Komi Can't Communicate: Manga Fan-Dub
Project Overview
Komi Can't Communicate is a popular manga that's recently been animated, but the anime doesn't have a dub, so we thought it'd be a fun fan project to create a fan-dub of the original comic! We'll need voice actors to get this going, so here are auditions! Every character has got quirks and fun personalities that will make them a blast to voice, so have at it! Keep in mind though, it's probably better if you have at least some knowledge of the series beforehand. It's fine if you don't but let me know in the description of your audition if you do.
Please have a half-decent microphone with no background noise at the very least, and also this project may be a very long-term one, so I guess don't audition if you're going to dip out immediately lol.

Komi quite literally cannot communicate. She has a hard time talking to people and making friends, but that doesn't mean she doesn't want to. She does her best to try and overcome her communication disorder even if it's near impossible with how shy she is. Her voice is extremely softspoken, and her voice lines will just be simple gasps, whimpers, or "Hmph!"s 90% of the time. But when she does speak, she usually stutters indefinitely, and even if she does get it out, she says it quietly in the softest tone imaginable, and it takes an immeasurable amount of effort just to do that.
It's much easier to do if you've seen the anime as a reference, but all are welcome to give it a shot.
(Talking to herself. Incredibly quiet, basically whispering. This is the first time we hear her speak at all.)
"Why do I... don't want... talk in front of people..."
(Trying to say "How did you know I wasn't good at talking to people?" but failing due to her communication disorder and immense nervousness. Played as comedy as she trembles in fear trying to speak.)
"Ho... ho... ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho-"
(These are just little sound effects she usually does. You can make them sound however you feel fits!)
"Hmm?" (concerned)
"Hmph!!" (determined)
"!!" (very surprised, basically a squeek.)
Najimi is a ball of hyperactive energy, and is an extremely social person; a stark contrast to Komi! They claim to be childhood friends with everyone in the entire school, so they rock at chatting it up and making plans whenever a situation calls for it! The only issue is that they aren't always the most level-headed, and their only goal in life seems to be having as much fun as possible, even if it's in some most mischievous ways! She's pathologically dishonest and just wants to mess with people and get a laugh most of the time. Even their gender is unknown!
They're a lot of fun to voice! I suppose my only request is to give her a more androgenous voice that could work as both male or female. Have fun!
(Playful and casual despite the other person's complete embarrassment over the story. They're just messing around.)
"Quit calling me Osana. We're friends right? Call me Najimi like you used to! Like that time when we told that one girl you liked her by writing it on the school track! You TOTALLY got rejected."
(Sheepishly admitting her nervousness of becoming friends with Komi)
"Sorry but... I don't like her. And umm... She was the only person I couldn't be friends with. She ignored everything I said. The shock put me in bed for a week!"
(In shock of the situation and bursting out into laughter)
"(laughing) You're HILARIOUS, Komi! I had the wrong idea about you! I thought you were a vampire or something!"
While sweet and cheerful on the surface, Yamai is a total psychopath whose only goal in the world is to have Komi all to herself. She's madly in love with her and resorts to extreme methods to get what she wants. She takes the role of the leader of the "cool girls" in class, and is overall pretty bratty and snide. She'll play innocent, but believe me, her heart is a dark abyss of pure lust.
She's basically a character from mean girls so do with that what you will. (Warning: I have literally never seen mean girls lol.)
(While she acts smiley and cheerful, in reality, she only cares about re-establishing her superiority to all around her. The last line should be less smiley and more obviously blunt and aggressive.)
"So, What do you need? Oh, nothing? Really? Then stop talking to me."
(Aggressively ranting at a nervous Tadano, who simply wanted to ask her to be friends with Komi.)
"Huh?! How dare you speak such a hallowed name?! Refer to her as 'Her Highness,' loser! Don't get presumptuous just because you sit next to her scumbag! You're less than horse poop, so you should be thankful you breathe the same air as her you arrogant scumbag! Scumbag, scumbag, scumbag, scumbag, scumba-"
(Making fun of a nervous girl who's struggling to speak without stuttering. Playful but derogatory.)
"(laughing) Be aggressive! B. E. Aggressive!"
Agari is extremely nervous and jittery. While she tries to keep to herself and her books, but her clumsy nature ends up landing her in all sorts of trouble. She's just overall pretty socially awkward and jumpy, so her voice should be similar. Oh yeah, and she's also apparently a masochist who wants to be treated as nothing but a dog? Pretty weird.
The stuttering nervous glasses girl archetype cranked up to 100% should work here.
(Very nervous and jittery)
"M-m-my name is Agari! It's n-n-n... nice to meet y-y-you!"
(Listing her shortcomings to herself, felling pretty down.)
"I'm nervous, and I'm not cute, and I'm a little chubby, short-legged and near-sighted. I'm awful at introducing myself, and I tremble everywhere I go, and I never raise my hand. I'm pathetic."
(Jumpy and frightened.)
"W-why is Komi staring at me? It's s-scary! Have I done something wrong?!"
The entire school is a bit of a character in and of itself. Komi's class is obsessed with her beauty and is amazed by literally anything she does. Their excitement should reflect this. I'll probably get a bunch of people from this role to join since the crowd in the background is a pretty important asset to the setting.
(The crowd is rushing to Komi's table to marvel at her beauty. Literally just scream her name.)
"Komi!!!"
(Pestering Komi with questions.)
"Komi! Are you on Instagram? I love you! Where do you live?"
(Glaring at Tadano, jealous that he sits next to Komi. Played as humor as Tadano nervously observes the glares.)
"If he dies, I'll get his seat. Your name's Tadano right? Mweheheh..."
They're the teacher. Nothing special, just a boring old teacher.
(Instructing the class.)
"Time to introduce yourselves."
(Trying to get the attention of a student lost in thought.)
"Next. Neeeeext."
(Giving orders.)
"On your feet! Bow. Next, assemble in the gym."
The narrator is an important part of the comic, as they provide the setting, backstories, and much of the humor to the story. Many different interpretations can work, whether it's deadpan, sincere, lighthearted and humorous, etc. They're the main force of the series! Just have fun!
(A sincere opening to the series providing context to Komi's personality)
"The term 'Communication Disorder' describes a group of symptoms that cause people to experience difficulty interacting with others. Those suffering from this disorder may appear unfriendly. But the truth is... while they may seem standoffish, they still actually *want* to have relationships."
(Insight on just how impressive Komi's beauty is and how she's already made a name for herself.)
"Komi was already the class princess on the very first day of school"
(The class hates Tadano already, and this narration reinforces it. It can be humor, or just stated as a matter of fact. Up to You.)
"Tadano realized his high school life had already ended."
