Dib is separated from the rest of his peers by his exceptional intelligence and determination. Also, Dib continues to seek out the paranormal despite the considerable ridicule he receives from both peers and family.
He considers himself to be the sole defender of Earth against Zim's plans of conquest, and rightly so; he's in fact the only one who knows (or cares) that Zim is an Irken bent on world domination and the subjugation of all humanity.
When Zim first landed on Earth, Dib was initially shown to be more antagonistic, obsessed, and desperate, making it his sole goal in life to expose Zim as an alien by any means necessary.

Purple, as stated above, is the more comical of the two current Tallest. He was shown to be less capable than Red in "Backseat Drivers from Beyond the Stars", choosing to hover around and grab as much donuts as possibly as well as freaking out instead of taking control of the situation. Both are very lazy and petty, however, and enjoy snacking and generally ruling all of Irk.
Purple is also shown to be generally less patient than Red. He's more likely to criticize things he doesn't like: the Megadoomer and the name for the Resisty, to name a few. He is occasionally antagonized by Red, but seems to be more or less tolerant of the bullying, often simply laughing.

Professor Membrane has been presented an incredibly vain individual judging by how he owns multiple objects and inventions that resemble him (mainly being his scythe-shaped hairstyle). Despite this, he still cares about other people, that being his family. Although he does seem to have little parental concern for his children. As shown in the unmade episode "Mopiness of Doom", Dib comes home after a fight with Zim, now having disheveled hair, scratches, and torn-up clothing. Membrane either didn't notice Dib's condition, or seem very concerned about it. Another instance is in "Battle-Dib", where he didn't even seem to recognize his son in the battle armor he was wearing.

At her current, in-universe age, Gaz is best known for her short-tempered, creepy, dark, gothic, misanthropic, tough, tomboyish, cynical, and antisocial nature, along with her obsessions over pizza and video games. If a person interferes with her, or with what she enjoys doing, she will often vow revenge, meaning Gaz has a tendency to seek revenge on those who cross her... and she usually gets away with it. Although whether or not she follows up on her vow depends on the situation.

Red is implied to be the more serious and capable half of the Tallest, though he is still shown to be inept and unfocused. In "Backseat Drivers From Beyond the Stars", he tried to take control of the problem, whereas Purple opted to panic.
He is also more independent than his co-Tallest, as he is seen more often than not making crucial decisions for the Irken Empire, like choosing to change Invader Larb's mission from Blorch to Vort, deciding to turn the Slaughtering Rat People's homeworld into a Parking Structure Planet, deciding to send Invader Tenn the Megadoomer X-3 Combat Stealth Mech, and sent Zim far away to Earth, among other things.

GIR is happy-go-lucky, enthusiastic, energetic, excitable, and extremely hyperactive, and will eat just about anything, regardless of whether it is edible or not. Most of the time he spouts nonsense, but does have a few, short moments of clarity: for instance, in "Walk for Your Lives" he actually contemplated whether making the explosion go faster would make things worse ("But if the big 'splody goes fast, won't it get all bad?"), and in "Bad, Bad Rubber Piggy" he questioned the wisdom of sending a machine into the past to destroy Dib.
