SUMMARY

What happens when the worst private eye in the world and the best detective inspector at the SFPD team up?  

Everything going wrong.  In a good way.  

But hey, it's the 1940's so grab a sarsaparilla, kick back,  and enjoy!   

Detectives for Hire is an upbeat dramedy that follows the adventures of Dalton, an angry human Pomeranian who runs on soda and spite and Gino Rosetti, God's Italian gift to women and crime fighting. Together, they team up and go on the weirdest misadventures while learning how to be friends along the way.   If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes and character driven comedies, this story is for you! 

This is a two season audio drama with 12 episodes, each clocking in at 30 minutes.  Please keep that in mind as this is a project that will require you to be in this for the long haul! 

Season 1 is finished with six fully written episodes waiting for the right actors to breathe the story to life!

Definitely more of a mellow baritone: gentle, rich, and warm but conveys quiet authority.  He has a subdued melancholy and deep empathy for others.  In his well defined chest beats the heart of a poet. 

He is a lone introvert in a sea of high-maintenance extroverts.   May quite possibly be the only living person to receive the title of "saint" given his infinite patience and genuine love for even the most trying people.   

Understated and wise, he possesses hidden depths he keeps locked away from others and himself.  Fears losing control.    

32 years old but handles like 20.

Constantly exuding pheromones.  Can't shut it off.  

He's the senpai that will notice you.

The only thing better than his cooking is his thirst for justice.

Often the only sane man in a scene.

Has gravitas up the wazoo.

Husband material.  

  • Gino: Don’t worry, the bullet only nicked it.  Mind getting me some bandages and iodine from aisle 4?  You can get those cheese crackers you were eyeing while you’re at it.

  • Gino: It's alright, you're safe now.  I've got you, I've got you.  Can you stand?  There you go.  Lean on me, that's it. Hurry, I don't know how long they'll stay down.  

  • [GIno slams his fist on the table.  Everything rattles.  He breathes heavily through his nose, trying to keep his anger from taking over.  When he speaks again his voice trembles from cold fury.]

    Gino: My one chance to solve this case up and vanishes. I should’ve been more careful. Should’ve broken his legs to make sure he couldn't-

    [He catches himself. He blinks rapidly and straightens, registering his own words.]

    Gino: ah. No. No, that’s...I-I’m sorry. That was wrong of me to say something so...sorry. Forgive me, Lord. I just…

    [He sighs, scrubbing a hand across his face.]

    Gino: I need some air."

A lovable brat.  He's really energetic and aggressive but extremely weak and unlucky.  Has the confidence of a pomeranian facing off against a doberman with the same results.  

Secretly deeply insecure and full of self loathing.  Afraid of ending up alone.

Dramatic and hilarious.  Possesses absolutely zero social skills or tact.   

23 years old.  

Irritability is his default setting. 

Cute until he opens his mouth.  

Vulnerable and starved for affection.

Good at taking abuse.

  • Dalton:  No rush!  But when you could get to stopping me from getting cut in half that would be super!

  • He secures a bottle of booze, uncaps it, and takes a long swig.]


    Dalton: Hahh, nasty.  Why does it always taste like motor oil?  [takes another swig and coughs then sniffs.] Hah. [longer swig] He probably hates me now. [scoff]  Just like everyone else, eh? What else is new.  It’s not like…


    [Dalton’s voice is wobbly towards the end and he sniffs again.  He scrubs a hand across his eyes, wiping away tears.]


    Dalton: Stop it.  Stop it, you pathetic loser.  You should be used to it by now.  Someone like you...doesn’t even deserve friends…[sad laugh] who were you fooling all this time? 

  • Dalton: Stop being sarcastic!  That’s my thing!

    Gino: This isn’t about you!

    Dalton: Yes it is, you dumb slab of meat!  Don’t you get it?? You could've died!  I  almost lost...you...

    [He catches himself, surprised at the words that just fell out of his mouth.]

  • Emery: I!...I don’t know.  But I don’t think we’re getting the full story.  And anyway, he wouldn’t do something like that.  There has to be a reason he...did what he did. Don't you think so, officer Winterson?

    [The sheets rustle as Oswald puts his hands behind his head and breathes out a self-satisfied sigh.  He contemplates killing his next target thoughtfully.]

    Oswald: What a sweetheart.  He’s got good reflexes, even with a bad shoulder.  Getting the drop on him will be tricky but…[sigh] that alone should slow him down enough, I think.  It’s his dominant arm so that’s handy.  Ha!  English language humor.  I am so so funny.  Hmm. 

