Pac-Store - English Fan Dub

Project Overview

Hi, everyone! My name is Ryan Silberman.

Among other things, I am a huge Pac-Man nerd; I ran No Context Pac-Man on Twitter from 2019 to 2024, and I continue to run its sister profile Daily Pac-Man since 2020 on Twitter and BlueSky. I've also contributed to many Pac-Man archivals, as well as writing and consultance for the official Pac-Man art and history book, Pac-Man: Birth of an Icon.

The yella fella's 45th anniversary is drawing near, and I wanted to do something to commemorate the occasion.

Pac-Store was a pop-up shop Bandai Namco operated from 2017-2019, notable for its branding which had unique Pac-Man characters and a distinct style. As part of promoting the store, six small animated shorts were released online; they also played on monitors within the actual shop. However, all of this was pretty much exclusive to Japanese audiences. There is no English dub of the shorts, so I want to see if I can take a crack at making one.

This is a small free passion project with a handful of lines to go around, so there won't be a whole lot in the budget for it. But I think this will be fun for everyone involved to participate in, and I'd love to see what English-speaking voices can be lent to these characters.

That said, I do have a few requirements:
>Have a solid-quality mic

>Since this is a dub, it is important to match the words with the charcters' lips. Along with doing the line, try your best to time it as well. For your convenience, each character listing has a short video featuring instrumental-only clips of the lines you would perform.

>Payment will be done through PayPal, so have a PayPal ready!

Anything else you decide to contribute here is fair game! I'm not a stickler, and there are probably approaches you may do that I haven't thought about. I am also still working on writing the English-ified script, so things might not even necessarily be final there. You can also feel free to alter the wording in your audition to better match the lip flap if you think it would work better for your that way.

  • All character voices have been fulfilled!

    Hi everyone!

    We are down to the final stage of the fandub - everyone that's voice-acted as one of the six characters in the shorts has submitted all the voice work they needed for me to incorporate! Now, it's down to the video editing and making sure the sound is balanced finely enough the whole way through.

    It's only a matter of time before I will be able to share the video link with you all! In the meantime, I can always use more people chanting "PAC-STORE!" in place of the Japanese equivalent for when the logo appears before every short.

  • The deadline has passed!

    Helo hello!

    Just a quick little update for you all. As of now, everyone's had their chance to submit auditions for the fandub, and I will not be accepting any new entries until further notice.

    There's been a lot going on outside this project, so it might take a little while for me to process all of these auditions and actually get the scripts ready for when I'm ready to cast anyone. Nevertheless, i thank you all SO very much for the time and effort put into your submissions.

    You're all super talented, and narrowing it down to just a handful of individuals is going to be very tough for me. Whatever the case, I hope to keep you guys in mind should I start seeking talent for original projects that will pay more than just the $2-5 I'm offering here. In the meantime, you will know if you are picked for a role here!

  • Age requirement, payment substitute, etc?

    Hi again, all!
    Currently we are sitting pretty at 44 auditions for me to look over, and that is awesome. So much talent is on display, and it's going to be super hard for me to narrow it down to just a handful of voices. I cannot be more grateful for those who have generously provided a sample.

    Having said that, I've gotten a couple questions that I realize I have not given a whole lot of thought about, so I will use this time to provide an answer.

    Since this is a fun little fan project, people of all ages are welcome to audition, minors included. However, minors will not be receiving a $2-5 payment through PayPal. They will instead receive a download key for one of my paid games - if they do not have a Steam account, they will instead receive it as a key for Itch . io.

    I can also offer this as a substitute for the payment if you do not have or do not wish to use PayPal to receive money.

    Finally, you do not necessarily need an account here on CCC to audition, as you can DM me through Discord, Twitter, or BlueSky to provide me your sample. It's just easier for me to sift through the auditions when they're gathered all in one place. But I will not ignore anything that's sent outside it.

    I am no stickler for formats since I imagine I can just convert any of them to the file type of my choosing anyway, but it helps for the audio to be either mp3, wav, or mp4 by default.

  • Lip flap visual aids!

    Hey all, and thanks very much to those who submitted so far!

    I've beefed up the page a bit to provide some extra aid giving you an idea on how the lines sampled are intended to be spoken in action. Each character profile now has a YouTube link leading to a short video consisting of instrumental-only versions of the clips the lines would be used in. This way, you don't have to meticulously search for the lines you're doing in the full video compilation of all the shorts.

    Of course, my goal is to figure out the right voices. If you already submitted and are confident in your voice for the character, you don't necessarily need to submit a new take as long as you acknowledge the pace and tone may be different than what you may have expected beforehand.

    But it certainly helps both of us to find the right angle to approach the character's lines by narrowing down how they will be used. For my part, I'm hoping future auditionees take note of the visual aids and use them for their benefit.
