Project Overview
The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift -- every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger.
NOTE: All characters are Colombian so all must be able to have a Hispanic accent, at least when it comes to certain words or phrases. Such as “Mi Vida,” or “Mi Amor.”

Mirabel is an enthusiastic young girl who lacks the magical gift that her entire family sustains. She devotes herself to saving Casa Madrigal in the magical world of Encanto. She loves to solve problems and tries to make friends on her way to making the world safer. Mirabel is lively and always open to help her family. She is beautiful on the inside and on the outside, which is very special. She is a very optimistic girl who, despite her lack of having a magical gift, manages to scrape by with her down to earth approach to solving problems.

Isabela is an elegant young woman, who is granted the gift to make flowers bloom wherever she goes. Everyone thinks of Isabela as beautiful, kind, and perfect, while Mirabel feels that she is haughty and pretentious. It is clear that Isabela is not fond of Mirabel, as seen by her petty and immature behavior towards her youngest sibling.
I never wanted to marry him! I was doing it for the family!

“Hug it out?” Luisa can’t lift an empanada. Mariano’s nose looks like a smashed papanya. HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?!

Daughter of Pepa and Felix Madrigal. Oldest of three siblings.
She is the most well-informed about everyone else’s business thanks to her magical super-hearing cluing her into what others say, even when they don’t mean to be heard. Usually whenever she hears something and/or reveals what she hears, she gives out a small squeak, and talks in a low tone close to a whisper.
Oh! Mirabel didn’t get one. Hm.
The only one worried about the magic is you. And the rats that talk in the walls. Oh! And Luisa. I heard her eye twitching. All night. Hm.

Camilo is best described as a prankster with a heart of gold. He uses his powers to assist the town and entertain the children, while also poking fun, such as when he sang about Bruno during his part and when he tried cheering up Antonio by mimicking his father. He's also known to pass a few snide remarks here and there, such as when he remarked how they were homeless. He has a softer side to him, shown when he tried calming his mother Pepa by giving her tea, even affectionally calling her Mami. Like everyone else, he cares deeply for his family and Casita.

Antonio is an innocent boy with a heart of gold. He also doesn’t begrudge Mirabel for her lack of powers, but instead looks up to her and finds comfort in being with her, such as when he pleads that she walks him during his ceremony. He's shown to be very caring and helpful, such as when he offers his room to Bruno and Mirabel. In the beginning of the movie, we see how shy he is without Mirabel. He is also caring towards the rest of the family and willing to use his gift for the good of others, like when he told his possums to warm Alma’s seat at the breakfast table.

Alma is a kind woman who cares about her family a lot but doesn't show it much due to her preoccupation of keeping the family perfect. She is seen to tell the story of the candle that blessed the family during the gift ceremony of a Madrigal. However, despite her love for her family, Alma seems disappointed in the fact that Mirabel did not get a gift unlike the rest of her family, and in later years doesn't necessarily focus much on Mirabel's life due to her ordinary abilities, and sometimes even alienating her from the other Madrigal activities.
Mirabel! What are your doing?
You have to stop, Mirabel! The cracks started with you. Bruno left because of you! Luisa is losing her powers, Isabela is out of control because of you! I don’t know why you weren’t given a gift, but it is not an excuse for you to hurt this family!
I never have been able to come back here. This river… is where we were given our miracle. [referring to her Pedro] I thought that we would have a different life… I thought that I would be a different woman.

Older sister of the Madrigal Triplets. Mother to Isabela, Luisa and Mirabel.
Julieta is a caring woman who loves Mirabel very much. She tries to convince Mirabel that her daughter is just as special as anyone else in the Madrigal family, but Mirabel refuses to believe her mother. Julieta loves each of her children very much. Julieta does not want Mirabel to go on the journey to save the magic, for she is worried her daughter will be wounded or will be in grave danger. Julieta is the town doctor who also possesses the ability to heal people through the food she cooks. Of all the Madrigals, she’s got it the most together, and she’s a good caretaker for the town, she has that wonderful warmth and professionalism that every doctor should have.
[to her mother] Mama, you’ve always been to hard on Mirabel.
[to Mirabel] Mi vida, you okay? You don’t have to overdo it.
[to Mirabel] I wish you could see yourself the way I do. You are perfect. Just like this. You’re just as special as anyone else in this family.

Agustín is a kind man who cares very much about Mirabel and his other daughters. He is very accident-prone, and his allergy to bees causes him to require Julieta's healing food on a regular basis. He tries very hard to encourage Mirabel, telling her he understands what it's like to be "un-ceptional" in a magical family. He is very protective of Mirabel and defends her against Alma, his mother-in-law.
She’s right, amor. First gift ceremony since yours, a lot of emotions. And I’ve been there. When me and your tio Felix married into the family, outsiders who had no gift never ever would. Surrounded by the exceptional, it was easy to feel… unexceptional. I’m just saying I get it.
[whisper panic] We say nothing. Abuela wants tonight to be perfect. Til the Guzman’s leave, you did not break into Bruno’s tower, the magus is NOT dying, the house is not breaking. Luisa’s gift is not fading, and no one will know. Just act normal. No one has to know.

Middle child of the Madrigal Triplets. Mother of Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio.
Pepa is considered a bit "extra" at times due to her emotional temperament and the way her feelings directly impact the weather around her. To help her control her emotions and thus her weather, she chants a mantra to herself for "clear skies." Her temper is easily soothed by Félix, who can calm her by being flirtatious or even simply placing a hand on her shoulder. She cares about her family immensely, especially her children. But she is very serious when it comes to talking about her own brother Bruno, whom she resents at times due to the negative outcomes of his prophecies; Despite this resentment, Pepa was quick to embrace Bruno and welcome him back into the family after he returned from a decade-long absence.
Pepa also sometimes lets her temper get the better of her, and often says things that she doesn't mean.
I know, Mama! But now I can’t find Antonio! What do you want from me?!
Great! Now I’m thundering! And the thundering would lead to a drizzle! And a drizzle would lead to a sprinkle! [deep breath] Clear skies. Clear skies…

Pepa’s husband Félix, another ordinary man who was married into the family, is there to keep her grounded. He is fun, carefree, and kind to the whole family, including Mirabel. He is shown to be the life of the party, even getting the strict Abuela Alma to dance with him and calling Bruno the estranged brother of the family a "Bro".
Pepi, amore, you’re gonna get him all wet.
It was a nightmare! She needs to know Pepi, she needs to know. He would say something terrible and then BRAH! Te-te-te-te-BAH! It would happen.

Youngest of the Madrigal Triplets. Uncle to Isabela, Luisa, Mirabel, Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio.
Bruno is a reclusive, anxious person who tries to manage his anxiety with superstitious rituals, such as knocking on wood and throwing salt over his shoulder. He is also a goofy person who enjoys acting and telenovelas, and encourages his family members to express themselves instead of bottling up their emotions. He loves his family and is willing to sacrifice his place in the family to protect his youngest niece, Mirabel. He sometimes confronts things that he is fearful of by taking on invented personas such as "Hernando," who is scared of nothing, or "Jorge", who makes the spackle.
Oh no! No! I’m way too scared to go near those things. Everything was done by Hernando? [As Hernando] I’m Hernando and I’m scared of nothing! [takes hood off] It’s actually me. I always say my gift was actually acting, hahaha… [with bucket on his head] I’m Jorge, I made the spackle.
Yeah, my gift wasn’t um… h-helping the family. But um… but I love my family, you know…? I just… I just don’t know how to um…
Knock-knock, knock-knock-knock, knock on wood!
