Jeff Smith's Bone - The Complete Comic Dub (at least we're hoping to)
Project Overview
Greetings fellow voice actors and actresses, and fans of good comics. I'm here to announce another project, but one that's had quite a history...
So for years, my friend EarthGwee and I have been trying to make a full comic dub based on Jeff Smith's award winning graphic novel series, Bone. However, between real life holding it back and various other elements, we haven't been able to get it off the ground. But now with the recent news of Netflix working on an animated series based on the books, it inspired us to try again at putting the dub together.
Here is a synopsis of the series:
The series centers on the Bone cousins, an avaricious and greedy Phoncible P. "Phoney" Bone, a goofy cigar-smoking Smiley Bone, and an everyman character Fone Bone, who have been run out of their hometown of Boneville after Phoney's campaign for mayor went awry. After crossing a desert, the cousins are separated by a sea of locusts and individually ending up in the mysterious Valley and must make their way across the fantasy landscape while being pursued by rat. They joyously reunite at a local tavern called Barrelhaven, where they are taken in by a mysterious girl named Thorn and her even more enigmatic grandmother. As they stay longer in the Valley, they encounter humans and other creatures who are threatened by a dark entity, the Lord of the Locusts. The Bones, trying to escape to Boneville, are quickly drawn into the events around them, compelling them on a hero's journey to help free the Valley.
We already have a few actors onboard, and we plan on tag-teaming on the actual video making (I'd do the audio mixing and she'd do the video editing). But for a series as long as Bone, we're gonna need a lot of help to put this together. Hence why we put together this casting call.
--AUDITION GUIDELINES--
* If you're going to audition for this project, you must be committed to it. We plan on dubbing the entire series, which will likely take a while. So you better be willing to stay for the long haul.
* While not outright necessary, it'd be very beneficial if you had some familiarity with the comics. You can read them here: https://readcomiconline.to/Comic/Bone-1991
* Make sure your recordings are clear (no background noise or mic puffs) and that you really emote for the lines. We aren't going to accept poor quality recordings for this dub.
* More characters will be added overtime. So if you wanted to try out but don't see a character you think you'd be good at, just wait around.
With that said, we both can't wait to hear what you all have to contribute to this dream project. Thank you for reading this, and good luck~

One of the main protagonists of Bone and one of the Bone Cousins. Fone is the straight man of the trio, trying to keep his selfish cousin Phoney in check. After a grandiose scheme that ends with the Bones getting run out of town, Fone loses his cousins after being ambushed by a swarm of locusts. He ends up in a strange Valley where he tries to find and reunite with them. While he's there, he befriends a young woman named Thorn with whom he instantly develops a crush for.
Fone is a friendly and compassionate person, but not without his limits; particularly when they involve Phoney's hair-brained schemes. He's also very passionate about his favorite book of all time, Moby Dick. However, people tend to fall asleep when he drones on about it (much to his annoyance).
Voice Type: Medium to Mid-High, Youthful
(is grumbling about his cousin Phoney) Hmmf. I'm always getting him out of trouble. Well cousin or not, when we get back to Boneville, Phoney's going to have to face the music by himself. I've had it! From now on, he can outrun angry mobs and fall off cliffs by himself.
I've got to go find Thorn. (then acts infatuated) I promised I'd help her churn butter today...
(stopping after being chased) Those Rat Creature would have to be pretty stupid to follow me onto this frail, little branch... (then right after said Rat Creatures prove him wrong and jump onto said branch) STUPID, STUPID RAT CREATURES!
As his name implies, he is a giant red dragon that seems to have followed Fone Bone into the Valley. At first, only Fone Bone is aware of his existence. But eventually he makes his presence known to Thorn and her grandmother, the latter he seems to have some kind of history with. For a majority of the story, he'll sometimes pop up to help Fone Bone; but his true purpose for being in the Valley is tied to a much bigger secret.
Voice Type: Low
(calm yet still imposing) Seems to me you boys have a short memory. Beat it.
Funny you should mention that. How many warriors do you have between here and the waterfall? A thousand? Two thousand? I believe this violates our agreement.
That's right, kid. Never play an ace if a two will do.
Gran'ma Ben is Thorn's grandmother who lives with her in the Valley. Despite her sweet looking demeanor, she's actually a very tenacious old woman. Gran'ma Ben also partakes in the annual Cow Races, where she actually races all the other cows in the village on foot.
Unbeknownst to everyone, even Thorn herself, Gran'ma Ben hides a deep secret. One that affects her granddaughter, the Valley, and even the world...
Voice Type: Medium, Elderly, Southern Accent
(still keeping a sweet demeanor) Ted, dear? I think you better leave. I'm gonna tear this little fella apart from the inside out.
(feeling woozy and uneasy) It's th' gitchy feelin'. It just comes out of the blue ... It's a terrible feelin' that makes your head swim, an' your legs wobble. It's a powerful omen of bad things to come...
(suspicious) Hmm. I don't like it. An' there's a bad moon out tonight, too. Run back to th' barn an' get your blanket. I think you better come in th' house with us tonight...
Lucius is the owner of the Valley's local tavern, the Barrel Haven. He's also an old friend of Thorn and especially Gran'ma Ben. His first encounter with the Bones though wasn't too ideal, given how he met Phoney first and was quite off put by his usual unlikable demeanor.
