Project Overview
Hello my name is Grant Newkirk, I am a writer and voice actor.
Recently I've had an idea kicking around in my head that I would like to make into a pitch that I can show to different production companies. I was hoping to eventually take this idea to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, or other similar companies. I would love to have something to get my foot in the door. That's where this pitch video would come in.
I have written 10 episodes for this series, all of which were planned to be 25 minutes long.
This pitch, on the other hand, would be around 3 minutes long. It's just a quick series of scenes that establish characters using short cuts of their dialogue from early episodes. Each character would be introduced, given a character card, and then the scene would move on.
So what's the series about?
Henry, a 20-something nobody, decides he's done living. He downs a bottle of pills and mixes it with some hard liquor. After passing out he's found by his parents and rushed to the hospital where he gets his stomach pumped. When he wakes up, he's being prepped to enter an inpatient ward; The kind of ward that houses suicidal and troublesome patients. From there he meets a cast of characters that each have their own pasts that they're dealing with. Can the doctors really cure a suicidal patient? How long will Henry be trapped in this ward? What led him to this point in his life? Tune in and find out.
The show would delve into some darker subject matter like sexual assault, suicide, and murder. It's a drama but occasionally has dark humor thrown in to help alleviate the dour mood.
Episode 0 would just be a trailer for the actual series; Something I can show to different studios.
That's cool and all, but what do you need from us?
I'm currently looking for an animator (and background artist) as well as several voice actors to help me make this dream a reality. I would happily settle for 12 frames a second for this 3 minute short. I also need voice actors to voice the characters. Since the bulk of this project will be animating it, the budget will reflect this. Most characters only have a line or two except Henry who has a few more.
Requirements for the animator:
- Must be 18+
- Must have a Paypal account, since that's how I'm paying people.
- Punctual, able to meet deadlines, driven, and friendly (if possible).
- Able to produce a 3 minute short at 12 frames a second (or 24 if you really want to torture yourself) using the given audio and storyboards I have drafted. Delivery of this product will be in 1920x1080 resolution in an .mp4 format.
- Bring your own style to the table.
- Able to stay in contact through Discord.
- We will discuss pay before the project has started.
- You may apply with a portfolio or demo reel.
Requirements for the background artist:
- Must be 18+
- Must have a Paypal account, since that's how I'm paying people.
- Punctual, able to meet deadlines, driven, etc.
- Able to draw and color (muted and dull colors preferred) a dozen or so backgrounds and a few different closeup shots. These will be 1920x1080 resolution backgrounds.
- Bring your own style to the table.
- Able to stay in contact through Discord.
- We will discuss pay before the project has started.
- You may apply with a portfolio or demo reel. (Bonus points for drawing a few backgrounds of the ward with the examples given)
Requirements for the voice actors:
- Must be 18+
- Must have a Paypal account, since that's how I'm paying people.
- Punctual, able to meet deadlines, etc.
- A good microphone. XLR microphones will be given preference, but don't worry if you only have a USB microphone. Feel free to try out! As well as a good quality microphone I ask that your audition have no background noise and no plosives popping the microphone. I'd also ask that there's no peaking in your audio. If you really want to impress me, say "Inpatient" at the end of your audition to prove that you've read this.
- Able to produce your lines in a lossless format such as .wav and in a timely manner.
- Able to stay in contact through Discord.
- Payment is fixed for each role in Episode 0.
- NOTE: Not all lines from the audition are present in Episode 0. Some exerts are taken out of context from episodes down the line.

Finalized Roles - Thank You!
Thank you all for applying! I am grateful for how interested the community has been with my project, and appreciate everyone who submitted an audition. The final rounds have been made and let it be known that there were plenty of talented people who threw their hat into the ring. It was hard to decide on talent as there were so many great auditions! First Rounds of Casting and Extended Deadline
Hello again everyone, I just wanted to say that I'm happy there has been such a turnout for this project! The first wave of castings is almost finished and after it's done the only roles left will be for an animator and a background artist. Since I hadn't posted a concrete payment for either of those roles at the beginning, I feel like not as many people applied. As such I have decided to push the deadline back another week so more people can apply for the Animator and Background Artist roles. I wanted to thank everyone for applying and being as patient as they are! With voice talent cast we will be able to get recordings finished in short order, then we can move onto principal animation. Must be able to animate this 3 minute short in a timely manner; Will be compensated for your time and effort. Looking for any and all types of animation, as there isn't one set in stone quite yet. Feel free to show me what you got and put your own personal spin on the characters.

