(OPEN) "Victorian Values" - Game Demo.

Project Overview

Victorian Values (Demo).

Hello everyone, and thank you for checking out this listing! I have worked on this concept for quite a while now, and it has transformed from a simple choose your own adventure into a narrative-driven, actual 2D game! I'm so happy that Victorian Values is finally ready to have its first official demo made!

Requirements:

  • Must have Paypal + Discord (or can effectively/reliably communicate through email).
  • Must be over 16.
  • Good work ethic.
  • Willing to stay for a long-term project.
  • Must be comfortable working with others and get along with everyone (I don't put up with in-fighting. Not everyone needs to be BFFs, but please maintain a professional politeness at all times. We will be having team meetings on a somewhat frequent occurrence, so this is important.)
  • No spoiling the game. (I know it's exciting and you want to gush about it to everyone, but it's not really cool.)
  • Use the Application template below! (So I know you're reading this!)

About the Game:

Note: This casting call is for the demo which serves as the prologue for the final game.

"Victorian Values" is a 2D historical fiction animated game that follows the third daughter of the Robinson family in 1850's London as she faces hardships that were commonly faced by women during the Victorian Era. This game functions as a cheeky social commentary, as well as an insight on what life was like in this difficult time, and highlights the lesser known struggles of Irish immigrants, the bank's predatory nature, and the issues surrounding the Royal family. As such, it tackles a lot of sensitive subjects such as racism, classism, sexism, prejudice against people based on sexual orientation or their culture, and other such subjects. Despite it being uncomfortable, it's important to acknowledge such things existed, and to explore the themes and ideals surrounding this time period. However, this will not be the main focus of the game, only certain sections and pathways will explore these themes more deeply.

This game is unique in which its progression is incredibly fluid, and the options to progress throughout the game are seemingly endless, and each action has consequences. Remember that beggar who you slapped for funsies in chapter 3? Well, now in chapter 47 they're a distinguished member of the court and they still remember you, and thus you become the victim of an assassination attempt because everyone hates you. The game will most likely not span 47 chapters (this is just an exaggeration lol), but it will be fairly large with many different pathways and end goals you can achieve as you go from just-turned 18-year old to death.

There are three main sections to the game: young adult, adult, and elder, all of which depends on your actions during the previous chapters. (And now you start to understand why I need help making this lol.)

There will also be a management side to the game where you must keep track of your family, weigh up income vs expenses, and even start your own business! This is more of a side-element though, and the main focus will be on story and progressing through the game. (Think Telltale Games meet The Oregon Trail.)

The closest game I can relate this to would be Pentiment (this game actually made me fall in love with historical fiction again <3) in terms of artwork, gameplay and cheeky humour.

I am open to ideas, and would love for people to have a say in the process! Please feel free to tell me if you have any potential suggestions for the artwork, gameplay, or anything that you would like to see!

The Game's Status:

As this game was originally a choose your own adventure, the demo's script is already fully finalised, and mostly written up; ready to be transferred into a 2D game state. Hopefully this demo will be ready for release within 3-5 months with the help of the talented individuals who I am looking to hire on!

This demo is funded entirely by myself at the moment, but along with a gameplay trailer I'm hoping that we can encourage people to donate on Ko-Fi or Pateron to help with the rest of production. If not, that's okay! I'm happy to fund the rest of production myself, it'll just be at a much slower pace.

Artists Section:

Hi artists! Thanks for taking the time to check out this little demo I'm putting together! As an artist myself, I know the struggle of having to work for someone else to deliver a product, so please let me know if there's anything that I can do for you to make this experience enjoyable for everyone involved! Feel free to apply for multiple positions, some are more demanding than others however, so keep that in mind!

I do have in mind a very specific artstyle for the game (see GDD below), but am open to suggestions (as long as it fits in theme with the game of course)!

Game Design Document:
Here is a link to the Game Design Document! Here is relevant information that you might need to get a better understanding for the game. There's not much information on the story in here for privacy reasons, but you will have full context when you join the team!

