Glyph Rocks Animatics/Game

Glyph Rocks Animatics/Game

Project Overview

Glyph Rocks is a personal passion project that is inspired off of No Straight Roads and Hi-Fi Rush. This follows a band of six characters that is inspired off of Linkin Park, Paramore, and Q-Bomb.

In the world of Ongaku, music is the unifier of all people and the reason of evolution throughout the centuries. However, decades ago, technology became more prevalent. This causes a war between those who used magic as a means to create music and those who use technology to create music. In the end, technology won. Ever since then, the world has become strict on those who use magic or are a lineage aligned with magic.

The Trivials run this world, making sure that magic stays a thing of the past and technology remains the forefront of music. Yet the Trivials aren't exactly the greatest of people. Needing to gather a band together, Dot and Sterling found Glyph, a rock band willing to stand in the way of the other technology-aligned Trivials in order to give the people of Ongaku the freedom of choice as well as letting people use magic in their music and vice versa.

This is just a silly little concept of mine. Unfortunately, I am no game developer nor a musician. I know I do want to make this into a game sometime in the future but, for now, I intend on making animatics or comics of potential cutscenes that I imagine will be in the game. Just to get a proper footing on what I want to do if this does become a game.

If anyone does want to help make this into its own rhythm action game, please feel free to reach out. I have a BlueSky and a discord for easier means of communication, just feel free to send a message!

For now, I'm looking for people to voice the characters below! More characters may be put on the list later on, so keep your eyes peeled! I'll be looking over the auditions as often as I can.

(Also, apologies if these roles are unpaid. Maybe later down the line I'll be able to pay (perhaps if we get a kickstarter going), but, at the current moment, I am unable to)

Thank you! :D

Latest Updates

  • Final Update!

Thank you to everyone that auditioned! It makes me really happy seeing so many people down to lend their voices and talent into this project!

For the most part, voice actors have been selected for most of the characters! Don't worry if you didn't get a role this time. I'm hoping to put out more projects and maybe even more roles for Glyph Rocks in particular!

There are still some roles that either got no auditions, or I didn't find exactly what I'm looking for. So, expect to see a second part of voice actor finding really soon! More information on what's going to happen will be given to the selected voice actors real soon!

Again, thank you so much for being interested in Glyph Rocks! See you guys soon!

    -Truly

  • Fourth Update

    Been a hot second, folks!

So, today I will be solidifying some of the roles as well as extending the due date so that I can finish the last five characters to put on to the roster and keep open roles that I may need to hear a few more people audition for or there haven't been auditions to begin with.

That being said, I have selected people for some of the roles! Do note that I won't be starting anything major until I have the majority of the cast (or the very least all of the voices for the band). If you didn't get the role you wanted, then that's no problem! You may be considered for another role or might be a random NPC once we get the game going. If the role you went for is still open, that just means I'm having a hard time deciding on who to put for that role.

Again, nothing will open in the project DMs until I have a majority of the people I'm looking for the roles! This also goes for me contacting voice actors as well (unless I want to make a small silly animatic or comic and would like some voices for it).

Thank you guys so much for auditioning and keep your eyes peeled for the final five roles!

  • The Third Update

Hello again, everyone! It's been a hot second! We got a smaller update for you!

We now have a community discord!

Now as we're taking our time with developing the game and making animatics as well as waiting for the deadline for voice actors and team members to come to a close, I made a community discord. So, even if you don't end up getting a part, but want to be kept up to date on how development is going, or you just want to join others who want to hear the story we want to share, then feel free to join the discord!

You'll get access to the dev diary, see the finished references for characters, meet the current team members, see any made animatics of the characters, and see if there's any other roles that you can audition for!

So, feel free to join the discord for more updates and to just hang out!

  • The Second Update!

    Hello everyone!

A few things to note in this recent update:

Auditions have been extended to the end of July!

Still not sure what role you want to audition for? Then no worries! You still have plenty of time! And, if a lot of people want another extension, then I am more than happy to do so! I'm taking my time with this project, so there is no rush at all!

More roles beyond voice actors have been added!

Artists, animators, writers, musicians, and more! I do still intend on making this a game no matter how long it takes, so I'll need some helping hands in fields that I can't cover on my own.

