Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal Fandub: Yuma Vs. Shark I
Project Overview
Introductions
Hello! My name is FullAsianJay, and my co-director is KonoDeanoDa, but you can call us Jay and Dean respectively. We're two friends, who decided to try our hands at fandubbing scenes from different anime that we've enjoyed over the years, didn't receive a dub (yet), or wasn't all that fulfilling in English, given the type of scene that it was (These types of scenes we refer to are typically one's that had dialogue heavily altered, due to censorship). We look forward to hearing the talent from all the wonderful people, who audition! Remember, everyone, to have fun with these auditions! You can do it!
Brief Series (Also Scene) Summary
Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal is the sixth spin-off of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series. The story centers around Yuma Tsukumo, a young boy, who enjoys playing duel monsters but plays the game with skills lower than an amateur. One day, his best friend, Tetsuo Takeda, winds up losing to the bully of their school, Ryoga Kamishiro [Shark], who ends up taking his deck per their pre-duel agreement. This causes Yuma to challenge Shark to a duel, with his own deck and Tetsuo's on the line, despite the fact that Yuma is extremely bad at the game. During the duel, Yuma encounters The Door through a vision that negotiates a deal with him for unfathomable power. Because of this, a mysterious entity named Astral, who has lost his memories, appears before Yuma. In order to regain his memories, Astral and Yuma will need to collect all ninety-nine Number cards, which hold not just Astral's memories but a great power as well. Thus an entirely new bond is forged between the two.
Rules and Clarifications
Be sure to have decent microphone quality!
A helpful tip would be to take your microphone and computer to a secluded area, where it is compact with little to no background echo. This is to ensure audio effects that will be edited in post won’t sound out of field compared to the rest of the cast.
While the “Voice Description” tab may describe the general idea of what the character’s voice should sound like, that is only there to help the actor gain an understanding of the possible voice for that character. If you have another portrayal for that character’s voice in mind, then by all means, send it in! We may even like it better than what we originally wanted!
In regards to that last bullet, (This is probably obvious to some, and I apologize for redundancy) you can audition for as many roles as you want!
If you don’t get a part, don’t feel bad! We will take into consideration everybody that auditions! A person, who doesn’t make the cut, might just be contacted to audition for a character specifically or even asked to voice that character automatically (if they would like to)!
You DO NOT need to possess prior knowledge of any of the shows that these fandubs originate from!
Role Assignment
- Some characters, within this fandub, will appear in scenes from the series in the future. So once a role has been assigned to somebody, then they’re casted as that character for ALL the fandubs the character appears in, unless the actor is unavailable or says otherwise.
Line Recording Process
- Discord is necessary for the line reading process to flow smoothly.
We would prefer if the person reading the lines would have their Discord on the same computer that their mic setup resides.
This is so the actor can perform the lines live with Dean and I in the call, to get instant feedback and better direction.
For this, we will try to schedule a desired date and time for Dean and I to get into a call with the actor that works with everybody’s schedule!
If the actor doesn’t feel comfortable in a live call, then that is perfectly okay! They can just send in their lines through files and recordings! We just wanted to do the live call to provide less hassle for the actor, just in case we’d like the actor to reread their lines again or say the line in a specific way.
- A specific script will also be sent to the actor for their assigned character, with a more organized script, side comments for lines, etc.
Along with this, edited footage of whenever the actor’s character speaks will be provided. That way it’ll be a bit easier to match the lip flaps.

Hey, everyone! Dean and I just wanted to thank everyone for auditioning for this project! We heard a lot of great talent from many people! This was definitely something to enjoy for our first type of CCC project! That being said, we managed to decide on the voices we wanted for all the characters aside from Astral and Tetsuo! To those that were selected, congratulations! Make sure to check your messages, because I'll be arranging things for Discord and scripts sometime soon! To those that weren't selected, don't feel down! We've heard everyone's voices and we're keeping you all in mind for future projects. Be sure to keep an eye out for more Casting Calls from us soon! Thanks again, everyone!
