Fallout 4 Quest Mod - "Mind Games" (Call #4)

Project Overview

Hi everyone! I’m looking for voice actors for a new story-driven quest mod for “Fallout 4”. I'm holding these casting calls in stages, filling different roles at each stage. For this fourth call, I am casting for one lead role and a number of supporting and minor roles.

About Fallout 4 and Mind Games

“Fallout 4” is a role-playing game set in and around Boston, MA (aka the Commonwealth) during the year 2287, where communities are rebuilding 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse. “Mind Games” puts the player character in the role of a detective on the case of a missing person, which leads to a broader story that connects to the plot from the base game.

The video above will give you an idea of the mod, and it also showcases the amazing talent of the voice actors who've already joined the project. (the video's about 40 minutes long so please don't feel you need to watch all of it!).

Content Guidance

- Rare sexual references

- Frequent strong language

- Frequent references to violence and substance abuse

Compensation

The mod is a non-commercial fan project without funding, so I cannot offer anything close to industry rates. I value the talent and effort actors bring with them, so I’d like to offer something where I can, and I can budget for a flat $35 for the project for the lead role and $25 for supporting roles. For the minor roles, I'm afraid I can't offer compensation but, as it's a fan project, hopefully you'll be up for doing it for fun!

Payment ideally via paypal.

Requirements

- A good mic setup so that we can make the voices and the mod as a whole feel like part of the main game.

- No experience is necessary but clean recordings are really important.

The audition

For the audition itself, you don’t need to stick exactly to the lines. Feel free to change the words and improvise if it feels right. You are very welcome to do more than one take, if you wish (either AABB or ABAB - whichever you prefer).

Everyone is welcome to audition for more than one role. Anyone who has already been cast in this mod is welcome to audition too.

Some of the characters are "ghouls", who are irradiated humans. They speak with a raspier voice than normal. Here's an example. Only a slight rasp is needed - you don't need to push it any further if you don't want to: https://youtu.be/r5kfJH6P3wI?si=jqzBkgX3VDIx4VX-

I won't be making any casting decisions until the deadline for auditions has passed, so anyone who wants to audition will have until then to do so.

Working style

- No live voice-acting sessions, so you’ll be free to do the recordings as you want, but within specified timeframes (which I try to keep as flexible as possible so that we can work around your schedule).

- Please be prepared to do pick-ups / re-recordings if necessary.

- Ad-libbing is encouraged if it feels right for you, with the only caveat being that the lines of the other characters are fixed, so we’ll have to respect that in order for the dialogue to flow.

- You will not be expected to edit, cut or process the recordings that you send me, but they will need to be in a specific format to work in the game (that being 44100hz, 16-bit, mono WAV).

- Although the lines will have to be in WAV format once you're cast, the auditions don't have to be WAV.

Latest Updates

  • Casting has concluded

    Hi everyone

Once again, thank you so much for auditioning for Mind Games. There were 860 auditions in total and it was amazing to hear so much talent. Sorry it took a while, but I've now made my casting decisions.

I've reached out to a few of you with feedback but unfortunately I can't respond to everyone individually. In a lot of cases, there's no useful feedback I can give - it's just a case of making a difficult decision between a number of excellent takes.

Thank you again for taking the time to audition.

  • Closed for auditions

Thank you all so much for taking the time to send in your amazing auditions. I've been truly blown away by the interest shown in the project.

In the end there were 852 auditions, so it'll take me a bit of time to (somehow) narrow that down for casting.

And as much as I'd love to reply to all of you, it's just not possible with so many entries. But I will try to give feedback where I think I've got something meaningful to offer.

There will be a fifth call for Mind Games later in the year, and I hope you'll audition for that as well.

    Thanks again!

  • Thank you for the auditions!

    Hi everyone!

It's been humbling to hear so many amazing auditions so far. Thank you so much!

One thing I forgot to mention (which I'm adding to the project description now) is that I won't be making any casting decisions until the deadline has passed, so that everyone who wants to audition has the chance to do so.

    Thanks!

Lead role (approx 400 lines)

Age: 30s to 40s

Second-in-command in a religious cult called the Children of Atom that worships radiation. Stoic with a measured voice.

Line 1 notes: You and a group of residents of a nearby town have just fought off a horde of feral ghouls (zombies basically) in some sewer tunnels. While everyone else thinks the danger is over, you remain alert, knowing the gunfire will have attracted more to your location.

Line 2 notes:  After the ferals are finally dealt with, one of the residents accuses you of tampering with their defenses, and insults your religion. You harbor no ill will against the residents but you won't tolerate blasphemy. You are wearing a mechanical exoskeleton and are carrying an enormous gun, and you're willing to use it ("look upon my own"). You want the town to join your religion and to worship Atom, your deity, but you won't force it upon them. You're hoping you can ally together against the feral threat.

  • The sounds of battle will have rung out in all directions. Prepare yourself.

  • We did nothing to your weapons. And you would do well to look upon my own before indulging in blasphemy. Time and decay are costing you your defences. You must better your tools if you wish to fight against your environment. Accept Atom's embrace and our machinists would help you with this task.

