No. 6 - Audiobook - Paid

No. 6 - Audiobook - Paid

Project Overview

No. 6 is a nine-volume novel series written by Atsuko Asano and published between October 2003 and June 2011. It has already gotten a Manga and Anime adaptation, which is where I got the pictures and character designs from.
The Books are ones of the best and most relevant I've ever read. I am currently searching for people to narrate and read the story in earnest. The Books consist of around 860 pages which have not been published in English, however thanks to 'Nostalgia on 9th Avenue' unofficial English translations are made available for this project.
I intent to publish the audiobook in segments on YouTube, since I think I won't be the only one who will enjoy listening to this adaptation. If this project makes any profit of some kind I will naturally make an agreement to split it between you guys. Some Roles get 5$ at the minimum for reading but that doesn't mean that it will stay that low and if successful the others will also receive appropriate compensation.
I hope I will find people as enticed and invested in this story as myself, in order to bring it to life once more. Multiple Auditions are also welcome, especially for minor and extra Roles.
Needless to say the usual requirements of microphone quality, professionalism, PayPal and Skype are required.                 I wish you the very best of luck! :)

Important notice! - This is not strictly of the Romance or BL genre (like the Anime wants to suggest -.-) as it is a Story centering the clash of realism and poetic realism / theory and action / cynicism and optimistic believe etc. It is a story that tackles different worldviews and ethical understandings. It is quite complex indeed.

______________________Summery_______________________

The year is 2013, in the city of No. 6 - the city that embodies the
highest ideals of humankind. Shion has been raised here as a
high-ranking elite since the age of two, but on the night of his twelfth
birthday, his fate is turned upside-down when he meets a boy who calls
himself Nezumi. Why did I open the window that night? I would never
have needed to know what it was like to fight, starve, or suffer in
anguish....
It is 2017. After being chased from No. 6, sixteen-year-old Shion sees the outside world, and its reality, for the first time. What was it that I thought I knew? What have I been seeing all this time?
Shion strives to live through every day he spends with Nezumi, but he
is confronted with a fateful question― "Me, or No. 6 - which one do you
choose?" Fate accelerates, and bears down upon the two.

Latest Updates

  • Important last update!

So you probably will have noticed the inconsistency in updates concerning this audiobook. We had a lot of trouble especially with the new recording room but we are glad to announce that the problems are all sorted out and we can finally seriously pick up this project again. We are very sorry for the delay but all voice actors should be chosen and all questions should be answered by this time tomorrow or the day after. Thank you very much for your continued interest and submissions. We hope you have a great day :).
  • Deadline pushed back yet again

First of all we would like to thank you all for your continued interest in this project and we are sure that we'll finish up the script in the next week or so. The reason why we pushed back the deadline, is that our new studio facilities that we are kindly permitted to use are only available to us starting October. We will finish the casting and receiving of your voice acting before that of course but we just wanted you to know that this projects final cut won't finish until November 2017! We want to make this project great with the help and (hopefully) patience of all you voice actors. Again thank you very much and have a wonderful day :).
  • Deadline was pushed back to the 20th of May

We have already heard so many wonderful auditions and so we decided to extend the projects deadline and raise our expectations for some roles that still haven't come out quite right. Thank you so much for your patience and interest and we hope that we can start with the project as soon as possible. Have a wonderful week :).

Shion is a kind and gentle teen, but generally naive and idealistic person. He has an amazing IQ level, proven by his acceptance into the Special Course and ability to treat and stitch up the bullet wound in Nezumi's arm at age twelve. His most prominent trait being his inquisitiveness and his fascination of life by Nezumis side. He speaks evenly and calmly with the occasional hitch of excitement (please keep in mind that he is not a theatrical character like Nezumi!). Lastly, please read the cursive thought-lines as well as the marked lines.  Good Luck!

  • "I
can't believe it," I muttered to myself.

    "That
there are people who'll shoot at other people... unless... don't tell me that
someone from the hunting club shot you by mistake?"