Character Description: Yuma is an energetic boy, who believes in himself and isn’t afraid to take on a challenge, even if he isn’t particularly good at it. This leads him to getting into trouble with Shark, as he winds up challenging him to a duel, knowing that his own chances are slim. Despite all this, Yuma is willing to put his own deck on the line to fight for Tetsuo, which causes the Door inside his Pendant to summon him, choosing him to be Astral’s partner.
Voice Description: Given the fact that he’s still at the middle school age, he will most likely have a higher pitched voice, like he’s in the process of going through puberty. Yuma is extremely optimistic and naive, so the higher pitched voice works. If there is a decision for another Zexal fandub again, then the voice actor must be able to keep the same voice but alter it from higher to a bit deeper. The deepness of his voice signifies his growth, since over the series Yuma does mature, and there are definitely scenes later in the series that we'd love to do with Yuma.
Astral has just appeared before Yuma; however, the only person, who can see Astral, is Yuma. His friends keep asking who he's talking to and thinking that he's lost his mind, which frustrates the boy.
"Wait, you mean you guys can't see this dude right here? The floating guy? Right here! *Becomes more frantic with his attempts to convince his friends.* He's right HERE! Can't you see him?! It's hard to miss him, when he's RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! I know you both have eyes, so use them and look a little harder- Oh for crying out loud!"
Yuma is on the receiving end of the duel, which prompts Shark to berate the boy, insulting him and mentioning how worthless and dependent on people he is.
"Oh just shut up! I’m nothing like that, at all! No matter how many times I fail. No matter how many times I’m laughed at. I always brought it to em’, and that will never change! Because I am who I am, and I’ll keep bringing it to em’! I haven’t given up yet, Shark, and I never will!"
Yuma relies on his last draw, which will decide the outcome of his duel with Shark. Upon his Draw Phase, Yuma finds hope in the card and makes his final attack.
"I attack with Number 39: Utopia! Go, Utopia! Attack Leviathan Dragon! I then activate Utopia's effect! By detaching one Overlay Unit, I negate Utopia's attack!"
Shark is baffled about Yuma's sudden strategy and asks if there's a point to a hopeless move.
"There's a point alright! I'm activating the Quick-Play Spell Card, Double or Nothing, to finish you! When my monster's attack is negated, this card double's my monster's Attack Points and allows it to attack again! Let's bring it to em', Utopia! Attack Leviathan Dragon!"
Character Description: Shark is quite an arrogant guy. Basically he’s the bully of the school, who uses trading cards to do his bidding. His character undergoes quite a lot later down the road, but for the given scenes in the beginning of the series, he remains as this arrogant, tough guy. For this duel though, he becomes possessed by the “Numbers”, which increases his aggression and his rude behavior.
Voice Description: Shark comes off as older than Yuma, despite being the same age. His voice will be deeper but not too deep. Kind of like a regular guy, except there will be hints of arrogance. This tone doesn’t remain throughout the majority of this series, in fact, his cockiness ends up fading away after the first two episodes. That being said, Shark does undergo a lot of character development and arcs, some of which deal with anger, the pain of loss, and despair. If there ever is a decision to do a Zexal fandub again in the future, then the voice actor must be prepared to portray these emotions, if the specific scene requires it.
Shark is assured of his victory and proceeds to berate Yuma for his belief that he could've actually won the duel.
"What’s wrong?! Did you actually believe that you had a chance at becoming Duel Champion with THOSE pathetic skills? It’s all because you placed your faith in that stupid key that you can’t win a duel!"
Yuma retorts with a "You wanna say that again?!"
"I think you heard me right! And how about, after I steal your deck, I take that key of yours and shatter it right in front of your face?!"
After summoning out a supposedly weak monster, Shark manages to turn the tables around quickly, ruining Yuma's moment of celebration.
"Don’t get cocky, just yet! I’m activating Skull Kraken’s Monster Effect! When Skull Kraken is successfully summoned, I can target one Spell or Trap Card on my opponent’s field and destroy it! Say goodbye to your Wonder Wand!"
