The Story:
Leftovers at the End of the World is a cosmic horror, slice-of-life audio drama podcast set in the post-apocalyptic, now coastal state of Arizona. The story follows Anak, a Filipino American courier as they go about their everyday life on their houseboat, The Bahay, while occasionally picking up passengers who share their life stories.
*There are mature themes in this podcast (it is still a horror after all).
Audition Requirements & Need to Knows
- This is currently an unpaid project (as funding becomes available all actors/artists will be back paid/compensated)
- You must be at least 18+ to audition
- You do not need any prior voice acting experience (casting choices will not be influenced by experience or lack of)
- All recording will be done remotely, so please have access to a good mic/recording set up
*Leftovers at the End of the World DOES NOT support the use of AI for voice work, music creation, art, etc. and will NOT be used in the creation/production of this podcast series.

I'd like for at least one take to have the script read as-written, but feel free to improvise and lean into the character(s) you're auditioning for.
I don't have specific voice types in mind for any of the characters so if you're concerned about your voice being "too fem" or "too masc", having an accent, etc., don't be! This is a very diverse world and I'd like it to be reflective in the voices being cast. I'm also aiming to uplift BIPOC and other marginalized voices. These VAs will be given priority.
Each character appears in one centric episode (each with a potential to return for more). There is always a dialogue portion with character interactions and a story portion where (as the name implies) the character is telling a story.
The dialogue portion is exactly as the name implies. It's part of the story where the characters are interacting with other characters/ the world around them.
The story portions draw inspirations from podcasts like Old Gods of Appalachia, The Magnus Archives/Protocol, Welcome to Night Vale, etc. However, I'd like to see your own spin on it. This is a world where humanity has very much gone back to it's storytelling roots where the medium of word-of-mouth is the most dominant form of communication.

Mid-20s+, Latino
El Saguaro runs Apocalypse Radio from his home/radio towers up on Camelback Mountain. He gives reports on the general going on in the state. While he’s not the only broadcaster on air, he’s the most popular. Due to his agoraphobia, he rarely ever leaves the station despite saying he’s going to do so. His radio personality is very different from the one she shows his friends and family.
El Saguaro appears in every episode to wrap up the day’s events and signal the oncoming night. He has a good friendship with Anak.
Sweat and rain is not a good mix when you’ve got to make it down about 200-feet. I clung for dear life, prayed to the gods to not let me die and slid my way down. The rain was not helping and I lost my footing once and I swear to you, felt my heart drop straight to my stomach as I basically shot down almost a whole twenty feet before I was able to properly catch myself.
I can see the sun setting so you all know what that means. Stay inside, stay asleep, and stay safe. You’ll hear me again bright and early tomorrow morning. Our last song for the night is “Down Down Jellyfish” by The Monocle Keepers.
Late 20s - Early 30s
Hunter is someone who is both fun and a little flirty despite her occupation and the world she lives in. Her real name is unknown, but she’s a Hunter of the foul creatures that occupy the depths. She trades their parts for materials or eats what’s left. She’s upbeat and cares about random people but also knows the reality that not everyone can be saved. She’s unsettled and disappointed by Anak’s seeming lack of empathy. Despite that it doesn't stop her from having a crush on Anak.
Hunter is a recurring character. (She is a lesbian and it is preferred that the voice actor also shares this similarity.)
As I was saying, I have-had a crush on someone. They were super attractive and our personalities balanced each other out really well. I'm super attractive, super witty, absolutely fabulous as a person. Hey! Don’t you roll your eyes at me!
I wish I could tell you the details of everything that happened but there are only blurs and feelings. Like how when you get really drunk and everything feels pretty floaty. I remember the feel of a knife in my hand and pain… and I let it feed on me.
Fifty years ago, maybe I did. But they believed and who was I to correct them? I was already someone to blame and in a way, I... I am okay with that.
I remember as he walked by me... I could see a trail of slick he was leaving behind with each step. I was so moved that all sense was knocked out of me. Can’t say I’m too proud of what I did next but… I leaned forward and pressed my tongue to the ground where he walked. I could taste the saltiness of the ocean and at the time I acted like I was drinking holy water.
We’ve been exchanging letters every other day since we split so it’s not like her to not send a letter back. She even missed our daily radio check-ins! You know, even though we’re not physically together, our love isn’t any less than any other couple who does spend every day together.
We kept dancing until the waters began to rise around up like a dome of water and light. I tilted my head back as I felt the sprays of cool water sprinkle me with kisses. I heard Ethel giggle like she was drunk and I felt myself laughing with her. And I swear, she and I were glowing.
I don’t know. I’ve never doubted him before. I guess... the week just got to me. Oh, I’m bleeding… I hadn’t noticed. I guess I must’ve been so preoccupied with getting out I didn’t realize I’d hurt myself.
I thought I was being ridiculous for missing the deadbolt but it wasn’t there. There was nothing for me to grab. The door was there, I could see it but every time I reached for it, there was just flat stone. I felt around and expected there to be some kind of trick but there wasn’t.
Oliver works at a butcher shop and had conflicted feelings (romantic and platonic) about his co-worker. He’s an oversharer and doesn’t connect well with other people.
Oliver is gay.
I’m sorry about this. I didn’t expect my engines to fail. Or for you to carry that many crates. And like I said, you’ll get first pick when we arrive.
My chest burned as he split open my skin like I was just a slab of meat being portioned out for distribution. I heard my skin tearing and blood was spilling from my chest. It’s so weird because all I could think about was how warm my blood was. I was paralyzed with the pain and the absolute terror that I was going to die during sex.
No. You helped me. No one’s ever done that for me before. I mean, Elena did also but you didn’t immediately throw me off the boat. And you listened to me... so... I’m grateful. It means more to me than you think.
I eventually paddled my way to shore where I came across a collapsed shelter. I feel like I should’ve cried with relief but I didn’t. I felt numb and angry and hoped that because I had lived, they had died. I didn’t stay numb or angry for very long because my stomach started grumbling.
Gurgle is a Depth Creature with an unnatural attachment to a rotary phone they found in an underwater ruin. They reach out to Anak for help finding a new home.
Gurgle does speak in mostly gurgling sounds (hence the name) and does not have many coherent speaking lines.