  • "Is it
a useless thing to think about my parents?" answered Shion tensely.
"I know what kind of situation I'm in right now, and I know there's no way
to get in contact with my mother. But I'm free to think about her, at least.
That's not something for you to say anything about."

  • If arrogance is knowing nothing and never having tried to know, and if
my blissful life until now has been built upon this arrogance, then sure, I
don't mind throwing everything away. Falling off my pedestal would be the best
thing that could have happened to me.

    "Nezumi,"
    he said steadily.

    "I want
to know the truth. I want to know what's real, what's happening to this world
I'm living in. I want to see its true face."

Nezumi

Role assigned to: sword of swords

Outwardly, Nezumi is a rude, sarcastic, and irritable individual, especially when he feels as if he's being questioned. Every time Shion asks Nezumi about himself, Nezumi shortly tells him to stop being nosy. When speaking with others, he often takes on a condescending or mocking tone. Nezumi has a cruel streak when it comes to getting what he wants, however, no matter how much Nezumi denies it, he is capable of thoughtful gestures. Nezumi also has a tendency to be dramatic and theatrical, due to his love for classic literature. His room is filled with books that range from Shakespeare to Ecology and Scientific Journals.  For someone who has no formal education, Nezumi has a vast amount of knowledge, even though he is unorganized. In addition to being booksmart, Nezumi's instincts and survival skills are as sharp as his knife.
He is probably the most troublesome character you would have to voice but that also makes him all the more enticing and unique. You will have to switch between voice acting stiles and different emotions a lot. You will notice that he changes his mannerisms within seconds like in line three. Nezumis Role is for everyone who invites a good challenge. He also has a job as a female actor so his voice should be close to unisex or at least switchable. Good Luck!
(You don't have to read the sentences in brackets they are only included for a better understanding of the situation!)

  • "Not
just your hands. That brain of yours. You're only twelve, right? And you're
going into the Gifted Curriculum of the highest educational institution. You're
    super elite." This time,
there was no tinge of sarcasm. Nor any hint of awe. I silently put away the
    soiled gauze and instruments.

  • Nezumi's
voice suddenly dropped low and hoarse.

    'Round about the cauldron go.

    In the poisoned entrails throw.

    Toad, that under cold stone

    Days and nights has thirty-one

    Sweltered venom sleeping got,

Boil thou first i' the charmèd pot."    (Shion: What's that?)

    "Macbeth.
The scene where the three witches are brewing newt eyes, frog feet, and bat
wings in a cauldron, making their special soup. Charming, isn't it?"

  • Nezumi
    gave a short laugh.

    "Instead
of retaliating, you recited this pledge every morning, not meaning a single
word of it, and pretended it didn't bother you. Let me tell you something,
Shion words aren't things that you can toss around casually. You can't let
yourself be forced to say something, and just put up with it. But you don't
know that. So that's why I'm not going to trust you." Nezumi's
hand suddenly extended toward him. His palm touched Shion's cheek.

    "Did
    that hurt?" he asked gently.

    (Shion: Quite
    a bit.)

    "―I
don't have any grudge against you. And I don't hate you, either."

Role assigned to: winniethepoop

Safu is straightforward, she says what she feels like saying when she wants to. If someone wants to pick a fight, she doesn't hesitate to fight back.  Much like Shion at the start of the series, she seems to be (though to a lesser degree) unable to express herself in a sense that would be like 'normal' people. She is extremely blunt and matter of fact. She is also one of No. 6s smartest elites and was like Shion raised according to a strict curriculum.

Beyond that she is an affectionate girl that cares a lot for the one she loves.  Good Luck!

  • "If
you were really envious and resentful, you wouldn't be able to stand going out
to eat with me. But you, you're laughing, eating, making conversation, cracking
    jokes like it's nothing."

    "Shion,"
said Safu firmly. "My specialization is in cognitive functions, brain
activity and their relationship with hormones."

  • "Then
I'll say this in a literary context. Emotional security... so I'm talking about
hope, or dreams. You have those. That's why you don't feel the need to resent
me. Shion, what is it that you hope for?"

