Caligula: The English Fandub [Minor Roles & Staff]

What is "Caligula"? 
It is a JRPG developed by Aquaria for the PSVita and published in 2016 by FuRyu in Japan and in 2017 by ATLUS internationally as "The Caligula Effect".  An anime series was produced by Satelight and started to air in April 2018, and a PS4 remake "Caligula: Overdose" was developed for release in Japan May 2018. The original concept was written by Tadashi Satomi, the writer for Persona 1 & 2. 

I will interchangeably use both titles "Caligula" and "The Caligula Effect" to refer to the same work. 

Sypnosis

A virtual idol known as μ (pronounced mew) performs user-inputted songs and gains self-awareness through exposure to users' bitter feelings and dissatisfaction toward reality. Wanting to save humanity — which she believes is continuously suffering — she lures people to a virtual reality world called Mobius with her songs. She then imprisons them in Mobius, thinking they will be free from the suffering of reality and that all their wishes will come true. Nine members of the "Go-Home Club" try to find a way out of Mobius while confronting the "Ostinato Musicians", overseers of Mobius and composers of μ's songs.


WHAT WILL BE DUBBED:

Currently we plan to dub all 12 episodes of the anime series.


WHAT WILL NOT BE DUBBED: 
The vocal tracks played in the game and anime. Excluding the opening and ending of the anime, all of the songs feature the vocals of Reina Ueda (上田 麗奈).


WHAT MAY BE DUBBED:

If there’s enough interest, we may dub the games. (specifically Caligula: Overdose if it is localized) 

However, this is a casting call for the anime first and foremost; we will ask cast members if they’re willing to reprise the role if we decide to dub the games.


PROSPECTIVE ACTORS:

  • No previous background knowledge of The Caligula Effect is required, but do expect story spoilers. I try to list the basic information needed for the role, but some characters by their nature may contain spoilers. 

  • Quality of acting is very important for the main cast! The story provokes a lot of emotions, so be prepared to express them as best as you can as the character would express them.

  • All audition lines may be done up to your own interpretation, including those with added notes.

  • You may reference the Japanese voice actors, but please prioritize your acting abilities over imitation. We want to hear the best of how you portray the character.


  • The only role that will be required to reference the Japanese VA is μ (Mu), voiced by Reina Ueda. You can find the reference video in her profile. For the rest of the cast, I have made reference videos if you'd like to listen, though it is not required:



  • Please do your best to maintain good audio quality. Actors will be expected to record takes themselves and send the files over. 

  • Please have a continued interest in the project. I believe the current schedule gives us enough time to get things done, but this is no small feat, so I want everyone involved in the project to be at least somewhat committed for best results.


PROSPECTIVE STAFF:  


  • As staff, we will all work with each other and the actors to produce the best product we can make.

  • We may start the project after all main acting roles are cast. Staff member applications are always open even after we start the project, and I will handle any untaken roles otherwise. 


COMMUNICATION:
Our main form of communicating will be in a Discord server, which features both chat and voice communication. It is available for free at discordapp.com with an account registration, and can be used in-browser or with the Discord program/app. I believe it will be the best way for all people working on the project to contribute their ideas and work with the acting. If you are unable to use Discord, please inform me if you are casted. Otherwise, all those casted will be sent a link to join the Discord server.


RELEASE SCHEDULE: 

Our current plan is to release 2 episodes a month starting on August/September 2018, 2-3 months after the corresponding Blu-ray/DVD releases. They will be released on Dailymotion, and Youtube if possible. The schedule may be adjusted as needed.

  • August Update

    A few points I want to make: The Caligula English Team Discord is now open and this is the link: https://discord.gg/qtnVV7p You will need to be approved by me after you have entered the server.   • Caligula English: Thank You For All Your Auditions!

    I think this has been a good casting call and I believe we're going to be able to gather a good cast for the upcoming fandub. The initial audition deadline has passed, but I'm going to give as much feedback as I can the rest of the week and allow reauditions as needed. Final decisions of Part 1 of the main cast will be made afterwards, but auditions for Part 2 (The roles I have listed in the previous update) will remain open until July 21.   • Deadline Extenstion & Role Casting Info

    A few notes to make regarding casting and deadlines: First: To make up for delays in feedback, the general deadline will be extended to WEDnesday, JULY 4. Second: This is Important Information for the following roles: Izuru Minesawa ／ Sweet-P ／ Shonen-Doll ／ Mirei ／ Ike-P ／ Shadow Knife The following characters do not appear in EP1 & EP2 (our first planned release) so it’s possible that they may not be casted following the general deadline (e.g. if there aren't enough auditions for the role) If this happens, we will still begin work after the rest of the characters are casted and the casting for those characters will remain open while we work on EP1 & EP2.

