Smiles of Insanity (A Mario Fan Film)

Fawful is an eccentric young Beanish prodigy who excels in science and evil schemes. He suffers from a few insecurities and mental disorders such as an inferiority complex, schizophasia and anger management issues, but at heart he is merely a confused child. He was guided down a path of evil his entire life by his now-deceased mentor, Cackletta, and went on to attempt world domination only to be stopped by the very same people who caused his mentor's death.

Fawful is:

His voice should sound high-pitched (unbroken) and heavily accented with an indistinguishable blend of foreign accents; somewhat innocent and very exciteable; don't try too hard to sound like a boy if you're a girl. Feel free to include lines from his games. If you're looking for inspiration, the closest things you can listen to are Omi from Xiaolin Showdown or this impression. Don't forget to add some noises such as grunts, growls, mad giggles, passive-agressive sighing, throat-clearing, squeals and full-blown screams.

Dimentio is an incredibly powerful ex-court jester who went insane more than a thousand years ago when subjected to intense heartbreak. He has a flawed but strong sense of justice (although he can be extremely sadistic) driven by his desire to "fix" the imperfection in the worlds by erasing everything in existence and replacing it all with a new, perfect, loveless world with him as its king. He is very much a performer and loves to add flair wherever he can, treating his life like a show filled with drama, action and magic tricks.

Dimentio is:

• the largest role in the film with the most amount of lines, many of which are very long

• not required to swear

• required to show romantic love (despite his disdain for it)

His voice should be young and healthy-sounding, preferably with an English accent; he should sound mysterious, whimsical, arrogant and almost always amused; he is extremely patronising and even a little flamboyant, but make sure you can still be serious at times; if possible, try to make him quite seductive, even. Feel free to include lines from his canonical appearance. I couldn't really find anything quite like what I'm looking for so you can use my impression as a reference if you need one. Don't forget to add noises such as screams, grunts, growls, mad laughter and smooth laughter.

Mimi is a shapeshifter whose true form is an unageing green-skinned girl who can wind up her head and turn into a giant robot spider. She loves superficial things like jewels and money but is trying her best to improve herself as a person. She is extremely loyal to Blumiere and his old minions as her closest friends and loves them like a family.

Mimi is:

• probably the third-largest role in the film

• not required to swear

• required to show romantic love

Her voice should sound young and generally somewhat childish; like a typical teenager but able to pull off a horrifying creepy voice if possible; should definitely have an American accent. Feel free to include lines from her game appearance as well as the ones listed. Don't forget to add miscellaneous noises such as giggles, grunts, squeals and screams.

Mario is the typical hero of the story, but also not, being an Italian-American ex-plumber from Brooklyn. Everyone knows Mario; he's famous for his signature high jump and for saving the Mushroom Kingdom (and more) time and time again. Mario possesses many of the qualities of a hero such as selflessness, courage, caring and humility while also being quite an average person. He doesn't possess any supernatural powers, but rather benefits from the distorted gravity of the Mushroom Planet. He generally tries to have a happy-go-lucky attitude towards the hardships of life and dives into danger head-on.

Mario is:

• an average-sized role

• not yet required to show romantic love (though he may have to later)

His voice should sound as much like he does in the games as possible (and accent should go without saying); the iconic sound should not be lost. Sometimes it may need to be downplayed a little when he's being more serious. If you don't know how Mario usually sounds, you definitely need to listen to some of his voice clips. He doesn't actually have much dialogue in any of his games, but it would be good to add random sounds like screams, sighs, whoas, wowowows and wahoos.

Luigi is Mario's taller, shyer and more sensitive little brother. He is generally more afraid of things than his twin which leads people to view him as cowardly, but despite being in Mario's shadow to the public eye, he has helped his brother save the world time and time again with his superior speed and height in jumping. Luigi tries to be as friendly and helpful as possible wherever he can and cares deeply for all the important people in his life.

Luigi is:

• a medium-sized role

• not required to swear or show romantic love

His voice should sound the way it does in recent games; since his voice is generally less over-the-top than Mario's, he won't need to be as downplayed as him. If you don't know how Luigi sounds, definitely listen to some clips. Feel free to add any lines Luigi has been known to say. Don't forget to add sounds the variety of which you already know.

