Duathfel: An Elder Scrolls V Expansion Mod

Project Overview

Duathfel is an upcoming mod for the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Story:

Far to the north, deep in the bedrock under the Sea of Ghosts, lies Duathfel.  Lost for centuries, it’s known only in vague tales passed down by the ship captains who frequent the waters nearby.  Most scholars consider Duathfel little more than myth, akin to our own legends of Atlantis... But to the captains who sail the Sea of Ghosts, Duathfel is real – real enough to avoid.  Something sleeps down there: something hidden, something dangerous.

Now, a determined band of scholars are preparing an expedition to Duathfel.  This team of explorers includes Katreen, a Nord metallurgist and blacksmith; Oolag, an expert at enchantments; Jeish-Ri, a demolitions expert; and Finrun, one of the premier authorities on alchemy.  Their leader – Alaxian-Tei – has devoted his life to the study of the Dwemer, and to rediscovering Duathfel.  Nothing will deter him until he has discovered every secret Duathfel offers.  Having heard of the player character’s many accomplishments, Alaxian has extended an offer of employment – inviting the player to join the expedition.

Objectives:

Rather than attempting to create hundreds of new NPCs, Duathfel (though still large in scale) focuses on a small group of adventurers.  The goal is for each member of the team to be a complete character, with his or her own personality, goals, hopes, fears, character development, and backstory.  Each main character will be integrally involved in the main series of quests, in addition to dedicated sidequests focusing on each of them.

We want each of these characters to feel like a real person, rather than a place-holder NPC who exists only to fill up space in the world or move a quest along.  To accomplish that, these characters will have custom greetings, idle chatter, and combat lines.

This approach means that each of the main characters will have hundreds – perhaps thousands – of individual lines to record.  We are asking all auditionees to appreciate that this will be a significant commitment should they be cast.  We're asking you to stick with us for the long haul.

Our short-term goal is to release a small snippet of Duathfel, the introductory section of the questline, as a teaser for the main mod.  This first release will introduce the player to each of the team members and begin their journey to Duathfel, ending just at the entrance to the city itself.

We are therefore looking for voice actors who can voice the main cast of characters in this prologue and then reprise their roles at a later date.  For the prologue, we only anticipate quest dialogue being needed. However, we plan to include idle lines, combat lines, reactions, and more quests in the full release. This would mean that future recording (over a longer time period) would have a much higher workload.

Latest Updates

  • Callbacks

Well, that was a busy few weeks! The team and I have now all gone through each and every one of the 440 auditions submitted and discussed which ones we think are best. There were a lot of really strong submissions, and as a result we haven’t been able to make a firm decision straight away. Because of the calibre of auditions we have decided that the best route forward is to hold callbacks for each character, open to a select number of the auditions that we felt had the best fit for the characters. These callbacks will be invite only, and I have reached out to contact all of those that we would like to invite. Unfortunately, this means that if you haven’t received a CCC message from me at this point you will not be invited to a callback and so on this occasion will not be cast. Do not let this dishearten you. It has been an extremely difficult process to decide who to invite for callback, culminating in a 4 hour long meeting of the team to work through all of our top picks and select auditionees from them. A lot of auditions missed out by very fine margins, and I encourage everyone to keep working hard at voice acting. Lastly, I’d once again like to say a huge thank you to the community for the response this casting call has gotten. I said in the last update that it was humbling to have received so many auditions and so much interest, and that is only more true after having gone through the auditions in detail. Thank you all again, and we look forward to sharing the mod with you when it is released.
  • Deadline Reached

Wow! I don't think any of us on the Duathfel team expected quite so many auditions over the last 6 weeks! To say we're overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of auditions is a bit of an understatement! Alas, the deadline has been reached and it's time for us to start the casting process. As of now, all the roles have been closed within the system. You'll see a message saying that all roles have been cast to offsite actors. THIS IS NOT TRUE. The roles have simply been closed so that new auditions can't be submitted now that the deadline has passed. The team and I will now spend the next few weeks going through the 440 (FOUR HUNDRED AND FOURTY!) auditions that you all submitted, filtering them down, and eventually finding the correct actor for each of our NPCs. Thank you all for your auditions and patience, we're still blown away by the response and it is not going to be easy picking just one person for each role. Best of luck, and thank you all again!

Alaxian-Tei (Argonian)

Alaxian is the leader of the group of explorers, and a scholar and linguist.  He has worked with every group member before, except for the player, and is gathering the group together for his expedition to Duathfel.  He is intelligent, well-read, and an expert on dead languages.  He is motivated chiefly by his hunger for knowledge.  Searching for Duathfel is his passion and life’s work.  There’s something incredible in those ruins – something he'd do anything to get his claws on.