  • "I'm
doing this because I want to. I'm being selfish, I know. But I can't just sit
and wait for Shion in this state. I want to see him so badly. That's why I'm
going. That's all there is to it... I'm not a mother, Madam― I can't be strong
like you. I can't keep waiting out of faith. I don't want to regret anything.
If― if by some chance, he ends up never coming back... I'm going to be the one
to suffer for my whole life. I don't want that. I don't want to lose him."

Mr. Fura is a smart, wealthy and high ranking official who was caught and pressed for information by Shion and Nezumi while he visited Lost Town for a night. Mr. Fura is a sheltered 'petri-dish elite' (as Nezumi likes to refer to them) that has a problem with disobeying No. 6 to the extend of not questioning or imagining the city differently at all. Good Luck!

  • "Please,
stop the blood," Fura implored. "Stop the pain. Hurry!" The man
offered his palm. He thrust it out, with tears streaming down his face. "hurry,
just make the pain stop―please, quick―"

  • "At the
Municipal Hospital―" The man broke off, and swallowed hard. He wasn't
keeping Shion hanging on purpose―he was hesitating. He was hesitating whether
he could talk about something like this.

    "A few
months ago, there was a transfer of posts at the Municipal Hospital.
Doctors―all highest-ranking in work ethic and skill―a few of them, along with
some nurses, were transferred out. I don't know where they were transferred
    to."

Karan has a very warm and caring personality. She stays behind in No. 6 even though she disapproves and is suspicious of it. She stays in order to provide a home for Shion to come back to if he ever has a chance to. Karan seems to have a strong sense of responsibility and maternal instinct, whilst being very emotional and determined. Lastly, please read the cursive as well as the indicated lines - Good Luck!

  • If I follow it, will it lead me to Shion?

    It was a
fleeting thought. She waved it away, and took a step forward.

I'll wait here, until my child comes back to me. I'll stay here, and
I'll wait. It's an easy thing to do. He's alive, and he's in the West Block. If
he's alive, I can wait. Hope hasn't been cut off from me. I haven't lost yet.

I haven't lost? Who am I fighting with, anyway?

    Karan smiled
slightly to herself, lifted her face, and strode out of the storage room.

  • ...would weep
no more. Despair no more. I'll bake bread every day, sell it, manage my
money, clean my shop, put out some flowers, and go on living. I'm going to do
    my job.

    "Starting
tomorrow, I'll put out a few more kinds of muffins. I know, I'll make it a
    Kids' Special day."

Yamase was a Co-worker of Shions and the second victim that succumbed to a parasitic wasp. He is, much like Fura, a disposable Character so you're welcome to audition for other Characters on the side. Yamase is a kind, open and nervous person. His voice is mostly tense or excited. Good Luck!

  • "Shion!"
Yamase warned, knitting his brow and shaking his head violently. "Don't
say stuff like that out loud. We've been hired by the City. We've pledged
allegiance. We shouldn't be talking about our suspicions. I don't know what's
gotten into me. Forget everything I said. Just forget it."

  • "No,
no... it's like they feel stiff..." He stood up unsteadily, and then
suddenly crumpled to the floor, his face in his hands.

    "My
    eyes... I can't see... they're blurry..."

    "Shion...
    what's―what's happening to me...?"

  • "Shion,
I don't want to be alone. Why did you have to get saved?"

    "Come
with me," he pleaded. "You will, won't you?"

    "We'll

Lili, Rico and Karan are three small children with minor Roles. Rico and Karan live along side their other sibling and mother in the West Block an suffer from hunger and harsh living conditions due to poverty. Karan is already smart enough to grasp many things concerning their suvival and always looks out for her family. Lili on the other hand lives inside No. 6 and is a cheerful loving girl that visits Karans (Shions mothers) bakery multiple times in a week. If you think you absulutly cannot speak a male or female character you can just audition for Rico or Karan and Lili seperatly. Good Luck!

  • "Mama
and Papa were both worried," Lili said. "They were saying, 'what if
we can't eat the bread or cakes from your bakery again?'. Because you know, the
cake shop in front of the station is bad-tasting, and expensive, and
    mean," she said huffily.

