Project Overview

INTRODUCTION

Hello there!  This is a casting call for a brand new audio fiction podcast I've started writing called Audio of the Arcane.  This series will be an anthology series listening to the recordings of those who dare to explore the magical aspects that hide in real life.  This first season is titled "Breanna's Haven."  The plan is to have 38 main episodes (about 20-30 minutes each...hopefully) with the possibility of mini/bonus episodes, depending on how the podcast goes.

I have the first two episodes in drafting stages, which is why I'll only be casting for the first two.  There will be many, many new characters coming later on, so be sure to check in and see.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

This first season follows Tamsin and Lena, two best friends (practically sisters) who are travelling to the aforementioned Breanna's Haven?  Why?  Well, Tamsin has received a postcard from Breanna's Haven that reads as follows:

If you wish to know where you came from, arrive at Breanna’s Haven before August One

Tamsin, having no idea as to who her parents are or what her parents are, has decided to take a risk and go to Breanna's Haven, hoping to get the answers she desperately wants.  With Lena tagging along, having her own questions, the two of them arrive at Breanna's Haven.  But what happens when they get there?  Guess you'll have to listen to find out!

DEADLINES AND AUDITIONS

The deadline is October 15th.  This may or may not be extended depending on how many applicants apply.  However, no one will be cast until the final deadline has been met.

I'm looking for voice actors and an audio engineer/sound designer, as well as podcast cover art and possibly a short theme tune for the podcast.  I encourage anyone who is interested to apply, whether you have all the experience or are just beginning; this is my first dive into podcast writing, so I totally understand.

This is a paid project.  That being said, as I am not making money on this at this point, my rates may seem quite low, and I apologize for that.  However, this being my personal project, I do want to be able to pay you those who are willing to work on it as much as I can muster.  For the voice actors, the rate is $0.50 per line of dialogue used in the podcast (the roles listed just have estimates per episode).  For the audio engineer/sound designer, the rate is up to $50 per episode (and I will do everything in my power to make it as easy for you as possible).  With regard to the podcast art and theme music, I'll be looking for quotes, so please include those in your audition.

Once the first episode is live, I'll start a Patreon or something like that in hopes of getting money to pay you all the rates you deserve.

WHAT TO EXPECT

I will be creating a Discord server for this project at some point, so it is imperative to have a Discord.

Additionally, this project will be paid, which will be done through PayPal.  However, if the majority of applicants have a different preference, I'll see what I can do.  PayPal is just the easiest for me, but I will bend if required.

WHAT I'M ASKING OF YOU


  • The most important thing is to have fun with it!  In fact, I encourage ad-libbing and taking creative liberties where you think it might be fit.  At the end of the day, this will be a team effort, so why not bring your ideas to the table?

  • This isn't a NSFW podcast by any means, but please be at least 18 years of age or older if you apply.  The main cast starts at that age and with all the swearing, violence, adult themes, and possible spiciness that make take place, I'd prefer not to have younger applicants for this project.

  • This is a LGBTQIA+ friendly podcast; most of the characters are queer in one way or another.  If that's not your cup of tea, please don't audition.

  • I'm not asking for the recordings to be perfect, but minimal noise in the background is a must (no air conditioners, fans, etc.).

  • Audition for as many characters are you like.  I don't have specific voices in mind for these characters, which is where you come along.  You may not think it, but your voice may be the one for a certain character.  I won't know until I hear it!

  • Please have at least three takes of each line (AAABBBCCC) when you audio for a role.  This will give me a better grasp of your range and the different emotions you convey each line with.  Of course, you can have more than three takes if you life.

  • This will be a long-term project, so only audition if you are willing to stick around and see this through, especially when applying for a main character.

  • If you don't get a role, don't worry!  This is only casting for the first two episodes.  I promise, there are many more characters just waiting for voices, so don't get discouraged.

  • ...and that's deadline!

    Hello there! Wow! Allow me to get a little mushy here for a moment. I started this project on a whim and, like most of my projects, I just assumed I would write a little, become uninspired, and then drop it to try and find the next best thing. So, when I decided to just push myself and post the casting call on here, I thought that maybe I'd get a few auditions. BUT...that's not what happened. Just seeing all the submissions come in day by day truly inspired me to keep writing and working on this project that has garnered so much interest from all of you. I am truly blown away by this. So, thanks to all of you! You are all so truly wonderful! Now, with the deadline being up, it's going to take some time for me to carefully go through everyone's submission...and then having to make a choice on top of that. Having to work this weekend unfortunately, and then working that 9-5 (10-6 in my case) next week, the earliest I can promise to start casting is Wednesday, with the following weekend hopefully getting everyone cast, if not the latest being the following week (Halloween weekend). So please be patient with me. There are just so many incredible submissions that I know I have my work cut out for me. And, if you don't get cast but still have interest in this project, let me tell you...there will be more parts to come. I've planned on 38 episodes, so there will be a lot more characters that come into play. So be on the look out for the next casting call for this podcast. You all are truly incredibly talented!   • Character Change

