The Little Redcoat (3D Animated Fairytale)

The Little Redcoat (3D Animated Fairytale)

Project Overview

Who Are We?

Al Winter Pictures is a  web-based startup animation studio based in northern New Jersey, USA! Inspired by the myths, legends, and fairy tales of previous generations, our goal is to bring new magic to the screen! With contemporary themes and classic styles, coupled with industry standard animation and VFX technology, we strive to breathe new life into children’s stories that prove to be both moving and entertaining for the whole family!

What's This Project About?

If one thing has been proven time and time again, everyone loves a heartwarming family friendly Christmas story! Ours will be released around Christmas 2020. Our founder and story writer along with many members of our development team have spent months creating a spellbinding story that speaks to some of the most difficult lessons that children and adults alike will have to face with in their lifetime. Belief is a powerful thing, and our story talks about how difficult decisions surrounding beliefs are, the power that they can have over other people, and the results of what acting on those beliefs can cause. This Disney-esq story will teach children the value of loving their neighbor and loving themselves, and parents the importance of being cautious in their beliefs and their effects on their children, and on the world.

The Little Redcoat surrounds a simple grocer, Gregory Powell, and his son Charlie who had rejected the divisive pressures asserted by society and remained open to all peoples from the village. In his effort to instill those open, loving and neighborly beliefs in his son, his wish upon a star brings Charlie’s favorite toy read coat soldier to life to look over, protect, and guide him through what would become the most difficult and tumultuous time in the village’s history.

Story

Charlie is a 10-year-old boy who lives with his father Gregory, a grocer in the local market, and his mother Linda in a small, quiet village high in the snow-covered hills and mountaintops of their little kingdom. While things may appear to be calm and peaceful, the reality is anything but. There is a long running feud between two distinct neighborhoods in the village, both blaming the other for the environmental destruction caused by years of industrial pursuit. Ironically, drills north of the hills caused a massive crack to form in the side of the mountain that now runs through the village, dividing them straight down the middle.

The corporation that owns these drills and many of the shops in the local market want to keep the villagers divided so that, over time as things get worse, they can run their competitors out of business and hold a complete monopoly over the village. Along with massive economic power, its leader J.D. Chamberlain uses his quick wit and underhanded tactics to pressure the mayor into doing his bidding, whatever the cost.

The story follows Charlie when his long-time friend Clara, from the other side of the divide, moves next door. She is exposed to all of the ugly realities of discrimination from other children and their parents when she goes to her first day of school. Charlie does his best to defend her but finds himself overwhelmed with confusion as to why the villagers are so hostile in the first place. His father, Gregory, does everything within his power to shield his son from this senseless hatred. Upon hearing of his son’s experiences that day, he makes a wish on a star that night that Charlie will know what to do when his own character is ultimately tested. This wish brings his little redcoat toy soldier to life who then promises to look over Charlie and make sure Gregory’s wish comes true. Over the course of the film, the little redcoat and Charlie’s humorous adventures with Clara and Hector take him around his village and expose him to ideas and perspectives he never knew existed. And when tragedy strikes the family, important observations are made about society and how we deal with grief, change, and eventually acceptance.

Our Message

Charlie and Clara were characters created to show the value of the innocence of children. Their friendship displays the simple underlying principle that hatred is learned, and thus can be unlearned. Their exciting humorous animated adventures along with delightful brief musical numbers will hold children’s attention and hopefully encourage them to reach out to others who are different from them. Strong friendships can come from the most unlikely of places!

From corrupt politicians to greedy businessmen, this story has many elements that reflect the world we live in today. The village is divided, not just physically, but emotionally as well. Both the mayor and Gregory do their best to instill their beliefs into their children, both causing huge problems that, although unintentional, cause serious damage. History has shown that stories and beliefs are powerful, and often times far outlive the people that make them. The adults viewing the film will find that the overall message is very clear. Be careful with the beliefs you hold and the stories you tell, because children will listen.

The nutcracker-like wooden toy that was given to Gregory as a child by his father. Once he became a father, he gave it to his son, hoping that it would help and comfort him the same way it did when he was younger. During the story plot, Gregory makes a wish that his son Charlie would always remember the things he taught him, which brings the toy to life. This character will perform a few songs for the film's soundtrack! (For audition purposes, this character was inspired by Jimminy Cricket from Walt Disney's Pinocchio)

  • I think that's the reason your father's wish brought me to life in the first place. Everyone thinks that their beliefs are right Charlie, and they would much prefer that you believed them as well; The mayor, the villagers, your friends, even your father. It doesn't matter what they believe now; the question is, what do you believe?

  • Hatred isn't enough, you sisters and brothers, then when you get what you want, you turn on each other!

  • You tear each other down over grudges and scraps, and where will we be at the end of all that?

The young son of Gregory, who learns about both himself and the world around him throughout the plot of the story. His turbulent experience in his divided village is simplified and guided by the wisdom of TLRC, given to him by his father and brought to life by his wish. This character will perform a few songs for the film's soundtrack!

  • Daddy, why are the villagers so mad at each other?

  • Well, you don't have to worry about anything. As far as I'm concerned, you've always been my neighbor!

  • Me and my daddy wrote this story together, but my little redcoat helped me finish it. You're gonna love it, I mean, I hope you love it. You're probably gonna love it.