  • Suzuna Kagura Role

    I didn't think I made this completely clear, so I've changed the profile and I'm posting an update to everyone who auditioned or plans to audition for Suzuna Kagura. The casted VA for Suzuna Kagura will be required to sing a short (1 min) version of an English translation of Heinrich Heine's "The Lorelei" for EP4. This is the Japanese translation used in the anime for reference.   • June 23 Update

    Not much to report about the casting itself, but just some more information related to the project. The fandub project Twitter has been created @CaligulaEnglish ! Spread the word if you'd like! The first entry of my Dev Log has been published in the project Tumblr blog @caligula-english. This one's pretty basic, just my introductions and my hopes for the outcome of this project, but I'll document many other aspects of the process here as we go on. The VA reference video for the other half of the cast is now up! OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:

A 2nd Year student on the verge of an awakening. He's 17 in Mobius and has been trapped there for one year. His appearance in Mobius is that of a little-known deceased celebrity from the real world. Izuru is withdrawn and emotionless, demonstrating no concern or interest in associating with others.

DIRECTOR NOTES:

A mature, stoic voice. Has difficulty expressing emotions, but his voice is firm regardless.

  • I don't quite get what you're saying, but I believe you when you say that you guys took down Shonen-Doll.

  • You're living off your own efforts. That's way more respectable than someone who's sponging off his parents.

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:

Dressed in fanciful fairytale pastels, Sweet-P is both Mobius' premier fashion icon and an Ostinato Musician. She is distinguished by her long eyelashes and big, beautiful eyes. Just like her fashion, Sweet-P's songs exhibit a delicate, feminine quality. Some girls go absolutely nuts over her music.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
A high, cutesy, childlike voice befitting of her theme. The cute front she puts up tends to fall apart when provoked, though, revealing an unpleasant, unfeminine tone to her voice.

  • You do have a fairy name, don't you? I can't imagine someone who doesn't have one trying to attend the secret tea party.

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:

Shonen-Doll is a young boy who dwells in Mobius' enormous library, choosing to competely isolate himself from the outside world. He always wears a low-hanging hood that obscures his face and hides his expressions. Sneering at the masses, he writes gloomy, violent songs that attack people with social lives, who he interprets as weak for having to work in a flock in order to accomplish anything worthwhile. He engages a lot of difficult concepts in his work and has a strong group of fanatical devotees who tend to embrace solitude and individuality and see his music as salvation.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
A very young, quite boyish voice. Can be played by a male or female actor. 
Typically quiet, dark and brooding. Can get over dramatic if emotional.

  • It's true that isolation can feel comforting. You can get lost in your own world without facing harm from others.

  • My name is Shonen-Doll. The one who will guide you all down the right path.

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:

Mirei lives an idle life of luxury, fawned over by male followers inside her stronghold in Mobius' Marine Resort.
She is an arrogant and selfish debutante who behaves as though she is the center of the world; however (except for her personality) she truly is exceptional at everything.
She boasts an immense popularity based on her goregous appearance and exceptional musical genius.
She is so obsessed with being number one that she even sees µ, the absolute idol inside of Mobius, as her rival.

A young woman with a preppy manner of speech, her official description describes her character pretty well. 



  • I'll show you who the most noble and charming one in this world is! 

  • No matter where I go, there she is dancing and singing in that high-pitched voice. It offends my sense of beauty.

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION: 

Ike-P is a 2nd Year student that attends the same school as the main characters. He's a classmate of Izuru who definitely looks like he's in a band. He is a natural narcissist who has a justified confidence in his looks -- he's always striking a pose just to show off. He's popular with girls and always wants to improve himself. For some reason, he's constantly plotting against Izuru. His distinct style sometimes makes him unapproachable.

He is usually brash and overconfident, with a naturally loud voice.

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION: 

A law-abiding hero who adores justice, he executes those who rebel in Mobius. He skillfully wields shadows and knives to punish the wicked and the rebellious. He serves as µ's personal bodyguard due to his unique and effective combat abilities. He often does and says awkwardly theatrical things, such as, "he's the weakest of us Ostinato Musicians," which makes it difficult for others to respond. There is a theory that his name, apparence, and even combat abilities are identical to that of an anime character that was popular a few years ago.

DIRECTOR NOTES:

Deep and dark voice. As stated, he constantly acts like an action movie character, dramaticizing everything he says. However, despite calling himself a hero, he sounds more like a villain.

