A Call From Beyond
Project Overview
A Call From Beyond is an upcoming Lovecraftian indie novel set in New Orleans that has comedic elements, which will be released early next year.
This project will be an audiobook version of said novel, with a duration of roughly 2 hours 30 to 3 hours.
It follows the tale of a down-on-his-luck widower Detective named Jerrick O'Toole. He says to many people (including himself) that he had gotten over the death of his wife, alas, his alcoholism makes it clear to everyone that this is not the case.
One day an older Russian Woman comes into his office with a bizarre case, she had seen her 15-year-old Daughter skipping on the bayou. The strange part is that she had gone missing 25 years ago.
After the previous curious encounter, he receives a call, a call from his wife, warning him not to pursue the case any further...

Jerrick O'Toole is a down-on-his-luck detective in his late 40's. Having become a widower 7 years ago.
With little luck in terms of clientele, his office will be foreclosed upon at the end of the month. He is an avid alcoholic, he seems to think his detective work is of higher quality when drunk out of his mind. What he lacks in terms of sensibility he makes up for in confidence.
He's great at selling his clients his services, but solving the crimes? Not so much.
He also has an unreasonable love for shrimp despite his deadly seafood allergy.
He should have a slightly raspy voice along with a confident composure.
A Boston accent would be preferred but we are very open to any accent.
- Boston
- slightly raspy
- male adult
- warm
I'm not sure any amount of money is gonna make me believe the things you're tellin' me. (Slight pause while someone places an amount of money he agrees with) I believe you wholeheartedly. When do I start?
(Loudly exclaiming, while exhausted and out of breath) You really (hyperventilating) flipped the shrimp (hyperventilating) this time O'Toole!
(Coughs violently) Shrimp, you deceptive temptress! (Gasps for breath) Oh! The irony of it all. Brought to my knees by my one true weakness (wheezes.) Krevet, if I live to see another day, remind me to steer clear of (gasps) seafood (gasps) and stick to solving crimes "
The narrator will speak every line not specifically said by a character, and will have by far the most lines.
They should have an aged voice, perhaps a senior.
The voice should be warm, soothing and relaxing to listen to.
This role can be played by any age or gender and can have any accent.
And as night fell upon New Orleans, so did many mysteries fall upon O'Toole's lap. An 8 armed ghostly figure, the reappearance of a missing russian girl, and most importantly, a call from his dead beloved.
Knowing what these creatures could do O'Toole ran as fast as his drunken stumble could carry him.
She smelled of vodka and perfume. While this combination would sicken most, it made O'Toole gravitate to her ever more slightly.
Madame Krevet is a slender and tall russian woman in her 50's, despite her age she looks late 30's at best.
She is wearing a large light brown fur coat with a gigantic pearl necklace. She also is wearing light blue high-heeled boots.
Her daughter had disappeared 24 years ago in Louisiana under very unnatural and mysterious circumstances.
Madame Krevet has a certain coldness both in her personality and in her eyes.
Madame Krevet should have a female sounding voice and a thick russian accent.
- female adult
- generic russian
- Cold
- slightly raspy
Mr O'Toole, My pearls may shine, but they hold no light to the darkness that consumes my heart.
A... Mr. Hashmi? Can't say I know the man, but Was there not a scandal regarding his hair?
I'm willing to partake in a deal with you. O'Toole should be dead by 3 pm tomorrow, Algernon.
Algernon is a small brown-haired 12-year-old British child whose parents sent him away for a better life, to give him the opportunities they could not have by him being in America. Essentially making him an orphan.
Eventually, he found his way, through hitchhiking, to New Orleans. He currently does odd jobs for people and most importantly is a close friend of Detective O'Toole. He often gives information to O'Toole, but often said information is hearsay and untruthful, alas O'Toole believes him anyway out of both pity and naivete.
His voice should be high-pitched and slightly shrilly, he must have a British accent. Please make him sound slightly annoying.
We would like him to be played by a female-sounding voice.
- british
- Shrilly
- female young adult
- Slightly annoying
(Yelling from across the street) Shoeshine! Shoeshine! Only 5 cents for both shoes!
Well, gee whizz Mr. O'Toole (pronounced Oh-Tool)! I've been sticking me head into gutters listening to the grapevine, and nothing about a "Ghostly Russian Girl with... 8 arms" has been said!
*Shrill Scream* (Slight Pause, he says the next lines yelling and exhausted) Since when were American Shrimp so big!?
Throughout the story, there will be multiple encounters with various monsters. We would like the audiobook to contain screams, screeches, and general monster roars.
This can be played by multiple people depending on the types of submissions received.
Can be played by both men and women, and any age.
- monster
(Snarl)
(Pterodactyl-like screech, AKA the scream that happens when you inhale)
(An agressive roar followed by a deathrattle screech which fades away.)
