DEAD SIGNAL [PILOT]

DEAD SIGNAL [PILOT]

Project Overview

DEAD SIGNAL is an original, character-driven audio thriller written by Hayden Cowdrey & Austin Adams set in a world devastated by a catastrophic biological outbreak. Ten years after the collapse of civilization, humanity struggles to survive among grotesque mutations, abandoned settlements, and the remnants of a society that could not contain the horrors it created.

The story follows Harry Walker, an exhausted and hardened survivor who has spent the last decade searching for his missing wife and son, Elliot. Once a member of the National Mutant Containment Authority (N.M.C.A.), Harry is now a wanted fugitive after turning against the very organization he once believed could help him find his family.

When a mysterious transmission emerges from a broken military radio, Harry hears a voice he thought he might never hear again.

His son's.

What follows is the beginning of a dangerous journey into the ruins of the old world, where forgotten secrets, disturbing encounters, and unexplained signals may reveal that the outbreak is far more complicated than anyone realizes.

  • “Ten years ago, the world began to change. At first, they called it an outbreak. A biological emergency. Something that could be contained, studied, and eventually cured. They were wrong. Cities fell. Governments fractured. Entire populations disappeared behind quarantine lines that would never open again. And somewhere among the ruins of everything humanity had built, something new began to grow.”

  • “The roads are still here. The houses are still standing. Sometimes, if the wind is quiet enough, you can almost imagine that nothing ever happened. But look a little closer. The trees are growing where they shouldn't. The walls are covered in things that weren't there yesterday. And sometimes, when the night gets quiet, you can hear something moving just beyond the light. The survivors have rules. Don't travel after dark. Don't approach the bodies. And if something out there starts calling your name...

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION

Harry Walker is an ordinary man who has spent the last ten years surviving an extraordinary nightmare. Before the outbreak, Harry was a husband and father. He had a wife he loved and a young son named Elliot. He wasn't a soldier, action hero, or particularly dangerous man. He was simply a father trying to protect his family. Everything changed the night the mutant outbreak reached his home. Harry watched his family disappear during the chaos and has spent the following ten years trying to find them. He has never received definitive proof that his wife and son are dead, and that uncertainty has consumed his entire life. Over the years, Harry became increasingly obsessed with finding answers. He eventually joined the National Mutant Containment Authority (N.M.C.A.), believing their military resources, classified records, biological research, satellite information, and missing-person databases could help him locate his family. Instead, the NMCA became another obstacle. Harry repeatedly violated orders, accessed restricted information, stole military equipment, and got into confrontations with his superiors. Eventually, the NMCA attempted to arrest him. Harry fought his way out and disappeared. He has spent the years since as a wanted outlaw, moving from settlement to settlement and surviving however he can.

WHO HARRY IS NOW

Ten years of isolation have changed Harry dramatically. He is gruff, stubborn, cynical, guarded, and emotionally unavailable. He rarely trusts anyone and almost never allows himself to become attached to people. He doesn't stay anywhere for long. He doesn't make friends. He doesn't tell strangers about his past. Harry's entire existence has become temporary. A backpack. A weapon. A map. A few supplies. And his search for Elliot. He has learned to survive by assuming everyone and everything around him is a potential threat. He is observant and highly resourceful. He knows how the NMCA operates because he used to work alongside them. He knows how mutants behave because he has spent years encountering them. He knows when to fight, when to run, and when staying completely silent is the difference between life and death. Harry isn't fearless. He's simply become very good at hiding his fear.

PERSONALITY

Harry should not sound like a stereotypical action hero. He isn't constantly angry or trying to sound intimidating. Most of the time, his emotions are buried underneath exhaustion. He speaks with purpose and doesn't waste words. He rarely explains himself. When someone threatens him, his response is often surprisingly calm because he has already experienced things far worse. His humor is extremely dry and occasionally sarcastic, particularly when dealing with authority. He can be arrogant when challenged, but it comes from years of surviving on his own rather than believing he's invincible.

THE IMPORTANT CONTRAST

The actor needs to be able to portray two versions of Harry.

Present-day Harry:

Cold. Tired. Hardened. Detached. When someone threatens him, his voice barely changes. He has learned to suppress his emotions because emotions make you vulnerable. But underneath that is— The old Harry. The loving father who jokes with his son. The husband who worries about his family. The man who still believes Elliot might be alive. That version of Harry hasn't disappeared. He's just buried underneath ten years of trauma.

