Monna Chroma: The Ticking of the Tower (An Animated Pilot)

Project Overview

The only thing Monna wants to do is find her father.

Nearly alone in the whole of Altária—a magical world full of bellowing sky ships, monsters that defy logic, and helpful companions—she must take it upon herself to find him. As a 13-year-old Uvanti with an unspoken connection to the moons and a strange mark on the back of her dominant hand, Monna must adventure across the land - collecting enchanted capelettes and other items to help her combat the threats of an unforgiving world. This is the only way she’ll find out where, how, and why her father disappeared 3 years ago.

Welcome to the world of Monna Chroma! This has been a dream project for me to make since 2014, and I'm finally able to do it. I'm really excited to bring this to life with a small team. Right now myself and the team are hard at work on preproduction for this animated pilot! We've got the final draft of the pilot script complete, a completed storyboard, and now we are working on background art and animation. Currently looking for voice actors and additional animators on the project!

Submission Preferences:

Please submit your audio with minimal to no background noise, and ensure your microphone is clean and clear. Audition submissions preferred in ABCABC, but AABBCC is also acceptable! Perform at least 2 takes per line, maximum 3 takes per line.

About Deferred:
A minimum flat pay of $50-$100 USD (based on role relevance) will be paid per role, with an agreed upon rate based upon project success paid afterwards (generally paid-per line). An NDA will be required, and an AI rider will be provided to sign to protect your voice. Absolutely no AI is permitted in the use of your audition.

  • 9 DAYS REMAINING! AND OTHER INFORMATION (PLEASE READ)

    Buckle up, this is a long one!

    🚨 Just a gentle reminder that there are ONLY 9 days remaining to audition! Auditions will be cut off at 12:30PM on the 28th of February (PST)! If you haven't auditioned yet we highly encourage it!

    🎙️ Across this and our google forms submission page, we've received over 300 submissions! Holy wow! However, we still want more so keep them coming! We strongly encourage more individuals to audition for other roles, too (would appreciate if you guys could show Lockwin some more love)!

    📝 Reminder that just because a "preferred" accent is listed, doesn't mean you shouldn't try something else or use your native accent if you're from another country! From first hand experience, I know that auditioning with something that wasn't asked for can get you the role! Feel free to have fun with it!

    🌐 I love the diversity seen here in the auditions, and it's made me want to hear more! While I listed a U.S. country accent for Beo, for example, I love hearing other accents too like arabica, hispanic, Japanese, etc. You guys have really done some awesome takes and it makes it so hard to pick!

    🔒 When casting calls close, we may spend about a week reviewing submissions, so we appreciate your patience when the casting call closes. In that time, my colleagues and myself will be reviewing each of the submissions and coming to a unanimous agreement. It'll take time, but we hope for a better casting this way.

    ✉️ When casting occurs, we will send a message/email to the individuals who have been selected with our offer for payment and deferred agreement, arranging timeline, etc. If the selected actor is unavailable for any reason, we will move on to our next choice until all slots have been filled. Please know this is such a hard choice for us to make because you guys have been absolutely mind blowing.

    📼 Callbacks may occur post casting call closure! If you are selected for a callback, you'll be given additional lines to read that are from either the current script or a future script. Submission within 48 hours of the callback is required.

(Pronounced MAHNAH) Monna is a child adventurer, not too dissimilar to Finn from adventure time or Link from Legend of Zelda. However, that bears a lot of weight on her being so young. Born not knowing her mother, Monna loves and cherishes the time she spends with her father, as well as her Uncle who swings in from time to time. Monna’s father is her entire universe, and vis versa. Monna, named after the Moon Goddess (the Goddess of Unity), has her entire world turned upside down when her father disappears and doesn't return when he said he would. With her Companion, Larry, Monna sets out to find hints to her father's whereabouts, biting off more than she can chew for a 13 year old along the way. 


Monna is adventurous, curious, and while feisty in combat, is also still a child interested in play and story telling.


VOICE: Young girl. Educated, playful, but can also be serious. I primarily envision her being similar to Connie from Steven Universe in tone and inflection, but the voice is WIDE open to interpretation, and I welcome Nordic voice actors. For example, Monna's Uncle speaks in an almost Nordic accent, though more on the "sailor-y-pirate" side. Monna also is great with flat, deadpan humor, which aims to be a direct foil to Larry's wishes for her safety. 


Inspirations for Monna include Link from Legend of Zelda, Finn from Adventure Time, Steven and Connie from Steven Universe, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, and other adventuring young heroes.

  • (Annoyed) Hey! Your weird robot crab thing took my necklace. Give it back!

