Kitchen Princess: Manga Fan Dub Project, vol 1-3 (Summer 2021)
Project Overview
Introduction
Hello and thanks for your interest in this fan dub project for the beloved shojo classic, Kitchen Princess! This series was never given an animated adaptation, so this particular project will focus on bringing the pages of the manga to life instead! I am only planning to record the first 3 volumes / chapters 1-15 for now. From there, we will see how reception for the project goes. If all goes well, I will highly consider finishing the rest of the series (10 volumes total).
Quick background on the story: Kitchen Princess follows Najika Kazami, a bubbly and ambitious, aspiring pastry chef from Japan's Hokkaido countryside, as she begins her high school days at the elite Seika Academy in Tokyo. In addition to chasing her dream of becoming a renowned pastry chef, Najika arrives at Seika Academy in search of her "Flan Prince" — a mysterious boy who saved Najika from drowning when she was a child. The boy left behind a spoon, indented with the school's crest, and the most delicious flan for Najika, who vowed she would find her prince again some day and make him the most delicious dessert in the world. Upon entering Seika Academy, Najika quickly meets and befriends two young men who may very well be the prince she has been looking for! Could it be the aloof yet headstrong Daichi Kitazawa, or his kinder and more charming older brother Sora Kitazawa? This is where the adventure begins for our Kitchen Princess!
Requirements:- 18+ only please; not because this series has adult themes, but for me as the project director to ensure a level of professionalism and maturity that this project needs. Thank you for your understanding.
- Commitment is key! I intend the final product to be something of quality. If cast, I expect that recordings will be submitted in a timely and professional manner in order to stay on-schedule with the final project release.
- Professional acting experience is not a requirement, but it's highly preferred actors have a significant level of performance experience to truly bring these characters to life.
- Clear and stable microphone please
- At least some cultural background and understanding of Japanese honorifics and pronunciations
Payment:This is a non-paid, completely fan-powered project and there are no plans to monetize this project in any way. If cast, you understand that you will not be compensated for your voice work (as much as I would very much want to, because your work is so appreciated!!) - I do appreciate your understanding about this in advance!

Some final notes:- You are welcome to audition for as many characters as you would like! Please also consider auditioning for background/extras as well. This series has a LOT of them, and we'll definitely need all the voice talent we can get!
- DO NOT SLATE YOUR AUDITION. Just go straight into reading the lines provided.
- I will try to give feedback to folks as I receive auditions, but most likely you will only hear back from me for callback auditions or if I need to follow up with you for any reason. Please understand. Thank you!
- I recommend folks read through a bit of the manga to get a better understanding of the stories and characters/prep for your audition. The entire series is available to read on MangaKakalot if folks want to check it out there (head's up: as all third party manga sites do, MK does contain occasional NSFW advertisements that may be uncomfortable for some folks—just so you are aware).
- Discord will be our main platform for group meetings, rehearsals, and to share announcements and updates. If you are cast, make sure you have Discord downloaded.

Just a reminder that the auditions deadline is 10 days away! There are still plenty of open roles (especially for background characters) so please continue sending in auditions! There are also a few characters that I believe I'm ready to make a final casting decision on, so note that there will be some roles closing up before the deadline. For those who are cast, keep an eye out for further updates from me in your CCC inbox. Thanks again for the support and interest in this project!
Najika is a very cheery and kind protagonist. Actor should be able to convey this upbeat and sincere attitude. She's someone who anyone could be friends with. High to medium-high vocal range for a 15 year old girl.
(Gentle, yet passionate and hopeful) "My prince left me a silver spoon and disappeared. I will find him and make him the most delicious dessert in the world. That is my dream."
(Shocked, frightened) "Ahh!! Look away!!"
(Nervous) "Well, it seems my rollercoaster school life has finally begun."
Sora is the sophisticated and popular love interest for our main character, Najika. The actor portraying Sora should convey a kind and mature demeanor. People find value in Sora's words, and he is able to be stern when necessary. Medium to medium-low vocal range for a 16-17 year old boy.
(Gentle, almost seductive) "You have such a cute smile...Welcome to Seika Academy."