The goal is to make it so that we can get a demo out so that I can get a Kickstarter going!

I would hate to take up so much of your time working on this project and, though I can't really pay you guys now, I'm hoping that if we get some money from Kickstarter, I can get you guys the payment that everyone deserves. But we need a demo to prove that we're going to be working on something! This is an entirely indie project, and I want everyone to get as much recognition for their hard work!

I still will be doing animatics, however! So, the voices are definitely still needed, even if we don't work on the game right away! This will take time!

The following voice acting roles still need auditions!

(Of course, all roles still need auditions, but these ones especially need at least one or two!)

    • [Protagonist] Dot (singing heavily preferred!)

    • [Protagonist] Quill

    • [Antagonist] DJ Roxanne Shock

    • [Antagonist] Enzo

    • [Antagonist] Hawk

    • [Antagonist] Anna

    • [Antagonist] Asrai (singing heavily preferred!)

    • [Side Character] Calliope

    • [Side Character] Clementine

    • [Side Character] Sirius

    • [Side Character] Mothenelle

    • [Side Character] Finnian

    • [Side Character] Autumn

If any of these roles fit your fancy, feel free to audition for them!

That's it for the updates this time around! Hope everyone has a great week, and I'll catch you all at the next update!

    Thank you!

    - Truly

  • New Roles Added!

    Hello everyone!

Just wanted to update you all that there are new voice acting roles added to the list! These characters are side characters that start out as mini-bosses people can optionally meet. Upon defeating these mini-bosses, they become call-in characters that can be used one at a time. Each of them having their own personality and abilities.

It's so exciting hearing all of these auditions so far and I can't wait to hear more! Thank you so much for your support on the Glyph Rocks project!

    -Truly

We're in need of concept artists, 3D Background Artists, and designers (typically any kind of artist needed for a game).

What we're aiming for is something similar to Cult of the Lamb, which is 2D characters (maybe some items as well) in a 3D atmosphere. Most of the areas will be made into towns and cities with bits of nature scenery.

If you're applying, please put down your portfolio and your discord username, as I intend on getting everyone who gets accepted into one discord server so we can stay organized!

More than one person will get accepted!

Looking for musicians that know how to make an assortment of different genres such as:

- Rock

- EDM

- Electro-swing

- Funk/Jazz-Funk

- Steampunk

- Gothic Waltz

- Dark Carnival (preferably epic dark carnival)

- Pop/K-Pop (with vocals)

As well as turning anything that isn't rock into rock songs with vocals!

What I'm going for is something similar to No Straight Roads and Hi-Fi Rush. Boss battle music will just feel awesome to listen to while, as players are fighting the bosses, the music will shift between the boss's main music and the rock version of their song.

If you're applying, please put down your portfolio and your discord username, as I intend on getting everyone who gets accepted into one discord server so we can stay organized!

Role assigned to: Abi Ing

Dot, aka Elizabeth Gregor, is a cybernetic Faely woman from Shortwave City. Though she lost most of her body due to a very bad accident, that won't stop her from inspiring others and even herself to follow her dreams. Yet, that doesn't mean she has her own personal qualms to deal with. Especially with her very obsessive ex that she has a hard time saying no to.

In Glyph, she is the lead singer of the group, though she has gone through a few years of music school that allowed her to grow in her proficiency in other instruments. As a character, she's very high-energy, playful, and charismatic, always pushing her friends to reach for their goals and being an overall leader for the group. However, she's not a big fan of those willing to manipulate others for their own greed. People should be free to utilize their music however they want!

If I do end up getting music made, there is a chance I would need the selected actor to sing. I'm looking for a mezzo-soprano voice that is able to sing rock songs. Though this is not a guarantee to happen immediately, I would prefer if anyone who auditions has a little singing demo to their audition!

  • [Determined/Facing a Foe] "Do you know how much damage you're causing with sapping the power from all the homes in the city? You're going to endanger people with your need for electricity, and this has to stop!"