  • Rogues who resent this world, to think that you would come on your own volition to meet your end... This place shall serve as your graveyard.

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION: 

In Mobius, Marie is a 2nd Year student and classmate of the protagonist. She is an exceptional honors student with a gentle demeanor that makes her approachable. Even while participating in the Go-Home Club's occasionally dubious activities, she watches over the main characters without too much prying. This is particularly true for the main character, whom she supports as a close friend. She is destined to be caught in the conflict between the Go-Home Club and the Ostinato Musicians. 

DIRECTOR NOTES: 

While she is usually polite and friendly, on the other side of the coin is a completely different personality: as "Wicked", she is unstable, has a nasty voice, and enjoys chaos and others' emotional strife and suffering.

  • (normal) Morita-san is so obsessed with social media that she doesn't have many real friends… Please befriend her, if possible. 

  • (as "Wicked") Well, thanks to you, now they're all gonna die! Brutally, and by my hands! Ahahahaha! What a screw-up…!

Thorn is the leader of the Ostinato Musicians.
Thorn is a lovely young girl with a sickly appearance. She appears before the protagonist's party in an uncanny, phantasmal way -- she always shows up where she couldn't possibly be.
She is the oldest and first composer of µ's songs, known for her enormously popular dark and brooding love songs.
µ trusts Thorn completely and obediently follows her orders.

DIRECTOR NOTES:
Typically a mature, calm and composed voice. An intelligent and calculating character, her voice always has a hint of gloom in it. 


  • µ… preserving Mobius is the greatest desire of the Ostinato Musicians: we won't let it be destroyed.

  • Why return to a place filled with pain, sadness, and despair when you're just going to get hurt the same way again?

  • (angry) If you want to go back to the real world and continue to suffer, then so be it. You can't stop us or die with us.

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:


µ is a vocal synthesizer software that will obediently sing anything her user inputs.

Little by little, a seed of consciousness and self-awareness germinated within her. The songs people told her to sing alerted her to the agony of reality, so she created the eternally-youthful world of Mobius in order to save a tortured humanity.

Now she flies throughout Mobius, bringing bliss to all she meets and ensuring that the smiles never end.

A high, light voice with a melodic sound.
Portrayed as cheery, very kind and compassionate, she is optimistic, good-natured, and is always looking to grant everyone's wishes and desires.

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:

She's a virtuadoll that was created around the same time as µ.

She was forced to take a smaller form in Mobius because of µ’s vast power.

She wants to stop µ, who has become steadily more unhinged since creating Mobius, and return to the real world. To this end, she selects the main characters and grants them the ability to fight.

In contrast to the lovely, immaculate, and perfectionist µ, her personality is bright, cheerful, and casual, which makes it easy for her to make friends.


DIRECTOR NOTES:
Bright, childish, energetic high voice. The easiest comparison to make would be to the Powerpuff Girls.

He is prone to philosophical thoughts and has a lethargic demeanor. He hides deep hopelessness and a strong desire for the real world behind his sleepy-looking eyes.

DIRECTOR NOTES:
A deep, low voice. His typical voice is not gruff, but rather mellow.

  • All that matters is that everyone here wishes to go back to their actual homes. The same holds true for you, yes?

  • The way you lead is impressive… You may be quiet, but you do what needs to be done.

Kotaro is a nosy boy whose cheerful attitude doesn't fit his large build. He often sets the mood at the Go-Home Club. Kotaro simply can’t leave people alone if they need help. His favorite words are "love" and "friendship." He has a deep respect for his father and does not hesitate to say that his dream is to become a rescue worker.

A very bold and outspoken voice. Though he tends to be excitable and impulsive, he generally means well. 

  • …You're a good man. Sure, I'll convince him, no prob. You can rely on me!

  • 'Course not! We just wanna go back home, and that's what we're gonna do! Ain't a damn thing wrong with that!

OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION:

She's a quiet girl that always has a forlorn look on her face... She has trouble maintaining eye contact when she speaks. She's timid, but once she sets her mind to something she'll always find a way to achieve it. When she's determined, her voice is sometimes so loud that people around her have to cover their ears or risk deafness.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE:

A quiet, sweet voice. She's friendly but tends to be socially awkward. Singing is her hobby and she is a member of the school choir.

Kensuke is a 1st Year high school student. He is 16 in Mobius and has been there for two years. An Ostinato Musician who produces songs for µ, Kensuke is an enemy of the Go-Home Club. His battle with the Go-Home Club forces him to question his own existence and he ultimately decides to join his former enemies in their quest to return home.

A youthful voice. He often acts very smug, sly, and occasionally playful.