Like with Gran'ma Ben, Lucius is tied to a big secret that'll likely affect the Valley and possibly the world.
Voice Type: Mid-Low to Low, Gruff, Southern Accent
(furious to see Phoney) Oh no! Not another one!! You better be able to pay for those drinks, shorty! That's two mugs of my best ale. You owe me two eggs an' I want him now!
(friendly towards Gran'ma Ben) How ya doin', Rosie? Was th' road safe? I was worried about ya. Oh! I got somethin' for ya. Here. I been savin' it in my pocket all day. (hands her a flower)
But those boys owe me a lotta' eggs, Rosie ... (gives in) Oh, all right. Call him out. But then get back to work!
The main antagonist of the series; The Hooded One is a mysterious figure who is hoping to resurrect their master, the Lord of the Locusts. They believe that the way to do so is to sacrifice a being of unfathomable power, a small bald creature with a star on their chest. They're also tied to the greater mystery that surrounds the Valley.
Voice Type: Medium to Mid-High. Androgynous, Ancient and Withered
...I have received word that the one we seek has been seen in your territory ... how is it that you have not brought him to me?...
...I have wasted enough time as it is ... I have even jeopardized my own plans ... but ... we have unfinished business, you and I...
(commanding) Go now ... we attack tonight!...
The king of the Rat Creatures, Kingdok is a reoccurring antagonist who works alongside the Hooded One. As the story goes forward, he gets a lot more mutilated and slowly becomes a more mindless monster.
Voice Type: Low, Monstrous Yet Commanding
Get up, you two. (pause) Get up before I crush your heads.
(reprimanding) Quiet! I've had scouts out looking for you two! You two are starting to make me look bad!
He has received word that the one we seek--the small, bald creature with the star on his chest--has been seen in the valley. He was last seen in your territory...
A giant mountain lion introduced in Book 5 of the series; the self proclaimed "master of the Eastern Border", Roque Ja views himself as neutral in the conflict between the humans and the Lord of the Locusts. His personal views are that there is no such thing as "good" and "evil", only that power matters above all and that friendship and love are meaningless. He despises both Dragons and Rat Creatures but works for the Hooded One in exchange for land and spoils of war. His name is mispronounced as 'Rock Jaw' by the Bone cousins
Voice Type: Mid-Low to Low, Somewhat regal, but can also be quite beastly
I am Roque Ja, master of the Eastern Border. Everything you see in these mountains belongs to me. Anything that moves in my domain, does so only with my leave ... (with a slight hint of disgust) and that includes Rat Creatures!
(formal, but with a hint of sarcasm) Ah, Kingdok, how good of you to come. You're looking better than the last time I saw you. (pause) What was that? I couldn't quite make that out. What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?
(matter of factly) R-R-Roque Ja. R-R-Roque. You're not rolling the "r".
Ted is a small leaf bug that befriends Fone Bone shortly after he appears in the Valley. Seeing as how insects are quite knowledgeable about the world, he appears now and then throughout the story to check up on the Bones, and relay information about the ongoing plot to people who are outside of the loop.
Voice Type: High-Pitch, Southern Accent
Hey! Watch it! You almost stepped on me!
(somewhat reluctant) I guess I could take ya to see Thorn's gran'ma. But I gots ta warn ya ... she's a ol' lady, an' she might not take yer attitude much...
(eager and happy) Ooh! A town meeting! Does we gits ta vote? I jes love ta vote!
A small, often outspoken villager who works for Lucius at the Barrelhaven, and views Lucius as a hero. He plays a slightly larger role as the story unfolds.
Voice Type: Medium to Mid-High, Southern Accent, Friendly
(friendly greeting) Good day, Gran'ma Ben! Lucius had us block th' road. There was some strange doin's in th' woods last night. Th' Hairy Men are out.
(nervous) Um ... one night when I was walkin' home ... uh ... I saw something ... there wasn't hardly any moon out, so it was kinda dark, an' real quiet. Then I saw it, a huge shape movin' between th' trees! It was big an' it was orange -- and when it was gone, all that was left was th' smell of brimstone...
One of Lucius' tough "bar-room boys" and the tinsmith of Barrelhaven. Outspoken in the early issues (he and Euclid have more than once threatened to trounce Phoney Bone), he became more introverted once the reality of the bigger threat of the story presents itself. He often changes sides and his mind.
Voice Type: Medium to Mid-High, Southern Accent
(blunt) We ain't tryin' to hurt her feelin's. But you heard th' rumors. Gran'ma Ben's all washed up. We know you're sweet on her, Lucius, but nobody's gonna bet on her when th' odds are a hundred to one against her.
(aggressive) Everything was fine until th' Bones came came to our part of the Valley. Now all we got is trouble!
(frightened) He's tellin' th' truth, Lucius! We got us a real, live dragon walkin' around here!
One of Lucius' tough "bar-room boys", Euclid often wishes to resort to physical force to solve problems.
Voice Type: Mid-Low, Southern Accent
(inquisitive) 4 to 1? To beat Gran'ma Ben? Say ... that's hard to believe. Who owns this 'Mystery Cow' anyway?
(aggressively) I say we tear their legs off! Rip off their heads!
They're [the Rat Creatures] sure gettin' a lot braver. You never use to see them around. An' now you hear stories about 'em every day.
