Hypnotica - Indie Video Game - Visual Novel

Project Overview

This is an idea that I'm currently working on. I have plans for most characters, but some of them still need to be drawn out. This will be a visual novel based game, with some decision-making and gameplay involved to make it a choose your own adventure game. It's inspired by games like Danganronpa, Venus: Improbable Dream, Child of Light, Layers of Fear, and other story-based horror/mystery games. I'll put references for each character (who inspired the character, the vision I have for them), but I'm open to suggestions or other types of voices you have in mind for the character. You can use my descriptions as a reference, but feel free to play around with the voices and delivery as much as you'd like, I love hearing other creative perspectives and ideas.

All drawings of characters are rough drafts and concept art, so if the character design changes as the project progresses don't be surprised haha. I'm working on finalizing the character designs now, but that will be more certain the sooner I finalize the whole story. (I haven't put a lot about the story because parts of it are subject to change)

Mild cussing, so make sure that's something you're comfortable with. This doesn't include slurs or prejudice of any kind.

- please read the descriptions I give for the characters. They're long and detailed for a reason, I try to label every important element that I want to be present in the voice to make it easier for the actor. I might contact you and ask you to re-record lines with different direction or emotion. This doesn't mean I think your first audition was bad. It just means I think it could improve, usually in order to better fit the character.

Please don't get offended if I ask you to re-do something. Voice acting is just like that. It doesn't mean you're bad at it if I ask you to redo it.

Don't stress too much about it, this is just something I'm working on in my spare time. I just want to have something I can work on to keep me productive. I would love for it to turn into a profitable project eventually, but mostly I just want to have fun with it. This will be a slow moving, low pressure project. If you're just getting into voice acting, this is probably a good start. It's a casual project with no for sure deadline, so it shouldn't be too stressful :)

  • Project Status Update !!!

    Hey! Just wanted to give a quick update to everyone following this project. I didn't expect so many good auditions to come in so quickly, and the project is moving at a slower pace than I originally thought. I'm moving the deadline to the end of December, so if you know anyone who would want to audition or if you're interested in doing resubmissions feel free to submit those or contact me with any questions you might have. If you want a direct analysis of your audition with some feedback, you can also contact me and I'm always happy to provide that (you're also free to submit a second audition after given feedback, since being responsive to direction and criticism is important in this project.)   • NEW ROLES (LEAD AND SUPPORT)

    I just updated and added new roles, including the lead character, Aiko Sadako. She's not finalized yet, but I wanted to go ahead and post her so I could have a clearer image in my head of her character. There's a new open role for Daisuke Hayashi, who will be important in the story as a supporting role. I also added a section for anyone to show off voices they're most confident in, since I have more characters I haven't finished yet and I might find a role that better fits your vocal style and/or comfort zone. This isn't necessarily video editing, but more so putting together and developing the visual novel. I'm not great with the Ren.py software, but I will provide all the files for scripts, character sprites, design choices, BGM, character voices, etc. I just need someone who can put them all together using the software and help me finalize it. If you're familiar with the software or have created visual novels in the past, help would be greatly appreciated. This is unpaid for now but there are extremely flexible deadlines and absolutely no pressure on the project, so if you're looking for a casual side project--or know anyone who is--I could use your help. Honestly, I keep changing my mind about this character haha. She's the lead role and the focal point of the story, so I want to get her character perfect. Just know in advance that information, design, and possibly slight personality changes may occur in this character throughout the audition process. The deadline is far away, but I want to post her early on so that I can hear a variety of voices for her character that might help me solidify her design and personality--especially since she's not technically complete and finalized yet like the others.

She is a nice person, but she struggles with underlying insecurities. It doesn't stop her from socializing, but she does second guess herself sometimes. She has trouble being confident in her decisions, but being friends with Daisuke helps. She is also friends with Miyuna and Akari, but isn't necessarily close with Zaiaku at the beginning of the story. She isn't necessarily popular, but she doesn't have problems being social and definitely isn't shy. She has her small group of friends and she's content with that. I don't have an exact preference for her voice, but those characteristics should be present. If you have any questions or want critiques, feel free to contact me. With this role I will likely ask for resubmissions given slightly different direction that I think would better fit the character. Being adaptable and responsive to direction is very important to me, so I might ask you to change some things and resubmit.

This one is arguably the most difficult role, since his personality fluctuates a lot, so I put him first. 

He's 17 years old with dark hair and hemangioma over his left cheek, stopping just below his left eye. He has CF (a terminal illness that affects the lungs) from less than ideal conditions where he grew up. This being said, he has a sort of nonchalant outlook on life. His life expectancy is only about 35, so he treats life as if it has little meaning. He's very impulsive and blunt, often doing reckless things and unable to maintain many strong relationships (with the exception of Miyuna.) He and Miyuna are cousins and have been close their entire lives. She's one of the only people he willingly goes out of his way to interact with, and the only person he thinks genuinely values his life.

