Terror at Camp Roanoke
Project Overview
At Session Zero Heroes, we believe in the power of storytelling through tabletop roleplaying games and use a wide variety of systems to create these stories, which we share through the podcast medium. From hilarious to emotional, our stories and themes come in all shapes and sizes and help us to create amazing series and one-shots for your listening pleasure!
We have published a variety of series from long-form (10+ episodes) to one-shots (5 Episodes or less), all of which have featured unique, homebrewed, original stories told through tabletop roleplaying games. Some of these have already featured vocal talent from right here at CCC. We've had an incredible time featuring these amazing voices, and we love working with the community here at CCC. We'd equally love to have you join us and feature you in this upcoming one-shot: Terror at Camp Roanoke.
Each year, during the month of October, as our way of celebrating the Halloween holiday, we at SZH feature a one-shot using the Monster of the Week system and tell a terrifying tale of horror and spooks (while keeping a pretty light, fun, goofy, and otherwise entertaining atmosphere to it). In Terror at Camp Roanoke, there is a historical element that will be told at the beginning and end of each episode that will help the listeners discover the secrets and background of the story that the modern-day players will be playing through. We need YOUR help to tell that story and unlock these secrets!

Richard Ancok is the primary antagonist of the historical backstory to our tale. He seeks wealth and power in the "New World" and is willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Throughout these fragments of the past, he will be slowly but surely losing his sanity. If you audition for this role, be aware of that. His tone and voice will slowly descend into madness along with him as the power he weilds leads him to take darker and darker steps.
I'm imagining a younger male individual with a hint of British accent to his voice, although an early American accent is equally appropriate.

The voyage has concluded, and we find ourselves upon the shores of this "New World."
(Frustrated) We are sitting ducks! And his reasoning! To sail all the way back across that treacherous ocean, risking storms and Spanish dogs, when the solution lies practically at our feet!
(Starting to lose his sanity, speaking his poetry) Fourteen they were, when Drake did sail, a meager flock indeed, But one by one, the darkness calls, and plants a fatal seed.
This character is a real-life, existing figure from history, so feel free to check him out and his history for whatever inspiration you feel you need. I'm imagining him to have a light British accent (or early American accent) as well as a slightly hoity-toity tone since he is, in fact, a captain of a presitious vessel.

A grim discovery has been made this day. After a protracted voyage, bearing much-needed supplies for the hopeful souls who sought to establish a foothold on this Roanoke Isle, we have arrived to find… silence.
A chilling fear gripped my men, and indeed, my own heart. Could this be the work of the native tribes?
There is an ill omen about this place, a sense of lingering horror that chills the very marrow. I dare not linger here longer than necessary
John White was a real-life historical figure, so if you want to gain any inspiration for this part, feel free to check out his history. With that being said, he's a hopeful man filled with positivity and excitement as his expedition lands in the "New World." So I recommend a positive, cheerful tone to this character.

Ship's Log: July 22nd, Anno Domini 1587 The Hopewell, anchored off Roanoke Isle
A new beginning dawns upon this land. After a long voyage, we have finally set foot on Roanoke Island, a company of souls eager to build a life and establish a true English settlement.
May this venture prove more fruitful and enduring than the last. The work begins with the morning light.
Frederick only has one portion of this story, but in it, he showcases a lot of his character. He is a gruff man, poorly tempered, and easily angered. When angry (which he is in his portion), he is able to contain it behind raised tone and angry words, without going into a full shouting match (at least at the start). He's more than happy to voice his concerns and dislikes.

To Whom It May Concern, and Especially to the Craven Scoundrel Responsible for the Disturbing Scribblings Found Within My Dwelling
Let it be known throughout this fledgling colony that I, Frederick Barneby, have had the peace of my family most grievously disrupted by the discovery of a vile and unsettling poem hidden within the very floorboards of the cabin allotted to us.
Therefore, I, Frederick Barneby, do hereby demand that the author of this malicious drivel cease and desist from any further such actions.
Eleanor Dare is a real historical figure and the daughter of John White. If you would like any additional information on her to help inspire you for this role, I encourage you to look her up. I imagine her, much like her father John White, as a hopeful and optimistic settler excited to begin a new life in the New World. Even when things go wrong, she attempts to remain optimistic, until the final chapter of the story's background, in which everything falls apart, leaving her and the rest of the settlers in an incredibly dire situation. She will need to fall into utter fear and terror at that point, so be aware of that when auditioning.

Another turn of the season here on Roanoke, and despite Father’s continued absence, we have persevered.
(Nervous) The days grow shorter, the air colder, and with them comes a terror that gnaws at the very soul of our settlement.
(Terrified) Father… oh, Father, if you ever find this… if you ever read these words stained with my tears and fear… please, I beg you, turn back. Do not come to what remains of this cursed place.
I'm going to put together a short pre-mystery fiction that introduces the listeners to the horrors to come. Imagine the beginning of most horror movies or horror-show episodes where we see a sort of "NPC" who gets-got by the monster, which opens up the story.
The construction worker is by no means anything I want to overly establish as far as a specific voice or anything like that. So feel free to have fun with it and make it unique.

"Sorry it's just, I saw something in the dirt and figured I should check it out. That's what the camp owner guy said to do right?"
"A when-deeg-what?"
"Hello? Is someone there?" *Terrified scream*

"Hey! We're already behind schedule why did you stop digging?"
"Oh, interesting. Yeah there's all sorts of relics that were left behind by the tribes and early settlers scattered across this island."
"There's an old legend that says that some sort of monster killed all the settlers that stayed on this island. Maybe a Wendigo!"