I started to panic because if anyone discovered the murder, they’d pin it on me and take my friend away. I did the only thing I could think of. I know it wasn’t the smartest move but I grabbed my friend and I swam away.
Conner is an exhausted single dad to his 9-year-old daughter, Annie. He loves her but also fears the creature that she might be. He is doing the best he can as a father.
Conner is FTM and gave birth to Annie.
Ah, I- (sighs) We’re gonna be stuck here for a bit sweetie. I thought The Moonstone would last longer but we’re going to need new spark plugs.
The storm was so loud that I couldn’t even hear myself screaming and I knew it was because my throat hurt so badly, I thought I was spitting blood. The scary part about that wasn’t the idea that I was going to die but knowing that I was alone. I didn’t even get to die with Jolie.

We always had a sense of pride in what we did and watching our patients' faces as they received their limbs, or other mobility aids - it always had the same effect. When I say I have a good memory for patients, it’s the moment when they smile that I remember the most...
Excuse me, is my story too boring for you? If you’re not going to participate, what’s the point in keeping you alive?
Instead, I let something take over me. My own desire to be accepted, to be with people who were like me... something… something I can’t even describe. I could hear the way that everybody had let go of their own sense of morality and were just free. They were enjoying themselves in this moment while they could.
Both his name and job description, Corpse Finder takes pride in his work and his special ability to find the dead. He treats everyone with respect and has a lot of empathy for grieving people. Due to this, Corpse Finder is widely sought out for his abilities.
Corpse Finder is a minor recurring character.
Thank you. I appreciate it, but she’ll be fine out here. As much as I don’t like it, I have to admit that putting a corpse on someone’s couch isn’t the best idea. Trust me on that.
I remember how I felt watching them… guilty. Like I was the one who put her in the water. But I remember feeling my father’s hand on my shoulder and when I looked up at him, I asked if I’d made a mistake. My father isn’t very good with words but I remember what he said to me because it changed my life.
I am young! 73 years young! Here, here, feel these muscles. I might only have one arm but whoo-wee my other one! And my legs? I’ve got the strength of a 20-year-old!
I think we both felt it because we launched at each other. Fist against claw! And we brawled. I think neither of us wanted it to end because when one of us was startin’ to get the upper hand, we’d let the other get in a few good hits.
Kuhfu is a taxi driver based out of the Tempe Port. He’s friendly, cautious, and practical. His conversations with Anak are all casual and they regard each other with professional respect.
Khufu is a minor recurring character.

Not everything in this world is sad. So what if the Old Gods abandoned us? Lady Oceana is proof that it’s okay. She proved that true love is possible and the world is better for it. I can tell, you’ve never been in love before. I think you’re just jaded.
It’s nothing bad, really. My um... nakedness. No one stole my clothes or anything like that. This is voluntary. I was trying to find them again.
Anyway, I knocked and… The person who answered the door was naked. Like… fully naked. Uh, well they asked if they could help me and I did my best to be respectful and maintain eye contact while I explained my situation. I also tried to leave because I didn’t want to interrupt their… their… activities.
Please! We have to get out of here! I need- they’re coming after me! Please, please! Drive, please!
Every day, I knelt in the ruins of my old house and I would pray to the old gods to come back and wipe out the Depth Creatures who murdered my family… People would just ignore me because I was just another tragedy. Too common. But... For the first time in a long time I felt like I was surrounded with people who understood me… and were willing to accept me no matter what.
The Cult Leader is an unknown teenager around the age of 15-16. She’s a powerful speaker and commands one of the most dangerous and elusive cults in Arizona. She knows how to get her followers excited and keep them loyal.
The Cult Leader is a recurring character and will appear in future seasons.
They finally arrived in a town, this town, where she was welcomed and accepted. And she felt like she was home. These people were her family, and they all knew where they belonged. The Little Girl pledged her life to her new family and to the stars. And everything was all right.
What can we learn from this? It’s never to trust the outsiders who claim they just want what’s best for us. How can they know that? Are we not the masters of ourselves? But it begs the question of who does?
