"How The Grinch Stole Christmas" inspired 2-Song Original Mini-Musical

Project Overview

Hi, I'm Kate! I'm looking for a narrator and two singer/voice-actors who are capable of learning original music (with or without guidance, I am willing to be very flexible based on your needs/experience) via sheet music and/or instructional vocal tracks. This is a very low-key project that will be uploaded on YouTube in early to mid December.

If you want you can check out some of my other original work on my YouTube Channel to get a feel for the kind of music you'll be learning. -> Kate's Channel!

Each singing role will be assigned one (1) solo each and will be paid $50 each upon the successful delivery of audio. The Narrator will be given a fair amount of lines to read and will also be paid $50 upon the successful delivery of audio.(Paypal or Zelle only)

Auditions will close November 11th and tracks will be due no later than November 30th, however earlier delivery, if possible, is preferred. Singers: Sheet music, vocal guides, and instrumental tracks will be given immediately upon confirmation of casting (potentially earlier than the 11th). If you will not be able to learn and record a 3-4 minute solo in that amount of time, please do not audition. Additionally, if you require one-on-one help or instruction to learn your piece, I am more than willing to schedule time with you to do that.

Credit and links to social media will be given to the casted actors' specifications in the description of the video and potentially the video title as well (pending length of title).

Communication and delivery of learning materials will be done through Discord, exclusively, save for the delivery of your vocal tracks, which will preferably be through email. Additionally I am very open to reaching out for future roles, so connection on Discord will help keep us in touch!

Recording Specifications:

  • Whatever mic you like to use is perfectly acceptable, provided it delivers clean audio. Personally, I use a Rode-NT1A when I record vocals, which provides my preferred standard of sound. Please don't noise remove, pitch-correct, or add effects to your audio (this includes your audition audio as well). I also like to have three (3) to five (5) takes of everything, including singing, to ensure best possible final product and allow for double tracking.

  • Singers: You are welcome to take liberties with the music, within reason. If you're a gifted riff-er and want to show off your chops I'm totally into it, just please provide me with recordings of any changes before incorporating it into your final recording. Please also remember that text and song meaning come before flourishes - try to reserve adding frills or opting up/down to where it still makes sense musically and doesn't distract from the context.

  • Audio files must be delivered in .wav format via email in order to receive compensation. MP3 files are not acceptable. Takes should be delivered in separate files and, preferably, ordered from first to last in terms of your personal favorite or "best" take to your least favorite take. This order will be taken into account during the mixing process.

  • In the unlikely event that your final recordings are not where they should be, you will receive half the payment upon their delivery and the other half once satisfactory recordings are received. I will do all I can to ensure you know exactly what I'm expecting from you in your final recording and I will be flexible with you in terms of re-recording. I know your time is very valuable, I know this project is small, and I know that sometimes things get miscommunicated. However, in this situation, I reserve the right to withhold the second half of payment if an actor is unwilling to re-record.

Latest Updates

  • Auditions Closed!

Thank you so so much to everyone who auditioned! I am still so shocked that so many of you auditioned. You all did great. Auditions are now closed. If you want to audition still, I will allow some people to do so privately on a case by case basis, until I’ve made my final casting decisions. Message me privately and we can discuss. To those of you who auditioned already, I will have everything cast by Thursday, November 11th, 8pm EST. Upon being cast on CCC, we will need to connect via Discord (or email, if you do not have Discord). After we confirm one-on-one and go over deadlines, you will receive all materials associated with your part. Thank you all again for your enthusiasm! Kate
  • Deadline Moving Up!

Hi all! I have to say I am so excited to have received the number of submissions I have! I honestly was not expecting so many talented individuals to audition for this little project. That being said, I have a lot of really good contenders- and I know it will be difficult to make a decision. SINGERS: I will be reaching out to a couple of you privately to see if you would be willing to learn a small piece of the solo belonging to the character you auditioned for. If you are unable to do this, it does not necessarily affect my decision on casting. As I've said, I have some really strong contenders- this is just to help me get a better feel for how you would perform this part. Piggy-backing off of that, I will likely begin casting earlier than the posted deadline. I will give a grace period of 48 hours from now for anyone following this project that wants to audition to get their submission in. On Monday, November 8th at 10 pm EST, I will begin making my final decisions. If you will not be able to submit an audition by that time, please contact me and we can talk about alternatives. Anyone looking to audition for the Narrator should submit as soon as possible as that is likely the role I will cast first. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and understanding! I look forward to potentially working with you :)

The Grinch

Paid: Flat Rate 50 USD
Role assigned to: Elliott Brotherhood

The Grinch is a character we are all very familiar with: grumpy, sarcastic, rough-around-the-edges, but, ultimately, a misunderstood villain. Because this project is so short, I really want to encourage actors to make this role their own. I am open to pretty much any interpretation. I would prefer not to have a Jim Carey impersonation contest, however if that is your best version of this role, go for it! Any inflections or accents you want (so long as you can still be understood and can sing through them healthily) are welcome.

I'm looking for a mature-ish sounding voice. Not old, but clearly adult. The thing I will be paying most attention to is consistency from your acting voice to singing voice- do they sound like the same person? That being said, you don't have to add inflections/accents/impressions if you don't want to.