Bowser is usually the big bad of the story so he's not used to being thrown around and turned into a Koopa in distress. He is the large, powerful and arrogant fire-breathing king of the Koopas who kidnaps Princess Peach in pathetic attempts to win her love on an extremely regular basis. He has a deep-set hatred for Mario as his arch-rival since he always comes to Peach's rescue. Despite thinking of himself as the most badass evil villain in the world, deep down, he isn't actually the worst person.

Bowser is:

• not a very large role

• required to swear (if you consider that "swearing")

• required to show romantic love in his own weird way, albeit a love unrequited

His voice should be deep and gruff and growly, but not quite the Cookie Monster impression he had in Super Mario Sunshine; must have an American accent. Feel free to include lines from any of his canonical appearances. Try to imitate the sound and tone of any voice clips he has that aren't from Super Smash Bros. or Super Mario Sunshine. Don't forget to add common noises like roars, evil laughs, growls, barks and whining.

Peach is the gentle, benevolent ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. She is kind-hearted and loves her kingdom and her subjects and is generally nice to everyone she meets. She has strong moral beliefs and tries to help anyone in need to the best of her ability, but quite often finds herself more useless than she'd like to be. She is quite the typical target for abduction, so her usual reaction to getting kidnapped has grown a little downplayed.

Princess Peach is:

Her voice should be high-pitched and soft but not unreasonably so; a little more normal and human-sounding than her canonical voice; she should have an American accent, but not a very strong one. Feel free to include any lines from her games. To get an idea of what she should sound like, listen to her speaking voice from Super Mario Sunshine or the opening to Super Mario Galaxy. Don't forget to add noises like sighs, light screams, laughter and "MARIOOO!"

Blumiere is a kind, happy man who is very much grateful for all the things he is fortunate enough to have in life. He is very much a classy, polite, old-fashioned gentleman. He was once a villain who called himself Count Bleck, working towards the destruction of everything, but he recovered from the brink of insanity when he reunited with his long-lost love, whom he believed had been murdered. Up to this point, he was content living with his wife in a small cottage within an isolated world of hills and forests. He is very fond of his old minions and still feels guilty for the things he tried to do before.

Blumiere is:

His voice should be deep-ish and suave yet humble; has a mild French accent (not exaggerated, so no Broque Monsieur, please); he is generally calm and collected but gets understandably upset when touchy subjects are brought up. Feel free to include lines from his game appearance, which would be especially interesting if you were to choose Count Bleck lines. Don't forget to add in random noises like grunts and gasps and yelps (and maybe an evil "Bleh heh heh heh! BLECK!" if you feel like it).

Timpani is Blumiere's kind-hearted wife who was once transformed into a butterfly-like creature called a Pixl by Merlon after she was given amnesia and banished to an empty dimension by Blumiere's father as punishment for their forbidden love. She is extremely knowledgeable and tries to help wherever she can. She has extremely strong senses of loyalty and morality.

Timpani is:

• definitely required to show romantic love

Her voice is largely open to interpretation; both English and American accents acceptable. Feel free to include lines from her appearance in the game. Don't forget to add miscellaneous sounds such as gasps and others.

Nastasia is an officious ex-secretary who never had much of a life outside her job, which is understandable considering she was born into it after being transformed from her previous form as a bat, but it is a shame now that she's unemployed. She can be very judgemental of anyone. She has a generally stoic exterior but harbours deep love for all her friends in Blumiere's old group of minions and used to feel more towards Blumiere. She is very protective of the people she cares for and isn't afraid to hypnotise others into submission for their sakes.

Nastasia is:

• a relatively small role

• not yet required to swear (and probably won't ever be)

• not actually required to show romantic love

Her voice should sound like a businesswoman; she often goes up at the ends of her sentences, but not always; must have an American accent; sometimes irritated or tired-sounding and occasionally quite sassy. Feel free to include lines from her appearance in her game. She doesn't do much apart from maybe gasp indignantly, so there's no need to include random sounds.

O'Chunks is a beefy (or should I say chunky?) Scottish warrior who was once a general of an army tasked with smuggling a thousand-man squadron into enemy lines only to be sold out by a trusted advisor, resulting in the loss of all of his men; afterwards, Blumiere, as Count Bleck, took advantage of his following weakness to make him a minion. O'Chunks is loud and rough and loves alcohol, brawls and showing off, which oftentimes leads to him coming off as obnoxious or to people underestimating his intelligence. He has a strong sense of soldier's honour and loyalty that can't be quenched by anything.

