Sonic Adventure Re-Voiced Mod

Sonic Adventure Re-Voiced Mod

Project Overview

Hello everyone! Just the other day I was playing through Sonic Adventure, one of my favorite games that didn't age too well, and one thing in particular that aged poorly is the voice acting. The direction is shoddy in most ares, the performances mediocre at best, and the audio quality of many of the voice files is sub-standard, with background noise and mouth clicking present throughout many of them. Sometimes, you can even hear music that doesn't belong in the scene. So I thought to myself, "Why not try and fix those issues myself?", and that is the basis of this casting call. To be clear, this is not a fandub in the traditional sense. This will not be going on YouTube or some other video sharing site. The files you record will be sent to me, where I will convert them into .adx files that can be loaded into the PC version of Sonic Adventure DX. These files will then be the ones the game uses as opposed to the original voice files. The goal of this project is to create an improved experience for Sonic Adventure, where the poor voice acting and direction can be rather jarring at times. The final product will be released on the websites ModDB and GameBanana, with instructions for installation once the mod is available, though I can tell you right now that the PC version of SADX is required, and the Better SADX mod and its mod loader are highly encouraged as well.

Every role in the game is up for grabs, except for Knuckles the Echidna, for whom I will provide the voice. The line totals may be subject to change, as I will attempt to determine how many of the lines are not used in the final game to lessen the amount of work on you all. As it stands, each major character has over 100 lines of dialogue, with Sonic and Tikal each eclipsing the 300 mark. That is to say that this will be a big project and requires a certain level of commitment. Please be ready for that. I will also probably cast understudy roles for the major characters as well. Extra/background characters, as they have sometimes as little as one line, will be chosen from some of the runner up auditions that don't make the cut or filled in by the understudies.

Please note that some characters will have more than the typical three audition lines. This is intentional, so please record all audition lines in your audition to ensure I get the best possible gauge on your performance.

According with my desire to see this mod, and by extension its VA's, improve over the original wherever possible, there are several requirements that must be met for me to consider casting you.

1. Excellent audio quality is a must. No background noise, no reverb, no laptop mics, no headset mics and no phone mics. If your audio quality is crap, I will not consider casting you. I want this mod to be an improvement, not a downgrade. You may be able to pull off the perfect Sonic, but that doesn't matter if your recording environment or equipment are low quality. Remember that.

2. You must be okay with live direction. I cannot stress this enough. Part of the reason so many of the performances suffered in the original was a lack of clear direction. As someone who is very familiar with the game, I believe I can provide the direction necessary to ensure each and every VA gives an excellent performance, but you must be willing to work with me to make that possible.

3. I don't want you to replicate past actors.  Or really any other actor from the Sonic series. That said, you will not lose points for doing so. However, just know that what matters to me more than anything is your ability to act. An original take that is excellently acted will always surpass a great impression with little emotion.

4. You will need either a Discord or Skype account. This is so I can live direct you. It is up to your personal preference which one we use. I will send you the script through CCC upon casting and you will need to let me know which communication option you prefer and how to contact you through your preferred communication option. I will then work with you to set aside times where I can live direct you.

5. Don't flake out on me. Once cast please, please show up for scheduled direction times and/or don't bail on the project without an adequate excuse. I am an understanding guy. If there is something going on you can tell me and I will be more than happy to work with you and accommodate any delays. However, too many delays, even with valid excuses, will eventually lead to me finding a replacement.

6. Be committed and prepared. We will not just be doing the story or cutscenes, but all voice files in the game data. That includes hints, tutorials, menu screen voices, and character grunts and death sounds. This is a lot more work of course, but I believe it will be worth it in the long run. If that level of commitment is too much for you to handle, please don't audition. I will try and omit files that are not used in the final game, but it will still be a lot of lines.