Specifications of this role:

There will be a handful of lines setting up your solo, as well as two or three lines in between song sections. However, the solo will be the majority of your part. The solo for the Grinch is currently in the key of G minor, with the highest note coming in at a G4 (belting) and the lowest at a G3. I am willing to adjust the key if this is not a comfortable range.

  • "The nerve of those Whos, inviting me down there on such short notice! Even if I wanted to go, my schedule wouldn’t allow it. Four o’clock: wallow in self pity, four-thirty: stare into the abyss, five o’clock: solve world hunger- tell no one, five-thirty: jazzercise, six-thirty: dinner with me (I can’t cancel that again!), seven o’clock: wrestle with my self-loathing... I’m booked! Of course, if I bump the loathing to nine, I could still be done in time to lay in bed, stare at the ceiling and slip slowly into madness... But what would I wear!?"

  • An upbeat pop or contemporary theater song of your choosing that you feel you can perform well, preferably, with good comedic timing, and that is at least two (2) minutes long. Please do not sing any songs from or that are associated with and previous "Grinch" works (no "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" or "Where Are You Christmas?"). Auditions can have backing tracks or be acapella, however if you choose to go without a backing track please be mindful of your timing. Neither option is "preferred," however if you submit an acapella audition where you are not keeping time well it will be distract from your performance. There's absolutely no shame in needing a backing track, it's always in your best interests to play to your strengths.

If you need some ideas, any of these songs would be good choices:

"Tear Me Down" from Hedwig and the Angry Inch

"Youngblood" by 5 Seconds of Summer

"Problematic" by Bo Burnham (from Inside)

"A Miracle Would Happen" from The Last Five Years

    "30/90" from tick, tick... BOOM!

    "Shiny" from Moana

"The Pitiful Children" from Be More Chill

"This World Will Remember Me" from Bonnie and Clyde

    "Everybody Loves Me" by OneRepublic

Again this is a song of your choosing, so have fun and pick something that you feel good singing!

  • A vocal exercise or scale that demonstrates your range, primarily that you are comfortable singing between a G3 to a G4*. If you are unfamiliar with with any such exercises, you can do the one provided in the link below (links to YouTube), and record the exercise that begins at the one-minute mark. Note: You do not have to do the entire exercise. Please stop once it becomes too high to be comfortable.

*The range of this song is somewhat flexible, as I am willing to change the key for a singer that does a good job but can't fit that range.

Cindy Lou Who

Paid: Flat Rate 50 USD
Role assigned to: NikkiFournier

Like the Grinch, we are all very familiar with this character. Cindy Lou Who is the embodiment of coming-of-age and disillusionment with the holidays in the face of extravagant gift giving where she grew up being told camaraderie and quality-time should be. I do want actors to make this role their own, but I want it to sound unmistakably "Cindy Lou Who," so, please, nothing too extravagant in terms of accents or inflections. Subtlety is key here.

I'm looking for a youthful, but not baby-ish sound for this part. I will be paying the most attention to is consistency from your acting voice to singing voice- do they sound like the same person? I am open to a range of different "ages" in terms of how old you sound, so don't strain to sound like a toddler if you aren't comfortable with that.

Specifications of this role:

There will be a handful of lines setting up your solo, however, the solo will be the majority of your part. The solo for Cindy Lou Who is currently in the key of Eb minor, with the highest note coming in at a Db5 and the lowest at a B3. I am willing to adjust the key if this is not a comfortable range.

  • "Excuse me, Mr. Grinch my name is Cindy Lou Who. [A beat] I'm not scared. [Another beat] I don't think so... Maybe you need a time-out... Mr. Grinch, I came to invite you to be Holiday Cheer-Meister. I know you hate Christmas, but what if it's all just a misunderstanding? I myself am having some Yuletide doubts! But maybe if you reunite with the Whos and be a part of Christmas, then maybe it'll be all right for me, too! Please, please, you have to accept the award!"

  • A pop or contemporary theater ballad or mid-tempo piece of your choosing that you feel you can perform well and that is at least two (2) minutes long. If you need some ideas, any of these songs would be good choices:
"Times Are Hard For Dreamers" from Amelie
"Journey To The Past" from Anastasia
"Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid
    "Honey" by Kehlani
    "deja vu" by Olivia Rodrigo
    "White Horse" by Taylor Swift
"Second Hand White Baby Grand" from Bombshell (SMASH)
    "Kindergarten Boyfriend" from Heathers
    "Home" from Beetlejuice

Again this is a song of your choosing, so have fun and pick something that you feel good singing!

Paid: Flat Rate 50 USD
Role assigned to: Annamarie

The Narrator is a classic and essential element in the Grinch tale we know and love. Omniscient and only slightly biased, they provide the timeless commentary that made the original an instant classic. In this short adaptation, I am open to a male or female narrator. The only true qualifications are that you have a clear and distinct speaking voice that suits this type of reading.

  • "The Grinch hated Christmas- the whole Christmas season. Oh, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right. But I think that the most likely reason of all, may have been that his heart was two sizes too small...

  • "And what happened, then? Well, in Whoville they say that the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day. And then the true meaning of Christmas came through, and the Grinch found the strength of ten Grinches- plus two!"
