Crime Boss Investigator - Major Roles Casting

Crime Boss Investigator - Major Roles Casting

Project Overview

Before we get started on auditions, there's a handful of crucial information you should know. Please read the following information carefully before auditioning. These are substantial roles with clear expectations and significant creative opportunity. We apologize if it's a lot, but hey, some of you seem to like our long in depth rants and explanations! These roles have massive benefits available for actors, like large exposure from a critically acclaimed story, and expansive demo reel content.

First and foremost, is this role paid? Unfortunately, the roles are unpaid, and we want to be upfront about that. We’re out of budget, we’ve already sunk the cash into production and promotion, so our compensation is doing our absolute best to maximize exposure and heavily credited placement in every release. We are sincerely sorry about the lack of pay. There is a possibility that if the show gains significant traction, we may recontact you for substantial deferred pay.

But, again, regardless of pay, all roles will be credited quite prominently across the show, trailers, and social, and all content you record can be placed in your demo reel materials.

As for workload: Vinny is a "lighter" role, but Sadie & Samuel are heavily recurring. This can take time across recording blocks, so please be transparent with availability before auditioning.

A QUICK NOTE FOR AN ISSUE I'VE COME ACROSS A FEW TIMES: If you've already acted or played a role in this series, PLEASE DO NOT AUDITION FOR THIS! We loved you guys and it's definitely heartwarming to see you guys have such a strong interest in the show AND you all did fantastic, but the voices might get repetitive so we want to avoid that.

Now, what is this show? Crime Boss Investigator is a dark, pulpy, violent crime-action about the titular protagonist, the Crime Boss Investigator, a morally messy antihero hunting the Stick Mafia while collateral damage piles up around him and comes back to bite him. Expect gunfights, brutal confrontations, intense emotional beats, and raw character work. Sadie is the heart/foil, Samuel is the volatile antagonist, and Vinny is the psychological snake in the grass.

As for our time expectations, Sadie & Samuel are heavily recurring; Sadie is in 5 episodes and Samuel is in all 8, though half of those episodes are just brief appearances. You can expect 2 sessions: For the first one, we kind of let you do your own thing and record as you're able with a lenient deadline, then you submit all lines on the deadline. After that, we review quality and give direction on redoes or added pickup lines (pickup lines are basically lines we add after animation is complete to patch plot holes or correct any mistakes we made), and give you another lenient deadline to submit those (and this is a fraction of the work of the original first session).

I'D ALSO PREFER YOU SEND IN AUDITIONS AS SOON AS YOU'RE AVAILABLE SINCE OUR SCHEDULE IS FALLING BEHIND AND WE NEED TO GET ACTORS QUICKLY!

As for takes, we expect most lines only need to be recorded in one pass; but emotionally heavy or complex lines should get three takes. We will cap the number of redo requests to keep the workload sane, that being: 10 total for Vinny, 3 per episode for Sadie, and 5 per episode for Samuel.

And behavioral wise, just be open to direction, cooperative, prompt for sessions, and just don't be rude/callous to other cast/crew. Professionalism is preferred but we openly welcome casual banter and love friendly interaction as long as things aren't stagnating! Don't feel pressured to be sociable if you don't want to though, just don't be rude is all basically.

As for contact, I prefer Discord for fast communication, but I can also do email for file sending and just use the CCC messaging system for standard communication, or you can suggest an alternative.

APPROXIMATE LINE COUNTS:

(These are approximate and based on the scripts we have; they’re meant to help you choose what best fits your time BUT are not 100% accurate.)

Vinny DeLuca — Roughly ~40–60 lines across the Episode he's in (only appears in Ep 4). Vinny’s scenes are concentrated and specific.

Sadie — approx. 120–160 lines, she’s recurring and present in many action/tender sequences. Pretty much the only REALLY Sadie heavy sequences will be Episodes 3, 7, and 8.

Samuel Blackwood — approx. 220–300 lines, enormous variety and recurring boss scenes, monologues, and long interactions. Episode 2 is in fact entirely focused on his backstory so that's where 70% of your workload resides.

Note: these are estimates based on the scripts. The show evolves and pickup lines may be added, but this should give you a good sense of expected workload.