Supporting role (200 - 300 lines)

Age: 40s to 50s / ghoul

One of the heads of security at an underground town called The Sluice. Experienced and well-loved by your team, to whom you're almost like a father figure.

Line 1 notes: You and some of your security team are selling a crate of drugs to a group of bandits in some abandoned tunnels on behalf of The Sluice. This isn't a moral issue to you or your town as it might be in our world - it's just how you survive. You've conducted this sale on numerous occasions but this time the leader of the bandits, Royce, wants to negotiate on price. He thinks he's got the upper hand because you don't have many other buyers. You've never had a high opinion of him, and you're not impressed by his attempt to squeeze more money out of you.

Line 2 notes: The deal is interrupted by the sounds of feral ghouls (zombies basically) echoing through the tunnels. You and the bandits are all on edge. Despite your feelings towards Royce, you know you need to work together to survive what's about to happen.

Voice description:

  • Don't make like you're important, Royce. You're a dime a dozen.

  • Royce, listen to me, you wanna get out of this alive, we gotta work together. We're outnumbered as is.

Supporting role (200 - 300 lines)

Experienced leader of a small scavenging team at an undergound town. You're responsible for venturing out into the tunnels and bringing back whatever you can find.  Dry / sardonic.

Line 1 notes: You're looking over the things you brought back from your last scavenging run when the Player walks in. The Player recently did something that might have inadvertantly put the town in jeopardy. Half the residents are up in arms about it. You don't think it's a big deal. You believe the Player was right in doing what they did, and that the town will be able to deal with the reprecussions.

You've never met the Player but when you see them walk up to you, you know they must be the one everyone's talking about.

"losing their tatos" basically stands in for "losing their marbles". You can't help but be amused at how many residents are kicking up a fuss at what the Player did.

Line 2 notes: Mason, the town's mayor, would have already scolded the Player for their actions when they arrived. You know that your crew, who are standing beside you, are also annoyed by the Player, so your question to them at the end is more like a gentle warning for them not to start laying into the Player too.

Voice description:

  • *Chuckle* Well, how about that. So you're the one who's got everyone losing their tatos around here.

  • (To Player) So I'm guessing Mason gave you the third degree out there, huh? (To your crew) Which means there's no need for us to start burning their chops as well, right?

Supporting role: (200 to 300 lines)

American, Australian or New Zealand accent. Ad-libbing highly encouraged if you want to make the lines sound more authentic to a particular accent.

A friendly, bubbly ghoul bartender who has recently started suffering some memory loss issues.

Line 1 notes: The Player has just asked if there's anything special about a drink you're selling called Nuka-Glow. It's a drink you're proud to have helped create, which can make people feel strong, powerful and confident. It's extremely radioactive however, and it'll make non-ghouls sick (like the Player). You think it would be funny if the Player took a sip.

"Deathclaw" is a kind of giant, powerful lizard.

"Behemoth" is an enormous, dangerous mutant.

"Smoothies" is your affectionate word for humans (who have smooth skins unlike ghouls)

Line 2 notes: One of the Player's companions greeted you but you have no recollection of them. They say they once helped you find some crates of Nuka-Cola, a soda from which Nuka-Glow is created, which means they've basically helped you keep your bar running. You still don't remember but, what the hell, you'll give them some (regular!) Nuka-Cola as thanks.

"Courtesy of you, I guess" acknowledges the companion's help in getting the Nuka-Cola, but also your memory loss. Whereas the rest of the line is bright, here there's a tinge of concern that your condition is worsening.

  • The Nuka-Glow? Damn right there's something special about it. Hits like a deathclaw and makes ya feel like one to boot. If you're one of us, that is. It'll still make you smoothies feel like you could wrestle a behemoth, sure, but your rad counter's gonna be screaming like a banshee while you do it, same as your belly!

  • Did you? Well, hell, in that case I oughtta be thanking you for keeping the tap runnin' around here. Unless I already did thank you...? Ah, what the hell, I'll thank you again. Here, have a Nuka Cola, on the house. Both of you. The normal kind that is. Courtesy of you, I guess.

Helps run a bar at an underground town, specifically renting rooms to travelers passing through. Had a hard time growing up, and was previously reserved and quiet, but she's increasingly coming out of her shell.

Line 1 notes: You and the Player have just introduced yourselves and engaged in some small talk, so now it's time to ask if they need a room. This town is in a sewer and the bed is just a mattress on the ground. You're neutral about the Hotel Rexford and the other bar.

Line 2 notes: You greeted the Player's companion, a detective, and the Player has asked if you know him. You're fond of the detective, but a lot of people in the town aren't, even though they could probably do with his help. Diamond City is a large settlement in a relatively safer part of the Commonwealth, whereas things aren't looking too good around here right now.

Voice description:

  • So do you need a place to stay? We've got beds to rent for the night right here if you want. Maybe not quite as comfy as the Hotel Rexford but they'll do in a pinch. Or, if you're looking for something more permanent, there's a room for sale over by the Glowing Gutter. That's the other bar, in the east section. Talk to Grace.