(Director's Note: "Xyz" is pronounced "Exceez". Like the word "Exceed" but replace the letter "D" with "Z" instead.)
The Numbers has taken control over Shark, giving him uncontrollable power, which causes him to summon out into the world Number 17: Leviathan Dragon.
"Ah! What is this...power inside of me? Aoooooohhhhhh!!!"
*Begins breathing heavily and fast for a bit and then screaming in pain* (Director's Note: Please not too close to the mic though. Please lower the gain. It's kind of like those anime screams, if that makes sense? I don't want my ears to be blasted listening to everyone's audition, haha. Thanks everyone!)
"I overlay my Level Three Big Jaws and Level Three Skull Kraken! With these two monsters, I build the Overlay Network! Emerge, Number 17: Leviathan Dragon!"
Character Description: Astral is a being from the Astral World, who has lost his memories. This results to him being quite literal with everything told and provided to him and becoming curious with a lot of things throughout the world. Despite the memory loss, he does retain one skill: Dueling. He becomes Yuma’s teacher/guidance throughout his duels and helps hone Yuma’s skills to a better level. Astral’s goal is to find all of the Number cards, which should help restore his memory.
Voice Description: Because of his curiosity and celestial appearance, Astral will have a sort of majesty to his voice. Speaking in a rather unique way and emphasizing or extending the speech of certain words in his sentences. For reference, look up Marc Thompson’s portrayal of Astral. A similar sort of voice to his performance would be ideal. If there is a fandub in the future, it would be helpful if the voice actor could keep the same tone of majesty but twist it into sort of a crazy manner. This is because Astral does have a dark counterpart, who is a little more expressive and free in his speech than Astral. If the voice actor can't do this, then that is not a problem at all! I just thought it would be cool to have two characters, who are the same person but just differentiated as good and evil, be voiced by the same person!
Astral has just appeared in the human world. He knows nothing about his surroundings except for the fact that he's in a duel, and the person, whose team he's on, is losing. This prompts him to demand Yuma to keep fighting.
"Rise up. Rise up...and win."
Upon scanning his surroundings, Astral comes upon a conclusion after he analyzes Number 17: Leviathan Dragon.
"Numbers. Something is telling me that the key to my memories resides within that monster. If that's the case, then I need to win this duel no matter what.
Yuma turns and questions Astral's ability to duel, which prompts Astral to answer confidently.
"Of course. After all, I'm a Duelist."
(Director's Note: "Xyz" is pronounced "Exceez". Like the word "Exceed" but replace the letter "D" with "Z" instead.)
After letting Yuma take over the driver's seat for the duel, Astral realizes that his life is at stake and proceeds to strictly instruct Yuma on what to do, in order to prevent himself from disappearing.
"Use 'Monster Reborn' to revive Gagaga Magician from the grave. I cannot allow myself to disappear from existence. Please believe in me!"
Yuma summons out Gagaga Magician from the graveyard.
"With this, our strategy will work. Now Overlay your Level Four Gagaga Magician and Ganbara Knight."
Astral proceeds to confirm Yuma's assumptions about the upcoming combo.
"Take a look at your Extra Deck. It's the Xyz Monster, Number 39: Utopia!"
Yuma asks Astral "This is a Number Monster?!"
"Correct. This is the power I entrust to you. Use it wisely,"
Character Description: Kotori is Yuma’s childhood friend, and, despite his antics, always supported him, even when it seemed like he was going to fail. His personality has that sort of charm that kept her around him all these years. Although Yuma is terrible at dueling, you will always find her by his side and cheering him on. She has an abrasive side though and gets frustrated at Yuma whenever he messes around. Despite this, she also has a cheerful and stubborn personality along with an over-protectiveness towards Yuma, the latter is due to her crush on the oblivious boy. Nonetheless, Kotori is the type of supportive friend that anybody would want to have around.