His voice should sound loud, boisterous and very Scottish; there isn't much else I can say to describe it. Feel free to include lines from the game. Don't forget to add noises like robust screaming, shouting, hollering and more.

Toads are the small mushroom creatures that inhabit the Mushroom Kingdom. As a species, they generally frighten easily and scream a lot. They are also generally silly and a common source of comic relief, though some have been known to play more integral parts in the grand scheme of things (but not the ones that sound like this). Toads are also known to be very passive-aggressive when they are rejected in serving their primary purpose: giving tutorials.

Toad is:

• a multi-character role; since most Toads sound the same, you'll essentially be playing the whole species (as such, I may even cast multiple people in this role)

• not required to swear (it's optional; you can say "hell" or "heck" and it matters not)

• not yet required to show romantic love, but may be in future

Toads' voices are quite high-pitched and screechy; they definitely have American accents; difficult to describe. The only way to accurately convey how they should sound is to give an example, so have fun with that! Feel free to include any lines a Toad might say, whether from a game or not, and if you want to, add any of those sounds a Toad might make, too.

Merlon is an ancient sage who lives in the light half of the dimension between dimensions, Flipside. Merlon is very much an old wise man who lives in a hut filled with dusty books and crystal balls. Being extremely knowledgeable, he is always willing to help out when things go awry, albeit not willing to venture out into danger for himself, rather preferring to provide valuable intel about the past, present and future. He is an obvious parody of Merlin from Arthurian legend.

Merlon is:

• a very small role

• not required to show romantic love

His voice should sound old and knowledgeable and perhaps somewhat goofy at times; both British and American accents are acceptable. Feel free to add lines from any of his games. Though there aren't many random noises you might add, there are...ahem, "incantations" (if you know how those go).

Nolrem is Merlon's dark counterpart. Where Merlon is an optimist, Nolrem is more of a pessimist, although other than that, he is essentially identical to Merlon in all aspects. In fact, I will probably just cast the same voice actor in both Merlon and Nolrem's roles. Still, feel free to try out these lines as well.

Nolrem is:

• not required to swear, flirt, sing, yada yada

• pretty much a the-same-but-different Merlon

• preferably voiced by the same actor as Merlon

• apparently not very unique

His voice should sound just like Merlon's, though it might be nice if you decided to add a darker tone to the lines. He is by no means evil, though. Do what you will. Feel free to add lines from the game. You don't have to add random noises.

Jaydes is the queen of the Underwhere, a place where deceased souls are sent when their lives first end. She is the one in charge of weighing the sins of the dead and determining their rewards and punishments. She is quite strict and takes her job relatively seriously, especially when it comes to passing judgement on those who have done wrongdoings beyond redemption. She is an obvious parody of Hades, the ancient Greek god of the underworld.

Jaydes is:

• a tiny role; only appears in one scene

• not required to swear or show romantic love

Her voice should be soft but stern; quite regal in tone; both English and American accents acceptable. Feel free to add lines from the game appearance. You don't have to add random noises as there are none to add in the first place.

Charold is the ferryman of the Underwhere, an old spirit whose job it is to row newly deceased souls across the River Twygz. He does not display much personality and has never been known to say anything other than his business dialogue. He is an obvious parody of Charon, the ferryman of the River Styx from Greek mythology.

Charold is:

• a miniscule role (he only ever says the three lines listed); if you're cast, you won't have to do anything more except maybe re-record the lines

He should sound raspy and whispy, hissing like a snake; accent may be English or European of some kind. There really isn't anything other than the listed lines to include.

Rosabella is the princess of the unnamed kingdom ruled by King Lucius. She was best friends with Dimentio since they were both little. She is generally nice, but flawed as humans come. She lets her emotions get the better of her and says things she doesn't actually mean, but she truly is a kind soul deep down.

Rosabella is:

• a relatively small role

• not required to swear

• definitely required to show romantic love

Her voice should sound posh to a certain extent, but definitely not overdone; should have an English accent; she can have a lot of attitude at times, especially when she gets annoyed. The song follows the same melody as included in her younger counterpart's role; feel free to include the full song. Feel free also to include lines from the original fics. Don't forget to add sounds like gasps, sighs, choking and dying a slow, painful death (morbid, I know, but it's what she does).

