Casting Call for Otto & Bradley in Something Fishy: An Animated Short from Third Year Sheridan Students

Casting Call for Otto & Bradley in Something Fishy: An Animated Short from Third Year Sheridan Students

Project Overview

This project is for a student-animated short film from Sheridan College. (And as such, we would prefer voice talent that is able to come to the campus, especially for our main cast. If you are unable to travel to the campus, feel free to audition, so long as your microphone is clear/ of good quality).

The story is about Otto the cat and Bradley the dog trying to find the culprit of who robbed the local aquarium of their saltwater fish. We want this short to feel like a pilot for a television series, as we are a comedy as well. Please view our profile for a more detailed synopsis of the film.

The film will be 5(ish) minutes in length. It is going to be made with 2D (hand-drawn) animation. We need actors ASAP, as we plan to start production this January. Dialogue may change as the film develops, but we hope to complete the film by April 2019.

Our character Otto the cat is our main role and requires someone that sounds anxious, and kinda scratchy. He gets interrogated by Richard the Police Dog in the first act of the film, so we need to make sure that we can sympathize with our barista cat. In Act two, our characters have a chase scene as they follow behind a food truck while on a skateboard, and skateboarding is the one thing Otto is good at, so while in the chase sequence, he should still sound his character, just much more confident than he previously was. We want our film to feel like a cartoon pilot, so any sort of pitch of voice is accepted - Our references for the look of the film are Wonder over Yonder, Powerpuff Girls, Amazing World of Gumball, Star Vs. The Forces of Evil, etc. and they can also be references for how we expect the energy for voice acting.

  • "I - I think you have the wrong-" Otto anxiously trying to defend himself while getting interrogated

  • "Oh gosh, I'm done for! They think it was me... I'm going to jail... what will my mom think?" Very anxious, talking to himself, very exasperated

  • "They're not getting away!" - Otto is on the skateboard chasing the food truck, skateboarding is the one thing he is good at, so he should feel more confident.

Our character Bradley the dog is our Supporting Lead role and requires someone that sounds calm, collected, and kind of bored. He is the one that pieces together the clues and figures out that the vegan protesters must be behind the crime, and he does genuinely care about Otto, even if he doesn't always show it. He goes through an opposite arc to Otto, starting off confident and collected, and over the course of the film getting more and more excited.

  • "I don't get paid enough for this." Bradley bored, uninterested, acting as comedic relief to Otto getting interrogated by Police

  • "Kale? Who in the world eats kale.... THE VEGANS!" Bradley realizes with a start who is actually responsible for the robbery. He starts off still bored, but THE VEGANS should be emphasized. Almost as a 'AHA' moment.

  • "AHH! THEY'RE GETTING AWAY!" Scared, worried. Bradley does not like skateboarding. He is terrified in this moment, and goes through an opposite arc that Otto goes through.

Our character Dolly the dog is our Supporting Lead role and requires someone that sounds valley, preppy and eventually - kind of crazy. She is the main antagonist to the film, but is not revealed to be the antagonist until the third act. We want her to be kind of annoying at the beginning, but to also feel like an extra. In the third act of the film she thinks she has won, and maniacally monologues.

  • "Oh man, those protesters outside are SO brave..." in awe, kind of valley girl. She is one of the protesters outside, and is annoying Bradley as she orders her drink.

  • "Well well boys... Took you long enough." At the climax of the film, it is revealed that the person who stole the fish was Dolly. She emerges from the food truck, very confidently, and says this line almost sultry.

  • "...but NONE of them could accomplish WHAT I HAVE!!" the big reveal. Dolly's monologue. Her voice should be raised, and she should be getting more and more crazy. This line should feel frantic, and over confident.

Our character Richard the dog is a minor role and requires someone that sounds deep voiced, kinda dumb, AND kinda lovable. Richard acts as the inciting incident to the film when he accuses Otto of stealing the fish. Richard loves tennis balls. He is good at his job, and should not feel like an antagonist, just a character that moves the plot along. He is a good guy, and should be liked by the audience. Reference Kronk type voices as inspiration.

  • "There has been a robbery, and we are taking you in for questioning." Richard the police dog has arrived, and is accusing Otto of stealing the fish (he is a cat after all) Can feel more calm, or can feel more angry/ accusatory

  • "What did you do with the fish? Put em in coffee? You know they can't live in coffee! They're saltwater fish." -Richard is accusing Otto with rapid fire questions, moving closer and closer with each sentence. Richard is a bit dumb though, gets off track sometimes. 'they're saltwater fish' line should be whispered.

  • "BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!" Should last for 3-5 seconds. This is in the third act of the film, and acts as comedic relief as Richard comes charging through as he gets distracted by a tennis ball that was thrown. It should act as a yell/ scream while saying the one word.

  • This will be background noise for the film whenever we are set in front of the aquarium where the protesters are. Feel free to submit as few or as many lines as you wish! Lines should reference 'free the fish' or 'animal rights' , etc. The protesters are hippie vegan animal rights activists and are made up of both cats and dogs.