    Hello there! As I spent the day writing scripts for this very project (currently starting on episode four...woo!), I had to make some character changes. One of these changes is for the character Otto, a character that I had said in an update “is important to me, and I don't want to compromise who he is if I can help it.” Well, as some of you may know, when writing, edits and changes are par for the course, which is what happened to me today while I was writing and, for story reasons, Otto’s gender identity is now being swapped with another character that will appear later in the series (a cool character I might add!). What does this mean? It just means that Otto’s character will sort of now be Sonny/Sunny (not sold on which way to spell it yet). He will still have his same personality as the nerdy and neurotic of the group, but he won’t be a gay trans man but instead a bi/pansexual man. I’m sorry that this happened, and I hope to do better as the series progresses! So, with that being said, I will be closing Otto’s audition (it will look like it was cast to an offsite actor, but it’s not) and creating a brand new audition for Sonny/Sunny. If you have auditioned for other parts and would like to audition for him as well, please do! Hopefully this will be the last update until the 15th! Keep being awesome, everyone!

  • Deadline Update!

    Hello there! As September 30th is slowly encroaching upon us, I realized that the beginning of October for me is going to be very busy. Because of this, I'm extending the deadline of the project to October 15th, when I should be hopefully be not as busy and able to make casting decisions. Additionally, I changed the bartender's name from Gus to Ernest, because I wasn't 100% sold on his name...and I'm just plain terrible at naming my characters! Oh well... And lastly, I just want to say "WOW!" These auditions are so incredible! You all are amazing individual! :)

  • Week Two Update!

    Wow, let me just start by saying how incredible all of you are! I am simply blown away by all of your auditions! Like, truly, you all are fantastic human beings! :) All VA roles but one have at least a couple auditions, which I never thought would happen. Just people auditioning for this in general has me in awe. That being said, if you know anyone who would be a great fit to audition for Otto, please direct them to this project. Because Otto is a trans character, I would strongly want someone who identifies the same to audition. Like all of my characters, Otto is important to me, and I don't want to compromise who he is if I can help it. Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and I can't wait to see how this project goes!

  • Almost One Week Update!

Tamsin is one of the main characters.  After receiving a postcard from Breanna's Haven promising to tell her where she came from, she make the journey halfway across the country to try and find the answers she's been seeking most of her life.  Oh yeah, she can also grow dragonfly-like wings from her back because she's half fairy.  She has a habit of vaping a lot.

Tamsin just oozes with sarcasm and thinks she's oh so witty.  She's also just kind of mean, which can make her an unlikeable person.  Despite all this, she cares about Lena and will do anything to project her, even if it means risking herself.


  • "Exactly.  That’s why this handy dandy recorder is gonna listen to everything we say and will be the key witness to what may or may not happen to us once we get there.  Unless of course it falls into the wrong hands...or gets destroyed...or both."

  • "Listen, I’m a simple smoker.  I see a smoke shop that’s still open at this hour, I must check out its wares.  Besides, my little girl is almost on her last puff."

Lena is one of the main characters.  After Tamsin receives a postcard from Breanna's Haven, Lena decides to tag along and go with her.  When scared or angry, her hands turn to wolf claws...or more like werewolf claws, because she's half werewolf.  Also, she's a bit of a romantic and loves romance YA books.

Lena is just a sweetheart and the optimist between her and Tamsin.  She is so kind and friendly to everyone, even when they don't necessarily deserve it.  At the end of the day, she just wants to see the good in everyone, even if that puts her in tough situations.

[Because Lena is a good singer, applicants must be able to sing.]

  • [Dreamily] "Breanna’s Haven...the name just sounds so whimsical.  It reminds me of the small town in my favorite YA romance...Touched by a Fang."

Destiny Williams is the descendant of Breanna Williams and is better known as "The Girl with Gold Eyes".  She is the heroine of Breanna's Haven.  She can pull a sword from her damn thigh!  How cool is that?  She likes sword fighting and tending to her plants.

Destiny works with a sense of duty, being the protector of Breanna's Haven.  Sure, she sounds and acts like she's kind and thoughtful, but it's mask for her frustrations and irritations with everyone around her, and you can hear it start to crumble.  The strain is weighing on her, and soon she's going to snap.

  • "As someone who doesn’t have children, I can’t say that I do, but five kids is surely a handful."  BEAT  "Well, I would love to catch up more, Gus, but you called about a fight breaking out?"

  • [Seriously] "If you don’t want this blade to go right through your head, I suggest you get off of her."

Wyatt is the familiar (assistant) to the Camilla Drake, the leader of the Clan of Night.  He's a nervous character, talking with a stutter whenever he gets nervous.  At the end of the day, he's just trying to do his job?  But why does he work for Camilla?  Guess we'll find out sometime.

  • [Quietly] "That was easy."

  • "I-I-I’m supposed to be-be-be delivering the f-f-first challenge.  On be-be-behalf of the leader of th-th-the Clan of N-N-Night.  T-T-The one and only--"

  • "Th-Th-The C-C-Countess wanted me t-t-to leave the m-m-message somewhere using bl-bl-blood.  That’s why I-I-I have m-m-my bag."