Voice Description: Kotori is a thirteen-year-old girl, so her voice will have to have a pitch to it. Her voice will need to show that she can become authoritative when necessary and sweet to add to her innocent appearance.
After Yuma makes his move, Tetsuo points out to Kotori that it was a simple mistake, which causes Kotori to yell at Yuma.
"What do you think you’re doing, Yuma?! Get it together!"
Seeing Yuma on the verge of losing, Kotori internally monologues her hopes for Yuma.
"Yuma. Don't give up. I know you. You'd never give up on a challenge! Keep moving forward and bring it to em! I believe in you, Yuma!"
Yuma manages to pull off an Xyz Summon, which prompts Kotori to ask Tetsuo about the sudden turn of events.
"Number 39: Utopia? Did he...always have that card in his deck? If he did, then why did he pick now of all times to play it?"
Character Description: Tetsuo is an adamant person, who happens to enjoy other people’s embarrassment, including his friends. He has kind of this cocky/bully attitude towards others as well. Despite all this, Tetsuo is a loyal friend (most of the time), who doesn’t like to show his “soft” side all that much, while also possessing a strong will.
Voice Description: Because of Tetsuo being around thirteen-years-old and his appearance, his voice will be a mix of deep/pitchy. While his big size indicates he will have a deep voice, his baby face begs to differ, which will kind of make it sound like it’s developing. This one is a hard one to pull off. Try your best and give your best take on it! It might be even better than what was originally conceptualized.
Yuma makes a simple mistake during his turn, which causes Tetsuo to correct him in frustration/annoyance.
"Yuma! Both Spell and Trap Cards can be set face down, remember?! Don’t announce them either!"
(Director's Note: "Xyz" is pronounced "Exceez". Like the word "Exceed" but replace the letter "D" with "Z" instead.)
Shark has the same setup that beat Tetsuo out on his field. Tetsuo realizes this and begins to fear Yuma losing.
"Now Shark has two monsters with the same level on his field. This is turning out exactly like when I dueled him! If I were a gambling man, I’d say he’s planning to Xyz Summon! Gah! Now there’s no way Yuma can win!"
(Director's Note: "Xyz" is pronounced "Exceez". Like the word "Exceed" but replace the letter "D" with "Z" instead.)
Shark manages to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon, which isn't the monster that Shark used against Tetsuo during their duel, confusing the boy.
"Hey, that’s not the Xyz Monster he used against me! What is this?! I-I never heard of a “Number” Monster before!"
Character Description: The gatekeeper within the Emperor’s Key, The Door's true purpose remains a mystery. All it is known for is edging Yuma towards his destiny and granting the boy great power.
Voice Description: The Door will have a deep and mysterious voice. Almost deep towards the core of your chest, because of its size and appearance.
The Door tries to get Yuma to open it. His sudden speech and atmosphere surrounding him is ominous.
"Now, open the door."
The Door senses Yuma's hesitation and begins to demand Yuma to open the door, while maintaining its calm composure.
"Open the door! Once you break these chains open, you’ll obtain a new power. However, as the price for that power, you will lose what is most important to you."
Appearing in his dream, The Door shows foreshadowing of its upcoming appearance to Yuma.
"Yuma Tsukumo. It is almost time. Your destiny will arrive upon you soon enough."
Character Description: “Numbers” is a mysterious force that manages to possess Shark in order to use it. It is practically an aura that gained sentience.
Voice Description: “Numbers” is supposed to sound like a demon of sorts that is attempting to convince Shark to use the power. The voice will definitely be deep and will contain a bit of a sinister tone.
"Numbers" attempts to entrance Shark with its power.
"Shark. You will lose this duel, unless you use my power. You don't want to lose to him and be a failure, do you?"
Now "Numbers" is becoming more desperate and becomes more frantic with trying to convince Shark.
"Do it! Use my power! Yuma Tsukumo will defeat you, if you don't! Do it, Shark!"
Having taken control over Shark, "Numbers" is happy and issues his final command for Shark to use his power.
"Now, call upon them. The Numbers."
