Star Wars: Revan (KOTOR 2 Machinima Movie)

Star Wars: Revan (KOTOR 2 Machinima Movie)

Project Overview

Star Wars: Revan is a feature-length (85 minutes approx.) machinima movie created using a heavily modded version of the videogame Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 (KOTOR 2 for short). Knowledge of the story and characters of the two KOTOR games is helpful, but is not strictly required for voice actors. The dual-narrative plot revolves around a Jedi, Revan, whose nightmares and erased memories drive him to go out in search of dark forces, and the Sith Lord Scourge, a high-ranking solider who is drawn into a dangerous world of secrecy and backstabbing at the heart of the Sith Empire.

I've been working on this project for a long time, having started writing the script in October of 2017. Since then the movie has gone through multiple rewrites and changes, and I was hesitant to put out a casting call until I was positive I'd be able to finish it. As it stands, I've now shot and edited the entire movie, so there is absolutely no chance of the project being abandoned or delayed; the voice lines for the characters are the last things I need to complete the film. My aim is for the movie to be uploaded to Youtube in mid-July to late August.

If you have any questions about the project, you can PM me here. Thanks!

The central character and primary protagonist of the movie, Revan's life has been long and complicated. Originally a Jedi, he left the Order to fight in the Mandalorian Wars, after which he travelled to Drommund Kaas, fell under The Emperor's influence, and became a Sith Lord. Several years later, a betrayal from his apprentice left Revan near death, and the Jedi Council erased his memory of his fall to the Dark Side, rendering him a Jedi once more. Despite this, Revan's memory is starting to return, and his relationship with the Jedi Order remains frosty: having shunned both the light and the dark, Revan exists as a character whose loyalties and powers are atypical; his experience of being both a Jedi and Sith gives him incredible strength, but he fights only for the safety of his family and the galaxy at large, foregoing the philosophical dogma that drives many of the other characters.

Revan usually speaks in a calm, even manner and is rarely angry. He also occasionally lapses into moments of self-doubt and disillusionment.

  • It’s recognizable because people fear it. When they see me in my mask, they don’t see me as a human. They see me as a killing machine.

  • [Quiet; Broken] I didn’t- I wouldn’t-

  • I have learned to set my fear aside. Apparently you have not.

Lord Scourge is a powerful, high-ranking Sith soldier in the burgeoning Sith Empire. As a loyal servant to The Emperor, he is asked to root out assassins attempting to kill Darth Nyriss, a powerful Sith Lord and  a member of The Emperor's closest circle. However, he quickly realises that the situation is far more complex than he realises: Nyriss is leading a coup against The Emperor. As The Emperor's subordinate, Scourge is caught in a moral dilemma, and has to decide where his allegiances lie: with his master The Emperor, or the clever and dangerous Nyriss. As the film progresses, Scourge becomes increasingly disillusioned with the Sith, and becomes more and more of an ally to the Jedi Revan and Meetra Surik. Scourge also has a reputation as a strong warrior, which often results in him being sent on dangerous, combat-heavy missions.

Scourge speaks with a hard, sneering tone that occasionally (especially towards the end of the film) turns softer and more vulnerable.

  • The strong take from the weak-that is the core of our philosophy. Doing it on a scale of millions doesn’t change anything.

  • [Shocked, nervous] Jedi!

  • [Horrified, Desolate Whisper] What happened to this place?

Also known as the Jedi Exile, Meetra Surik is the protagonist of KOTOR 2 and serves as a key character in the film. Having returned from her exile following the events of KOTOR 2, she goes on a quest to rescue Revan, who has disappeared whilst trying to follow his nightmares. A determined and unwavering Jedi, Surik is more loyal to the Jedi Order than Revan and is, like almost all Jedi, deeply distrustful of the Sith.

Meetra Surik speaks with a strong, resounding, heroic voice.

  • Someone who knows this place. I’m looking for a friend, you see, and he went missing around these parts.

  • This place… [Shudders] Let’s keep moving.

  • [Confidently] That’s right. And you’re going to tell me where you’re keeping Revan captive.

A cold, calculating Sith Lord, Darth Nyriss is one of the most powerful people in the Sith Empire. Ruthless and enigmatic, she is obsessed with manipulation: over the course of the film, she expertly orchestrates a coup to bring down The Emperor by enlisting the help of Lord Scourge (whom she dispatches to deal with most of the actual fighting involved). However, this habit of secrecy and betrayal is also her key weakness: she lacks the strong and steadfast ideological commitment that her Jedi enemies, Revan and Meetra Surik, share, leaving her squabbling amongst her rivals instead of focusing all of her attention on The Emperor.

Nryiss' voice is a low, smooth rasp that is often laden with a shrewd, smug haughtiness.

  • Oh, you still have some time left. And so do I.

  • Interesting. I think he’s actually forgotten me.

  • [Regretful, Haunted]: I once thought that too.

Role assigned to: DarthValeria

The ruler of the Sith Empire, The Emperor is as powerful as he is mysterious, and serves as the primary antagonist of the movie. Having seized the throne of the Sith Empire after the it was massacred in the Great Hyperspace War, The Emperor then proceeded to rule the Sith with an iron fist for over 1000 years, operating from the shadows and consolidating his power to eventually rise up against the Republic. Rarely seen but ever-present on the lips of the Sith Lords who serve under him, The Emperor terrifies both his allies and enemies alike, as he has a complete disregard for any and all life in the galaxy. His patience borders on paranoia: he has spent centuries amassing his strength, and in doing so he developed a crushing, all-consuming fear of death. Few have had a personal audience with The Emperor and lived to tell the tale, as he is liable to kill any subordinate who displeases him, slaying them with a wave of his hand.