     Gi-no Ro-se-tti.  [Oswald says the name like he's savoring a candy] 

    You're strong and fast, handsome and kind.  Such a terrible, terrible waste.  Oh, well.  All good things must come to an end. [yawn] But first, a nap.  It’s so deliciously cloudy today.  Wait for me, little goose.  Wait for me.

CHARACTER CAN BE EITHER MALE OR FEMALE

36 years old with a glare that could melt the ice caps before global warming was a thing.

She/He's like a black panther. Intimidating, elegant, darkly charming, sardonic and unfriendly.  She/He has a dry sense of humor that often goes unnoticed.  Resourceful and blunt like getting stabbed in the face with an icicle.  

Just like a big cat, will only expend the energy necessary to accomplish a task.

If you're not helping her/him achieve a task, you're in the way.

Ruthless and calculating.


  • Pierce: [sharply] Don't tempt me with insubordination.  I'm not in the mood.  Now what exactly happened? 

  • Pierce: I wore down the Chief.  Eventually.  Between my powers of persuasion and the fact that we've got a mess on our hands, it was a compelling case for your early return.  That friend who tried to plug you last week?  Turns out he's a known hitman.  Cut his teeth in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Belorussia before making his way over here last year.  His notoriety precedes him but from what we know, you're his only surviving mark.

  • Pierce: My point is that your bleeding heart is clouding your vision, as usual, and you're too pig headed to see it.  My advice?  Cut your ties to the kid while you can. You'll only regret it otherwise.

She is a taxi cab driver on the autism spectrum who is an absolute delight.

25 years old, straightforward, open-hearted, whimsical, and cheerful.

Gets nervous and flustered easily but is has a protective nature.

Courageous and not afraid to call out bad behavior if it makes someone uncomfortable.

Clara is still figuring out what she wants out of life and hopes to learn more about people and the world through her job.

Has some great one-liners.  If you keep a quote book, she's the one you'll be quoting!   

Dreamy, warm-hearted, and a bit of a hopeless romantic.  

  • Clara: [giggle] Your friend is SUCH a character.  Will you be needing a ride back?  I can make my rounds in the area and pick you boys up when you’re finished!

If humans were pearls, it would be she.

The chief of the SFPD.  Calm, caring, and discerning.  Steady and quietly strong like the ocean waves cresting at noonday.

Anna is the kind of leader people would follow into the battlefield without question out of loyalty and love.

43 years old.  Probably has abs.

Totally a big sis type.  Inspires others to be the best versions of themselves.

Can get over being shot pretty quickly.  Her back is full of scars she's not embarrassed about.  

She and Gino have a will they won't they song and dance routine going on.  

  • Anna: As many of you know, we have the finest officers who daily put their lives on the line with courage and integrity.  I trust every single one of these brave men and women with my life and am proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with them everyday.

  • Anna:  Not at all.  You held your composure very well.  But I figured you might find it all a bit uncomfortable so I cut your interview short.  Did I do right by you, Rosetti?

  • Anna: *sigh* Gino...don’t make this more difficult than it needs to be.  The case is out of your hands now.  Pierce is filing away the paperwork.  It’s open shut.  I’m sorry.  Go home and try to forget about it.  We’ll see you in two months time.  Close the door on your way out.

What I imagine Amelia Earhart to be like.  

28 years old.  Has lived enough to fill five lifetimes.

Affable, down to earth, and brave.  Perceptive with a sharp wit and infinitely curious as an investigative journalist.

She's the kind of gal who's up for any kind of adventure.  A natural born leader who is much more easygoing than her stick in the mud brother.  

She's the cool girl in school who's got a good heart and wins over enemies with effortless charisma.  

The kind of person you wanna be best friends with.  Fun and loyal.

  • Octavia: [smirk] Brother dear, I know your life is endlessly exciting but I guarantee it’s nothing I haven’t heard before.

  • Octavia: No, I mean...except for you, it doesn’t seem like he wants anything to do with people.  He’s like a...a human porcupine.  Like a porcupine who signed up for a job at a balloon factory.  Why is that, you think?

  • Octavia: People, even the ones you look at and think, “How could anyone do something like that?”  Well, they make all kinds of decisions that make perfect sense to them.  They’re just like the rest of us: scared and looking to be loved.  Broken, and figuring it out along the way.  The only difference is sometimes they don’t have the right compass.

  • Narrator: [cheerfully] Previously!  Suspended detective inspector Gino Rosetti was attacked by a weirdo in his own home and stabbed.  However!  His churlish friend, private investigator Dalton, saved the day thanks to the invention of the gun.  Now they are in a hospital and it is the following morning...

  • Narrator: May 5th, 1943.  San Francisco Police Department.  Chief Inspector Anna Song's office.

  • Narrator: Approximately thirty one minutes later...