Role assigned to: MyosotisVA

Sterling, aka Jingyi "Justin" Park, is a human that resides in Shortwave City, running around the streets and buildings as a graffiti artist and a freedom fighter. He and his little sister, Mingling "Quill" Park, work together in order to spread the word on how the Trivials are negatively impacting all parts of Ongaku. Yet, when things are starting to get worse, especially within the seven major cities, he and Dot come up with a plan to put a band together to utilize their music against the Trivials.

As a character, Sterling is very down to earth but has a strong desire to give the people of Ongaku the freedom of choice they deserve. Though he can occasionally come off as passive aggressive or intimidating to strangers, he is able to get along with pretty much anyone, as long as they aren't being jerks themselves. If they are, he definitely comes off as cold. He is not only the best friend to Dot, but is the boyfriend to Teddy Harmony, the group's guitarist.

In the band, he is not only responsible for playing the keytar and the keyboard, but he is also another lead vocalist. Much like Dot, I would prefer there to be a singing demo attached to the audition file. Though, of course, this isn't mandatory. Sterling's singing range is a tenor to baritone range.

Teddy Harmony - Protagonist

Role assigned to: Connor Reynolds

Teddy Harmony, aka Tiberius Fredricks, is a human bartender, residing in Shortwave City, though was originally from Cucina City. One of his fathers, Enzo Cobretti, is a Trivial member running Cucina City. However, Enzo utilized Teddy's accident that caused him to lose a leg as a means to get more money. He despised his father for that, moving to Shockwave City where he fell in love with Sterling and befriended Dot and Quill. While in Shockwave City, he started owning his own bar called Strawberry Street.

As a character, Teddy is flirtatiously charming, typically catching people off their guard with any quick quips. Yet he's sort of a gentle giant, in a way, having a more calmed down, caring side to him past the flirtatious facade. However, he has a great disdain to those who are overly greedy or just downright creepy. And he is more than willing to stand in front of those who are afraid to stand up for themselves.

In the band, he is the guitarist but would occasionally sing for a bit in a song himself. Again, having a singing demo is preferred, yet not mandatory. He is going to sing less than Dot and Sterling, but there will be moments where he'll sing. He has a baritone vocal range.

Tavi - Protagonist

Role assigned to: Alice Irvin

Tavi, aka Octavia Applegate, is an immortal human witch coming from a magical town called Violet Crook. Having experienced the Magic vs Technology war decades ago that shifted how people utilized music or how music is created, Tavi is a wanted woman trying to bring magic no matter what all the laws against magic says. She runs Violet Crook and makes sure that anyone magically aligned is under her protection. She was also responsible for saving a former Trivial member, William "Buttons" Herald, after he was wrongfully killed by his former partner, "The Puppeteer."

As a character, Tavi is very prim and perfect, having a bit of Mary Poppin vibes coming off of her and speaking in a low, British accent. She is very motherly and watches over the band to make sure that all of them are as good as they can be for the musical battles to come. Though, of course, she's a bit war-torn, having been through a long, rough patch that caused her to be a bit strict and demanding.

In the band, she is the bassist. If you want to add a singing demo to your audition, you can, but it is not absolutely needed! If she were to sing, she would be in the alto range.

Buttons, aka William Herald, is a patchwork doll that formally used to be a Pureheart. Having formally been a Trivial member running Fabricon City with who is now known as "The Puppeteer", he was betrayed by his partner and left to die. However, Tavi saw the goodness in his heart and wanted to give him the second chance he deserves. Now a part of Glyph, Buttons is seeking Justice on the corrupted laws of what once was his colorful city.

As a character, Buttons is very friendly and kind yet having a strong sense of justice when it comes to handling problems. Despite his friendly demeanor, he's not afraid to get serious when needed. Despite this, he tries his best to hold back tears and stops himself from being emotional in front of the others, especially after showing his emotions to someone that ended up hating him for it and hurting him in the end.

In the band, Buttons is the drummer. A singing demo with the audition is optional for him, so you don't have to be a singer in order to audition for Buttons. If you do, he has a tenor singing voice.

Quill, aka Mingling Park, is a human radio show host from Shortwave City that originally was from Shouyinji City. She's the group tough girl and extra muscle as well as the little sister to Sterling. Not only is she a radio show host, but she's also an inventor, too, being responsible for some of the instruments and weapons the group uses to take down the Trivials. Yet her spite towards certain people as her come off as crude.

