Penny Creek Coal Mine is an abandoned coal mine located in Harlan County, Kentucky. The mine began development in the 1890s, and continued operation into the 20th century. The entire town is close-knit and embraces each other as a family. Its air is stained with melancholy and coal dust. The buildings all have a sad sag to them, but there is a hint of nostalgia buried somewhere. Everyone tells stories of the past, of why they can't move on, of how the pressure of the air is slowly suffocating them. Despite these conditions, they still embrace each other with love.

Lewis Groves used to be a miner in Penny Creek alongside his two brothers. He’s practical, down-to-earth, and levelheaded, looking after his town’s aging infrastructure as its sole handyman. Lewis isn’t a man of many words, instead opting to speak in a measured, precise, and unhurried manner. His speech is directed, and he considers his words carefully before he talks.
(casually reminding someone) Levi and I have an agreement: if he can trap the Sheepsquatch, I'll put him in contact with my brother.

She’s tough, rugged, and cynical with a no-nonsense attitude, but she cares deeply for her family and community. She’s a second-generation Hungarian immigrant and is fluent in both languages.

Prioska Kish, referred to by her neighbors as Ms. Priscilla, is a Hungarian immigrant who came to America in the 1920s and settled in the coal camps of Kentucky. She is in her nineties, slowly passing away, partially paralyzed from a stroke, and struggles to speak.

Earl Johnson is the loveable papa bear of Penny Creek. He travelled from Georgia to Kentucky to work in the mines, and refused to leave after his brothers died there. Earl is a gentle giant, a comforting presence, and deeply loved by his neighbors — but deep down, he holds a tremendous amount of grief, loss, and sadness.
(informing, proposing dinner) You know, Ivett is cookin' supper tonight, she know plenty 'bout that Sheepsquatch.
(laughing/joking, telling a silly story) And when he came outta that water, he had a big ol’ pump knot the size of a peach right on top his brow!
