Andrew Kirby]

I had a friend named Andrew, once. Or maybe I will. Things get kind of confusing in here sometimes.

  • This is the Nexus. Best I can tell, this place exists outside time and space. Or between universes, maybe. This would be a lot easier if I was a temporal physicist, but... I'm not. Don't suppose any of you are, are you?

Role assigned to: Kitty Lynn Rose

Age: 25

Jess is a junior Scribe that Odessa has been training since joining the Appalachian Brotherhood several months ago. She is inexperienced and sometimes unsure of herself but smart, enthusiastic, and eager to learn, and idolizes Odessa. Her voice is youthful but not childlike. She gets enthusiastic about things and can be excitable. Despite her occasional self-doubt, performs well under pressure - though she can let small things stress her out she's great in an actual crisis.

Voice/performance reference - Tally Craven from “Motherland: Fort Salem”

  • [full of awe and wonder]

Wow, look at this place! I've never seen anything glow like this... not uranium, not ultracite, nothing.
    (beat)
Hmm. Radiation levels aren't just normal, they're... non-existent. There's always some level of background radiation, but here? Nothing.

  • [slightly awkward, as though she knows she shouldn't be asking this question]

I don't mean to pry, but... what was Scribe Valdez like? Back in California, I mean. Has she always been this amazing?

  • [after discovering an unconscious Scribe Valdez]

Odessa! Are you alright? What happened? Oh no, oh no... Odessa! Wake up! We have to get you out of here!

Odessa’s former assistant back in California, Dave became a Field Scribe after Odessa left for Appalachia. He is intelligent, inquisitive, mature, and fiercely loyal to Derek. Has a slightly clipped cadence and that can make him sound curt, but he’s not purposely rude. Native Californian.

  • [genuinely excited to see his former boss]

    Odessa! You... you look amazing!
    (beat, gathering himself)
I was afraid we'd... lost you. But look at you! You're absolutely thriving! When can we go over everything you've learned? I'll talk to Paladin Rahmani so we can get started right away...

  • [after a machine reacts poorly to a switch being flipped]

What have you done?! Quickly, let's get on the other side of that wall. I don't what that sound means, but it doesn't sound good.

  • [seeing something that defies description, after being asked for his opinion]

I... I have no idea. This is beyond anything I've ever seen. Odessa, this is your backyard now... what do you think?

Age: 31

A Brotherhood of Steel Senior Knight, Randall (do not call him Randy) is very matter-of-fact, though rarely outright rude. He’s very capable but lacks Derek’s political acumen. He believes firmly in the mission of the Brotherhood and has maintained a lifelong friendship with Derek. Native Californian.

  • We don't have time for this. Sir, I need you to tell me exactly where that box came from and how long you've had it. The details are very important.

  • What the... he was just here! He's like a Cheshire Cat...

  • [talking to Odessa about the aftermath of her departure]

Randall: He really missed you, you know. I mean, he wasn't sitting in his bathtub crying and eating ice cream every night or anything, but what happened changed him.

Odessa: Not "what happened." What he did.

Randall: Yes, Odessa, I know. And so does he.
