Monocyte audio drama

Project Overview

Eclectic Full Contact Theatre is accepting submissions for their upcoming serialized Audio Drama podcast—Monocyte.

MONOCYTE--Both a parody of, and homage to, classic series such as Star Trek, Buck Rogers, and Space:1999, Monocyte tells the stories of the intrepid crew of the GMC (Galactic Medical Cruiser) Monocyte as they travel the universe, doing good and aiding the needy. Except their Captain is narcissistic, ignorant, overly-confident, and just possibly clinically depressed. Touching on topics such as toxic masculinity, colonization, and mental health, Monocyte will have you laughing even while you think. (Comedy)

Please choose which characters you would like to audition for and record the sides—one take per character (you can do multiple characters for the same series on the same track, but still only one take per character) one track per series. Please label the mp3 file TITLE OF SERIES_CHARACTER NAME_YOUR NAME and send mp3, a headshot/resumé and any demo track you may wish, to Efctaudio @ gmail.com

Audition submissions are due November 30th. Rehearsals will be online January 12th, 23rd, 24th, 27th, and February 4th. with recording being done remotely February 6th, 7th, and 13th. Pay is $150.

Please read the character breakdowns carefully. EFCT is committed to casting a diverse group of artists and will be adhering to the descriptions below. Some roles may be doubled.

Commander Peter Allen Chalke

Paid: Flat Rate 150 USD
cast offsite

Male, Caucasian, 30’s.

Square jawed, self-assured commander of the Monocyte. More brawn than brain but with a lot of heart. Plagued by ongoing nightmares which feature in most episodes. Unknowingly from Earth’s distant past, unknowingly clinically depressed. Very Phil Hartman as Troy McClure.

  • CHALKE: Ahh, debriefings: Boring... I was there, I know what happened. We know what happened. Mister Murtaugh, you know what happened? Monocyte, do you know what happened? You see, Emissary Fralgon? Even the ship knows. The point is, Emissary Fralgon, we all know what happened. And it’s why I, as the custodian and full-time Papa Bear of this ship, have ordered a full weapon restock. And so, I don’t need further briefing and we can all just move on with the weapon restock and whatever little errand Trixie has us chasing

Non-binary/trans Late 20’s/early 30’s

Alien emissary assigned to the Monocyte as a liaison for their (our) people. (Who all happen to be the same or no or any gender, as suits needs/feelings/wants.) Possessed of mental and physical gifts far beyond those of humans. Highly trained in their (our) species’ form of hand to hand combat. They (our) record most of the log of events as Chalke cannot be bothered. Pronouns – We/Our/Ours

  • Emissary Fralgon’s log, Earth date January 23, 2097. We continue to maintain log entries as our commander, Peter Arthur Chalke, sees no interest in documenting our exploration. Stationed aboard a Galactic Medical Cruiser, Monocyte, representing the United Space Associated Federated Galactic Alliance of Friendly Species on a mission of exploration, relief, and aid, we have been tasked with maintaining relations between the people of Earth and ours. How Commander Chalke intends to deal with the paperwork after the mission eludes me, but it is our hope that our log will continue to document and perhaps explain our strange adventures. And, perhaps, we will let Chalke copy our homework.

Following the “Sagittarian Affair,” detailed in our previous log entry, the United Space Associated Federated Galactic Alliance of Friendly Species have directed that Monocyte crew resources be diverted to assisting second-in- command, Dr. Evelyn “Montana” Trixie, gather neo- organic materials in order to further her research for a universal cure for all disease. Following Sagittarius, Commander Chalke ordered a full re-stock of the ship’s weaponry, which has caused no slight bit of friction between himself and the Doctor. We are now on our way to the bridge to brief Commander Chalke of our analysis of the incident. We can only hope that his mood has improved after clashing with the Doctor

Male, Caucasian, LGBTQ+ 40’s.

No-nonsense, though xenophobic and hetero-centric, head of security. Devoted to the United Space Associated Federated Galactic Alliance of Friendly Species, but extremely proud of his Earth nationality (think Scotty or Chekov from Star Trek: TOS). A by-the-book type, of course, and should be a counter to Fralgon in almost every way. Hero-worships Chalke and is probably, unknown to himself, in love with the Commander. Way, way in the closet. Irish/English/Scottish accent (in that order of preference)

  • MURTAUGH: They keep their men hidden?. I think I really would be happier in a combat unit. It’s so much easier blowing up other cultures than understanding them.

But I’m not sure I’d be happier working under another commander. I just don’t think another commander would be as commanding. I couldn’t put myself out like that

Crewman #7/Monocyte

Paid: Flat Rate 150 USD
cast offsite

Male, Caucasian, 20’s/30’s

--- “Crewman” – Every bad luck, “red shirt” crewman who ever existed, however, blessed with    boundless optimism and an ability to escape “in the nick of time.” Their catchphrase? “How do         we get out of this?”

--- “The Monocyte” – Initially, the ship’s computer. Later revealed to sentient. Casting notes: White male. As “Crewman,” earnest, naïve, full of wonder. As “The Monocyte,” cool, monotone, matter of fact; very HAL from 2001

  • THE MONOCYTE: Working as I can, Commander. Diverting power is, regrettably, not possible.

    12. CREWMAN #7: (CAUTIOUSLY) The Monocyte diverted power from lower deck sub-systems to speed the process, sir.

    14. THE MONOCYTE:Commander, the crew member misquoted me. Once again, diverting power is not possible

    15. CREWMAN #7: (CONFIDENTLY) The Monocyte confirms, sir.

    16. THE MONOCYTE: The Monocyte does not.

    1. CREWMAN#7:Allsystemsonlineandworking,sir. 2. 2.THEMONOCYTE:That’snotwhatIsaid

Ambassador Shala

cast offsite

Female, Actor of Color, 30’s/40’s

Grangian Ambassador Stationed on the Monocyte during their first (episodic) adventure and stays on board for the remainder of  Around other Grangians, stiffly formal, as her station requires. Around members of the Monocyte crew, highly inquisitive and friendly. Will also play all other Grangians

  • SHALA: It is unfortunate, but on Grange we believe that her spirit will be reborn to a much happier life. Every Grangian is new life in contrast with death. The more horrible the death, the better the rebirth. Lucky for her, Kamala died horribly. I hope when my death comes, it is as spectacularly painful and disgusting as Kamala’s. No, Doctor, the ones we really mourn are the ones who die in their sleep. It is most unlucky.