7. Have fun with it and don't be afraid to ask for feedback. Lastly, don't let the list of rules and requirements intimidate you. I may want this done well, but that doesn't mean we can't all have fun doing it. I will also try to offer feedback on any auditions that request it. If you want private feedback, then feel free to message me through the site. I am just a poor college student though, so please bear with me if it takes a while to get to you. Good luck everyone!

Latest Updates

  • Auditions Now Closed

Well, the deadline has passed and the time to cast has come! I want to thank everyone who auditioned for this project. 200+ auditions from over 100 people is awesome and I'm thrilled you all decided to audition for my project. That said, casting will work like this. I will be downloading the audio of the people I think are best suited for each role in order to do a few tricks with audio clean up to make sure everything will potentially sound good in the final product. Your audio will not be used for any other reason or purpose, so rest assured. Once that is done, I will contact who I think is best suited for each role on Casting Call (or Discord if I happen to have your info) to address any potential concerns I may have about audio quality, inflections and the ability to yell without reverb or peaking in order to make sure nothing will adversely impact the final product, so be on the look out for any messages from me over the next day. Finally, one thing I will need to ask some of you is if you will be able to commit to a Sonic Adventure 2 mod as well. I originally did not think I would be able to do this due to the more complicated file formats of SA2, but a friend of mine has offered to help me in that regard. So those of you who I want to cast for the roles of Sonic, Tails, Amy and Eggman will need to let me know if you can do this for yet another heavy workload in the coming months. Naturally of course, this means that I will be holding another casting call down the line for characters from Sonic Adventure 2, such as Shadow and Rouge. So, if you didn't make the cut this time, don't let it get you down and be sure to keep an eye out for another casting call down the line so you can try again. I'm looking forward to getting the recording for this mod rolling later this week. Thanks again everyone for helping me realize this project. It means a lot to me. -SeannyBravo
  • Feedback + Over 100 Auditions

I've gotten a lot of feedback requests for auditions, but I've not been able to oblige everyone to this point thanks to college work. However, I will be sure to give feedback to everyone who has asked for it over this coming weekend. That way, anybody who wants to re-audition will have ample time to do so. Also, I want to say thanks everyone for getting this project to 100+ auditions. I'm thrilled to have so many enthusiastic auditions and I know I'll have some tough decisions to make once the project closes. Good luck!

The titular Blue Blur himself, Sonic thinks quickly and runs even quicker. He's the fastest thing alive and he knows it, so it leads to him having a bit of an arrogant streak. However, he cares deeply for his friends and has a strong sense of justice that leads to him clashing constantly with Dr. Eggman.

Just about everyone knows what type of voice Sonic has. It's a voice that many people can pull off, but few can pull it off consistently well enough to be convincing in the role. It's more than just getting the voice type down, but nailing the inflections and being able to emote without losing that special Sonic voice. Being able to say one or two lines perfectly is meaningless if you can't emote with any of the others. As far as pitch goes, a voice in the medium to upper-medium range is preferable.

325 lines

  • Aw yeah! This is happening! (excited)

Where's this? ...Hm? ...That light. I think it's trying to show me something. (confused, curious)

  • Hey there bolt brain! You better give Amy to me or I’ll squash ya! (angry)

  • I'll show you what the Chaos Emeralds can really do! (fired up)

Sonic's best friend and a brilliant mechanic, Tails is a young boy that idolizes Sonic to the highest degree. This leads to him depending on Sonic a lot, something that he desires to grow out of and stand on his own strengths.

Because Tails is a young boy, it would be preferable for him to be voiced by a girl who can pull off a childlike boyish voice. However, I will not preclude boys from auditioning if you truly think you can pull Tails' voice off. His voice should be in the lower-high to mid-high range.

253 lines

  • Hey Sonic! Long time no see huh? (friendly, enthusiastic)

That usually means trouble coming from you! (angry, suspicious)

Eggman: Give me that Chaos Emerald, or else!