A young girl that grew up with and is best friends with Charlie. She is from the other neighborhood, across the divide, and moves to his community with her mother following the death of her father. She faces frequent open discrimination from other children in Charlie’s neighborhood, but finds comfort in her friendship with him and his family. Her unorthodox and comical relationship with the village’s mayor also proves to be a testament to her inner strength in the face of such open hostility. This character will perform a few songs for the film's soundtrack! (For audition purposes, this character has a spunky, fiesty personality. While she lives in a community that is at times openly hostile, she meets the challenge with strength and resolve)

  • Hi Charlie! I hope your school is ready for me!

  • You sure do run fast for someone of your....circumference. I'm impressed!

  • Now, we rebuild. It won't happen overnight, but we can do it. One brick at a time.

Charlie’s father and one of the most popular and unifying figures in the village. He is a humble grocer, and the only vendor in the village market to sell products and service customers from both neighborhoods due to his strong internal beliefs in loving oneself and loving his neighbors regardless of the good and the bad. This makes him popular with many village children who visit his shop often before and after school. His kindness and sincerity have made him a cornerstone of village life, and one of the main targets of the corporation due to his ability to challenge their economic dominance and undercut their divisive social agenda. Gregory is very close to his son and tries to teach him everything he knows so that he is prepared to face the realities of village life and make the right decisions regardless of social pressure. This character will perform a few songs for the film's soundtrack! (For audition purposes, this character was inspired by Fred Rogers from Mr. Roger's Neighborhood)

  • People believe what they must in order to feel safe in a world that is constantly changing. We must be sensitive to their fears if we are ever to cross the divide.

  • The greatest thing that we can do and let somebody know that they are loved, and capable of loving others.

  • There is so such thing as a good or bad person Charlie, people are taught how to do bad things. And if they can be taught to hate, they can also be taught to love. Love your neighbor Charlie, even when they don't deserve it. You just never know who's life you'll change by doing so.

The son of the mayor, and the bully at school. Hector is a privileged child who constantly seeks the approval of his loving but ultimately uninvolved father. He listens to the rhetoric that his father must give the people in order to remain in power and internalizes it. As a result, it leads him to make many openly unkind and prejudiced remarks and actions that nearly lead to his father’s downfall and are not noticed by his father until the end of the plot. (For audition purposes, Hector is very snide, rude, pompous and entitled. He often says very rude and jarring things coupled with a combative attitude due to the fact that his is neglected by his successful father.)

  • Ewww. What is she doing here? Don't you have some dust you should be farming?

  • Well, my father is extremely important and probably won't have very much time for you. But, if I ask him, he may be able to squeeze you in.

  • I've done everything he's asked of me and more. I'm at the top of my class, I'm popular, my teams always win in gym; why won't he love me?

Chamberlain is the main villain in The Little Redcoat. The richest and most powerful man in the village, who owns the largest and most successful shops in the village (The Corporation). He is an industrialist and heads the board of business people from both neighborhoods in the village who profit greatly from the social divide between the people. His company has financed every successful campaign for the village mayor, and manipulates him into keeping up the divisive rhetoric, despite the increased violence in the village, while he plans to build a new drill in the mountains that would further damage the land. (For audition purposes, this character is pompous, clever, but has a sharp temper and tends to be reckless and arrogant.)

  • Oh Hillside. Simple, simple Mayor Hillside. This is called progress. Progress we need to stay on top, and keep you in power.

  • THOSE SHEEP THINK WHAT I WANT THEM TO THINK! That's why I pay you to win! Now mark my words, if you won't commit to the Corporation, I'll find someone who will!

  • Was it an accident? I told you, the corporation is in favor of a monopoly in this village. Does it really matter how we get there?

The mayor of the village, and a member of the family that has held that position for many generations. He is a fiercely competitive man, loud, talkative, highly egocentric and like most politicians, is willing to play to the emotions of his base in order to gain political favor. He has consistently accepted the support of the corporation to fund his campaigns, though the rhetoric that he is required to feed his political supporters in his neighborhood of the village often is hateful and prejudiced against villagers from the other neighborhood. In spite of all of this, Mayor Hillside is very good friends with Gregory, and has been from childhood. He spent many hours at Gregory’s home as a child due to his relationship with his father, which was often pressure filled and largely emotionally abusive. While he does what is necessary to remain in power, he shares Gregory’s love for family, and justifies his behavior as maintaining the family status to give his son the best shot at success (which is mostly rhetoric from his father) and happiness. Ironically, he has a similar relationship with his son, and is repeating many of the mistakes his own father made.  (For audition purposes, Mayor Hillside is the definition of smoke and mirrors. He puts on a boastful and overpowering performance for the people, while he is actually very weak when it comes to standing up to Chamberlain and the Corporation. While he is a dedicated career politician, he is determined to uphold his family name and secure a future for his son. While he is distant from him, he cares for him more than anything in the world.)

  • You have to be a winner Hector, we don't have losers in this family. We WIN, it's what we do. Believe me, we always win.

  • What are you kids doing here. Who let you in? MARSHA! Who let these kids in here!?

  • You know what little girl, I like you're style. I know a winner when I see one, and you're a winner. Good for you.

A turtle, and best friend of Clara who cares for him as a house pet. A gift from her father, Jarome is a dull, but fast witted elder who amuses himself by often by making fun of those he warns in hindsight. His comical relationship with the Little Redcoat adds comic relief to the film.

  • Forgive me for saying so, but for some reason, I'm not inclined to be taking advice from some painted talking driftwood.

  • Sure, he's a winner alright. Clearly not a winner at his diet. HA!

  • Yeah, yeah you do that. Do something right for once in your life.

  • You will make it Charlie, because you have your father's heart. He never gave up, and neither will you.