As a character, she's very blunt and occasionally passive aggressive. She tries to get any job done as soon as possible and hates having so many obstacles standing in her way. Quill is easy to anger and get on her bad side if you push the wrong buttons. Though she cares about the band very much, she has uneasy opinions about Tavi due to her having participated in the Magic vs Technology war decades ago.

In the band, Quill is sort of the mixer of the group, equipped with her mixer gauntlets and a variety of DJ equipment. Though she along with Buttons and Tavi hardly sings (and she's the rarest to do so), adding a singing demo to the audition is optional, but not mandatory! If you do, her singing range is mezzo-soprano to alto.

DJ Shock is a genka woman who is the Trivial leader overlooking Shortwave City and is the first leader Glyph would need to conquer in order to further free the people of Ongaku. Roxanne runs the Voltage Stadium, hosting parties on a weekly basis by draining the power from most buildings in Shortwave in order to amplify her music beyond just the stadium walls.

As a character, Roxanne is very much rich kid coded. She always thinks that, if she pays people enough money, she can be able to get someone to back off and let her do whatever she wants. She's heavily spoiled, thinking that her music is the best of the best while putting up a facade that she's an extremely cool person because of the music that she makes. Box, aka Oliver Tellings, is a half-faely man that is the Trivial Leader of Exporteren City. He wears a box on his face for who knows why, but he manages the exports coming in and out of the city and into other parts of Ongaku. However, the rest of the Trivials are telling him to prioritize and immediately pass anything meant for the Trivials immediately, causing other exports to not reach certain destinations in time. Of course, he is forced to listen.

As a character, Box is timid and soft-spoken, often trying not cause any confrontations and tends not to fight unless provoked. The he tries not to fight regardless. However, the curse that is on his face prevents him from remaining passive all the time. Once that box on his head is knocked off, the curse comes into full force, unleashing Shade. His voice is soft and light, but not ghostly.

Once Shade comes out, Box's voice will be more distorted. However, Shade will typically talk more while Box cowers in fear.

Shade is the curse that is attached to Box. It is an entity of darkness hanging on to Box's face, voicing and unleashing his more dark and dangerous thoughts, typically being the one to force Box to enact them. Only when the box is back on his head will the curse be tamed for the time being.

As a character, Shade is malicious, almost acting like Venom in a sense, but less of a gravelly voice. It is devious and sinister, only wanting the worse for Box and taking advantage of his vulnerable emotions. However, behind closed doors, he only wishes to gain greater profits. After a terrible divorce with his husband, Mitch Fredricks, and losing custody over his only child, all Enzo could think about now is gaining more money. So, he charges any farmers trying to sell their goods more in order to sell it as well as shutting down any restaurants that aren't charging their customers more or if their food isn't so great.

As a character, Enzo can come off as kind and fatherly to those he interacts with in public. He has to keep a good image to the people after all. However, he is manipulative and greedy, willing to do anything in order to get more money or profit off of something or someone. However, they despise the thought of magic to begin with, being a firm believer that technology is meant to be the only way that people can make music. This is why their goal is to destroy any remaining structures or people aligned with magic.

Iso Areminta, aka the Puppeteer, is a Corruptheart individual and the Trivial Leader of Fabricon City. Though they are an individual of the law, they are also very could and strict about it. After disposing of William Herald, someone that they used to see as their beloved before all they could see him as is a child, they rule over Fabricon with an iron fist. They got rid of all the colorful toy shops, tailors, and the arts in order to replace it with police stations, law schools, and libraries. With their robotic puppets they use to constantly monitor over the city, their word is always law.

As a character, the Puppeteer is cold and precise, wanting everything to be perfect no matter what. They hate anything being out of line and not to their original vision. And, if something is not to their liking, they will be disposed of with haste. The Puppeteer is a genderfluid character. Their voice is androgynous, so anyone can try and audition for them. Anna and Zana Freed are Faely twins that are Trivial Leaders of Shouyinji City. With the city being the equivalent of Hollywood, Anna and Zana run the Arachnid Circus, the most popular show ever to be seen throughout all of Ongaku. However, their ego and theatrical prowess makes it hard to get along with them behind the scenes. They are inseparable, hardly ever being seen without the other hooking on to their arm. And with their ego comes their desire for fame and to be the only popular show in the city. They always sabotage any performers they think may be a threat to their fame with little evidence leading to them doing it.