Next, I'd like to provide context on what will be expected for auditions and actual recording. First off, here's what to expect for auditions:

For auditions, any file format is okay. Just ensure decent audio quality, we're mainly going to be gauging your emotional performance and may give a basic assessment on mic quality but it's not a final decision factor. Takes should be done in ABCABC (i.e., record your three passes in that order so we can compare takes quickly). That's all you need for now, don't worry. After that, the process will look like this:

1. Initial submission: You'll record and submit your ABCABC audition in any format. Include any demo reels you wanna submit (but totally optional) and where I can contact you (as mentioned, Discord preferred).

2. Top performers: If you nail the 3 hardest audition lines I'm attaching to CCC (they're intentionally the most complex to get the best of the best), you’ll be invited to the gauntlet: you'll privately perform 10 lines on your own time and submit (direction given over text) to truly test your emotional versatility and match to the role. From there, we pick the final 3 cast members.

3. Contract: Then, the final cast sign contracts before any credited usage (again, no monetary pay; contract protects rights, non disclosure, & usage; see below).

4. Official Recording: I'll then pass onto you the scripts, and for your convenience, what pages you have lines on. When submitting the final lines, please use this file format (not necessary for auditions): ROLE_YourName_EPNumber.wav. In light of this, ensure you separate dialogue by episode and ensure all dialogue for a single episode is under 1 .wav file (I've decided not to specify any highly technical specifications because it was asking too much for no pay; just use the best of your equipment and ability).

So, what can you expect from contracts? Signing a contract is mandatory. Contracts protect everybody’s time and rights because they:

• Secure the production’s right to use performances

• Guarantee no unauthorized AI voice usage on the actor’s performance or on the Producer's end

• Define re-takes / line redo policy

• Mandate and define crediting.

• Confirm credit placement and usage across trailers/social/demos.

Contracts will not pay money; they are rights use agreements and time protections. Additionally, they will specify non disclosure (no sharing scripts, details, or behind the scenes info until the show is released), guarantee your right to credit, define how many retakes I am restricted to giving you, and give me the right to use them.

With that, good luck everyone and thank you!

Role assigned to: Jessie Rogers

{Female / mid-20s-ish, warm & playful but can snap into serious, brave, and even vulnerable}

Sadie is the second protagonist, working alongside the titular Crime Boss Investigator. She's warm, playful, cheerful; youthful but tough. She needs believable tenderness and grounding in crisis, she’s the person who says a goofy line one beat and is screaming in terror the next.

A fair warning: Sadie does say "fuck" multiple times in an exclamatory way.

Anyone playing Sadie must give natural delivery, basically big emotional swings without sounding “performed.” You will need to be comfortable with physical sounding reads like breaths of fear or hesitance, grunts of pain as she sustains several injuries; some severe and some minor, and panic in moments where she feels outmatched. This role requires an actor who can sound like a real human under pressure, not a stage performance. The power is in the restraint more than anything. As a disclaimer, near the final minutes of the finale there is a brief, hesitant line where she says “I love you.” We don't want to hide that from people who aren't comfortable with it; but consider that it is a very impactful culmination of events with deep thematic ties, not a cheap romance gimmick scene, or milquetoast fan service.

This role is highly ideal for demo reel benefit, with strong emotional scenes & action reacts for reels. She is also likely the most heavily credited role and we expect her to be a highly admired, fan-adored character so expect heavy exposure and as an added benefit.

  • "What the hell is wrong with you!? The CBI I know would NOT have done that." She’s hurt. Disappointed. She believed in this person, and now she feels betrayed. The first sentence can have sharpness. The second sentence should land heavier, almost breaking slightly. It’s less “I hate you” and more “I thought you were better than this.” Even here, keep that underlying warmth in the tone. She never becomes cruel. “Would NOT have done that” should feel like it hurts her to say.

  • “Right. Well, you can drop the front. I'm cool!” Avoid sarcasm, or sounding smug. She’s inviting, not challenging. She’s gently teasing someone who keeps acting guarded. There’s a little flirt energy, but it’s soft, not bold or cocky.

  • “But... right now, is this really still for your family? Or did you just get... so lost in what you believed, that you tunnel visioned on it? You saved me. You saved people I didn't think could be saved. I said... I love you. Okay? I'm saying it now. I keep hesitating but... with how this is all going I have to say it now, I need you to hear it before I—before I might lose you for good! I don't know what the hell is gonna happen from here since we brewed a dozen more problems but I want to be with you during it all, okay?” You absolutely only need to do one take for this, don't worry, just make it your best. This monologue moves through six emotional shifts. We are intentionally using this full section to find actors who can transition naturally between them. Yes, it is long. Yes, that is the point. She’s not attacking, but rather sort of questioning. This should feel thoughtful, not accusatory. She cares deeply about this person. Fear creeps in here quietly at the realization that she could lose him. As previously stated, no, this isn't the setup to some cheap love-y gimmick, this is an extremely layered arc culmination. Only a fraction of her dialogue is anything like this. The emotional weight here exists because of everything that came before it. We are intentionally using this section to find performers who can handle that level of build-up and payoff.