    Or else what, huh? (defiant)

  • I've changed a lot since I started hanging with Sonic, but I can't depend on him forever. (reflective, slightly nervous)

  • I know I can do this by myself. Ok Eggman! Bring it on! (fired up, inspired)

Amy Rose is Sonic's self declared girlfriend and is madly in love with the Blue Blur. She is fun loving and romantic, but she's also a little bit of a hot head. She serves as the protector of an innocent little bird that escaped from Eggman's clutches and has to contend with avoiding the dangerous robot Zero for most of her story.

Amy is a young girl with an excitable personality and her voice should reflect that excitability. Pitch wise, her voice should be in the upper medium range, though slightly higher or lower pitches could work as well.

245 lines

  • Gee, I’m bored. Every day’s the same old thing. Same place, different day. I miss the good old days. Hanging out with my hero, Sonic. *dreamy sigh* (starts out with a bored tone that shifts over the last two lines into a dreamy and reminiscent one)

  • You idiot! How could you do this?! Now you're gonna get it! (royally pissed off)

  • I'm going to try my best too! Just watch me! I’ll make that Sonic respect me! And by that time it’s gonna be too late! *blows kiss* (fired up, determined)

Everyone's favorite character is here. There's not much that can be said about Big the Cat that hasn't been said a million times before. He has a severe mental handicap, loves fishing and is constantly chasing after his pet frog that wants nothing more than to escape to freedom. He's not really even that important to the story. His frog is more important to the overall narrative than Big is. Luckily for whoever gets cast, he has the lowest line count of any of the major characters.

Big is a character that pretty much any guy with even a medium voice can pull off. Imagine a drunk Barney with severe brain damage and you already have a pretty solid Big voice. It's not really gruff or anything like that, so avoid that if possible. The only other real piece of advice I have for Big is don't make him sound so stupid that we can't understand him at all. He's dumb, but he's not so much of a drooling simpleton that he can't talk.

125 lines

  • Froggy? I must save Froggy! (fearful, desperate)

  • Froggy? I don't like the looks of this place. If something happens now, there's no point to my rescuing you. I don't know who would bother to save us both. (calm tone as Big realizes that no one likes him enough to bother saving him)

  • Hooray! Froggy! Hehehehe! I won't let them take you away again! (happy as happy can be)

One of Eggman's robot minions that develops a conscience, Gamma is a fan favorite character despite his small amount of screen-time thanks to a compelling character arc. Unwilling to continue serving a cruel master without purpose, Gamma takes it upon himself to free his captive brothers from their enslavement to Eggman.

Gamma is not a character that requires a lot of emotion,  with his voice being primarily robotic in both sound and inflections. This is easier in theory to pull off than it is in practice, though it's still rather easy to emote for the typical Gamma line. That's why some of the lines I've chosen for this audition are relatively important in defining Gamma's character and therefore more challenging to pull off. For pitch, his voice should go no higher than the lower medium range, and a deeper voice is preferred. You can attempt to add a robotic filter to your audition if you want, but it is not required here.

127 lines

  • Does not compute. Why try to save that which is useless to you? Does not compute. (struggling to understand why Amy protects a small bird, because in his eyes, it's a useless animal)

  • Must determine location. Accessing data…no data found. Location unknown. This presents a problem. (slight realization at the end that it's problematic that he cannot determine where he is)

  • E-105 Zeta. Rescue complete. Units remaining…Gamma… (realization that in order to complete his mission, Gamma must destroy himself. One of the few times a genuine shift in Gamma's tone and voice can be felt)

Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik

Ivo Robotnik, better known as Dr. Eggman, is Sonic's arch nemesis and the primary antagonist of Sonic Adventure. He is a brilliant scientist and inventor that seeks world domination by any means necessary, including waking up an ancient and angry god of destruction.

There are two primary voices I've heard VA's attempt to do for Eggman. The gravelly and sinister type, or the more comical and boisterous type. I must stress that this era of Sonic plays more towards the sinister voice type with its writing and characterization of Eggman, so being able to pull off that sinister vibe is extremely important. There are some times in the game where comical Eggman can work, but they are few and far between, so auditions of that type will have a harder time making the cut. In terms of pitch, something in the upper levels of the deep range is preferable, and anything above a medium pitch is discouraged.

