Until the End [Audio Drama]

Until the End [Audio Drama]

Project Overview

"You’re a daycare worker, watching over toddlers, when the imminent end of the world is announced. It becomes increasingly clear none of the kids’ parents are going to show up as the end inches nearer."

Hello! I'm Nikita, a professional filmmaker on various TV series and movies. As I'm on hiatus from the industry (work is slim pickings at the moment) I figured it was a good time to be productive and work on this mini passion project, as the story is beautifully written and I'm eager to bring it to life in audio format.

Originally a short story (written by BixbyTheMartian, published October 27, 2020) based off of a tumblr fic prompt, in which we follow along with the daycare worker's tense and heartbreaking day through her diary-esque voice recordings, and discover the real reason the children's parents didn't come to pick them up on the day the world was ending. Bixby published their story online under a creative commons sharealike license, and this project will be published the same way, free to listen to on Youtube, and free for adaptation and shared use (with appropriate credits.)

Chosen cast will be paid a small honorarium as thanks for lending their voices to this small passion project, as well as IMDb credits.

Audition Notes:

-Please provide 1-2 takes of each line in ABC format. Stick with ONE accent only please; I want to hear different tones and energy, not different accents.

-Only clean, clear audio will be considered. Be sure to have a decent setup and good quality equipment.

-Name your files clearly. ProjectTitle_RoleName_ActorName. It makes life easier for everyone and looks clean and professional on your part.

-For chosen cast: I can be contacted at any point if you have questions, concerns, or would like to go over lines. I enjoy (and prefer) scheduling a live directing/recording session so we can work together for the best performance and to save time, but if you'd prefer to send in your lines and do re-recordings over discord where needed, that's fine too. Payment will be sent once all your lines are sent in and greenlit. And please, follow me here so that you will always be notified of any future projects I produce!

  • Auditions Closed! Next Project Announcement!

The listing didn't like my timezone, apparently, so it's showing an incorrect end time, but auditions are now officially closed!

Thank you so much to everyone who auditioned! It's been an incredible turnout and I've enjoyed listening to every new voice who threw their hat in the ring. There were a LOT of shortlisted voices for Addie, especially, and it's going to be a difficult decision, as there can only be one. Please bear with me through the deliberation process.

    -

Cast will be chosen and assigned within the next couple days, at which point I'll link up with them through discord to distribute scripts and discuss recordings.

    -

On a final note, I am gearing up for my next full project: a 4 episode original audio drama, which I am writing and directing. If you'd like to keep an eye out for when auditions open up, and potentially work with me on all future projects, please follow me for updates! Thanks again, friends. As we say in the film and television world: see you on the next one!

"In her search for her missing partner, our protagonist finds herself uncovering a hidden town full of lies and secrets, people with the wrong memories, a mayor that wants her gone, and a coy doctor that seems to have all the answers for something in return. There's really just one question: how far is she willing to go?"

  • Thank you!

Just one week left until auditions close! I want to say a massive thank you so much to everyone who's auditioned so far. There are some absolutely stellar performances (and quite a few Addie auditions that have made me cry!) and I'm already foreseeing a great deal of struggle in deciding on my final casting choices among some truly fantastic voices. I will be taking a few days after auditions close to deliberate and announce the chosen cast. Until then, I wish you all the best, and I hope to work with you soon!

The steadfast and kindhearted daycare worker, who chooses to dutifully remain with the abandoned children at the daycare as they wait out the end of the world. Majority of this short story is told through her audio recordings.

Looking for a realistic, grounded performance, someone who can really bring out all the emotions and believable fear and heartbreak. Addie will cry, sound shaken, and sob at various points. She stays strong for the children, but when she's speaking to her recorder in private, her voice will crack and tremble as she holds back tears.

  • Everybody else has left. All the other kids were picked up, the other staff left. They gave me all the keys. I promised to stay and wait for as long as... well. Even if some of the parents show up, I guess some of them won’t, so I’m just waiting. Until.

  • This is so much pizza, but I can’t... well. It’s enough for everybody to have as much pizza and candy as they can eat. I don’t want them to have too much, though... I don’t want them to feel sick when they... (Audio cuts off as she starts to cry. Then the next recording:) So I gave everybody pizza and candy and set them loose on the art room. Fuck it.

  • I can’t get the tv or radio to work, and I’m not putting the battery in my cell phone, so I’m just... I’m just gonna go lay down in there and stay with them. Until the end. But um. If you find this, I did my best, and they had a good day, and with any luck they never knew what happened. (starts sobbing before the recording ends)

Classic news anchor voice. We hear just a snippet of him on the radio. Professional, but clearly tense with adrenaline and relieved that the Earth has been saved just in the nick of time.

  • …we’re having trouble getting a good angle, but it looks like masked superheroes destroyed the meteor just before it could enter Earth’s atmosphere. Some of the debris has caused minor damage, and there are some major antennas down, but it... it seems that Earth has been saved.

Heroic, unwavering, a beacon of strength and hope. His voice should make us think of an iconic hero like Superman. Good, kind, safe, warm. He's clear and well spoken, but isn't afraid to let some emotion come through as he speaks of their children, and genuine respect when he speaks of the daycare worker who stayed with them through the end of the world.

  • Addie is hesitant to delete the recording, because she feels it’s a historical record, but she also doesn’t want to hang onto it. She’s afraid she’s said too much, that our identities might be revealed just by figuring out who she is and where she worked. So I’m going to give this to my friend who can send it to a museum in the future, where our identities don’t matter anymore, and they can preserve this record.

  • I can’t tell you how horrifying it was. To be working so hard and not knowing if our kids were safe. Were they scared? Were they alone? We were dealing with trying to save everybody and not knowing what was happening to our own kids. To come home and find them gently asleep, having had a really fun day, was... beyond our wildest hopes.

  • She made sure you had a great day, and that you were happy and had fun, and she did it while being scared out of her mind, mourning herself and you and everybody, and I don’t think I know anybody braver.

I'm likely to just use something short and royalty-free for a little bit of outro instrumentals at the end as credits are read, but if any aspiring musicians would like to offer up something they've made to be a part of this project (and perhaps to work with me on future projects,) I'm always happy to collab.

Send in some samples of your work, or feel free to whip up a short instrumental you think would be suitable for a heartbreaking story with a happy, beautiful ending. Nothing you send me will be used without your explicit permission and a signed contract.
