Yellowfang is the medicine cat of ThunderClan. In this scene, she has inhaled a lot of smoke from a forest fire and hasn't eaten in over two days. She is an old cat; found by Fireheart in the medicine den. During the fire, she had followed Fireheart to save two elders, Halftail and Patchpelt, but they had been separated by a falling tree and she had to retreat back to their burning camp. As she realized she was about to die, she dragged herself back into her den and was found two days later by Fireheart in this scene. Yellowfang has a RASPY and CHOKED voice, as if having a very sore throat (because she inhaled too much smoke and is dying).
Yellowfang: Fireheart.. I’m glad it’s you who came.
Yellowfang: You’re a brave warrior, Fireheart. -pause- I could not be prouder of you if you were my own son. And StarClan knows how many times I have wished that you were, instead of -pause, breathe in and sigh- Brokentail.
Yellowfang: I wish you’d been my son, but I could not have borne a cat like you. StarClan gave me Brokentail to teach me a lesson.
Fireheart is a young tom who is a warrior of ThunderClan. After the fire that drove ThunderClan out of their own territory into RiverClan territory, he and his best friend, - who now resides in RiverClan - Graystripe, set out back into the burned-down territory in search for the current state of ThunderClan territory. When they arrive, Fireheart is awfully grief-struck when he finds his friend and the cat whom he'd taken care of for many moons, Yellowfang. His voice is very shaky as he realizes his friend is going to die and there is nothing he can do to stop it.
Fireheart: I shouldn’t have left you here. I’m so sorry.
Fireheart: What did you need to learn? You are as wise as Bluestar herself!
Fireheart: Yellowfang! Don’t die! -pause- Don’t be afraid of StarClan. They will understand about Brokentail. You will be honored by our warrior ancestors for your loyalty to your Clanmates and for your endless courage.
Greystripe is a warrior of RiverClan in this scene, however, he was born and raised in ThunderClan. With Fireheart as his best friend, the two warriors go to ThunderClan territory after the huge forest fire that had driven ThunderClan into RiverClan territory. Their intentions are to check to see if the fire is out and what the forest fire had done to their camp and territories. Greystripe is a minor character in this scene with few lines, but he is still young and an important introduction to the scene.
Greystripe: *homesick* Seeing this place from across the river was the only comfort I had.
Greystripe: -pause then sigh- I’ll bury Halftail. You look for Yellowfang.