  • (Calm/Pondering) Most nights - nights like this - I’ll lay in the grass and look up at the moons. Sometimes we talk, though the conversations are pretty one sided. Other times, I just feel safe. Like they’re watching over me and no words are needed. Do you think Father looks up at the moons when I do, Larry?

Larry is a tree bug. Constructed into existence from the pain and sorrow of Monna, Larry is her companion, tethered by soul as her guardian to keep her safe. Fatherly, Larry takes pride in keeping Monna safe, and finds himself needing to be stern with her more often than not. However she always finds a way to melt his icy heart and sometimes get her way. 


Larry is scrappy, and will gladly get into a fight if it meant protecting Monna, or his own ego. He's protective and fatherly, caring much about Monna as the main adult in her life outside of her Uncle. 


VOICE: Looking for a Scottish or Irish voice print on the low-mid side. Ideally, not and over the top "JSE" style of "top of the mornin to ya laddies" if you intend to do an Irish accent. 


Inspirations for Larry include Jake from Adventure Time, Link's Uncle from that one IGN April Fools Day trailer for Legend of Zelda (link here), 1st and 12th Doctor from Doctor Who, the whole "Dad who would do anything for her daughter" sorta vibe.

Pronounced like the first portion of "Beowulf", Beo is skillful engineer who's left the fleet to live in the woods alone. She's augmented her cabin into a Steampunk paradise, and invents new mechanical creatures constantly. While at first cold to Monna, she can't help but become like a big sister over the young adventurer, even going as far to help her repair her capelets and other tools after an incident. She has the "excuse me, she asked for no pickles" vibe.  


Note: Beo does not appear until episode 2, however as she's a prominent character during that episode, and we are optimistic that we will make it beyond just the pilot, we are looking to cast her with the Pilot characters! 


VOICE: Open to interpretation. A slight southern accent or a slight Hispanic accent are a plus. PoC encouraged to audition! 


INSPIRATION: Ursula from Kiki's delivery service is a huge inspiration to her character. Ragatha from TADC. Applejack from MLP. Primarily looking for big sister who would die for the protagonist energy.

Commander Briggs, though not directly related, is like another uncle to Monna. As the first officer of the A.V. Starchaser, Briggs is highly respected, as well as very militant. That doesn't prevent him from knowing how to talk to children, especially when it comes to Monna. He's an avid fencer, boxer, horseback rider, and all around a solid leader.


VOICE: Any accent is accepted, but British or US East coast English is highly preferred. 


Inspirations include Sir Patrick Stewart as Picard from ST TNG, Robert Picardo as the Doctor from ST: Voyager, Peter Capaldi as the Doctor from Doctor Who.

(Giving a Speech) When I was a boy, there was a seaside cabin my father used to take my brother and I to. One day, while my brother and I went to the beach to play in the water, we hadn't realized how close to high tide it was. The waves enveloped us, the water frigid over our bodies. Tossed about, I was able to stand on my toes in the neck deep water. I called out for my brother, screaming for him to call back, but I heard nothing. I saw nothing. My father came and pulled me out of the water while I dived over and over to try and find him, but it was all too murky. And it was all too late.

Lockwin is the captain of the A.V. Starchaser, taking command after his brother Chroma went missing. Lockwin is the Santa style of uncle, being generally jovial in nature, especially with his niece, Monna, who he visits every two to three weeks. Despite the size of him, Lockwin prefers diplomacy over confrontation, feeling words can save the foul actions of a thousand men.

VOICE: Sailor, not exactly pirate. Very much inspired by the Nordic style of speaking - think Skyrim jarls or guards but with more gruff. Lockwin occasionally slips into his native tongue, occurring more frequently when he's upset, which doesn't normally happen.

Alpha-Zero-Theta is an expansionist terrorist in search of something called the Goddess Key which can access the "land between" where someone important to "AZT" is being held. As a being from D0, AZT doesn't experience time in the same way, and has been waiting a long time to meet Monna, who he believes holds the Goddess Key. He will stop at nothing to get it. He's fast, and movements unrealistic.


This character has a lot of secrets but is fairly direct. 


VOICE: Flat, semi-monotone when hiding emotional responses, but not robotic. Inspiration includes Drednok from Star Trek Prodigy, White diamond from Steven Universe, Prowler from Spiderman Into the Spiderverse, etc. While speaking, if AZT refers to an individual, they will reproduce an uncanny version of that individual's voice.


Looking for a mid to deeper voice, but all voices welcome. AZT does NOT use contractions.

Presently I am the only animator on this project. I'm working full time and am animating between work hours. My goal is to build a team of at least 2-3 animators who are able to help at the same level of availability or better. Payment is deferred and will be based upon project success.