  • Yeah. He helped me out a while back. I know there are a lot of people who want him to stick to Diamond City, but, to be honest, I think we could do with him lending a hand around this end of the neighborhood.

A gentle giant of a ghoul. Meditates a lot. Deep, measured voice.

Any accent, American or otherwise.

Line 1 notes: The undeground town you live in has been on lockdown because of a threat on the surface. Since the Player has been allowed into town, they must have dealt with the threat.

Line 2 notes: One of the other residents, Ben, had ventured into the tunnels and returned on the brink of death. The doctor, Mary, had asked the Player to go into the tunnels to find something to save him, but the Player wasn't able to find it. More philosophical than comforting.

Voice description:

  • We were told not to expect anyone from the surface. Which means you must have taken care of our woes up there. If so, you have my thanks.

  • Don't let yourself be troubled by Ben. He wouldn't have survived even if you had found what Mary needed. Some things in the dark, there's no escaping from.

A resident of an undergound town with some basic medical knowledge. Usually accompanies scavenging or engineering teams in the tunnels, and is usually therefore on edge.

Line 1 notes: You and your team have just survived being ambushed by feral ghouls (zombies basically). One of your colleagues has been injured but you've managed to patch him up during the fight. The team leader asks how he's doing.

Line 2 notes: The team leader said he was worried you were going to lose the patient. While he and the others had been fighting off the ambush, you had been trying to save the patient with screaming ferals and flying bullets all around you. You think you did a damn good job, considering. Snapping slightly but in a good-natured way because mostly you're just glad the ferals are gone and the patient's alive.

Voice description:

Age: late 20s to 30s

A mechanic at an underground town called The Sluice. Head-down, get-on-with-work type.

Thanks to the Player's inadvertant actions, The Sluice is now potentially threatened by a gangster named Petrelli, who you remember as a tyrant alongside his second-in-command, Vic, when you were growing up in another town called Goodneighbor. Petrelli has claimed a nearby vault as his new base and half the town are, like you, convinced he'll attack The Sluice next. The other half think he doesn't have what it takes.

Line 1 notes: You're talking to another resident who, along with her husband, William, (who isn't present), doesn't think Petrelli is a threat. But that's because they don't know him like you do. It's a casual conversation but there's tension in the air.

Line 2 notes: The Player has approached you while you were talking to the other resident above. Earlier, you overheard William telling the Player that Petrelli isn't a concern. You think that's a mistake.

Voice description:

  • Maybe you two should take it more seriously. You weren't in Goodneighbor. You don't know what it was like.

  • I heard you talking to William earlier. He might not be worried about Petrelli but he doesn't know him like we did. And neither do you. It was open season in Goodneighbor with him and Vic. He won't settle for just a vault.

You were locked in an irradiated cage so that you would turn into a ghoul and join their cult. The Player has just freed you from the cage, but you're already horribly sick. You're sat on the ground, leaning against a wall, holding your sides.

Line 1 notes: You asked the Player if they had any medication, and they said they don't. You're glad, at least, that the Player has killed all the Divided. You're sick, in pain, and feel like you're about to explode. You know you don't have long left.

Line 2 notes: The Player has medicated you, so you're not about to explode anymore but you're still in pain. The Player asks you who your captors were.

You definitely aren't expecting anyone to be coming into the town from the sewers. You take your job seriously and you're untrusting of outsiders.

Line 1 notes: Your superior, Larsen, has radioed to tell you that a stranger (the Player) has arrived in town and they might be snooping around. They're free to explore the town but the tunnels are off-limits. The Player walks up to your gate and you're ready to send them back into town.

Line 2 notes:  Four people emerge from a sewer pipe right outside your gate. One is a resident you know well, two are visitors you know of, and one is a stranger. You spin around at the sound of their arrival, rifle pointed squarely in their direction.

A ghoul preacher belonging to a cult of radiation worshippers called the Divided, who pray to their god, Atom. The members of the Divided are all ghouls. They consider themselves true believers, unlike the non-irradiated human members of their rival sect, the Children of Atom.

Zealous, charismatic and insane.

Line 1 notes: A drug deal is taking place between two other groups on the edges of your holy territory in the sewers. You and your fellow zealots surprise them from above. Drugs are an affront to Atom, as is the presence of these dealers. You invite those of your flock, who wish to show devotion, to kill these dealers in Atom's name.

Line 2 notes: As your zealots prepare to kill the dealers, you walk among them, exalting Atom and disparaging the Children of Atom, who prefer to live in peace with these dealers. You're encouraging your followers to kill, and reminding them that, because they are irradiated ghouls, they are truly Atom's chosen.

  • And there it is, brothers and sisters, defilers and heretics peddling their filth, polluting our domain with their contempt for the holy truth. For those of you who wish to show your devotion... allow me to present your altar.

  • The false prophets of Atom, the deceivers who subvert his word, would have you believe he wishes peace upon the interlopers. That he would tolerate such encroachment upon this sacred site. But we know the truth, for we have been blessed. We who have gazed upon Atom's beauty, we few, who bear the marks of his light, who have truly bathed in his voice.