Samuel Blackwood

Role assigned to: Matthew Ewald

Samuel is magnetic power with a brittle center. He commands rooms with a quiet cruelty, charms when it serves him, and detonates when everything he built starts slipping. He’s a strategist, an ego, and a man who thinks control is the only language that matters until it isn’t.

He's an absolute incarnate of vocal range:

• Charismatic leader

• Calculating strategist

• Cold manipulator

• Explosive when cornered

• Deeply wounded when his empire collapses

He can command a room with quiet confidence or unravel into feral desperation. He’s not a cartoon villain. He’s intelligent, emotionally layered, and prideful. When he breaks, it’s because something inside him snaps, absolutely not because he’s chaotic.

As mentioned earlier, Episode 2 has his whole upbringing all the way from age 17 to 30+, and he's in his mid 40's in the main series. During his younger scene you don't really need to change his voice that much, but if you can make it slightly lighter that's preferred (if you end up voicing him, those lines won't be found here). He has moments of rage, seductive manipulation of enemies, threatening anger, and much more.

This role is a scene stealer on reel material. It’s packed with moments directors notice. If you nail him, you’ll have plenty of showcase clips that casting directors remember.

  • "You're really trying to take me out? I thought my men would be smarter than that." He's mocking them, almost coldly laughing. You could even add a slight, brief chuckle between the 2 sentences. This line gets delivered through a controlling smirk.

  • "I DON'T GIVE A SHIT! Don't you get it?! Don't you understand?! This is more than just... SURVIVAL! My Mafia, my EMPIRE, is crumbling to the ground before my eyes, because of one OBSESSED FREAK! This fucking kingdom I built with my BLOOD, ripped from me in just DAYS! Shadowstrike was the last man I trusted. The only one who—who understood what we built. He was like a SON TO ME! And now he’s been butchered like a dog!" THIS is his emotional climax. If you can do this line, you're almost guaranteed a place in the shortlist. He's completely breaking down; the egotistical, murdering maniac who thought he controlled everything is slowly starting to realize he doesn't control a thing.

  • "Helping people’s a great thing... but it doesn’t pay the bills. And let’s be real, you’ve got a talent. Why not make it work for you?" This is that seductive manipulation talking. He's pressuring someone he's taken a keen interest in into joining his Mafia while it's still up and coming.

Vinny DeLuca

cast offsite

Vinny DeLuca is a charismatic, sadistic tactician hiding behind humor and charm. A low level affiliate turned personal nemesis, Vinny is not interested in power or survival, he is obsessed with psychological victory. He believes he understands the Crime Boss Investigator better than anyone else, and his greatest pleasure comes from forcing CBI to confront the truth about himself.

This role requires an actor who can dominate a two person scene, hold tension without raising their voice, and convey menace through stillness, timing, and subtext rather than volume. Fantastic demo reel content available.

  • "Hell of a reel, huh? Makes me wonder: how long before they start calling you the villain?" Just straight up mocking the guy. They just met and already he wants to tear him down and gloat while he does it.

  • "Ah-ah-ah, you can't touch me Investigator. Such an odd name might I add... you don't investigate anything, you just... kill." A true gut punch for the protagonist, who's angered at being so understood by Vinny. Spit that "Investigator..." out with pure spite and venom.

  • "Oh, you think I’m scared of you? I’ve seen the footage, remember? You’re not a hero, despite what this city thinks, and you know it. You’re a monster with a grudge, and that's all you care to be. And now? You’re afraid. That’s new for you, isn’t it? Fear? Only this isn't... traditional fear. I know you. You're not afraid of me, you're not afraid of gunfire, explosions, a public shaming... you're not even afraid to stare down the barrel of a gun. No-no... this fear is something more... personal, isn't it? You're afraid you wont get your revenge." Only one take required for this if you're short on time. But this one of the best lines he delivers, ripping apart the protagonist ruthlessly in this low, menacing tone.