Being the only animator (unless the work load is too much in which case I might hire a cleanup animator) means you will be responsible for creating these characters and their visual flares (character descriptions are shown in each role description). That said they're all clad in medical scrubs so you won't have to worry about their clothes (with a few exceptions like Henry at the beginning when he's at home). I will be hiring a background artist so don't worry about backgrounds quite yet.

Must be familiar with drawing humans. Cartoonish or realistic.

All characters inside the inpatient ward (including nurses), unless stated otherwise, will be clad in medical scrubs. The ward depicted in this series has both older and younger people housed in it. Also, patients aren't given access to makeup because they live inside the ward. That is, until they have been treated for whatever got them sent there. The gist is that everyone will be wearing scrubs in the ward and will look "natural" without any hair-care products or makeup (meaning no hair ties either).
The show is written as a drama so keep that in mind.

In need of a background artist to make backgrounds for the animator to animate on. The series takes place in an inpatient ward, a hospital ward where they stick people who are suicidal or troublesome. Backgrounds will almost entirely consist of different rooms in the inpatient ward: An art room, a general living area, two different levels (a 1st level for new patients and a 2nd level once they prove they're docile), a shower room, etc.
You may apply with a portfolio or demo reel.
All rooms will need to look sterile with no sharp objects or long objects laying around. They don't want patients to hurt themselves, after all. It's just like any other hospital sans anything sharp.
I may ask for closeups and various different angles of the backgrounds provided. I don't want the show to look stale or repetitive but I'm willing to be economical with what is sent to me.
I will sketch out a general floor layout for both "levels" of the ward to help you visualize how it's all laid out.
Must be able to communicate and follow instructions.

The newest inductee into the inpatient ward, Henry is an average 20-something nobody with no real ambitions in life.
He's tired with life but puts on a brave face. He's cynical, lithe, and young looking. But above all else he's a vulnerable man who's in over his head.
He should sound mid to low pitched. He's just another 20-something, after all. As average as they come.
Characteristics:

I wanted to die. I shouldn't be here. I was supposed to just drift off in my sleep. I wasn't supposed to wake up, but they found me and dragged me here.(Talking about how he ended up in inpatient.)
Henry:
It’s complicated... It’s not that easy. I already looked for help, I saw therapists, I tried meds but nothing really worked. Part of it is my fault, sure, I should have been more honest... but part of me just didn’t want to bother with any of it.

Slim is a Hispanic late-teen who has found himself in inpatient along with Henry and a few others.
He plays a major supporting role throughout the series but for this episode he only shows up twice. He's got a slim build and chews on his lips a lot. All things considered he's one of the more "normal" patients in the ward. He's fairly gay as well, given that he flirts with Henry on Henry's first day (though we don't get to see that in this episode), that said he's a bit feminine but still clearly boyish. Much like the other patients in the ward, this isn't Slim's first time at inpatient.
Slim should sound mid to high pitched.

As long as it’s not sharp, metal, or dangerous, visitors can bring you things. They usually just let people bring you treats or snacks but you can also get paper and pencils. I mean, as long as the pencils are stubby and can’t be used to STAB people.

It's unclear how she ended up here and probably won't be explained in the near future. She's spiteful and knows quite a lot about the world already, having had a traumatic past with her family. She despises men on principle but gives Slim a pass since Slim is gay. Despite her years it's clear she's been through a lot.
She should sound mid to high pitched.

Yesterday is tired. She's always tired. Life is a drag for poor old Yesterday. Her voice reflects her exhaustion, being a slow, low drawl that occasionally snags on some words.
She's one of the older patients in the ward, probably middling around Henry's age as a 20-something. She has long, frizzy hair that covers most of her face most of the time. Yesterday is also Hispanic.
Yesterday should sound mid to low pitched and mumble her words. She also occasionally hangs on words as shown below. ("onnnly" "mmme" and "wwwant" in this case.)