Alaxian is an Argonian (a member of Skyrim’s lizard-like race), and should speak with a raspy voice, as if always slightly out of breath. Additionally, Alaxian is very well educated, and this should be represented in cadence and pronunciation.

  • Do give it a thorough read before you decide anything. You never know what somebody might try to slip past you, after all.

  • Well. If you must ruin the grandeur of the moment with such pedestrian matters as hypothermia, then – then I suppose you must. We carry on, then.

  • Atronach! To me!

[This is a combat line. Alaxian is in a fight that's becoming fairly desperate. Alaxian calls to the player character, referred to as Atronach, to come and aid him.]

Oolag (Orc)

Oolag is the team's magic expert, specializing in enchantments.  While she is an expert in her field, her methods are… unconventional, to say the least.  She is very headstrong and has a short temper: she’d just as soon fry someone with lightning as talk to them, if caught on the wrong day. She is motivated by both her research and excitement of the unknown. She is always pushing the limits of possibility – usually without fully thinking things through, and often to the detriment of herself or those around her.  Despite this, she is brilliant in her own way and has many magical discoveries to her credit.  She has her own distinct view of the world, and she rarely follows the crowd (in fashion or otherwise).

Oolag is an Orc, so her voice should be more gruff and gravelly.  She also has tusks, which could impact her speech.  Working the sound of this into her performance would be ideal but not required.

  • The magicka-threshold project. You know, where I trap part of your soul and then you shoot up with some skooma, so we can see if skooma makes your soul generate more magicka.

  • Yeah. Daedra are awful convenient, morally.

  • The only reason you're not bleeding is because you're a ghost. Now get dead, already!

Jeish-Ri (Khajiit)

cast offsite

Jeish-Ri is a demolitions expert and a recovering skooma addict.  When the team is faced with blocked corridors or impassable routes, Jeish-Ri knows how to make the way open again (usually involving loud bangs).  Jeish-Ri may not be as well educated as other members of the team but he is by no means inexperienced.  Jeish-Ri has the most combat experience out of all the expedition members... with the probable exception of the player.

Jeish-Ri is a Khajiit (a member of a feline race), and has a more Moroccan/Arabic/Spanish accent to his tone.  He frequently refers to himself in third person.  Occasionally, Jeish-Ri may be under the influence of Skooma and will have a more slurred speech pattern.

  • What does a stranger know of Jeish-ri, or what he deserves?

  • It is a troll. (spits) Foul.

  • Jeish-ri... Jeish-ri will skin you for this! (Growls)

Finrun (Bosmer)

Finrun is a wood elf and potions expert.  He has a keen interest in learning new things and dabbles in many areas.  His primary focus is alchemy, which he has studied extensively.  Finrun also has studied plant and animal biology, though primarily with a mind to their alchemical attributes. Finrun is kind-hearted, friendly, and outgoing.

Finrun should have a North American or British accent, and his voice should be gentle – not harsh or gravelly.

  • And this, my new friend, is what makes your arrival so marvelously auspicious.

  • Gods! You see the size of those bolts? I wouldn't want to get stuck with one of those...

  • What do you think we should do, Oolag? We're going to die in here, aren't we? No matter what!

Katreen (Nord)

cast offsite

Katreen is a Nord and an expert metallurgist.  She is also the team's blacksmith and supplies manager. She's joining the expedition to learn more about the Dwarven smiths and their techniques.  Katreen is quick-witted; however, her stubbornness can often get the better of her.

As a Nord, Katreen should ideally have a Nordic accent, but this is not absolutely required.

  • There's a vein of adamantine up there. Rarer than a bunny in the Deadlands, that stuff.

  • Finrun, this is the worst idea you've ever had .

  • But it's an intact Dwemer storeroom! Aren't we here to explore?

Skooma Dealer

cast offsite

This is a minor character used in an introductory quest and as such he has a minimal number of lines. The actor cast for this role will not be expected to make the long term commitment of the other characters, as all of their lines will be contained within the prologue to Duathfel.

A physically imposing, ruthless, and surprisingly articulate Nord criminal. Talks a good game, but breaks easily enough with the right incentives.

As a Nord, the Skooma Dealer should ideally have a Nordic accent, but this is not absolutely required.

  • A well-funded customer is better than a poor one, but a living and happy customer is better than a dead or angry one by a much greater margin. You're not worth the risk, my friend.

  • I beg your pardon? Skooma is illegal. You shouldn't let the guards hear you talking like that - and you shouldn't ask such rude questions, either, or you might find me reporting you.

  • So? Explain why I should care.