As a character, they both act very similar to each other. They're both really creepy every time they talk and are the equivalent of the bad type of theater kid. Thinking that their performances are better and holding a great sense of selfishness for only themselves. Zana is the male twin, having a creepy, devilish voice that is light in tone.

Asrai Lorelei, aka The Siren, is a half Pirahna Beastkin that is not only the Trivial Leader of Vibrato City, but the overall leader of the Trivials itself. She is the most popular musician in all of Ongaku, her music being heard all over the world. She has the beauty and grace of any pop star, yet she's very power hungry. However, despite her also wanting to get rid of the magic in the world, she is a bit of a hypocrite. Her singing is able to sway people to favoring her heavily, even if her singing is being heard through a recording. All she wants is to be the only one to have magic no matter what others say.

As a character, Asrai is sassy and charming. She utilizes her beauty and her voice in order to get people to do what she wants. Though she's a powerhouse of a woman, being the strongest of the Trivials despite appearances. She's not afraid to show off her combative prowess in order to demand respect out of someone. She's very confident in what she does, no matter how bad it is. Her voice is sort of like a Jessica Rabbit sort of voice, yet the tone being a bit higher than hers.

That being said, Asrai is a singer and may get at least one song (if I do end up getting music produced). So, though there's no guarantees that singing will be needed, putting a singing demo in your audition is preferred, but no mandatory! Her vocal range is soprano.

  • [Annoyed] "Party crashers? Aha... Well, you've beaten up all of the rest of the Trivials, but you dare to face the beloved siren. Well, why don't we give this audience a show, hm?"

And the pressure of keeping her magical alignments a secret only adds on to her slight paranoia. Upon being found by the band, Calliope can't bring herself to either run or fight against them, especially after seeing Dot trying to calm her down.

As a character, Calliope sometimes bounces back and forth between being calm and collected to sounding crazy and being paranoid that someone is going to try and strip her magic away from her. Despite no longer dating Dot, she still adores her. Anyone that shows Calliope a hint of kindness will remind her of Dot. And she does have a soft spot for those who are selfless and caring. They are not only a knight, but also the mentor to Buttons during his recovery days within the town. Clementine takes their role as a knight very seriously, honoring both the magical and the non-magical that comes past the gates each day by protecting them.

Sirius Lorelei is a half piranha Beastkin that is the little brother to Asrai Lorelei. For years, he has remained within her shadow. Though, yes, he would help her make the instrumentals of all of her songs that would grow wildly popular all around Ongaku, he never really gotten proper credit. He doesn't agree with what his sister is doing, but she's the only family that he has left. He's stuck in a very tricky spot with whether he should stick by his sister or follow his own morals. Perhaps the band could be able to convince Sirius to follow his heart.

As a character, Sirius is very intelligent, being a fellow inventor much like Quill. He is very unsure about what he should do, though, having not that great of social intelligence compared to his technological intelligence. He can come off as a bit awkward and weird to strangers, not really knowing how to talk without tripping over his own words. Sirius is typically a follower more than a leader.

Mothenelle Margreaves is an owl Beastkin. She's a traveler not tied to any group or organization but rather is on a quest to try and find her two moms that she lost many years ago. Yet, she is blissfully unaware of the dangers the Trivials really are in controlling the world. However, her lack of brain is made up by the extreme brawn that she has. Even though the only reason she meets Glyph in the first place was because she got curious and Quill saw her as a spy for the Trivials, her naive nature does give the group more viewpoints to take.

As a character, Moth is extremely naive and childish, always wanting to have fun with new people every day. She is heavily optimistic and sees the good side in even the most horrible of people. She even sees viewpoints in situations that most people tend not to consider. Her speech isn't really the greatest, though, speaking in a slightly broken English. Her tone of voice sort of sounds like Ms. Chalice from the Cuphead Show in a way.