See the PDF here!

Your Application:

Your Application (using the template below) will let me know about you, and how serious you are about joining the project! Sorry for the inconvenience, but I see how so many people just copy-paste their audition and it slightly frustrates me seeing the seemingly lack of care to use a pre-written response instead of a personalised audition. It's just polite to read what you're going to be working on.

Conclusion:
This has been in the works for quite a while, and I'm incredibly happy that I am now at a point where I can get people on board! Sorry for the long description, but it's important to get everything out there and have no surprises!

I can't wait to work with you! <3

Latest Updates

  • Update Four (News Galore!)

Hi everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates, we've been very busy!

As some of you may know, Khalil (our Art Director) has recently joined the team and has been a massive contributor in helping to nail down the art style, the game visuals, and helping out wherever he possibly can (he's seriously amazing). This is why we haven't brought on more people just yet, since we're trying to nail it all down before anything else.

Before we list the minor changes, we have a big announcement! We have decided to rename our studio to "KHAMIX STUDIOS" to better encapsulate the new team-atmosphere.

    CHANGES.
    1. There have been a few changes to the visuals such as trialing a new black and white art style that better brings appreciation to older period pieces, and to replicate a journal/notebook style. We are also leaning more heavily into the sketchy art style, and are hoping that it'll give the game a more unique look.
    2. We are getting in contact with some experienced programmers to help us better achieve what we want to do! The struggle we were having before was that we were unable to really push the game both visually and technically to its greatest state because we were unable to execute it, but hopefully we will soon acquire someone who can help us in this department.
    3. The background style has also changed, and will now be more sketch like instead of highly detailed. If you are nervous because you feel like you aren't able to match the style, please don't be afraid and apply anyway! We'd love to see what you can do!

    UI/Interface Artists.
Hi guys! Thanks so much for applying! I just want to put out a quick message to please link examples of relevant artwork. Unfortunately with a majority of the submissions for this position, we have gotten some amazing character designs, background art, and the like, but there are no examples of interfaces or title logos/etc.
If you are unsure what an interface looks like, but will like to have a go at it, here is a website filled with examples from a multitude of games.
    https://interfaceingame.com/

Thanks guys so much, we couldn't have made it this far without you guys' support! Just seeing so many talented people so excited for the project is incredibly inspiring, and I will see to it that this project will be completed.
    Thanks guys!

  • Update Three

Hi all! It's been a few days and I wanted to update ya'll on what's been happening!

    Character Designer:

Right now, the role of character designer is closed due to it being assigned to someone (that someone being Khalil Jones)! They are an amazingly talented artist, and I am currently working with them to create the official style for the characters. I am so grateful that they are now onboard, and they have been an absolute delight to work with!

    IMPORTANT UPDATE Background Artist.

To encourage more submissions, I increased the pay for the background artist position. I hadn't taken into consideration the exchange rate from AUD to USD, so that has been fixed to be at a more suitable price.

    Game Programmer.

I am now officially in talks with a freelance coder about making the game script! This is incredibly exciting, and I will update everyone on the progress of this development when I get more information.

If you are a freelance coder yourself, please still apply! I'm interested to see what's out there 👀.

    Social Media.

I may end up creating a social media account to track the game's development, although I kinda wanna get a few more things done before I do anything like that haha.

That's it for now! Just wanted to keep everyone in the loop! Have a good day/night everyone!

  • Update two! (Hiring on people + game updates!)

Hi all! Glad to see still so many people apply!

A quicker update this time; I didn't realise initially but I thought that I hadn't created/organised what I needed to in terms of documentation, and thus that's why I said in the last update that I wouldn't be taking anyone on for at least a month. Turns out, I'm a lot better organised than I thought haha. So, I will be slowly bringing people aboard starting from either today, or in the next few days!