(Nostalgic, even a bit sad) "We used to come here all the time—their jelly dessert was the best. But students don't really come by anymore."
(Slightly annoyed, but trying to keep composure) "You're such a kid. Why are you even here?"
Daichi is the younger brother of Sora, and the other potential love interest for Najika. He's a bit rough around the edges and isn't afraid to speak his mind against his older brother, whom he isn't very fond of. But deep down, he cares about the people close to him and is a reliable friend. Medium to medium-high vocal range for a 16-17 year old boy.
(Annoyed) "It's only a flan...it's not like I'm going to die if I don't eat it."
(Urgent and concerned, but trying to maintain his tough boy image) "Wait, Najika! Why didn't you come back to the diner? Please...you can't run away."
(Dying of laughter) "You can't be serious, that's hilarious! You're really just a monkey after all, huh?"
Akane is childhood friends with Daichi and Sora, and is particularly interested in Daichi. On the surface she seems kind and very popular, but she actually is easily angered and has envious tendencies. She can can shift quickly from "best friend" to "spoiled bitch," and the vocal range should reflect this. Medium-high vocal range for a 16 year old girl.
(Starts out friendly and sweet) "No problem at all! Friends should help each other out..." (Pause for a few seconds, then switch to a condescending tone) "...what an idiot."
(Angry/upset) "Why? Why do you care about a girl like her, when I've always been here! Since, we were kids!"
(Remorseful) "I never wanted to admit it. But I'm sorry...I'm so sorry."
Mr. Fujita runs the Fujita Diner restaurant on the school's campus where Najika eventually works at. He appears lazy and not fond of his job (or young people), but he's actually a skilled chef and a kind soul if you treat him nicely. Low to medium vocal range for a ~30 year old male.
(Uninterested; trying to wrap the conversation up quickly so he can go back to his nap) "A job? Well you can't get one without the director's approval so I can't help you there. Come back later once you get approval."
(Encouraging) "Well what do you know, this actually tastes pretty good. You've got a gift."
(Calm) "Oh, that guy? He comes in here all the time. Never orders anything though."
Hagio-sensei is the old woman who runs the orphanage the Najika grew up in. She is like a second mother to Najika. Sweet, gentle, and seems a bit frail physically but has a strong heart.
(Reminiscing) "It seems like it was only yesterday you came to the orphanage. You never spoke. You wouldn't eat. I was so worried about you."
There are various orphan kids who make appearances throughout the story. These are kids that Najika grew up with/grew up taking care of. They are just like siblings to her.
(Young female; amazed/curious) "Whoa, you guessed all of the recipes correctly big sis!"
(Young female; sad) "Don't forget about us! We're going to miss you so much!"
(Young male; poking fun) "Heh. Well she does have a stomach the size of a cow."
A friendly classmate of Daichi's who tries to give him flan she made in cooking class, but is rejected. High to medium-high vocal range.
(Cheery) "There you are! Were you skipping class again, Daichi? We made flan today!"
One of Akane's friends. Appears from time to time throughout the series but isn't named. The kind of friend with "sheep mentality" and believes anything Akane says. High to medium vocal range.
(Curious) "So what's your special talent? You must be good at something to be in the special class."
(Angry/upset) "What's wrong with you?? I bet you did that on purpose because you were jealous of her lunch."
One of Akane's friends. Appears from time to time throughout the series but isn't named. The kind of friend with "sheep mentality" and believes anything Akane says. High to medium vocal range.
(Annoyed) "Hmpf. I thought she would be 'all that' to get a recommendation from the director, but she's nothing but a pig."
(Proud) "You haven't heard of her? She's super famous! All the girls here want to be just like her!"
(Shocked, in disbelief) "Special Class A??? How did she get in there???"
(Bragging, snobby) "I won the Ministry of Education Award for my oil paintings."
Various male & female teachers/staff that appear throughout the series. No particular vocal range.
(Stern) "Orientation is at noon. Don't be late. Until then you can wait here in the dormitories."
(Surprised) "These are delicious! Where can we find the chef?"
(Welcoming) "Please welcome our newest student, Najika Kazami. It's a pleasure to have you join us."
