BLACK RAIN: Villains

Project Overview

BLACK RAIN — Animatic Series Casting CallProject Overview

Black Rain is an independent, non-union, story-driven animatic series inspired by the presentation style of the musical storytelling format seen in EPIC: The Musical, utilizing illustrated animatics rather than full animation.

Black Rain: Origins follows Oliver, a former soldier turned mechanic, living a quiet life with his partner Rein after a brutal war left him reliant on advanced prosthetic limbs. Their peaceful routine is shattered when Rein is killed during a catastrophic gang conflict involving illegal plasma weaponry.

Consumed by grief and guilt, Oliver isolates himself until his former comrade Samuel pushes him toward action. Determined to uncover the truth and seek justice, Oliver descends into the city’s criminal underworld, acquiring dangerous black-market upgrades and adopting the vigilante identity “Black Rain.”

As he tracks those responsible—from low-level gang members to a mechanic known as Tex—Oliver discovers the attack was connected to something far larger. A powerful organization known as the Syndicate, armed with advanced plasma technology, emerges as the true threat.

Forced into uneasy alliances with former enemies, Oliver begins transforming from grieving survivor into relentless vigilante, setting the stage for a larger conflict against the Syndicate and the conspiracy surrounding Rein’s death.

Black Rain is a story about loss, love, revenge, and rebuilding yourself—both physically and emotionally.

REESE — AUDITIONING GUIDE (CASTING CALL CLUB)

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Reese is a calm, highly intelligent rogue scientist and the main antagonist of the story. He speaks with precision and emotional restraint, but there is always something slightly unstable underneath his control. He believes emotion is a flaw in human decision-making and that control is the only path to progress.

He is not loud or expressive. His intimidation comes from how controlled he is, not aggression.

VOICE DIRECTION

  • Calm, measured delivery

  • Slightly lower tone, controlled and deliberate

  • Emotionally restrained, but not robotic

  • Subtle tension under calm speech

  • Never “shouting villain” energy

KEY PERFORMANCE NOTE

Reese should always feel like he is holding himself back from reacting emotionally. The audience should sense pressure beneath his control, even when his voice is steady.

AUDITION LINES

LINE 1 (INTRO / CONTROL)“Emotion creates instability. Instability creates failure. I simply remove the variables that others refuse to acknowledge.”

LINE 2 (IDEOLOGY / CONFLICT)“They call it cruelty when systems are corrected. I call it necessary adjustment. The difference is perspective.”

LINE 3 (OLIVER TENSION MOMENT)“You are not unpredictable because you are strong. You are unpredictable because you refuse to think correctly.”

ACTING FOCUS FOR AUDITION

  • Stay controlled throughout all lines

  • Let intensity build internally, not loudly

  • Do not become emotional, even in “breaking” line

  • Focus on precision and restraint

  • Small changes in pacing matter more than volume

FINAL NOTE

Reese is not a loud antagonist. He is a controlled one. The danger should feel like it is under the surface, not exploding outward.

ATHENA — AUDITIONING GUIDE (CASTING CALL CLUB)

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Athena is a 25-year-old intern scientist with high intelligence and strong emotional attachment patterns. She is driven by usefulness and validation, believing her worth comes from being needed by others, especially Reese.

She is not loud or chaotic. Her intensity comes from emotional dependency beneath a functional, helpful exterior.

Core belief:

“If I am not useful, I will be forgotten.”

She does not recognize this as unhealthy — it is simply how she understands relationships.

VOICE DIRECTION

  • Soft, natural tone with emotional warmth

  • Slightly tired baseline energy

  •  Emotionally expressive but controlled

  • Subtle anxiety under calm delivery

  • Becomes more animated when trying to help or gain approval

  •  Never overly dramatic or theatrical

KEY PERFORMANCE NOTE

Athena should always feel like she is adjusting herself emotionally in real time to stay valuable. Even in calm moments, there is a sense of underlying uncertainty.

Her emotion should feel real, but unstable beneath function.

AUDITION LINES

LINE 1 (INTRO / IDENTITY) “I just think… if I can be useful, then I can actually matter to someone. That’s how it works, right?”

LINE 2 (REESE ADMIRATION / ANCHOR) “He doesn’t waste words. Everything he says has weight. It makes things feel… clear. Like I’m not guessing anymore.”

LINE 3 (REPLACEMENT FEAR / INTERNAL TRUTH) “I just need to do better. If I’m needed, then I won’t be replaced… that’s all I have to do.”

ACTING FOCUS FOR AUDITION

  • Stay grounded and natural throughout all lines

  •  Let emotion build internally, not loudly

  • Pacing shifts matter more than volume changes

  •  Anxiety should sit underneath the voice, not override it

  •  Warmth should feel genuine, not performed

  •  Avoid melodrama — this is quiet emotional dependency

FINAL NOTE

Athena is not a loud or dramatic character. She is emotionally driven through usefulness, attachment, and quiet fear of replacement.

The danger of her character is not instability in expression — it is:

how stable she appears while emotionally restructuring herself around other people.

