Nightcall Radio: A One-Shot Audio Drama

Nightcall Radio: A One-Shot Audio Drama

Project Overview

Frank Aspen is the personality behind the "Nightcall Radio Graveyard Show", a radio show where he spends all night talking about anything that he feels worth talking about. He also takes calls from listeners, and most of these calls are from drunks or women who've been cheated on and just want someone to talk to. Frank has heard pretty much everything in the five years he's had his show, but when a man calls claiming to have a woman held captive, Frank's normally routine night gets a side of flair he certainly didn't ask for.

To audition for this project, you need:

  • A  good quality microphone and recording space. Note that I'm not looking for perfect, professional quality (I understand that not everyone has access to that equipment, and it would be unfair to ask for high-grade equipment for an unpaid project), but it also shouldn't sound horrendous. In addition, do not do any editing to your audition yourself (noise reduction is fine). Record it as dry (without effects) as possible.
  • A Discord account, or be able to make one if you are cast. Discord will be our main form of communication throughout the project's phases. Note that you don't need to be active in the discord; I only ask that you check it every so often for any updates or critique.
  • The ability to record into and send WAV files. MP3 is fine for the audition, but if cast, you need to be able to record and send WAV. If you need assistance with this and you are cast, I will gladly help you!

If you are cast for this project, you will be given a copy of the script and be given two weeks from the time casting is complete and the project officially begins to record all necessary lines and submit them. If you can get it done faster, that is not only encouraged, but greatly appreciated. However, do not rush! Take your time and do things right to minimize redos. You are also encouraged to ask any and all questions you may have in the discord.

This project is unpaid. If things go well and the project comes out great, you will be among the first considered for when offering paid work becomes a reality for me. I know that my word alone does not mean much, but your efforts and assistance are greatly appreciated both during and after production.

If you wish to see some of my previous work, check the links below!

  • Game of Hearts is a one-shot about two friends, Sabrina Larson and Vivienne Shields, who meet up three years after graduating college to catch up over a card game titled "Game of Hearts".
  •  Interrogations is a teaser for an upcoming project about the death of Scott Williams, a star college football player, that is invested by Blake Bauer, in a bizarre case where all four suspects are women.
  • The Interview is a one-shot about a man, James Lombardi, who goes to a job interview for a job he found online. He knows little about this job other than where the interview is being held. His interviewer, a woman who refers to herself as "Applegate", seems normal... or is she?
  • TimeScape Training Tape is a one-shot, semi-immersive experience in which you, the listener, are a new potential recruit for TimeScape, a company that has learned how to record, distribute, and market the memories of people.
  • Cold Sauce is a one-shot about a businesswoman, Janice Lowe, who is a frequent user of Cold Sauce, a drug popular in the Rockford district of Serenade City. Janice meets with her dealer, Cypher, and learns that he's raised the price of his product.

This project will be distributed through Anchor, which will further distribute it to a number of services such as Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, PocketCast, Breaker, and many more!

Frank Aspen is the protagonist of "Nightcall Radio". The host of a radio show of the same name, Frank is a mild-mannered individual who has grown to be indifferent about pretty much everything due to his show. Frank doesn't believe much of what he hears from his callers, which leads to him joking about pretty much everything they say to him, which has built his reputation as both a relatable figure and an ass to most of those who listen to him.

Some details about Frank:

- He is intended to be in his late 20's/early 30's

- He has a "radio voice"; his voice is very calm and easy to listen to.

- Due to his long time running his show, he's mostly unfazed and uninterested in the calls he receives. However, he should address his listeners with more interest and depth.

  • Hello, listeners. You're listening to Nightcall Radio, the best show on the air for people who are still up at this hour instead of getting their beauty rest. I'm your host, Frank Aspen, and quite frankly, I can't wait for your calls to start coming in.

  • Most of the calls I get are people who are drunk, just got cheated on, or both. Quite honestly, I don't get why you all call me. You should be calling your therapist (chuckles) I'm kidding, I'm kidding. But seriously, keep the calls coming in. I've got a feeling the next one'll be a good one.

  • Look, buddy, the prank was funny at first... well, no, it really wasn't. So tell your girlfriend she can take out the ball gag, or the sock, or whatever she's gagging on because I'm not buying your story.

Role assigned to: BraeLightning

The Captor is an unnamed character who calls into Frank's radio show claiming to have a woman held captive. He promises the woman will live, but only if Frank meets him at the location he specifies. The Captor seems to have history or a connection to Frank... but what could it be?

