Like the Grinch, we are all very familiar with this character. Cindy Lou Who is the embodiment of coming-of-age and disillusionment with the holidays in the face of extravagant gift giving where she grew up being told camaraderie and quality-time should be. I do want actors to make this role their own, but I want it to sound unmistakably "Cindy Lou Who," so, please, nothing too extravagant in terms of accents or inflections. Subtlety is key here.

I'm looking for a youthful, but not baby-ish sound for this part. I will be paying the most attention to is consistency from your acting voice to singing voice- do they sound like the same person? I am open to a range of different "ages" in terms of how old you sound, so don't strain to sound like a toddler if you aren't comfortable with that.

Specifications of this role:

There will be a handful of lines setting up your solo, however, the solo will be the majority of your part. The solo for Cindy Lou Who is currently in the key of Eb minor, with the highest note coming in at a Db5 and the lowest at a B3. I am willing to adjust the key if this is not a comfortable range.

  • "Excuse me, Mr. Grinch my name is Cindy Lou Who. [A beat] I'm not scared. [Another beat] I don't think so... Maybe you need a time-out... Mr. Grinch, I came to invite you to be Holiday Cheer-Meister. I know you hate Christmas, but what if it's all just a misunderstanding? I myself am having some Yuletide doubts! But maybe if you reunite with the Whos and be a part of Christmas, then maybe it'll be all right for me, too! Please, please, you have to accept the award!"

  • A pop or contemporary theater ballad or mid-tempo piece of your choosing that you feel you can perform well and that is at least two (2) minutes long. Please do not sing any songs from or that are associated with and previous "Grinch" works (no "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" or "Where Are You Christmas?"). Auditions can have backing tracks or be acapella, however if you choose to go without a backing track please be mindful of your timing. Neither option is "preferred," however if you submit an acapella audition where you are not keeping time well it will be distract from your performance. There's absolutely no shame in needing a backing track, it's always in your best interests to play to your strengths.

If you need some ideas, any of these songs would be good choices:
"Times Are Hard For Dreamers" from Amelie
"Journey To The Past" from Anastasia
"Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid
    "Honey" by Kehlani
    "deja vu" by Olivia Rodrigo
    "White Horse" by Taylor Swift
"Second Hand White Baby Grand" from Bombshell (SMASH)
    "Kindergarten Boyfriend" from Heathers
    "Home" from Beetlejuice

Again this is a song of your choosing, so have fun and pick something that you feel good singing!

  • A vocal exercise or scale that demonstrates your range, primarily that you are comfortable singing between a B3 to a Db5*. If you are unfamiliar with with any such exercises, you can do the one provided in the link below (links to YouTube), and record the exercise that begins at the one-minute mark. Note: You do not have to do the entire exercise. Please stop once it becomes too high to be comfortable.

*The range of this song is somewhat flexible, as I am willing to change the key for a singer that does a good job but can't fit that range.