Ganter was King Lucius' royal magician until he was caught betraying him and sentenced to life prison. He was always horrible and mean towards his family, but when Dimentio succumbed to the darkness, he freed Ganter and made him the host for the Dark Prognosticus' power. Ganter then changed his name to Esteban and fathered Blumiere, continuing in his abusive tendencies even then until Blumiere did him in for seemingly killing Timpani. Ganter is arrogant, greedy and a large part of what eventually drove Dimentio insane.

Ganter is:

His voice should be somewhat gruff and deep; should have a posh and even pretentious English accent. Feel free to add something from the fic he originates from. Don't forget to add miscellaneous sounds like grunts, yelps and dying to death.

This is Dimentio from when he was somewhere between ten and twelve years old. He is the third son of King Lucius' royal magician, a very acclaimed person in the kingdom. He is not yet insane and very much a good-hearted kid. He is somewhat shy and very humble. Due to his family's constant picking on him, he is quite insecure and feels rather inadequate for his age and blood.

Young Dimentio is:

• not technically required to show romantic love

His voice should sound young and innocent, preferably with an English accent; should be somewhat quiet to reflect his humble and shy personality. Feel free to include lines as they are in the fic. There aren't really any random noises you might need to add except maybe for a light gasp or something.

Damien is the first son of King Lucius' royal magician. As such, he thinks pretty highly of himself. While smarter and more mature than Drake, Damien still gets enjoyment out of endlessly tormenting his youngest brother, Dimentio, for being so much worse than him in the magical arts.

Damien is:

• a very small role

• not required to show romantic love

His voice should sound medium-deep in pitch with an English accent; definitely quite a spoiled brat who thinks he's way cooler than he is. Feel free to include lines from his appearance in the fic. He doesn't really make random noises except maybe for a worried gasp, so you can include one of those if you like.

Drake is the middle child in King Lucius' royal magician's family. He isn't quite as smart or aware of things as his older brother, Damien, and can certainly be dim-witted at times. He loves to play along when Damien picks on Dimentio and even take it a step further. If Damien is the suave villain, Drake is definitely the goofy sidekick, though far less exaggerated than that. Drake isn't so bad of a person on the inside, but is highly influenced by Damien and their father and enjoys going along with the flow, no matter what that entails.

Drake is:

His voice should be higher than Damien's but lower than the young Dimentio's; his accent should still be English but perhaps a little more middle-class than his father and brothers. Both broken and unbroken voices are welcome. Feel free to include any lines you can find. You can include "ah!" as a random noise if you wish.

This is the young version of Rosabella, somewhere between the ages of nine and thirteen. She is a very innocent, good-hearted kid who is also quite spoiled but doesn't have any friends and so sings to herself and plays in the woods alone to pass the time.

Young Rosabella is:

Her voice should sound refined but childish, if possible; should have an English accent; the rest is open to interpretation. For the singing segment, check out this video. She should have a rather choir boy-like quality to her voice if possible. Feel free to include anything you can find. She won't really have to make any miscellaneous noises.

Lucius is the ruler of the nameless kingdom from Dimentio's past and the father of Princess Rosabella. He is a kind-hearted but stern ruler and father who wants only the best for everyone.

Lucius is:

• really quite a minor role

• not required to swear

• not required to show romantic love

His voice should be strong but not loud, posh but not pretentious (preferably with an English accent, as with most of the citizens of his kingdom) and generally quite nice, though not too soft, and just very genuine. Feel free to include any lines you might find in the fic. He doesn't really make any sounds, so there isn't much else to include.

Allen is King Benz's youngest son, a handsome, well-mannered, sheltered young man. He falls in love with Rosabella and tries to court her, which doesn't end well for him. He is generally kind-hearted with a strong sense of everything he was brought up to believe.

Allen is:

• a rather smallish role

• not required to swear, I'm fairly certain

• required to show romantic love

His voice should sound youthful, pleasant and somewhat posh; not pompous; make sure you can sound fittingly angry and grieved. Feel free to add any lines he might have elsewhere. Don't forget to add miscellaneous sounds such as kissing Rosabella's hand, breathing shakily, growling, gagging and coughing up blood, then choking on it (lovely stuff).

