"Kaze to ki no uta", known also as "The Poem of Wind and Trees", is a shojo manga by Keiko Takmiya. It was first published from 1976 to 1984 in Japan and never actually came out in any other country, which means it never came out in English (if you're interested in it you can still find the scans of the manga translated by fans). The series is widely regarded as a shōnen-ai manga classic, being one of the first in the genre to combine romantic and sexual relationships. It took nine years for Takemiya's publishers to agree to publish it, as Takemiya refused to censor the sexual elements of the story. 

The manga's first three volumes were adapted into an hour OVA in 1987, which, as the manga, was never translated in English And that's what this project is all about: the dubbing of this hidden gem. 

PLOT: 

Serge is the son of a French viscount and a Roma woman, attending the Lacombrade Academy near Arles at the request of his late father. Upon arrival at the school, he finds himself roomed with Gilbert, who is reviled by the school's pupils and professors for skipping classes and engaging in relations with older male students. Serge's efforts to befriend his roommate - and Gilbert's efforts to drive off and seduce the young aristocrat, in response - soon form a complicated and disruptive connection between the two.

Despite his apparent cruelty and promiscuity, however, Gilbert proves to be a tortured young man with a history of abandonment, objectification, and abuse...

WARNING: Before you audition, I have to tell you that this story talks about some really really rough themes, including racism, sexual discovery, classism, abuse, incest, obsession... So please, make sure you're confortable with those kind of things and able to act out even sexual scenes (even if they're not really explicit or obscene it still might be a problem for some people, so be sure you can make it).


RULES: 

1) If you audition, please consider you might be chosen and that in that case you'll have to be fully committed to this project. So please, don't abandon it if there's not a real, serious reason.

2) Anyone can audition: the main characters being so young, even females may dub them (I'll add more details later) and some extras are needed, so if you audition for a main role and don't get it, don't worry! You can be chosen as an extra.

3) Show emotions: this is an emotionally challenging story and I want to depict it as trully and emotionally as I can, so please, convey all the emotions you can in your auditions. I won't choose people that sound to me like robots.

4) You must have Discord: we'll communicate through it. If you want to talk to me privately, you are free to contact me on my mail.

5) I don't pretend perfect microphones, but I'd prefer ones with little to no noise and no unexpected clicks.

6) If you're chosen, you'll have to give me some online name to credit, since I (of course) want to recognize each one's job.

7) I'll send you lines in a series of parts, as I progress with the translation (right now I haven't started it yet -in fact the lines I'm giving you are from the English subtitles-, but the base for my work will be the englsh subtitles and the italian dubbing on my personal DVD), but the whole video will be published as a single one. I think splitting it into parts might be easier for you.

8) Prepare to lyp-synch, since this is the dubbing of an animated movie. You don't have to do it for the auditions, of course, just tell the lines as they come to you, but know that you'll have to do it. If you have any questions about it, please feel free to tell me!

9) Just a note, not quite a rule, but you should use the french pronunciati of the name 'Gilbert' (ʒil.bɛʁ)

  • Extras!

    While the research for the perfect Serge and Gilbert goes on, I've decided that I should tell you which of the actors that auditioned won't get one of the main parts. This is not to make you feel inferior or anything, I just want to tell you that, even if you haven't been chosen, you still be a part of this project, playing as an extra. There are a lot of students talking in the background in this project, professors etc etc, and I'd be very happy to have other to play those roles excluding the voice actors I already have. So, since I'm unable to send private messages (Thanks, Hermione -who'll get this will have a super privileged part, I promise XD-) I'm writing the names of the ones that I've considered as extra! If you see your name on here, please contact me privately! Possible extras are: Ancy NickUniverse Kuma-chan UgGoKram doctorserious Please don't get offended if you weren't chosen, as I've already said as a director I simply have to choose which is the best voice for which character.   • Small update

    I'm sorry to tell you that I'm unable to communicate with the short-listed actors, so I just hope they'll somehow see the message... Also, I decided that I'll add to Gilbert's short list KysaraGii as well, I'm interested in hearing her voice once more and see if she fits on him. Hope to hear from all of you soon!

  • Serge and Gilbert final choice

    As I have already mentioned, I'm utterly uncertain about what to do about the main characters. Being one of my OTPs, I want them to be absolutely perfect, and I've had some problems both deciding what kind of voice I wanted Serge to have and so deciding who might fit him, and then choosing between a lot of talented girls that auditioned for Gilbert and that put all their own spin to the character. At the end of the day, I found myself not entirely satisfied with the voices I received for Serge and full of doubts about Gilbert. So I decided to do a bit of a different thing to decide who to cast: I've selected the voice actors that stuck me the most for both roles, and I will ask those voice actors to do for me a whole scene as their character. I'll provide them with script and with the original clip to understand the context and to decide how to interpret their lines. Before telling you who those voice actors are, I want to thank everyone that auditioned for my sweet babies, and want to tell you that even if you weren't chosen you'll be contacted anyway to ask you if you want to be a part of this project as an extra. Also, if by the end of this experiment I haven't chosen the voice actors, I'll most likely re-open auditions and yours might be considered once more. So don't loose your hope! I'm very grateful for all those that auditioned, I really am and want to thank you all! And now...   • Tomorrow's deadline

    As you already know, the deadline is set for tomorrow, which means that most of the cast will be chosen from tomorrow on. This means that I'll temporarily close the roles to decide who gets which part. Being there a couple of roles that I want to keep open, the project will remain open for a while, but since I want to get work started and I want to choose the other roles, I'll momentarily cose the roles, so don't worry if you see that the role you auditioned for has been cast to an offsite actor. I'll send everyone who got a part a message as soon as I decide to tell them if and which part they got and to redirect them to my Discord page for this project. I'll also text those who auditioned but didn't get the part to ask them if they want to still be involved in the project by voicing extras. As for the script, I'm still stuck at part 1 (lazy me XD) but I'll hopefully get back to work soon. See ya all tomorrow!