He has OSDD, a type of personality disorder, so he has multiple personas he takes on. He occasionally experiences gaps in memory, but mostly just extreme changes in mood or behavior depending on the situation. They become more extreme and noticeable as the story progresses, so the VA should be able to make the emotional changes without fully changing the character's voice. His most major changes are between the following emotions:

- stern and intimidating, often cold and sarcastic

- laid-back and straightforward, making blunt statements and often not taking things too seriously. This is his main persona.

- Extreme paranoia, often experiencing hallucinations or flashbacks. This one is rare, but should still be something you're comfortable with.

- Distant and dissociative, often with short term memory loss. This one is sort of present in the others as well, but at times it's more extreme than others, so I gave it it's own bullet point.

Characters that inspired him are Dazai Osamu from Bungo Stray Dogs, Nagito Komaeda from Danganronpa 2, and JD from Heathers. You can also use these as vocal references, as they all have similar, mentally deranged fluctuations in both tone and personality.

  • (laid-back, somewhat cheerful and innocent tone) - Sorry, you're out of luck. I don't really do the whole backstory thing, haha. You can stick around if you want, but it really makes no difference to me. I just want to eat my lunch in peace, so try not to make too much noise. You'll ruin my mood.

  • (somewhat paranoid, but attempting to keep his composure) - Hey... D-Did you hear that? *pause* Nevermind... *half-hearted laugh* I'm probably just imagining things. I-It's fine. I just...*trails off* N-Nevermind.

She's mostly an ordinary high school girl, but she is known to be very quiet and often unsure of herself. She is comfortable around close friends, but gets anxious and self conscious in unfamiliar places or social situations. She usually isolates in her room, but often goes on late night walks or occasionally meets up with close friends. Her voice should be somewhat unsure with an occasional stutter, often self-conscious and only speaking to new people when it's necessary. She is comfortable around a few close friends, like Zaiaku and Akari, but has trouble speaking to mostly everyone else. She isn't close with her parents, but they don't have a negative relationship. Her and Zaiaku are cousins and have been close their whole lives. She knows him very well and is one of the only people he willingly goes out of his way to interact with.

A good vocal reference for her could be Toko Fukawa from Danganronpa (not Genocide Jack). She has a similar stutter and anxious personality, but not all the time. She's not entirely anti-social, she just struggles to make connections.

She is a close friend to Miyuna, but she's not necessarily close to Zaiaku. She is supportive, positive, and often sarcastic to make light of dark situations. She is very passionate about video games, and is a small streamer on twitch. She is a social person, but not necessarily popular. Her voice is mid-ranged and optimistic. However, she can get competitive at times.

Goes by Suke for short. He is very upbeat and positive, somewhat cocky but not so much so that it's overly obnoxious. He plays the trumpet in band and is very confident in his skills. He is very sociable and known for being easy to talk to. He tries to befriend Zaiaku (who he calls Z) many times, despite Zaiaku's antisocial nature. Good vocal references for him could include Mirio Togata from MHA (dub) or Kaito Momota from Danganronpa, although I don't imagine him to have a gruff voice.

She's an antagonist in the story and is somewhat of a bully. However, she is heavily influenced by peer pressure and deep down isn't a bad person. She is known to be rude to her classmates, but can also be manipulative (able to stay out of trouble by deceiving others into believing she is the victim.) She feels the need to put others down in order to make herself feel superior to them.

Her voice should be somewhat bitter and jealous, over-exaggerating a lot and getting upset when she is upstaged or overshadowed. I imagine her to have a mid-ranged voice, but I'm open to whatever is most comfortable for you (as long as it fits the character.) She should also be able to put on fake voices in order to manipulate others (friendly, sad, offended, etc.) Emphasis and articulation on insults is probably the best way to deliver her lines, conveying anger without necessarily yelling every time.

  • (bitterly) - Well if you refuse to talk to me, then maybe I'll just go to your little friends instead. I'm curious to see how they'll react when they learn the truth about you. You're nothing but a lying little attention whore with a compulsive need to take advantage of others. I mean honestly, how long do you think those "friends" of yours will stick around? People like you always end up alone, and you deserve to be.

This is a role I created to let anyone who's interested demonstrate a voice they are comfortable with or proud of. Since I'm still developing characters, I would love to find more voice actors who might fit characters I haven't finalized yet (or inspire more characters for me to develop.) Some of the other roles are tough and I know that everyone has different comfort zones and voices that they are good at.