The Emperor speaks very slowly and has a strong air of menace to his voice, which is a low but smooth rumble.

  • [Coldly, Threateningly] Do not presume to tell me what I can and cannot do.

  • Resistance is futile, Lord Scourge. Surely you must know that by now.

  • I know you will die trying.

Role assigned to: Rebecca Durst

Bastila Shan is Revan's wife and a powerful Jedi in her own right. Troubled by her husband's nightmares, Bastila implores him to seek the help of the Jedi council, which Revan refuses. When he and Canderous set off to discover the source of Revan's dreams, Bastila stays behind to care for their new family. Later, when Revan disappears, she tasks the Jedi Exile, Meetra Surik, with searching for her missing husband.

Bastila talks fairly quickly and normally has a light, warm tone to her voice. I've linked a sample of her previous voiced appearance in KOTOR as a guide to the kind of performance I'm looking for here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ElY6yiuxPBQeGrPVhC3M084c-lzhiuNo/view?usp=sharing

  • I know, it’s just… seeing you in that mask is unsettling. It reminds me too much of who you were.

  • Meetra Surik, the Jedi Exile, here at my doorstep. You said we needed to talk?

  • You should take T3-M3 along with you-he spent months exploring Nathema looking for parts to repair the Ebon Hawk.

Role assigned to: John Donahue

Canderous Ordo is a Mandalorian soldier: a strong and brave warrior. A veteran of the Mandalorian Wars, Canderous fled in shame after the Mandalorian's defeat at the hands of the then-Sith Lord Revan. Reuniting with him during the events of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Canderous and Revan became close allies, and by the time the movie begins Canderous resides peacefully on Coruscant, fully retired from fighting. When Revan's erased memories start resurfacing, however, Canderous agrees to join Revan on his quest to find and stop the evil he fears is rising.

Canderous' voice is gruff yet confident; the bark of an old, experienced fighter. I've linked a sample of his previous voiced appearance in KOTOR as a guide to the kind of performance I'm looking for here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1onTwQd8xoY1yVp3vN6ff3sUb_CMxAIby

  • Heh. Just you and me on a frozen wasteland. Sounds like fun.

  • A true Mandalorian would respect their enemy. Especially if they lost to him.

  • I abandoned my people, Revan. You think I can just stroll back to them?

Atris

Role assigned to: Rebecca Durst

A respected member of the Jedi Order, Atris is a proudly orthodox Jedi Master who is wholly committed to battling the Dark Side of the Force. Revan's stint as a Sith Lord and Meetra Surik's decision to follow him made both Jedi irredeemably corrupted in Atris' eyes, and she now views them with extreme suspicion, refusing to help Revan in his search for Meetra Surik and fiercely admonishing him for his past actions. Despite her staunch opposition to the Dark Side, Atris herself can be haughty and bitter, and tends to think in terms black and white and light and dark: a dangerously reductionist worldview to apply to such complex figures as Revan and Scourge.

Atris' voice is measured and cultured, but is often tinged with an overtone of curt arrogance. I've linked a sample of her previous voiced appearance in KOTOR 2 as a guide to the kind of performance I'm looking for here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1EnaSO5Y0B-HZdW81UFohivnG0BM16nCi

  • [Bitterly] I should have guessed it was you.

  • [Furious] You… you would have the audacity?! You would dare to search for her after what you did?!

  • Ah, not quite. Some of the ships survived. You and Surik are still alive, after all. But both the Mandalorians and the Republic sustained terrible losses. You sacrificed most of your own fleet to secure victory.

Role assigned to: Tpknapp

Darth Xedrix is a high-ranking Sith Lord and, like Darth Nyriss, sits on the Dark Council, The Emperor's closest confidants. This does not, however, protect him from Nyriss' constant scheming: she intends to frame him for the coup against The Emperor that she has masterminded. To that end, she sends Scourge to duel Xedrix, as being a vain and ruthless Sith Lord he will not take the fall for the coup willingly.

Xedrix is a relatively minor role. His voice is brash and arrogant.

  • Hmph. So you’re the young upstart who say he’s got information for me.

  • No? What is it then? Blackmail? Extortion?

  • And she sends a mere child to challenge me? My, my, she must be desperate.

While Revan and Canderous are journeying through the Outer Rim they come across a Mandalorian soldier. This Mandalorian, unlike Canderous, is wracked with bitterness at his people's defeat in the Mandalorian Wars, and upon recognising Revan engages him in a standoff before trying and failing to kill him.

The Mandalorian is a relatively large minor role (he has comparatively slightly more lines despite only appearing in one scene). He speaks sharply and has an angry, caustic edge to his voice.

  • That doesn’t erase what he did. Thousands of Mandalorians are dead because of him; we lost the war because of him!

  • Don’t look like nobody. Turn round so I can see your face.

  • I’m not here to kill you. Just him.

Role assigned to: Wyatt Henry

The Imperial Guard are The Emperor's personal soldiers. After a brutal, intensive training regime, they are bound to The Emperor's will, ensuring their absolute obedience to him (and enabling The Emperor to issue orders to them telepathically). This particular Imperial Guard warns Lord Scourge of the risk of demanding an audience from The Emperor.

The Imperial Guard is a very minor role. He speaks in a dull, trancelike monotone.

  • If The Emperor feels his time has been wasted, you will not leave this Citadel alive.

  • State your name and business.

  • You summoned me, my Lord?