  • 3 days to the deadline

    So, it's three days to the new deadline! And I still have no idea who to cast as Pascal and Carl XD So, here's the fact: the first part of the script (which is roughly 11 minutes, which means there are 48 minutes more to do XD) has been sent to the script revisioner that hopefully will give send it back to me soon. I'll start writing on the second one soon. I thought that until the script is corrected I may cast the rest of the characters and then open a sort of second round of auditions for Carl and Pascal. So I might need your help to advertise this project! Also, as I've already said, I might ask some of the ones that auditioned for Serge and Gilbert for some other lines! As soon as the 6th August arrives I'll publish a list of the voice actors I'm considering for the roles

Serge is 15. He's the son of Count Aslan and Paiva, a former prostitute. Her mother being a Roma woman, he has a dark complection and is often discriminated because of that. He has a sweet heart, is generous and kind, and maybe a little too much innocent. He starts out with good intentions to help Gilbert, but as time progresses he feels both attracted and rejected by the boy. His feelings for him are constantly shifting, and he both feels pity for him, trying to help him make friends and thinking he could "save him", and contempt because of his sexual beheaviour. But he never acts meanly against him or, if he does, he instantly feels sorry for that. He has a passion for music and trully feels free when he's playing the piano.

I'd like Serge to have a medium voice. It has to be tender and sweet but at the same time, when needed, authoritarian (don't forget he has noble origins, and he knows it!). He's also really cheerful with his friends so he has to feel happy but also a sort of meditative, "artistic" soul at the same time. I accept both male and females for this role but I'd prefer having someone with a deeper voice than Gilbert for his role. Also, it may be required to the one who is chosen to do some longer speeches, since the story is told from Serge's point of view and we hear his inner thoghts.

Gilbert is 15. He's Serge's roomate. He's incredibly beautiful and attractive, and this causes the attentions of almost everyone in the Academy. He's a "damned" figure, tragically beautiful and aware of the power he can gain on others thorugh sex. He's fascinating, seductive and used to getting what he wants. But at the same time, he's unable to trully love anyone (except his uncle, Auguste) and having an healthy relationship with anyone, having always been neglected and treated merely as a sexual object, not as a human being. This is the base of all his quarrels with Serge and at the same time the origin of his attraction with the boy, so different from anyone he knows. He can be extremely seductive and bossy, but at the same time he's incredibly fragile and is easily broken by rejection. Anyone who auditions for this role should be inspired, I think, from figures like Rimbaud and know that the author of the manga was inspired, for this character, by Tadzio, the little boy from "Death in Venice". Keep in mind that this character also has some of the few "sexual" scenes of the OAV, so you should be prepared to go with it.

I'd like a feminine tone, so I think a female may be more apt for this role, but I'm accepting males as well. Please remember you have to be seductive and attractive, but in the last line try to be as sad and fragile as you can be. Also, he has a very loud, cheeerful laughter, so please include a recording of a laughter you think would suit him.

  • I do enjoy it. I enjoy kissing and being held. Being held means more than just a hug. You understand, right? Caressing... Kissing... Filling my body up with lust. And then... *whispers* And then...

Pascal is a friend of Serge. He is very interested in science and one of the few ones in the Academy not interested in Gilbert. He provides the comidic lines of the story. He is a cheerful boy, a sociable book-worm and at the same time he clearly differentiates from the others because of his knowledge and his smirky replies. I'd like him to have a deeper voice than Serge and Gilbert, since he's also older and more mature. He should have a classic "intelligent" voice, and should have a good funny delivery. Also, those who audition for this role should be prepared to do a line in latin at the beginning.

  • I study some practical science courses on my own. If all we study are the classics, we'll never advance!

Carl is a friend of Serge. He's a very kind, gentle and pious boy and he is the one who puts Serge in Gilbert room, hoping to help him out. Being so mature, I'd like him to have a deeper voice than Serge. He is usually really calm and always tries to figure things out.

Student superintendent general in the school. As Gilbert, he has feminine traits, and because of this I'd like him to have a female vocie. He always tries to be respected but at the same time he's scared by Auguste. As Gilbert, he's also really fascinating and has a strong impact on anyone who sees him.

He's Glibert's uncle. He has a strong, even sexual relationship since he was really young. He has decided to "make him" according to his wishes and has forged him to be always in need of sexual contact, unable to live with anything else and condamning him to an unhappy life. Though he appears briefly in the OAV, he is a vicious man, able to charm and at the same time terrify, commanding and sneaky in everything he does, trying to get what he want.

  • I am the one who raised him to be that way. Searing pleasure and pain... Anything less is not intense enough.

  • The more he suffers, the more he'll develop artistically. He'll lose his indecency and become nude. His sensitivity will be pure.