Benz is the ruler of the neighbouring country to King Lucius' who is a little less genuine, but still a good person at heart. He thinks mostly of his people and sons and what would benefit them most without caring too much for the well-being of foreigners.

Benz is:

• a relatively small role

His voice should be deeper and a little more smooth than Lucius', a hint of cunning in his voice beneath his pleasantries, maybe even a little Scar-like (Lion King) in nature; he will have to scream himself crazy when he is driven over the line with grief. Feel free to include lines as they are in the fic. Don't forget to include random sounds like bawling his eyes out and choking to death.

Annabelle is a maid in King Lucius' castle, the personal servant assigned to Dimentio while he lives there. She isn't afraid to give Dimentio attitude since he is younger than her and isn't much more than a servant himself.

Annabelle is:

• a miniscule role appearing in only two scenes with hardly any lines

• not required to swear

• not required to show romantic love

Her voice should be fairly healthy-sounding and young; lower-middle class with a Northern English accent if possibile. Feel free to include anything else you might find. There are no noteworthy noises you may need to add.

This is Annabelle when she is in her late seventies or something, but she hasn't changed much apart from that. She is a little more mature, but for the most part, her personality is the same as her younger counterpart.

Old Annabelle is:

• a miniature role with hardly any lines

• not required to swear, I'm fairly sure

• not required to show romantic love

Her voice should just sound like an elderly version of her younger self. Feel free to include anything you can find. Don't forget to add some noises like a growl or a gasp or an "oof!" or something.

The librarian is just that: a mere librarian, without much else going for them. Barely a character at all. Oh, poor librarian, how did it come to this? You aren't even a true walk-on since you never even walk. They can be played by a male or a female and I will animate them accordingly. It's very open-ended; they're just a measly librarian. No offence to any real librarians out there, though real librarians at least have personalities...

The librarian is:

• barely even a role at all, though still larger than Charold (by about one line)

• clearly not required to swear or nearly important enough to love

• not going to be as needlessly bashed as in this description

Their voice should sound quiet (they're in a library, after all) and an English accent would be prefered (as with everyone in King Lucius' kingdom); they should sound old enough, but not elderly. There really isn't anything else you could include, save a "shh" or something.

A righteous knight of the deceased King Lucius' kingdom now under the rule of King Benz. There isn't much else to his character.

This knight is:

• a miniature role, though still larger than the librarian

• not required to swear, I don't think

• not required to show romantic love

His voice should sound bold and brave and maybe a little pretentious; just like a stereotypical knight. Feel free to include lines any old knight might say. Don't forget to add noises such as grunts and groans and yelps and cries.

Various extras for the film. If you're cast in any role whatsoever, chances are, you'll also be playing an extra at some point. Even if you weren't cast but still auditioned for a role, there's a high likelyhood you'll be invited to play an extra. However, I do need some extras who do not sound like any of the other roles.

Extras will include:

• Goombas, small, stumpy mushroom creatures, some of which have chipmunked voices

• Koopas (like Parrakarry), the yellow turtle species of the Mushroom Planet; generally very similar to humans in all aspects but appearance, although their voices may be more "bubbly" if possible

• Yoshis, multicoloured dinosaurs that live all throughout the Mushroom Planet; extremely friendly with high-pitched voices that sound like this and this (in speech, a little like Elmo from Sesame Street)

• humans of both genders such as the knights and mages of King Lucius' castle

• others

Apart from Parakarry the post-Koopa's line, I'd like the auditions to be ad-libbed generic conversations and random grunts and screams and such (or really anything else you care to add).

The Chaos Heart is a mystical artefact born of an event of notable chaos. This role is the disembodied voice that comes from it, accompanying the Dark Prognosticus. It is chaotic evil incarnate and it will destroy the world.

The Chaos Heart is:

• the smallest role with only two short lines

• not required to swear or show romantic love

• possibly a role for multiple people

Its voice should sound dark, deep, mysterious, devilish and preferably rather feminine. It is very possible that I will have multiple people's voices layered over each other voice these lines. Feel free to include whatever you want. Don't forget to add the odd noise, such as a hiss or a strong, creepy breath or something.
