Happy New Year everyone! We are happy to announce that auditions are now open for "Betty", one of Desolation's main characters. More details available under the role.
This is a lead role for a main character in Desolation, named Betty. Betty is a human engineer working for Aperture in the 1980s; or she was, until she uploaded her mind into a robot, becoming the first ever personality core. She designed the prototype herself, and chose herself to be the first to undergo the neural upload procedure.
Clever, compassionate, and fiercely loyal to Aperture Laboratories, Betty accompanies player character Diana Mendez on her perilous journey through the facility, frequently chiming in with enthusiastic quips and sympathetic reassurances... at least to begin with. As the story progresses, Betty turns increasingly sombre as she begins to resent Aperture’s immoral experiments and regret her role in creating personality cores.
Betty is a multilayered character, but the part should be performed as outlined above. Feel free to put your own stamp on the delivery, but please avoid improvisation or deviation from the script. The first excerpt is near the start of the game - Betty meets player-character Diana after saving her life and introduces herself. The second excerpt is taken from the middle of the story, where Betty begins to regret her past work. The third excerpt is near the end of the game - Betty and Diana discover an abandoned military wing, where test elements and subjects are fashioned into terrifying weapons.
Looks like your surgery was a complete success! That doesn’t happen often; must be your lucky day. Not so lucky for me though, because now… I have to file an Unusual Incident Report. Thrilling, I know. Pick me up off this rail, and let’s get going! My name’s Betty, by the way. And you are…? You are… you are not responding. Don’t worry, take your time. I’m here to look after you, whatever happens.
I thought I was creating something good. I really believed that. I was so sure I was right that I couldn’t stop working on it, testing and refining and improving it until one day, it was done. I looked at what I’d made for what felt like the first time. And then, there was this… doubt. This little voice in my head saying: "what if this is wrong?" I didn’t listen, but I wish I had. That nagging sense of dread that I brushed off… it was the truth.
Maybe this is what every applied science company does in the end: sells their innovations to the highest bidder. Aperture technology fashioned into weapons, gleaming white so you know exactly what company just killed you. War as a brand. We’ve always dealt in death, but not like this, not on purpose. We wanted to make things better. To make humanity better. We all did… didn’t we?
This role is for a supporting character in Desolation called the Advertisement Assistant. Their function in the story is to introduce the player to the BRACE Cybernetic System, a previously unseen Aperture invention from the 1980s which is a vital part of the main character and the wider narrative. The BRACE is a technology which augments and upgrades the human body with cybernetic parts, including a metal skeleton and artificial organs.
The Advertisement Assistant demonstrates the BRACE first via a narrated commercial, and then through lines of explanatory dialogue presented to the player in-game. In-universe, Aperture authored these lines to win over investors and persuade potential customers: it’s classic advertising spiel, full of exaggerations and sinister undertones.
The part can be played however you like. The ideal performer will speak with clarity and confidence, and excel at delivering both serious and comedic lines. Feel free to put your own stamp on the delivery, but please avoid improvisation or deviation from the script. It is up to you whether to portray them as a traditional human salesperson, or as something more robotic/artificial.
Introducing BRACE: our brand new all-in-one Biological Restoration and Automated Corporal Extension. Winner of the 1981 Consumer Technology Innovation Awards, proudly sponsored by Aperture Laboratories. With this adaptable integrated cybernetic system, you’ll be a better human both at work and at home.
Ever find yourself injured, old, or with too many internal organs? The BRACE will fix you up good as new! You’re the problem, we’re the solution. No more broken bones! No more ailing muscles! No more fragile spinal column! With the BRACE, pain is a thing of the past.
You will now use your BRACE Cybernetic System to solve a series of Aperture-brand test chambers. Your primary module is the Antebrachial Relativity Manipulator, or ARM for short. And it really is for short: we had to surgically remove your forearm to attach it! With the ARM, all the functionalities of the Handheld Portal Device are now a part of your body, interfacing directly with the BRACE to provide superlative control and utility. If you thought your hand was handy, think again!