  • "Ummmm―"
Rico paused for a moment of thought. "Oh, a story about bread. And― and
one about soup and fried sweet potatoes."

  • Karan stood
    up.

    "No,
thank you. It's okay. We have to go home now." She took her little brother
by the hand and made for the door. She stopped, turned, and spoke in a small
voice. "Thank you for reading to us."

Yoming lost his wife and child when they were taken away by No.6 officials and labelled as 'missing', but he has his suspicions about No.6 and has since been investigating it. He found out about the horrors of correctional facilities and the problem with the wasps growing inside of people.
He is caring and shows concern for Karan as he consoles her when Shion goes missing. He is passionate about his cause which is to expose No.6 for what it really is. He comes by Karans bakery multiple times and often brings his niece Lili. He has an even voice with occasional twinges of sarcassm or worry mixed in. Good Luck!

  • "Karan,
I love you. I'm really, seriously, in love with you." The crow on the
man's shoulder cawed shrilly, as if to mock them. The man cleared his throat
awkwardly, and bowed his head to the elderly lady, who was staring at them with
    her mouth gaping open.

    "I'm
very sorry for having to show you such an ugly scene."

  • "Exactly.
An announcement by the authorities. The mayor's speech on his administrative
policy, word-for-word." The man twitched his moustache in a cynical smile.
"No one questions it. Everyone accepts what the city announces as it is,
and agrees to it without a thought. God, everyone in this damn city is so
obedient and naive. Doubting their superiors is the last thing on their minds.
They probably can't even imagine doing that, or want to. Having suspicions
takes energy. It's easier just to sit back and say, yes yes, I agree, to
    everything."

  • "That's
the one," the man affirmed. "Lovable Lili. She's my younger sister's
daughter. Says she likes your cheese muffins a hundred times more than ol'

Inukashi is an independent person who views humans as despicable. Inukashi is quick tempered and speaks their mind very bluntly. They have a rash way of speaking and Rikiga considers them a brat. Inukashi is very cocky and self aware, but has a kinder side. Inukashi loves their dogs and constantly speaks about how they're better and kinder than humans. They think that Shion is a huge oddball -- not only because of his looks but also because of his personality and naivety -- however they still offer him a job. As the series goes on, Inukashi finds themself wondering if they'd gotten too attached. It is implied that Inukashi is younger than Shion and Nezumi, but they seem to dabble in more dangerous things than they do in order to provide for their dogs and themself. They earn their money by running a Hotel and collecting dangerous information.

  • "Hey,
stop slacking off," Inukashi's voice called over to him. "There are
still tons of dogs left. Space out every other minute like that, and the sun's
gonna set before you're even halfway through."

  • "Hey Shion, feel like working? It's a dog-washing job. I need some help. If you wanna do it, follow this guy. As long as he's with you, the Disposers won't do anything funny. See ya. Oh PS: this guy said you're made for dog-washing."

Rikiga is a realitively enthusiastic man despite living in the Westblock . Rikiga is first introduced when Karan instructs Shion to visit him after finding out about her son's wherabouts. Rikiga offers to take care of Shion, but angers him after offering Nezumi a job as a prostitute and the two leave. Later on, he becomes familiar with Shion and comes to care for him, eventually helping him to break into No. 6.
During his younger years he was a journalist investigating No. 6 but nowadays he mainly works as a pimp and smut magazine publisher. He is an important, influencial and loyal ally to Shion who always tries his best for his sake eventhough he has a heavy alcohol problem. There are no specific instructions on this one, just read him according to your individual interpretation. Good Luck!

  • "I've
mentioned this before, Eve. I think I've had misconceptions about you. I

    (Nezumi: I
    thought you were my fan?)

    "You
can count me out from now on. Good god, I don't know what you enjoy so much
    about taunting adults like this."

  • "Shion―

    minute? I'll get you a drink― ah, I mean, a non-alcoholic one, of course...
what would you like? I have everything. Oh yes, here― let's move somewhere more
    comfortable where we can talk."

  • "It's