255 lines

  • You know nothing fool! It's Chaos! The God of Destruction! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! (mocking, but maniacal)

  • I'm finished. Chaos was defeated and now my Egg Carrier is ruined. ...No matter. I will destroy Station Square anyway! (starts out with a depressed/defeated tone, which shifts into a vengeful and anger filled tone)

  • You fool. Away. Before I make mincemeat out of you. (sinister, threatening. There's anger in his voice, but it's more subtle than over the top rage.)

Tikal the Echidna

Tikal the Echidna is Sonic Adventure's own little Navi clone, providing the player hints all throughout their journey. She also serves as a key focal point of the story with her connection to Chaos and the Master Emerald. Thanks to this pivotal role both as helper and key character, she has a ton of lines (see below). Personality wise, she is idealistic and sweet, believing instead that working things out peacefully instead of through violence is always the best option, a belief that often puts her at odds with her father.

As far as voice goes, Tikal is a young girl, though she is quite mature for her age.  Anything in the medium range would work, though you're welcome to experiment with a higher pitch as long as you keep it relatively relaxed and don't go overboard.

372 lines (Yes, Tikal has the most lines out of any character in Sonic Adventure. Ironically, this role is more of a commitment than Sonic. Be prepared for that before auditioning)

  • The servers are the seven Chaos. Chaos is power. Power enriched by the heart. The controller is the one who unifies the Chaos. (thinking out loud, reserved)

  • So, are you saying you can’t leave this place? I understand. Let me talk to my father again. There must be a better way to do this. Don’t worry my friends. I won’t let you down! (understanding, sympathetic tone that shifts into a more determined and fired up tone for the last line)

  • Greed is our enemy! Once it starts you will always want more! Please don't do this, I beg you! (desperate, pleading, fearful)

Pachacamac the Echidna/Male announcer

Role assigned to: TheLoneLogan

Pachacamac is a minor character in the grand scheme of things. He doesn't have many lines but I feel he is important enough to the story to include here. Pachacamac is Tikal's father and the leader of the Knuckles clan of echidnas. He seeks to do what is best for his people, though how much of that desire has been corrupted by greed is up for debate. The male announcer works at the Mystic Ruins train station and he has four lines. I'm confident that if you can pull of Pachacamac that you can pull off a more reserved announcer so don't about not having any announcer lines to audition with.

For Pachacamac's voice, I'd like something a bit on the older side. He's at least middle-aged, but is likely a bit older than that. As far as pitch goes, anything in the lower portion of the medium range would work, but feel free to experiment with lower pitches and varying levels of gruffness. For the announcer, if you must record something for him, then just remove whatever gruffness you give to Pachacamac.

15 lines

  • Tikal. The seven emeralds are essential to our survival. It is for the good of all our people. (calm but stern, trying to reassure his daughter)

  • We need those seven emeralds to give us total power! It's power for the people! And they are your people too you know?! We must get that emerald! (furious at his daughter's disobedience, blinded by his greed)

  • Ahhhhh! It's a monster! NOOOOOOOOOOOO! (fear that devolves into horror as he is killed by Chaos)

Narrator/Female announcer

Role assigned to: Kenkoy

The narrator is the default menu voice that is enabled at the beginning of the game. The female announcer works at the Station Square train station. There's not much emotion that goes into either character, though that doesn't mean that you should be monotone. A friendly but reserved tone would work.

The narrator and announcer are women in the game so that's how they'll be played in the mod. Something a little bit in the low range that sounds mature is ideal, but as long as you don't sound like a child, really anything can work here.

23 lines

  • Select a file. Select a character. (calm)

  • Sound test. You can listen to various music tracks. (calm)

  • The train headed for the Mystic Ruins will be departing soon. (slightly more firm. Make sure no one misses their train, but don't yell)