Some notes about The Captor:

- Intended to be in his late 20's/early 30's, same as Frank.

- He is very nervous.

- He is NOT supposed to sound "evil". Rather, he should sound "normal", but with a hint of instability about him.

  • Hey, Frank. I hope you got a good listen at the woman whimpering. Before you ask, yes, I kidnapped her, and yes, I'm going to kill her; that is, of course, unless you bring your ass down to the address I'm about to give you. You got that? You meet me, and she lives, but you don't, and she dies.

  • Look, you don't have to believe me. Honestly, it's no skin off my back if the bitch dies or not. But I thought you were a respectable guy, Frank? Aren't you some kind of, you know, positive figure or something? I figured you'd want to save a damsel in distress.

  • Meet me at Mansfred Street, the place by the old abandoned warehouse. You come alone, or I kill her. I see someone who isn't you, I kill her. And if you bring any police with you, or if I even think you might have brought police with you or that one of your *listeners* called the cops, you can probably guess what I'll do. So please, cooperate and everyone walks out alive. I think that's a good deal, right? See you there.

Role assigned to: Makenzie Mazing

The first caller who calls into Frank's show during the events of the story, Cecile is a young woman who believes her boyfriend is cheating on her. At the time that she calls, she is on her way to his house to prove her claims, and calls Frank in the hopes that he will encourage her on her mission.

Cecile should sound frantic and young, about 19-21 years of age. Her accent doesn't matter, but there is no "Any" option, so have fun with it!

  • (Crying) Hi Frank, I'm on my way to my boyfriend's house right now. I know it sounds crazy, but I'm one hundred percent sure he's cheating on me, and I don't know, I-I really wanted to talk to someone while I drive to his house to confront him, and I didn't know who else to call, and your show was on, and I just, I don't know, I called you!

  • *Frank will respond asking how Cecile knows her boyfriend is cheating on her. Come up with an out-of-the-box but still somewhat realistic response. If you are selected for this role, your response will be used in the final script!*

cast offsite

Chad and Chase are a drunk couple who are the second callers of the night for Frank. Chad mentions that Chase is fascinated with Frank's voice, and asks if Frank will narrate their sex tape.

Chad is 23, and he should sound very, very drunk.

  • Dude, my girl is totally into your voice, like, way more than a person probably should be into a voice, and she really, really wants you to like, narrate our next sex tape. Sounds cool, right?

Chad and Chase are a drunk couple who are the second callers of the night for Frank. Chase is fascinated by Frank's voice, and wishes for him to narrate her and Chad's next sex tape.

Chase is 17, a rich kid, and should sound very, very drunk.

  • I'm totally in love with your voice! I remember one time, I turned on your show, completely by accident, and I was like... woah, this guy's voice is so cool. So I was just wondering, you know, and I'll pay you, of course. Like, I don't know, three hundred bucks or something, if that's enough?

Leslie

Role assigned to: celestielle

Leslie is Frank's wife, and the woman who was taken captive by The Captor. Frank's wife of nearly ten years, Leslie has been there for him for almost half of his life, and he loves her more than anyone else. Unfortunately, Leslie's love for Frank has died off in recent years due to his (unintentional) prioritization of his job over her. Frank is unaware that Leslie is the woman The Captor is holding, and is unaware of the reason why The Captor has kidnapped her in the first place.

Some details about Leslie:

- She is in her late 20's/early 30's

- She is intended (though not required) to have an English accent.

- She does not know why she was kidnapped until The Captor reveals the reason to Frank.

  • Frank, I'm so sorry, I... I should never have hurt you like this. It's just... ever since you got your job, you've practically ignored me. You started putting your job first. I just... I don't know. I'm sorry.

Role assigned to: holographicVA

The SCPD Officer is one of the officers sent by the Serenade City Police Department after one of Frank's listeners lets them know that he used his secret code, "there's no need to wake up the nightsticks" on the air. The officer can be male or female and virtually any age older than Teen, with any accent. This is a very open role, so have fun with it!

  • You know, the hidden code of yours that you gave us finally came in handy. Thanks to you, we were able to stop a potential murder and catch a kidnapper. Nice job, Frank. We'll make sure he gets put away and isn't a threat to you or anyone else.

  • (After Frank mentions his paranoia came in handy) Yeah, I'll be honest, I thought it was a prank when one of your listeners called in and said you'd used the code. But I guess it actually came in handy. So thanks for being paranoid. You saved a life.