    Game updates:

So to prepare for people coming on board, I've been subtly working away in the background on a "demo demo" to show what the game will sort of look and feel like! So far, only the player code and a bit of the world has been done (on account of me being out and about), but I hopefully should be ready to show that sometime soon! This is why I'm also gonna start bringing some people on, so that we can use either better placeholders, or actual finalised assets for the game!

I am still in need of a developer however, so if you are interested please either apply or contact me!

    Thanks guys!

Edit: I also changed the title of the project so that it's easier to search up <3.

  • Update!

Hi all, thanks for showing so much interest in the project! I've been seeing some really awesome submissions, and I can't wait to start working with you!
I've just made some updates to the GDD, and have included more detail and visual aids in what the demo might look like! I will continue to update it slowly as we prepare to work on it! I have also been working on sorting out and organising what needs to be done, so that we can begin work straight away!
(I will not officially reach out/hire people on for at least a month while I prepare the Discord server, the GDD and generally get all my ducks in a row so that we can immediately get started.)

    IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR ARTISTS:
Hi guys! I've seen some awesome work thus far, and I can't wait to start officially working with you guys! <3
I'm not sure if it came across in my original description, but the game does not have an official style yet, I only have a vague idea of what I want it to be. So if some of you were scared off because you thought I had a crazy detailed art style, please don't panic!!
The first thing we'll do when we get together will be to nail down the official art style, and create an official style guide for future reference.

For those interested in character design; the demo currently has eleven characters available for design, as well as background characters and non-human characters. (Every game needs a poochie to pet - no arguing.) So if you are more comfortable working on main vs. background vs. non-human characters, rest assured that there will be plenty of work!

    Musicians Update:
WOW. I am 150% blown AWAY by you guys' submissions! I never expected that half of the submissions would be for music/sound positions! I'm honestly speechless at the submissions that I've heard, and I'm already trying to budget in having as many of you as I can onboard! <3
Note; please don't be afraid to also apply for the SFX position! I feel like I should have better clarified this position, but it mostly comprises of man-made music-like sound effects that you often hear in games. For example, the talking-dialogue sound effect, rather than specifically Foley or everyday sound effects. Please don't feel offended if I reach out to you offering this position instead, or asking if you would be willing to do both. It's just that many people have not applied for the position, and honestly you guys are all so talented I want to use you for every aspect of production like AHHHHH!!!

    Writers Update:
For now I have closed the role for co-writer position due to me wanting to get some work done. I'm not sure if this makes sense, but because I opened up the role I immediately wanted to stop working on the writing for the game itself, and thus I want to close it for a few days to pull myself out of this writing slump. I swear my brain uses ANYTHING as an excuse not to work.
Also, I noticed that everyone who applied for the writer's position sent in a nice variety of work, all of which I enjoyed having a look through! However, I am moreso looking for a showcase of story outlining rather than actual writing. Unfortunately, the majority of the writing we do for the game will not end up in the game/demo itself, so we will use a more bare bones script-like format.
Here is a link to a quick guide that I made up for it! : D
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KRRszgg98DQAXs0b6glDAdaPdJ7ETYyN/view?usp=sharing
Hopefully this will clear it up!

    Thanks so much guys!

Co-Writer Role.

------------------

Co-Writers are the people who help out with writing, editing, and scripting!

Please see requirements below to see if you fit the part!

Requirements.

------------------

The Co-Writer position would be a relatively cruisey job, and will be mostly someone helping me with writing, editing or suggesting things we can implement. I'll be the main writer, and I'm happy to do most of the work at least for now, I just need someone to bounce ideas off onto and work closely with.

This will look like correcting grammar, rewording things to sound better and easier to read, and suggesting the addition of dialogue (like when interacting with an object, the character can say something.) This doesn't mean you're only limited to doing these things, however. I may ask for feedback on creating a character, request that you create a character, or ask you to script up important scenes. Payment for each of these more important requests will be discussed per project.