WAYNE — AUDITIONING GUIDE (CASTING CALL CLUB)

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Wayne is a 41-year-old Axion scientist driven entirely by curiosity and experimental excitement. He is highly intelligent, extremely expressive, and socially active, but communicates in a chaotic, fast-moving way that often becomes incoherent.

He does not view risk or consequences emotionally. To him, outcomes are data states, not moral outcomes.

He is not evil or intentional in harm — he is detached from consequence evaluation.

VOICE DIRECTION

  • Fast, energetic delivery

  • Highly expressive and animated tone

  • Frequent pacing shifts as ideas form mid-sentence

  • Sounds excited rather than emotional

  • Unstructured but intelligent speech flow

  • Never calm or measured

KEY PERFORMANCE NOTE

Wayne should always feel like his thoughts are moving faster than his ability to explain them. He is not trying to be confusing — he simply cannot slow his thinking down.

Dangerous ideas should be delivered with excitement, not concern.

AUDITION LINES

LINE 1 (INTRO / CURIOSITY DRIVE)“I mean, it shouldn’t work—but that’s exactly why we try it. If it fails, that’s still progress.”

LINE 2 (EXPERIMENTATION / RISK DISREGARD)“No, don’t slow it down yet—we need to see what happens when it’s completely unrestrained first.”

LINE 3 (INCOHERENT EXCITEMENT / THOUGHT OVERFLOW)“I haven’t slept in a while but that might actually be helping because I saw three different outcomes and they all kind of made sense at the same time—”

ACTING FOCUS FOR AUDITION

  • Maintain high energy throughout

  • Prioritize excitement over clarity

  • Let thoughts overlap and break naturally

  • Do not slow down for emotional weight

  • Treat dangerous concepts like interesting discoveries

FINAL NOTE

Wayne is not a traditional antagonist or “mad scientist.”

He is:

a curiosity-driven experimental mind whose excitement overrides consequence evaluation, resulting in brilliant but chaotic communication and dangerously uninhibited scientific exploration.

UNIT A1 — AUDITIONING GUIDE (CASTING CALL CLUB)

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Unit A1 is a cold, heavily augmented Axion operative whose body has been altered through extreme experimentation involving unstable plasma technology.

He appears detached, controlled, and emotionally distant, but beneath that control is constant pain, instability, and fragments of something human still struggling underneath.

He is powerful, dangerous, and slowly deteriorating.

VOICE DIRECTION

  • Deep, restrained delivery

  • Cold and emotionally distant baseline tone

  • Speech should feel controlled but unnatural at times

  • Emotion leaks through subtly under pressure

  • Avoid fully robotic delivery

  • Rage should feel suppressed rather than explosive

KEY PERFORMANCE NOTE

A1 should feel like someone forcing themselves to remain controlled while something unstable is constantly breaking underneath the surface.

Even calm lines should carry weight and exhaustion.

AUDITION LINES

LINE 1 (INTRO / DETACHED STATE)“…Directive acknowledged.”

LINE 2 (THREAT / CONTROLLED RAGE)“You should have left when you still had the choice.”

LINE 3 (HUMANITY LEAK / FRAGMENTED MEMORY)“…Why does that name feel familiar…?”

ACTING FOCUS FOR AUDITION

  • Keep delivery restrained and grounded

  • Emotion should stay buried beneath control

  • Use subtle instability instead of loud anger

  • Small vocal shifts matter more than volume

  • Avoid sounding fully robotic or monotone

LEO — AUDITIONING GUIDE (CASTING CALL CLUB)

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Leo is a 23-year-old scientist and the newest member of Reese’s group. He joined because Reese’s intelligence and certainty made the world feel understandable in a way it never had before.

Leo is thoughtful, empathetic, and morally sensitive, but struggles heavily with self-doubt and confrontation. The deeper he becomes involved with Reese’s work, the more he begins questioning whether what they are doing is truly right.

His core fear is:

becoming the bad guy while trying not to disappoint people.

VOICE DIRECTION

  • Soft, grounded, natural delivery

  • thoughtful and emotionally sincere

  • Slight hesitation when under pressure

  • Not weak, but uncertain

  • Emotion should feel internalized rather than dramatic

  • Avoid overacting or excessive nervousness

KEY PERFORMANCE NOTE

When pressured, he tends to freeze, apologize, or struggle to fully defend himself.

AUDITION LINES

LINE 1 (INTRO / ADMIRATION OF REESE)“When Reese talks, it feels like he already understands things everyone else is still trying to figure out.”

LINE 2 (MORAL DISCOMFORT / INTERNAL CONFLICT)“I know there has to be a reason for this… I just—I don’t know if I understand it anymore.”

LINE 3 (PRESSURED / DEFENSIVE APOLOGY)“No, I’m not saying you’re wrong, I just… maybe we should slow down before somebody gets hurt.”

ACTING FOCUS FOR AUDITION

  • Keep delivery grounded and emotionally real

  • Let hesitation naturally affect pacing

  • Avoid sounding overly confident

  • Emotion should build inward, not outward

  • Small vocal shifts matter more than volume

  • Focus on sincerity and internal conflict

FINAL NOTE

Leo is not weak or cowardly.

He is:

someone trying to hold onto his morality while surrounded by people who seem far more certain than he is.

His emotional conflict should feel deeply human, not dramatic.
