Line 1 notes: The undeground town you live in has been on lockdown because of a threat on the surface. Since the Player has been allowed into town, they must have dealt with the threat.
Line 2 notes: One of the other residents, Ben, had ventured into the tunnels and returned on the brink of death. The doctor, Mary, had asked the Player to go into the tunnels to find something to save him, but the Player wasn't able to find it. More philosophical than comforting.

Don't let yourself be troubled by Ben. He wouldn't have survived even if you had found what Mary needed. Some things in the dark, there's no escaping from.