As this is for a demo, time isn't much of a restraint to us as we'll be going back and forth on a lot of things, but keep in mind that for the final product I will be inviting back all of the original team (plus some more hopefully). This means that when working on the final game we'll have stricter deadlines and faster turnarounds (though not without reasonable times).

For your application, I will need a resume and portfolio of relevant work, as well as examples of game scripts you have made in the past. If you have not worked on a game before or have not created a script (dialogue or otherwise), please inform me and take the time to create a mockup for your application.

I will also need how long it takes you to make a script, your creative process, some examples of characters you have created, and other such information. I prefer writers who are more all-rounders, but I don't discriminate so if you prefer to do one thing or another, please let me know!

About Payment.

------------------

Currently I'm not too sure to go about payment as I'll be the one mostly writing it, so I'm thinking we can agree upon $30 (AUD) for now, and then reevaluate this price if anything changes.

If you are chosen for this project, please be aware that you will be required to provide an invoice.

Only applicants with Paypal will be accepted.

Character Sprite Artist Role.
------------------

Character Design Artists are individuals who create the designs for the characters in the game.
Please see requirements below to see if you fit the part!

Artist Requirements.
------------------
As this game is set in Victorian England, preferably the art style would be more detailed and fitting of that time period. The character designs will need to be historically accurate, and easily readable for the rest of the team to animate/draw. They will need to show the character's nature, personality, heritage and more.
I will provide examples and references.
Note, in this role there will be a lot of back and forth on how they look, what changes need to be made, etc. So if you struggle with taking criticism/would like criticism delivered in a particular way, please inform me and I'll do my best to accommodate you!

The rate listed is just a rough estimation of how much I can pay, but I am very much willing to go a lot higher if the right artist comes along, so please keep that in mind.

Payment is discussed and agreed upon before each project (aka artwork), and unless there's a very good reason for it, I will not negotiate a change in the agreed upon price. (Note, all discussions of payment/agreement of payment will be recorded and saved.)

Character Sprite Artist Role.
------------------

Character Sprite Artists are individuals who create the artwork for the various characters in the game. This will involve taking the finalised character design and creating the sprites in the game!
Please see requirements below to see if you fit the part!

Artist Requirements.
------------------
As this game is set in Victorian England, preferably the art style would be more detailed and fitting of that time period. The sprites will need to be made in high res with no blurring, and will need to be manipulable for the sprite animators. The sprites will need to match the character artwork with no noticeable differences in style.

Character Sprite Animator Role.

------------------

Character Sprite Animators are the individuals who are in charge of animating the various characters' animation cycles!

Please see requirements below to see if you fit the part!

Requirements.

------------------

Animations will need to be high res, clean and easily readable. I'm not looking for 24fps, with only some animations being smooth (walking and running cycles for example). Other smaller once-off animations will have less frames, and be extremely barebones (pretty much having the keyframes and that's it). If you are hired on, I'll talk more about it in depth and will be able to better explain it/show you what I mean.

Note, in this role there will be a lot of back and forth on how they look, what changes need to be made, etc. So if you struggle with taking criticism/would like criticism delivered in a particular way, please inform me and I'll do my best to accommodate you!

BG Musicians are in charge of creating the music which will play in the background during the game.
Please see requirements below to see if you fit the part!

Requirements.
------------------
As this game is set in Victorian England, preferably the music will fit that era. The music will need to be pleasant and nice to listen to, while not noticeable enough that it detracts from the rest of the game. I was looking at having these be anywhere between 3-5 minutes.I have classical listed, but I am open to other genres of music if they are appropriate and fitting. I don't have a specific number for how many tracks we will need for this demo, but be prepared to produce around 5 tracks, most likely less than this. Note: not all tracks will be 3-5 minutes, some can be shorter and looped.

Payment will be for each accepted sound effect, regardless if it is used in the final product or not. I will most likely bulk order them, so don't worry about only getting 5/whatever we agree upon once a week haha.
