Heathers: The Musical (18+/SENIOR GROUP)
Project Overview
WHAT IS HEATHERS THE MUSICAL?
Heathers: The Musical is a dark pop-rock comedy about Veronica Sawyer, a teenager who escapes the brutal social hierarchy of Westerberg High by joining the school's most ruthless clique, ruled by three girls named Heather. When Veronica falls for a dangerous, rebellious new student named J.D., an accidental death is disguised as a suicide, triggering a escalating wave of campus homicides. Veronica ultimately must stop J.D. from blowing up the school and the student body, choosing survival, empathy, and real human connection over violent nihilism.

What begins as a rebellious romance with Veronica quickly spirals into a dangerous, chaotic crusade as his warped sense of justice transforms passive teenage angst into a literal, lethal plot to destroy the school's toxic culture. ABOUT THE CHARACTER
Heather Duke is the insecure, deeply repressed, and ruthlessly ambitious antagonist-turned-tyrant of Heathers: The Musical. Originally the submissive "green Heather," she spends her high school days perpetually overshadowed, constantly body-shamed, and violently controlled by the clique's cruel leader, Heather Chandler. Beneath her quiet, book-reading exterior lies a reservoir of bitter resentment, which explodes to the surface when Chandler’s sudden death leaves a power vacuum. Instantly seizing the iconic red scrunchie, Duke transforms into an even more tyrannical, unhinged dictator who uses weaponized gossip and brutal social execution to rule Westerberg High, proving that the abused can easily become the ultimate abuser when given the crown.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER
Heather McNamara is the vulnerable, anxious, and deeply sympathetic head cheerleader of Westerberg High in Heathers: The Musical. Dressed in her signature yellow, she is the most sensitive and easily swayed member of the school's cruel, elite clique, the Heathers. Unlike her ruthless counterparts, McNamara does not rule with malice; instead, she conforms to their tyrannical standard strictly out of a paralyzing fear of isolation and intense peer pressure. Beneath her bubbly, popular exterior lies a tragic, hidden battle with severe depression and anxiety. When the brutal social hierarchy begins to fracture and the pressure becomes too heavy to bear, her coping mechanisms shatter, leading to a heartbreaking crisis that forces her to confront the true cost of popularity and fight to reclaim her own voice.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER
Martha Dunnstock is the fiercely loyal, optimistic, and deeply sympathetic heart of Heathers: The Musical. As Veronica Sawyer's childhood best friend, Martha is a sweet, gentle soul who clings to a childlike innocence and a love for old movies, completely out of place in the toxic, hyper-cruel social hierarchy of Westerberg High. Mocked relentlessly by the Heathers and nicknamed "Martha Dumptruck" due to her weight and style, she remains an easy target for the school's brutal bullying. Despite the constant torment, the abandonment by her changing best friend, and a devastating heartbreak involving her childhood crush, Ram Sweeney, Martha serves as the story’s moral anchor, reminding the audience of the tragic, human cost of high school cruelty.

As Westerberg High's star football linebacker and half of the school's notorious bully duo alongside his best friend Kurt Kelly, Ram rules the social hierarchy through intimidation, crude humor, and toxic masculinity. Beneath his confident, beer-chugging jock persona lies a desperate need for peer approval, which ultimately makes him an easy target for J.D.’s chaotic crusade, leading to a tragic, neon-lit demise that exposes the absurdity of the school's toxic culture.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER
Ms. Fleming is the wildly eccentric, melodramatically optimistic, and deeply out-of-touch guidance counselor and teacher at Westerberg High. Desperate to heal the school’s toxic social environment and craving her own moment in the spotlight she views student tragedy not just as a crisis, but as a golden opportunity for emotional breakthroughs and televised self-expression. Armed with a tambourine, new-age philosophies, and an intense belief in the power of "shining her light," she is a hilarious embodiment of superficial adult guidance, entirely blind to the actual chaos and danger unfolding right under her nose.

He is fiercely proud of his son’s athletic prowess and popular status at Westerberg High, frequently reminiscing about his own glory days and reinforcing aggressive, macho behavior. However, beneath his loud, beer-fueled exterior lies a surprisingly progressive if utterly chaotic and misguided capacity for acceptance. Following the tragic, staged "double suicide" of his son and Kurt, his grief pushes him to loudly and proudly champion LGBTQ+ love, delivering one of the show's most comedic and satirical high-energy anthems as he reveals his own hidden past.
