The Conflagration of the Closed Set

The Conflagration of the Closed Set

Project Overview

The Conflagration of the Closed Set is a detective fiction game where players explore the various fraught relationships between the cast and crew on a film set in 1950s California while investigating a mysterious time loop that ends in the fiery death of everyone involved in the production. It’s a story about judgement, connection, and cultural assimilation.

This is a student production, so we’re unable to offer compensation right now. We encourage newer voice actors to apply (and learn with us!)

No GenAI will be used in any part of this production. This story will include mentions of murder, child death, racism, sexism, and queerphobia.

You are a film director that’s finally getting a shot at producing something great, after your talents were wasted making propaganda films for the Allies in WWII. However, you’re fully aware that you’re working with less than you were hoping for: washed-up stars, bottom of the barrel crew. Once you whip them into shape, you know you’re going to make stars of them.

Who We’re Looking For

An older-sounding voice, with sleaze covered up by authority. We want someone that sounds like someone you want to trust… even if you really shouldn’t.

  • Don't turn away. You're a man, aren't you, and surely I'm not a fright as all that! Everyone says I've lovely hair and after all, a man killed himself on my account. You have to look at something, and there's nothing here to see except the sofas and that awful ornament and the table. Surely I'm better to look at that lot of stupid furniture. Listen! I've dropped out of their heart like a little sparrow fallen from its nest. So gather me up, dear, fold me to your heart--and you'll see how nice I can be.

  • There...You know the way the catch larks-- with a mirror? I'm your lark-mirror, my dear, and you can't escape me...There isn't any pimple, not a trace of one. So what about it? Suppose the mirror started telling lies? Or suppose I covered my eyes--as he is doing-- and refused to look at you, all that loveliness of yours would be wasted on the desert air. No, don't be afraid, I can't help looking at you. I shan't turn my eyes away. And I'll be nice to you, ever so nice. Only you must be nice to me, too.

  • Listen! Each man has an aim in life, a leading motive; that's so, isn't it? Well, I didn't give a damn for wealth, or for love. I aimed at being a real man. A tough, as they say. I staked everything on the same horse... Can one possibly be a coward when one's deliberately courted danger at every turn? And can judge a life by a single action? I "dreamt," you say. It was no dream. When I chose the hardest path, I made my choice deliberately. A man is what he wills himself to be. But I died too soon. I wasn't allowed time to--to do my deeds.

You’re a gaffer who’s finally got a seat in the boys’ club, and you’re not going to squander it. God knows, it’s the only way you’re going to hack it in this industry. The other girls on set may not like it, but they’re just not playing the game. Little do you know, you’re being played yourself.

A Latino actor or actress who can play the role of “cool girl” (a la Amy in Gone Girl).