VOCAL PERFORMANCE

Harry should have a rough, weathered voice, but avoid making him sound artificially gravelly. The voice should feel like a real person who has spent years sleeping outdoors, fighting, traveling, and rarely speaking. His quieter dialogue is often more effective than yelling. For example:

«HARRY: "How flattering."»

The line should be delivered almost casually after discovering that the NMCA still has his face plastered across settlement terminals. Another example:

«HARRY: "And you've never shown me a body."»

This should not be screamed. It should be cold. It's a man who has been told the same lie—or what he believes is a lie—for years.

EMOTIONAL RANGE

The actor should be comfortable portraying:

- Exhaustion

- Suspicion

- Sarcasm

- Anger

- Fear

- Grief

- Determination

- Paranoia

- Quiet affection

- Emotional numbness

- Sudden vulnerability

- Desperation

The most important ability is being able to transition from emotionally numb Harry to emotionally vulnerable Harry without making the change feel forced.

THE ELLIOT CONNECTION

Elliot is the most important person in Harry's life.Harry's entire identity has been shaped around finding him. Even after ten years, Harry still keeps an old photograph of his family and a recording of Elliot's voice. When Harry hears Elliot's voice through the radio for the first time in ten years, the hardened survivor immediately disappears. For a brief moment, Harry isn't a wanted outlaw. He isn't an experienced survivor. He isn't a fugitive.

He's just Elliot's dad. That moment should feel devastatingly genuine.

KEY PERFORMANCE MOMENT

One of Harry's most important lines is:

"Elliot?"

When he hears his son's voice through the radio, this should not sound like an action hero discovering a plot twist. It should sound like a man hearing the voice of someone he has spent ten years believing he may never see again. Confusion. Hope. Fear. Disbelief. Love. All at once.

OVERALL DIRECTION

Harry Walker should feel like a real human being who has been worn down by the end of the world, not a superhero surviving it. He's dangerous because he's experienced. He's stubborn because giving up would mean accepting that his family is gone. He's emotionally distant because caring has become painful. And despite everything the apocalypse has taken from him, Harry still refuses to stop looking for his son. That refusal is what keeps him human.

  • "People keep telling me to let it go.
    Ten years.
    That's what they say.
'It's been ten years, Harry. They're gone.'
Like ten years is some magic number.
Like one morning you wake up and suddenly you don't remember your son's voice anymore.
You don't remember what he looked like.
You don't remember the way he used to ask the same question five times because he already knew you were going to say no.
You don't remember any of it.
    That's what they think happens.
    It doesn't.
    I remember everything.
    Every fucking day.
And until somebody puts a body in front of me and tells me that's my son...
    I'm not stopping."

  • "You should've walked away when I gave you the chance."

  • "His name is Elliot.
    He's my son.
And I know what you're going to say.
You're going to tell me he's probably dead.
You're going to tell me I need to move on.
    I've heard it before.
    I've heard it from soldiers.
    Doctors.
    Survivors.
People who didn't even know him.
    But you know what?
    They weren't there.
They didn't hear him laughing in the back seat.
They didn't hear him asking when we were going home.
They didn't hear him say 'Dad' every five fucking minutes just because he knew I'd answer.
    I did.
    I heard all of it.
And if there's even a one percent chance that he's still out there...
    I'm going.
    I don't care where.
    I don't care what's waiting for me.
I don't care if I have to walk through hell to get there.
    He's my son.
    I'm coming for him."

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION

Elliot Walker is the young son of Harry Walker, a father who has spent ten years searching for him after a terrifying event tore their family apart.

Before the outbreak, Elliot was an ordinary child. Curious, affectionate, and occasionally impatient, he shared a close bond with his father. He asked questions, wanted reassurance, and trusted that his parents could protect him from anything the world might throw at them.

But the world changed.

During the initial outbreak, Elliot disappeared under mysterious circumstances. His fate remained unknown, leaving his father with unanswered questions and a desperate need to find him. Ten years later, a mysterious radio transmission carries a familiar voice through the static.

A voice Harry never expected to hear again. His son's.

Elliot's role in the story extends beyond that of a missing child. His connection to the outbreak and the creatures that now inhabit the world is central to the series' larger mystery. There is something unusual about him—something that makes him important to forces neither he nor his father fully understands.

  • “Are we almost home?” *casual*

  • “What's happening? What's wrong with Mom? You're scaring me!”
